Prayer for Hurricane Season

O God, Master of this passing world, hear the humble voices of your children. The Sea of Galilee obeyed

your order and returned to its former quietude. You are still the Master of land and sea. We live the shadow of a danger over which we have no control: the gulf, like a provoked and angry giant, can awake from its seeming lethargy, overstep its conventional boundaries, invade our land and spread chaos and disaster. During this hurricane season we turn to you, loving Father. Spare us from past tragedies whose memories are still so vivid and whose wounds seem to refuse to heal with the passing of time. O Virgin, Star of the Sea, Our Beloved Mother, we ask you to plead with you Son in our behalf, so that spared from the calamities common to this area and animated with a true spirit of gratitude, we will walk in the footsteps of your divine Son to reach heavenly Jerusalem where a stormless eternity awaits us. Amen. Bishop Maurice Shexnayder

Come Lord Jesus! We would like to offer to our parishioners an oppor-tunity to become members of a Come Lord Je-sus! Bible study group. This is a program developed and maintained by one of our own diocesan priests, Fr. Conley Bertrand, that focuses on the upcoming Sunday readings in a small group setting. Come Lord Jesus! groups are active across our diocese. Through study, prayer and faith sharing in a small group on a weekly basis, members are able to deepen their faith, as well as their appreciation for the Sunday Eucharist, as a help to living out the Gospel day by day. Next week-end, Sept. 10-11, we will have someone at each Mass to speak after Communion about the program. (Those who routinely leave Mass immediately after Commun-ion are invited to adjust their schedules.) In order to actually form groups, anyone at all interested is asked to mark their calendars now for an organizational meeting on Tuesday, Sept. 13th, at 6 pm in the parish hall (across the street). From the Pastor’s Desk

It was several months ago that I met with representatives from the ‘Come, Lord Jesus!’ (CLJ) program to talk about offering this program in our parish. We scheduled it for now, in the fall, so that summer travels and activities would hopefully be completed. This means that I’ve had quite some time to think about it. Of course, lots of other things have happened since then, include our Great Flood, tragic shootings, and other more mundane events. But it’s curious how my thoughts about offering this program went back and forth.

At some moments, the reflections were just plain grandiose. There was a vision of a parish where every single person was involved in a small prayer/study group. Aside from the fact that, to my knowledge, nobody has ever seen this happen, it’s just plain unrealistic. Programs like CLJ are just not for everybody, and for a variety of reasons. There are real time constraints for some, who already feel pulled in every direction by the demands of work, family, and so much more. In addition, some people would just not feel comfortable in a setting like this, so that for them it just isn’t an option. Others might feel like they’re doing enough to live out their faith, and don’t feel a need for another commitment. The list goes on.

After the grandiose visions began to fade, these were sometimes replaced by a vision of a total failure. What if you gave a party, and no one came? These ideas were mostly fear based, and again were unrealistic. Someone will be interested, right?

All this back and forth surfaces one key word: Opportunity. What we are doing is offering to our parish-ioners an opportunity to try a new way to grow in the practice of the faith. If we make the offer, in an under-standable way, and people actually have the chance to consider if it’s right for them, then that is true success. It’s not about how many people sign up, but how many people are offered the opportunity. After that it’s up to them. Or rather, up to you.

So that’s the point: This weekend we are offering the opportunity to try a new way of building faith. Countless people in our Diocese and beyond have benefitted from ‘Come, Lord Jesus!’. So it can work. But you, and only you, can determine if it’s something you should try.

So please consider it. That’s it. If you want more information, that is available. Come to the meeting this Tuesday night, 9/13, at 6 pm across the street at the hall. It’s ok to come, learn, and decide not to join. Or it’s possible to join in forming a group. That’s what this is: an Opportunity.
