The Philadelphia Fed’s gauge of manufacturing activity in the mid-Atlantic region of the U.S. jumped to 28 in August from 23.9 in July. Wall Street expected the gauge to fall to 19.2.

The S&P set a new record by closing above 1,990, while the Dow Jones Industrial Average closes above 17,000.

Home Depot said U.S. retail chief Craig Menear will succeed Frank Blake as CEO on November 1. Blake will remain chairman of the blue-chip home improvement retailer.

The No. 2 U.S. bank by assets will pay a $9.65 billion fine, and $7 billion in so-called “consumer relief,” in exchange for settling probes into mortgage-backed securities sold ahead of the 2008 financial crisis.

Test & Procedures Cardiac rehabilitation — also called cardiac rehab — is a customized outpatient program of exercise and education. Cardiac rehabilitation is designed to help you recover from a heart attack, other forms of heart disease or surgery to treat heart disease. Cardiac rehabilitation is often divided into phases that involve monitored exercise, nutritional counseling, emotional support, and support and education about lifestyle changes to reduce your risks of heart problems. The goals of cardiac rehabilitation are to establish an individualized plan to help you regain strength, to prevent your condition from worsening, to reduce your risk of future heart problems, and to improve your health and quality of life. Cardiac rehabilitation programs increase your chances of survival. Both the American Heart Association and American College of Cardiology recommend cardiac rehabilitation programs.

FEATURE ARTICLE

f you’re a small business owner, you are probably already active in social media. And if you’re not active, I would guess that you’re at least considering getting started with social media. Whether your favorite net-work is Facebook, Twitter or Google+, there are some things you should avoid doing if you want to grow your community and use your social media presence to form relation-ships. Here are seven things you should NOT do when using social media for business:

1 I Skip the PlanSo many small business owners dive into social media because everyone tells them they should, but they skip the research and planning phase. Just like any other market-ing activity, it’s important to take time to get to know the networks you are joining, set SMART goals for your use on the sites, and develop a plan of action to achieve your goals.

2 I Lie or MisleadSocial media can feel like a popularity game. There are the “cool” kids, cliques of people who have been around for a while and have created large followings, and everyone else seems to fall behind. It may be tempting to create a fake persona or be less than 100% genuine in what you are sharing in order to elevate your standing and make your follow-ing grow at a faster pace. This is never a good idea, and can not only hurt your reputation, but it can also hurt your brand over the long term.

3 I Ignore Everyone ElseActing like you are the only person out there is a quick way to social media failure. Even if your social media presence is for your brand and not you personally, you may find you are more successful when you inject a little personality into your interactions. This can be as simple as thanking people for retweets and Facebook likes, offering your expertise to help others, and sharing a little of your per-sonal side.

4 I Spam Your Fans, Followers, CirclesSpam isn’t just for email anymore; it has also entered the world of social media. Fig-uring out what spamming is on social sites is tricky because there is not an “opt-in,” per se. Some forms of social media spamming to stay away from include unsolicited sales pitches, posting the same updates over and

over, and sending private messages after being asked to stop.

5 I Be Vulgar, Obnoxious and ConfrontationalOne of the biggest turnoffs on social media sites, especially in business circles, is people who attack their competitors, are obnoxious or are generally offensive. When using social media for business, it’s vital to stay profes-sional and avoid the temptation to constantly vent and air your grievances publicly. And it doesn’t stop with you. If you have staff or team members managing your social media presence for your business, you should pro-vide training and a guide that sets expecta-tions about what should be posted and what should not.

6 I Share Too MuchWhen you’re using social media for busi-ness, letting a little of your personality show through is a great way to start con-versations and form relationships. There’s a thin line, though, between being engag-ing and sharing too much. A good rule of thumb is to think of what you’re posting as if it’s a personal message going out to your most important client or a mentor. If you

wouldn’t say it in front of people who are valuable in your business, keep it off social media sites.

7 I Self-Promote All the TimePromoting yourself and your business is likely part of why you’re on social media to begin with, but these networks are vastly different from other marketing tools. While you can and should share your experienc-es and the value of your business, products and services, balance your self-promotion by promoting and helping others. This will make your friends and followers much more receptive to your promotional posts, and your followers may be more likely to pass your promotions on to their own networks.

Keep in mind that there are a lot of different ways to use social media, and there really aren’t rules about what you should and shouldn’t do. There are, however, best practices you can follow if you want to create thriving and engaged communities on social media sites. And avoiding these seven activities will get you moving on the right path. More updates in 2014 Octobers Chamber Monthly Business-News®

Former Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer said he will step down as a member of the blue-chip software maker’s board of directors, but plans to hold shares of the firm for the “foreseeable future.”

Members of the Federal Reserve’s policy-setting board honed their strat-egy for eventually hiking interest rates and reducing the central bank’s mas-sive balance sheet at the late-July meet-ing, minutes show. Without providing specific timing, officials said they would probably target a federal funds rate in the range of 0.25 percentage point “at the time of liftoff and for some time thereafter.” The officials also agreed the Fed’s balance sheet “should be reduced gradually and predictably.”

Nonpartisan Goverment Accountability Office rules Pentagonbroke law by not properly informing Congress about the swap of Army Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl for five Taliban leaders earlier this year.

The Commerce Department reports retail sales in July were unchanged from the month prior, while economists expected sales to rise 0.2%. Excluding the auto component, sales rose 0.1%, missing forecasts for a 0.4% increase.

The number of Americans filing for first-time unemployment benefits fell last week to 298,000, from an upwardly revised 312,000 the week prior. Economists expected claims to fall to 300,000 from an initially reported 311,000.

The Commerce Department reports the U.S. trade deficit narrowed to $41.54 billion in June from $44.66 billion the month prior. Econo-mists expected the gap to widen slightly to $44.7 billion.

The media company posted fiscal third-quarter adjusted earnings per share of $1.28 on revenues of $12.47 billion, surpassing Wall Street expectations for profits of $1.17 per share on revenues of $12.16 billion. Shares of Walt Disney traded 1% higher in after-hours action.

The Commerce Department reports U.S. factory orders rose 1.1% in June from the month prior, beating Street views of a 0.6% gain

A gauge of activity in the U.S. service sector from the Institute for Supply Man-agement jumped to 58.7 in July from 56 in June, topping estimates of 56.3. The reading indicates the rate of expansion is picking up. The Institute for Supply Management’s gauge of manufacturing activity in the U.S. rose to 57.1 in July, beating esti-mates of a rise to 56, from 55.3 the month prior.

Thomson Reuters and the University of Michigan’s gauge of consumer sentiment fell to 81.8 in July, below economists’ expectations of 82. The reading is the lowest since March.

The U.S. economy tacked on 209,000 jobs in July, below consensus esti-mates of a gain of 233,000 jobs. The unemployment rate, meanwhile, ticked higher to 6.2% from 6.1% the month prior, where it was expected to remain. The labor force participation rate also rose to 62.9% from 62.8% in June.

The Institute for Supply Management- Chicago’s gauge of manufacturing activity in the Midwest region slowed to 52.6 in July from 62.6 in June, wide-ly missing economists’ expectation of a reading of 63. In July, the index reached its lowest level since June 2013.

The world’s biggest publicly-traded energy company posted profits per share of $2.05, topping views of $1.86. Rev-enue, meanwhile came in at $106.67 billion, lower than the $108.38 billion Wall Street anticipated. Shares were little changed in pre-market action.

The Federal Reserve said inflation has ‘moved somewhat closer’ to its long-term target; however, there is slack in the U.S. labor market. As such, the cen-tral bank cut its bond purchases to $25 billion a month from $35 billion, as expected. It also reaffirmed its plans to keep rates at historic lows until the economy improves further.

Twitter revealed adjusted second- quarter profits of 2 cents a share, beating estimates of a loss of a penny a share. Revenues of $312 million also beat views of $283 million. The micro-blogging site said it expects to earn between $330 million and $340 million in the current quarter, compared to estimates of $324 million. Shares spiked more than 18% in extended trading.

American Express said its second- quarter earnings climbed 13% from the year prior to $1.43 a share. It wasn’t immediately clear whether the figure was comparable to Wall Street estimates of $1.38 a share. Revenues net of interest expense of $8.7 billion matched estimates. Shares of the blue-chip credit-card firm fell in extended trading.
