As you well know, we are mostlyfamous for our being a jazz cluband all that, but there are otherthings we do that perhaps areless well heralded.Did you know for instance that we run a small radio operation that

makes a weekly show for broadcast on stations as far apart as

Toronto, Berlin and Belgium? well we do - it’s hosted by Ian Shaw,

made here on the premises and will also be on all British Airways

flights in November featuring new British jazz.

And did you know that the Ronnie Scott’s All Stars are also “Guns for

Hire”, having played gigs this summer in Norwich, Fulham, Windsor,

and other glamour UK hotspots. And we are off to the seaside. In late

September the band, with the aforementioned Ian Shaw, will be

playing two nights in St Ives in Cornwall as part of the Festival.

Our Big Band in a Day programme, for kids, starts off again in

early October and will be part of the London Jazz festival on

Sunday 24th November at the Barbican. If you have a teenager, or

know one , who might enjoy the learning process go to the web

site and look up the details.

A word of apology regarding the building works all over the club. Horrid

mess but we hope the massive Ronnie Scott image on the building

hoarding makes it a bit less blunt.

Gig highlights?. Mingus Big Band are back, after last years triumphant

week they return in October for six of the best. Nights. And then

there’s Crusader Wayne Henderson, Jose Feliciano, Kenny Garrett,

Christian Scott, new star Cecile Salvant McLorin... every one a winner.

Few musicians share the ability of saxophonist/composer Mahanthappa toembody the expansive possibilities of his music with his culture. Time andagain, he has eloquently displayed the capacity to absorb numerous stylesand genres of music, combine them with the language of modern jazz, andemerge with a new form still recognizably jazz. After last year’s acclaimed sold-out run, a very welcome return to Ronnie’sfor arguably the greatest big band of them all. There are few sounds in jazzas exciting as the rambunctious, hard-swinging 14 piece Mingus Big Band. But then there have been few musicians and composers as dynamic anddriven as the great late Charles Mingus who died in 1979. During his ownlifetime the great composer often struggled to keep a big band together andalthough his small group recordings are amongst the greatest in jazz it wasalways the voicings of the larger ensemble that Mingus wrote for. This thenis a unique chance to hear some of the most exciting music in jazz heardhow the composer wanted. Under the artistic direction of Sue Mingus, theMingus Big Band performed Thursday nights from 1991 to 2004 at Fez underTime Cafe in New York City. It maintained weekly residencies in the city fromMay 2004 until October 2008, when it began “Mingus Mondays” at JazzStandard. Now Sue brings her peerless ensemble to London for twelveshows in six nights in what will be some of the Autumn’s hottest tickets.
