ALPHA ONLINE!Starts the week of Monday, September 14, 2020. All sessions will be online. This fall we have two different time slots to choose from; Tuesdays at 6:30 pm or Thursdays at 8:30 pm.

The Thursday time slot was specifically selected to try to give young parents an option to attend Alpha! Put the kids to bed and then join us online! However, anyone is welcome to join, even if you don’t have young kids (or kids at all!)

Alpha is free. Register at www.ourladygc.org/alpha-register.

HOLY FATHER’S PRAYER INTENTIONSRespect for the Planet’s Resources

We pray that the planet’s resources will not be plundered, but shared in a just and respectful manner.

MONSIGNOR CODY’S AND FR. JIM’S PRAYER INTENTIONLet us pray that as church, we may proclaim a greater respect for life from conception to natural death: for protection for the unborn; for access to basic needs for the poor; for liberty for captives; health-care for the sick; labor for the unemployed; refuge for refugees; justice for the accused.

We pray to the Lord.

PRAYER INTENTIONS FOR

SEPTEMBER 2020ST. VINCENT DE PAUL FRIENDS OF THE POOR WALKThe annual Friends of the Poor (FOP) Walk/Run will be held on Saturday, September 26. Normally it is a diocesan fundraising event conducted at a central location. Due to the pandemic, this year the walk will be virtual and done locally.

Our conference will be meeting at the flagpole in front of school at 9 am. Please wear a mask and observe social distancing. The walk will proceed around the school building as many times as the participants deem necessary. Come on out and join us. This a great way to support our parish SVDP conference and to get a little exercise. Plus, the money we raise helps our local neighbors in need. For more information, please contact Neil Doppes by email at [email protected] or by phone at 614.214.8482.

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

“And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my Church, and the gates of Hades shall not prevail against it.” (Mt 16:18)

In a recent homily, Deacon Kopczewski compared evil to a medieval city surrounded by high walls and massive gates. Jesus was not telling Peter the church was huddling inside a castle and merely defending against evil. No, it was evil that was on the defensive; beset on all sides by Christians. And it was those gates of the city of evil that would not stand against the Church that Christ Himself founded. (Yes, Deacon, we do occasionally listen to your homilies.)

On his radio program The Reason for Our Hope, Fr. Larry Richards remembers talking to one of “his kids,” a student at the high school he was responsible for in Pittsburgh. The student was lamenting how Christians were meek and humble, passive, weak; how it was so easy to be a Christian.

Fr. Richards, in his typical bluntness, told the student he was an idiot and then recounted how Christ had not only fasted in the desert for forty days, but had then resisted the devil’s temptations afterwards (Mt. 4:1 – 11), had driven the moneychangers from the temple (Mk. 11:15 – 19), and willingly took up the most bitter of cups in the Garden of Gethsemane (Lk. 22:42). Rather than being easy, meek, humble, passive, and weak, Fr. Richards recounts telling that student, “Being a Christian is the hardest thing you will ever try to do.”

I fear too many of us are huddling inside our private castles thinking we are similarly weak and helpless against society. There is rampant secularization, COVID-19, cancellation culture, politics, and so many other forces arrayed against us. I would argue that God

did not create us in His image and likeness to hide our faith under a basket and cower at home. He made us to storm that city of evil and breach its gates, to do that hardest thing we will every try to do, to be that light in a world seemingly filled with darkness.

In the iconic film The Princess Bride all seems lost. The hero is “mostly dead,” the heroine is about to be married and murdered, and the machinations of the nefarious plot seem are all but assured to succeed. As the three protagonists head off, battered, bleeding, and broken, a side character Max the Wizard cheerfully tells them, “Have fun storming the castle.” His wife then asks Max, “Think it’ll work?” to which he replies, “It’ll take a miracle.”

Fortunately, God is very much in the business of miracles.

If we are ready to take that hard path, to let our light shine in that darkness, to storm that castle, what do we do next? I would suggest reclaiming the Sabbath.

If you are safely able to attend Mass, do so. If health concerns prevent you from doing so, dress up the family in your Sunday best, watch the live streamed mass, and then discuss it. Spend the rest of the day avoiding work, but with your thoughts on God. If God has called on you to work, turn your thoughts to Him as you do so.

Sunday has become such… another day of the week; let’s reclaim it for our own again. Let reclaiming the Sabbath be the first catapult stone and blow of the ram against the gates of evil.

“So God blessed the seventh day and hallowed it.” (Gen. 2:3)

A MESSAGE FROM POPE FRANCIS PART IV:September 27, 2020 will be the 106th World Day of Migrants and Refugees. In addition to the four verbs (Welcome, Protect, Promote and Integrate) from previous years, we continue today with the fourth of the 6 new verb pairs Pope Francis has challenged us to act on in his 2020 message on Migrants and Refugees. After 106 years, will the world finally listen?

In order to grow, it is necessary to share. Sharing was an essential element of the first Christian community: “Now the company of those who believed were of one heart and soul, and no one said that any of the things which he possessed was his own, but they had everything in common” (Acts 4:32). God did not want the resources of our planet to benefit only a few. This was not the Lord’s will! We have to learn to share in order to grow together, leaving no one behind. The pandemic has reminded us how we are all in the same boat. Realizing that we have the same concerns and fears has shown us once more that no one can be saved alone. To grow truly, we must grow together, sharing what we have, like the boy who offered Jesus five barley loaves and two fish… yet they proved enough for five thousand people (cf. Jn 6:1-15)!

You can find and read the entire message at www.vatican.va/content/francesco/en/messages/migration/documents/papa-francesco_20200513_world-migrants-day-2020.html.

Please contact Emily Gale in the Finance Office at 614.875.3322 Ext 312 to place an order. If you prefer to send an email, please send to: [email protected].

We will have your order ready to pick up at your convenience in the Church Finance Office, Monday – Friday 8am – 3pm.

TWENTY-FOURTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

RESPONSORIAL PSALMPsalm 103:1-2, 3-4, 9-10, 11-12

R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion.Bless the LORD, O my soul;and all my being, bless his holy name.Bless the LORD, O my soul, and forget not all his benefits.

R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion. He pardons all your iniquities, heals all your ills.He redeems your life from destruction, crowns you with kindness and compassion.

R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion. He will not always chide, nor does he keep his wrath forever. Not according to our sins does he deal with us,nor does he requite us according to our crimes.

R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion. For as the heavens are high above the earth,so surpassing is his kindness toward those who fear him.As far as the east is from the west,so far has he put our transgressions from us.

R. The Lord is kind and merciful, slow to anger, and rich in compassion.

READING II Romans 14:7-9

Brothers and sisters: None of us lives for oneself, and no one dies for oneself. For if we live, we live for the Lord, and if we die, we die for the Lord; so then, whether we live or die, we are the Lord’s. For this is why Christ died and came to life, that he might be Lord of both the dead and the living.

Worship AidSAT 5PM | SUN 8:30 AM | SUN 11:30 AM

READING I Sirach 27:30-28:7Wrath and anger are hateful things, yet the sinner hugs them tight. The vengeful will suffer the LORD’s vengeance, for he remembers their sins in detail. Forgive your neighbor’s injustice; then when you pray, your own sins will be forgiven. Could anyone nourish anger against another and expect healing from the LORD? Could anyone refuse mercy to another like himself, can he seek pardon for his own sins? If one who is but flesh cherishes wrath, who will forgive his sins? Remember your last days, set enmity aside; remember death and decay, and cease from sin! Think of the commandments, hate not your neighbor; remember the Most High’s covenant, and overlook faults.

GOSPELMatthew 18:21-35

Peter approached Jesus and asked him, “Lord, if my brother sins against me, how often must I forgive? As many as seven times?” Jesus answered, “I say to you, not seven times but seventy-seven times. That is why the kingdom of heaven may be likened to a king who decided to settle accounts with his servants. When he began the accounting, a debtor was brought before him who owed him a huge amount. Since he had no way of paying it back, his master ordered him to be sold, along with his wife, his children, and all his property, in payment of the debt. At that, the servant fell down, did him homage, and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back in full.’ Moved with compassion the master of that servant let him go and forgave him the loan. When that servant had left, he found one of his fellow servants who owed him a much smaller amount. He seized him and started to choke him, demanding, ‘Pay back what you owe.’ Falling to his knees, his fellow servant begged him, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you back.’ But he refused. Instead, he had the fellow servant put in prison until he paid back the debt. Now when his fellow servants saw what had happened, they were deeply disturbed, and went to their master and reported the whole affair. His master summoned him and said to him, ‘You wicked servant! I forgave you your entire debt because you begged me to. Should you not have had pity on your fellow servant, as I had pity on you?’ Then in anger his master handed him over to the torturers until he should pay back the whole debt. So will my heavenly Father do to you, unless each of you forgives your brother from your heart.”

LITURGY OF THE EUCHARIST

ACT OF SPIRITUAL COMMUNION(Saint Alphonsus Liguori)

My Jesus, I believe that You are present in the Most Holy Sacrament. I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart. I embrace You as if You were already there and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit me to be separated from You.

Amen.
