Come Home!

When I was a child, like now, I was an outdoor enthusiast. In those days it was safe for children to venture out on their bicycles, and to come home when it started getting dark outside. I always remember the glow of lights inside the house as I pedaled mother’s voice calling me, “Linda! Time to come home!”

Recently a woman of Norwegian background visited our church. She said our worship service felt like “coming home.” Many others have expressed the same thing. Whether you have been away from church for a couple of weeks of summer vacation, as I have, or for a long time, you are invited to “Come home!” Whether you have ventured near or far, our Prodigal Father/Mother God calls to you: “It is time to come home!” Come home to God. Come home to Christ. Come home to the body of Christ, your family of faith, at First Lutheran. Our Prodigal Father/Mother God doesn’t care what you have done or left undone, but only that you hear God’s voice calling you to come home. That you turn from is that has kept you away (remember, the word “repent” literally means “turn”) and come home. God’s light fills our sanctuary with a welcoming glow. Come. Come home.

Each September we at First Lutheran celebrate Homecoming Weekend. This yeSaturday and Sunday, September 15 and 16. That weekend we will have a Lutheran version of an “Altar Call.” After the sermon, you will be invited to Come Home pray at the Altar your renewed commitment to God, to Christ, weekend we will also resume our 8:00 AM worship service, so you have three opportunities to worship: Saturday at 5 PM, and Sunday at 8 or 9 AM.

Homecoming weekend is also Sunday School Rally Day. Toward the end of our 9worship service we will bless this year’s Sunday School staff and children, and kick off this year’s Sunday School.

Story Hour for Young Children and their Parents: Homecoming Sunday, September 16th

Are you a parent of a young, pre-school-aged child or children? Did you know that we have a new group here at First Lutheran for parents with young children? This is a group for children who are still too young for Sunday School, but would benefit from stories and playtime geared toward them, as well as a group to provide some support, connections, and fellowship for the parents! We had a brainstorming session last spring, as well as a date night for parents, during which Pastor Linda, Youth Director Carrie Koslofsky, and some of our wonderful youth babysat for the kids so parents could go out on a date.

Our next event will be a Story Hour, led by Catherine Sullivan and Pastor Linda, which will follow our 9:00 AM Sunday worship service on Homecoming Weekend, September 16th. Weather permitting, we will gather under the large shade tree in the yard behind the church office building at 7 Brayton Street. We will have stories, snack, time for children to play at our playground, and a simple cookout (hot dogs and hamburgers). Join us!

In October we will have another Date Night for Parents.

Any questions? Contact Catherine Sullivan @[email protected] or 398-0297

YOUTHWelcome back!!

Two years of hard work, fundraising, and planning came to fruition this July when seven youth and three adults from FELC traveled to New Orleans to participate in the National ELCA Youth Gathering, “Citizens with the Saints.” We were the only participants from Rhode Island!

The trip was a huge success…and I mean HUGE. The Superdome was packed with over 35,000 people every night, and the entertainment and keynote speakers were world class! Afterwards, tens of thousands of youth poured onto the city streets and peacefully (yet energetically!) marched to their hotels and destinations, and the same thing every morning. You had to see it to believe it! And you WILL see it because we want to share our pictures and stories with you. Therefore, on September 23rd, we will have our youth kick-off after church, which will include pictures and conversations about our trip during coffee hour. So send me your pictures!

This weekend is New England Synod Youth Gathering in Hammonasset. We have six youth attending, and they are going to be reminiscing about the NOLA trip. Hopefully the rain will be gone by then!

September 15th is the E-Waste Recycling Drive organized by Joe Devine. I’m sure he could use some more help if anyone is interested. If you are, let me know and I will forward your information to him. Unfortunately, there is no Crop Walk this year in Goddard, so I am still looking for a new service project for October.

Confirmation orientation for parents and youth will be September 26th at 7:00, and the first classes will be October 3rd and 17th. We will be having drop-in from 3 to 5 and then dinner at 6:00 as we did last year. I will be sending out letters to all confirmation students next week, and I will have the final schedule at orientation.

Many of our senior youth (those who have been confirmed) are interested in continuing to meet to discuss issues and life as a Christian. Therefore, we are starting a new meet-up one Wednesday evening a month where we will watch films and documentaries that inspire and challenge us to discuss moral/ethical dilemmas and issues from the perspective of Christians in the modern world. This may involve watching movies that require permission from parents, but all films and topics would be evaluated for appropriateness and discussion purposes. My plan is that we could have this get together at my house in Warwick (just up the street!) and cook dinner together before the film. Let me know who is interested!

I have lots of ideas for fellowship for the upcoming year, including movie nights and more outdoor activities. However, I want to hear all your thoughts and ideas, so I look forward to our kick-off on September 23rd! See you all there!!

Peace,

Carrie

Electronics Recycling Drive

4th Electronics Recycling Drive to Benefit “Oceans of Grace”

Saturday September 15th from 9am until 12 noon is collection day for old electronic devicesat the Texas Roadhouse parking lot on Division Road in Warwick, RI.

Bridge Technical Solutions is hosting a computer and electronics collection event on Saturday September 15th to benefit “Oceans of Grace.” If you have old or unwanted electronics that you wish to dispose of, take them to the Texas Roadhouse parking lot in Warwick anytime between 9am and 12 noon. There will be trucks set up in the parking lot to receive your e-waste. This simple action will keep electronics out of the regular trash, cut communities’ dumping costs and raise money for a good cause! A minimum $1 fee per small item is highly encouraged with a higher fee of $5 or $10 for larger items. Bridge Technical Solutions will cover the fee for those unable to make a donation.

Most electronic products used in our workplaces and homes contain hazardous substances such as lead and mercury. When these products reach the end of their useful lives or become obsolete, some are considered hazardous waste. Hazardous waste cannot be discarded in the regular trash. However, current figures compiled by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency indicate that more than 2 million tons of electronic waste end up in landfills each year! A great option for disposal of this waste is to bring these items to our collection day.

This event will be the fourth e-recycling drive to benefit First Lutheran Church that BRIDGE has sponsored since 2009. This spring we raised over $1,900 for “Oceans of Grace”.

What can you drop off?CPUs/computers & monitors Telephones, cell phonesLaptops TVsSpare computer parts DVD players & VCRsKeyboards, mice CamerasServers, routers, UPSs, Radios, MP3 playersNetwork equipment Home audio – receivers, speakers
