Memorial

Memorial 1-2 Campus staff is dedicated to continuing the Ben Carson Reading Room. On November 17th, the Ben Carson Reading Room opened with volunteers spending 2 hours during lunch, with students from each classroom enjoying the wide selection of books.

Farmington

Farmington 5th graders experienced an awesome assembly that explained the meaning behind each fold of our American Flag. The American Legion presented this unique experience in honor of our nation's veterans. They also set a white table representing American POWs and those still MIA. The students learned what an honor it is to be a part of the military and serve our country. Each student was also given a miniature American flag that was held up in the air, simultaneously, in honor of Veteran's Day.

In honor of NOTE-TEMBER Farmington students had the opportunity to write notes of appreciation to any Farmington staff member. The notes were displayed on the THANKFULNESS poster in the lunchroom and will be delivered to the staff members at the end of the month. It was great to see the students showing their appreciation for all that our amazing staff does.

High School On November 11th, the Garden City High School JROTC Honor Guard, joined Mayor Randy Walker and honored guests on stage in O'Leary Auditorium as part of the mayor's annual Veterans' Day program. The student honor guard presented the flags of the five branches of our armed services while members of the Merriman Road Baptist Church sang each specific military hymn. Past and present members of our military were recognized for their service to our country during this special assembly.

Congratulations to our Middle School and High School Pom squads for their success in early November at the Mid American Pompon High Kick/Hip Hop Championships! The Garden City Varsity Pompon team won 1st place in Hip Hop and 1st place in Small Varsity High Kick. Our girls received the second highest score of the day out of more than 50 teams that competed. The Garden City Middle School Pompon won 1st place in the Small Middle School High Kick division. The Varsity Pom and Middle School Pom squads also performed as backup dancers for Andy Grammer during the halftime show at the Lions Game on Thanksgiving Day!

Santaland Parade

Cambridge

Cambridge College and Career Fair For four hours on Nov. 10, 11th and 12th students at Cambridge High School explored their future at a College and Career Fair. More than 20 vendors were on hand to talk to students about their college, universities and vocational schools. Also, there were military recruiters, Garden City Police, Michigan State Police, Excellant Driving School, Zeal Credit Union and Roush Industries. The Greening of Detroit representatives talked about community service opportunities. The students worked on a writing assignment as part of the event and did a scavenger hunt by getting answers to questions related to the different vendors. Completing the hunt was their ticket to a raffle that included big screen TVs, including one donated by Gordon Chevrolet, wireless headphones and many gift cards. There was also plenty of free food, including hot dogs, chips, cookies, muffins, snacks and beverages. The fair was well received by the vendors. "I just wanted to start off by thanking you for inviting me to the Job Fair. I've met with a few of the students since then and we are working to set them on career paths they didn't think were possible," said Army Recruiter Staff Sgt. Steven Hurley. The College and Career Fair was organized by Academic Success Coaches Noral Ford and Sue Mason who already are planning for a second one in March. It also served as a kick-off to a student portfolio project, spearheaded by Noral Ford, Cambridge Academic Success Coach.

Burger Baylor

Shining Star Student, Sarah Gregory

The Shining Star for Burger Baylor is awarded to Sarah Gregory. Sarah came to Burger at a difficult time in her young life. She has worked very hard and is growing in to a young lady with a strong positive attitude toward her future. Sarah determination is amazing as she achieves each skill in her classes. Sarah has become a part of the Burger student body and this is a credit to her individuality – her own way of looking at life and its challenges. A big thank you to her family for all their support. Sarah strives each and every day, and we should all learn from her example. Through the support from her family and the Burger staff, her growth has been tremendous. She is becoming a role model to her fellow classmates. We are very proud to award the Shining Star to Sarah Gregory

Above and Beyond Staff Member, Jeff Edgar

Jeff Edgar is our Above and Beyond at Burger Baylor for many reasons. Jeff has been tireless in his work on our garden at Burger. From the very start he has contributed time and energy throughout spring, summer, and fall. He has prepared the beds for planting, weeding, watering and harvesting. His patience with the students that were involved in the garden project was a key to the gardens success. Hundreds of pounds of produce were delivered to the Inkster Pantry giving fresh vegetables to our community friends. Jeff is a wonderful support to our students and their families. Jeff is an integral part of our school team and is always looking for ways to improve learning for our students. Wherever you ask Jeff for help, his go to answer is always, YES, how can I help. He is looked up to by his colleagues and can motivate helpers to work in the garden in 90 degree weather, and that takes a very special person. For all these reasons and more we are very glad to call Jeff Edgar - OUR SHINING STAR!
