As we move from summer to fall, you’ll notice slightly cooler weather (only

slightly – we are in Florida after all) and a full calendar of PCA events from September through December ranging from Zonefest (Labor Day weekend in Melbourne), to Drivers Education at Sebring, Date Your Porsche nights, monthly breakfast gatherings, Autocross, and more (see Schedule of Events, page 7 .)Our biggest event will be our own 60th Anniversary Celebration and Gala, Nov . 5 to 7 at Saddlebrook Resort, Wesley Chapel . We’ll have activities for all members, young or old, and for all Porsche models . Advance registration is required in https://Clubregistration .net . Updates will be announced in our eNews e-mails and on our website, but as of the writing of this message the agenda is:

Suncoast PCA 60th Anniversary and GalaFriday, November 5: Onsite registration will open at 4 p .m . in the hotel lobby, followed by a themed buffet dinner with lots of time to mingle with your PCA friends . (Note: All meals are included with your registration fee .)

Saturday, November 6: Onsite registration in the morning for Saturday arrivals and breakfast for all attendees . Our first car event will be the Concours, to include both Judged (National PCA Judging standards) and People’s Choice categories . People’s Choice will be based on popular votes; you can enter any Porsche and feel free to do whatever you think will attract votes! It promises to be a fun time with some pretty special cars . (See Gerry Curts’ article in this issue for more details .) A boxed lunch will be available with

the Member Hospitality Suite; as well as supporting Ready for Life fundraising including setting up and monitoring silent auction items and helping with Wine, Wheels and Wishes . We also need volunteers to help with the Ready for Life Golf Tournament on Sunday . Please reach out to President@

Suncoastpca .org to raise your hand . Your fellow members appreciate your involvement!

Speaking of Concours – if you’re unsure of how to prep your car for a judged event, we’re offering two educational sessions during which you will learn all about PCA National standards and tips and tricks on car preparation from our own

experts, Gerry Curts and Mark Krekorian . The content will be the same for both sessions, but different dates and locations to accommodate members across the region . The first session will be Saturday morning, Aug . 28 at RennHaus in Sarasota . The second will be Saturday morning, Sept . 18 at Vortex Motorsports in Tampa . We’ll start each morning at 8 a .m . with coffee and donuts courtesy of our hosts and time to socialize and tour their facilities . The educational session will be from 9 a .m . to 12 noon and include hands-on demonstrations of various cleaning techniques . Registration is open for both events in https://Clubregistration .net .

A day to remember . Just about everyone in the country can remember where

they were on September 11, 2001 . For me, I was at a government facility for a meeting

in Washington, DC . Since all flights were cancelled, I just kept my rental car and decided to drive home from DC . Getting out of the city was a real problem because from where I was I had to drive by the

Pentagon, and of course all roads in the area were closed . It took me about 3 hours to get out of the metro DC area and onto I-95 South . By the time I started clearing traffic and was actually driving at a reasonable speed, I thought I had it made . Well as it

THE WAY IT WASby Tom Briest

Dateline September 2001 turned out, when I finally did get down to Florida, there was a hurricane coming into the West Coast and the further I drove across I-4, the worse the weather got . When I finally made it to Tampa, I was one of the

last cars across the Howard Franklin bridge, as the DOT closed it about 10 minutes after I crossed the bay . n

Memories of 9/11 by Norm Sippel

I’ll never forget .

I had been to the World Trade Center a few times . One time it was for an automotive press event and we had cocktails at Windows on The World on the 107th floor of the North Tower . Another time was a business/social evening with a client and his wife starting with cocktails at WoW . Dinner that night was at River Café across the East River in Brooklyn from which we had a great view of the Twin Towers from water level .

On the morning of September 11, 2001, I was up early doing last minute preparations on the 1973 BMW 3 .0 CS that was selling that morning . The buyer showed up and we loaded it and a cache

of parts onto his trailer . It was a car I had spent a few years working on to replace front fenders and both rockers (They are notorious rust candidates), smooth its dinged flanks with hammer and dolly, and totally prep it for a high-quality paint job . Unfortunately, it got the best of me . I sold it . As I watched the new owner haul it away up the driveway, I was sad to see it go .

I went back inside and then found my dear wife, Penny, sitting in front of the TV in tears . She had been watching the beginning of the debacle that took place that day . Little did we know until a day later that the son, daughter-in-law and granddaughter of good friends were on

the plane that hit the second tower—tragedy close to home .

I few years ago we went to the 9/11 Memorial in lower Manhattan . Among the parts of the memorial is a room filled with the photos of those who were killed that day . We walked in and were immediately drawn to where our friends’ children’s photos appeared . Who says spirits can’t guide us?

Only in 2004 when we sold our house in semi-rural Connecticut did we learn that the gentleman who lived diagonally across the road was among those trapped in upper floors of one of the towers . Our hearts still break with the memories . The loss of the CS is irrelevant in comparison . n

PHOTO OF THE MONTH

Control and Focusa nice Porsche hat to you for this image and a nice surprise .

So for all of you who send me photos of your or anyone else’s Porsche, keep in mind that you have complete control on just how your photos turn out . It could be a dud or a keeper; it’s all up to you .

With that in mind, please submit what photo you have, and if I like it, I’ve got a nice Porsche hat and a surprise for your car . . n

by George Wienhold, Profile Photo Editor

What’s really nice in photography is that, when

you pick up your image maker, you have complete control . Be it shutter speed to show movement or not, the depth of field of focus on what the photographer has in mind, even the mode of the lighting that is captured . Unlike our eyes, all of those adjustments are available with our image makers . It’s how we use them that determines whether the photograph is a dud or a keeper .

What we have for this month’s Photo of the Month image is a keeper .

What makes this month’s winner from Bryan James out of Lithia, Florida, is the photo just POPS . Using the controls available to him he captured this outstanding image . Taken on the side of the road on a stop from Fish Hawk Porsche Cars

and Coffee gathering this past February, his Porsche stands out from the rest of his group . Hats off to you Bryan . I’ll be sending

Be Safe and Thanks,

TECH NOTES

A Lot of Hot Air

A lot of hot air is what can save your life in case of a frontal crash if you have one

of the earlier Porsche airbags . Actually, hot nitrogen, produced by a chemical reaction in the airbag .

Have you ever wondered how airbags work? What if any is their maintenance? Or, have you heard that you shouldn’t use a full face helmet in conjunction with an airbag? Keep on reading and we’ll fill you up, I mean fill you in ;)

The goal of an airbag is to slow the passenger’s forward motion as evenly as possible in a fraction of a second when a crash occurs, because as we all know speed doesn’t kill, it’s the sudden stop that gets you .

In 1987 Porsche introduced the first automobile in the world to have as standard equipment driver and passenger airbags . That car was the 944 Turbo . The 944 and 944S offered airbags as optional equipment that same year . Eleven years later, in 1998, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) mandated as standard equipment dual frontal airbags in cars and a year later in light trucks as well .

The airbag’s inflation system causes potassium nitrate (KNO3) to react with sodium azide (NaN3) to produce nitrogen gas which inflates the bag .Think of the airbag inflation system as a solid rocket booster . The airbag ignites a solid propellant which burns very rapidly and creates a large volume of gas to inflate the bag . The airbag actually bursts from its storage at up to 200 mph . A second later the nitrogen gas dissipates through small holes in the bag which completely deflates it .

Today, the technology has evolved to also include side impact airbags, curtain airbags, side tubular airbag knee airbags and others to further protect the vehicle’s occupants . The technology also changed so that today’s airbags produce cool nitrogen, not hot gas . (Ed . Note: I have a friend whose wrists were burned in the early airbag days .)

From impact to full deployment, a driver’s airbag takes approximately 30 - 40 milliseconds (0 .030 - 0 .040 second), an eye blink takes 0 .2 second, while the passenger airbag, which is larger, takes

by Pedro P. Bonilla SCR PCA

side or curtain airbags must happen within 10 - 15 milliseconds (0 .010 - 0 .015 second) .These side airbags can deploy much quicker because they don’t depend on a chemical reaction as with the frontal bags . They have their own high-pressure gas canisters and the gas is released cold .

40- 80 milliseconds to inflate .Side impact airbags must inflate and deploy much quicker because there is no crumple zone and very little space between the passenger and the door . Side-collision detection must take place within 3 milliseconds (0 .003 second) and complete deployment of the

Happy Porsche’ing,

Porsche uses a combination of airbags in their vehicles to protect its passengers:

Aside from the frontal driver and passenger airbags, the Porsche Side Impact Protection (POSIP) system on the sports cars comprises side impact protection elements in the doors and two airbags in each side .

The Macan, for instance, is equipped with

full-size frontal airbags just like the sports cars, but also offers driver and passenger knee airbags and the POSIP includes side airbags in the front seats, curtain airbags along the entire roof frame and side windows from the A-pillar to the C-pillar, and side airbags for the rear compartment .

Regarding maintenance, Porsche’s

airbag systems are very well made and are supported by a very sophisticated self-diagnostic capability . Even the very early airbag systems will detect minute changes within the system and return an error message or warning light if specific electronic values are exceeded or operational issues are detected . If your airbag warning light lights up when you turn on the ignition and then goes off by itself a few seconds later, your airbag system is ready to work for you .

Porsche recommends inspecting the airbag system eight years after manufacture and every two years thereafter for the life of the car . Porsche does not recommend replacing airbags at any specific time interval, only when, if ever, they are inflated .

And the one about not using a full-face helmet in conjunction with an airbag?

Myth or fact?If you are using a three-point restraint (shoulder/lap seatbelt) such as on a DE or AX, there is no problem in using a full face helmet . If you are using a racing seat with a five or six point restraint harness, you should not have an operational airbag .The reason is that with a 3-point seatbelt, in a frontal crash, your torso will move forward as the belt tightens and stretches a bit, aligning your chest with the inflating airbag, as it was designed . With a 5- or 6-point restraint, your torso will not move forward appreciably, just your head . This puts your chin in line with the inflating bag that can catch the edge of the helmet’s chin protection area and snap your head back!

That’s why you don’t find airbags in racecars .

Also remember that the airbag system is not a substitute for seatbelts . They both work together making your car safer for you and your passenger(s) .

For more information on airbags and more, please visit my website: www PedrosGarage .com .

SOCIAL RAMBLINGS

Busy Days and Evenings Ahead

We have been so pleased since we last wrote about our social activities

and our ever-growing group of people in the club interested in being together and sharing experiences and common interests . One of the greatest challenges we face is the fact that the club covers so much territory . We are attempting to have our events over a larger area and bring together people from all four corners of our club area . We have brought on a monthly breakfast on the third Saturday of each month in Venice, and will expand that to another monthly breakfast on the fourth Saturday of each month in Bradenton . We have had dinners as far north as Brandon, and down to Nokomis in the south . We are expanding yet this month to Lakewood Ranch at McGrath’s and September to Bradenton . Keep checking with Club Registration for our upcoming events . At this writing, we have four venues available for signup .

by Ed Rossiter, Social Director

We have been looking to add additional members to our committee who will find locations and host dinners and breakfasts in the northern sector of our club territory . That is the biggest challenge at this time .

It will become more challenging when Season arrives again to find restaurants and other venues that will allow us to have an event on their premises .

Many of our venues have been providing a special parking area for us to display our cars, as you can see in some of the pictures . Waterfrontoo in Nokomis gave us the entire front row of their lot

with a parking attendant to keep other cars from ours . Very kind of them . It gives our members and guests the feeling that the restaurant really appreciates our business, and wishes for us to return .

We are attempting to standardize our Club Registration signup schedule, and venue size . We hope this will alleviate some confusion we have had in the past . All signups for a month

will begin on the first of that month or before, no matter when in the month it is held . Also, we are seeking restaurants, bars, breweries, and other venues, that can allow us to plan 40 people to attend . I know our breakfasts can only support 30, but that seems to be all that currently wish to attend the breakfasts .

Upcoming events include Mattison’s Riverfront Restaurant on the Bradenton Riverwalk, which will be our September Porsche Date Night on September 21st, and we will begin our Second Monthly breakfast also in Bradenton at the new Skillet’s restaurant on September 25th . I am now beginning the search for a good dinner venue for October . n

(Ed . Note: I would request that when we go to Suncoast events that we all wear our Suncoast PCA name badges . As editor, I like to caption photos with people’s names . Of course, if you want to remain anonymous, leave your nametag in the glovebox . It’s okay .)

Where are we?

Ed

RV adventure since we retired last year, and we have loved every day of it . Every few days we ask ourselves “what do we miss” from home… and the answer has usually been, “Nothing!” Of course, we miss friends, local restaurants, and Suncoast PCA events; but we seem to have adapted to the RV life pretty quickly . Oh, and that Porsche back home in our garage? Absolutely miss driving it!!!

For the past few days we have been planning a rally for Suncoast’s 60th Anniversary weekend at the Saddlebrook Resort . It will be a combination TSD/Gimmick

A quorum was present

• Meeting called to order at 7:00 p.m. by President Denise Remus.

• Minutes of the June meeting were approved with no changes.

• John Sabatini has resigned his position as Vice President but stays on as TRSS Committee Chair.

• Discussion of our upcoming 60th Anniversary Celebration. Cost to members attending will be $155 per person plus Saddlebrook’s cost of member’s room. We are seeking sponsors for various events. More details in an upcoming Suncoast eNews. The celebration is taking the place

Rally with your choice of using either set of route instructions . Of course this planning has been done using Google Maps, but we will be back home with plenty of time to

run the routes and verify the instructions . We hope to see you there for the anniversary weekend . Don’t miss it…!

As a side trip on our RV adventure we stopped by the French Lick Resort during Parade week . We were not registered for any PCA events,

but by camping in the resort’s RV section we had full access to all amenities . What a beautiful place it is . And saying it is large is an understatement . It encompasses two different hotel complexes, which are

of the events we didn’t hold due to COVID like the 2020 Holiday Meeting & Party.

• Discussion was held about the club covering a substantial part of the cost of the Anniversary Celebration to give back to our members. It was put to a vote and passed unanimously.

• The board meeting in September will again be held via Zoom as COVID continues to be rampant in Florida.

• Rally originally planned for October will be postponed to coincide with Anniversary weekend.

• Discussed, the October 9th – Back Door Tour to Sebring Intl. Raceway.

• September DE is on schedule with COVID guidelines in place. November DE dates changed to: November 12, 13, & 14

• Autocross events: St. Pete, Venice. 2021 Awards in December

• Planning for 48 Hours will proceed via Zoom.

• Board voted in favor of 60th Anniversary logo #2

• Question raised re. instruction for use of PCA National file hosting service “Glovebox.”

• Meeting ended

connected by a Trolley running on train tracks between the two . We sure felt like Parade attendees as we checked out the Goodie Store and the various displays of really nice Porsches from all generations of production . That is one thing Parade always does very well, with local dealers and PCNA bringing in some special P-cars to view .

We toured both hotel locations and met up with a few Suncoasters at each location . Sharing a few moments with friends at an event like this is always special . We have great memories (and photos) from Porsche Parades over the years which are lasting us a lifetime . And, it’s always nice to see familiar faces when we are so far from home!

So until we see you in November, drive your Porsches and prepare for some rally fun! n

IN THE ZONE

Zone 12’s OktoberFast Club Race, DE, and Autocross at Daytona - October 22-24

OktoberFast is our Zone 12 Club Race at Daytona International Speedway – and

it’s a lot of fun! As always, we’ll have an Advanced Solo DE and a super-fun Autocross on the infield Kart track. But this year, we’ll also offer a nighttime Solo DE for advanced drivers! Yes, you can feel like you’re driving Rolex, just like the big boys!

All registration will open soon, on ClubRegistration.net: Club Race, Solo DE, Nighttime Solo DE, Autocross, and Volunteers. The DE Team is currently finalizing all the details, but the nighttime DE will be open to all solo DE drivers and Club Racers who are registered for OktoberFast. There will be a separate entry fee for the nighttime events, and cars must have headlights. If you’re a solo DE driver or a racer, please plan to join us and experience the Daytona excitement under the lights!

by Lisa Lewis, Zone 12 Rep

This year’s OktoberFast will be bigger and better than ever, with the Club Race, Advanced Solo DE, Nighttime Solo DE, Autocross, Charity Track Touring, and a People’s Choice Car Show.

We’ll need more Volunteers than ever, so if you’d like to help out and learn what it’s like to be behind the scenes at Daytona, please plan to be a Volunteer (cool T-shirt included!). We’ll open registration soon, but if you’re interested, please email Ray with any questions: [email protected].

This year we’ll offer track touring opportunities on Saturday and Sunday, providing donations to a worthy new charity, Cure SMA, which is dedicated to the treatment and care of spinal muscular

atrophy (SMA). SMA is the number one genetic cause of death for infants, and it takes away a person’s ability to walk, eat, or breathe.

Several of our Regions will be planning a drive over to Daytona for the car show,

autocross or just to watch the races; check with your leadership team to find out if your Region will be having a group event. Plan to come to Daytona and enjoy all that the

weekend has to offer! With such a variety of events coming up,

I hope you can find something of interest to you and your family.

Hope to see you at one of the events this summer or fall! n

A good number of Suncoasters either knew, or now know, that one of our

favorite gathering places for tour starts is the San Antonio City Park in Pasco County . Drivers and navigators for twenty-seven Porsches of different models (twenty-eight with our Black Edition 997 .2) were at that gathering place at the August 7th Pecks Old Port Cove tour start . (Photo No . 1)

Several days prior to the tour, each registered driver and navigator received both the Route Instructions and the Tour Run Groups as file attachments to ClubRegistration (ClubReg) emails sent to all . The Route Instructions were self-explanatory, but unless you have participated in a tour setup by us, you may not know what the Run Group document is .

After the close of registration on ClubReg, we use a tour roster to separate the registered drivers into small groups of three to five-

cars . Each group has a Lead (first car), and a Sweep Car (last car in the small group) . Both the Lead and Sweep cars have a navigator on board . This is the Run Group document .The lead driver and navigator have prior experience as to tours and tour “etiquette .” Yes, there is tour etiquette; perhaps that term is a good subject for another article .

Unfortunately, some drivers don’t know how valuable a navigator is on a tour . Those individuals will register as a “Single,” i .e ., no navigator . Single here is not meant to be a pejorative, or used to discourage individuals from registering as a driver-only, but know that a Single requires special and unique care in a Suncoast PCA tour .

For public safety and individual survival purposes, a Single should not attempt to read printed instructions while driving on the route, and thus take his/her eyes off the road and surrounding traffic movements . It should go without saying, if the Single takes the time before the tour to read the Route Instructions to know key landmarks, it is helpful to the group as to keeping their Porsches together while on the tour .

In Suncoast tours setup by us, any Single is placed as the second or third car in the individual small groups .The Single is one of the few cars we want to be driven following the leading car(s), while hopefully knowing some route landmarks from a prior read of the instructions . Too, groups with a Single are told that it is “bad form” for that three- to four-car group to lose a Single on the tour . Usually, that comment gets a laugh, but it sinks in with the group . Too, all members of the small group know which car is a Single .

Now to the groups and the leads who helped make this tour . They were:

Group 1 - Tom and Cindy Briest; Group 2 - Page and Lee Obenshain; Group 3 – Jim and Pat Mueller; Group 4 – Dennis and Sue O’Keefe; Group 5 - Bob and Debbie Viertel; Group 6 – Brian West and Jonathan Grabski; and Group 7 – Bob and Missy Teasley, with George and Marlene Wienhold, the overall Tour Sweeps .

Thanks to all who participated in the Pecks Old Cove Tour . Speaking just for ourselves, it was a fun tour and outing! n

Another nice Saturday morning brought 29 Porschephiles to Skillet’s again . It

included some new people and at least one long-time PCA member—Pete Bartelli in his yellow 356 Carrera . Pete is going to Parade . It will be his 40th . Wow!

The level of conversation was high . It sounded like everyone was having a great time and it continued as the wait staff was clearing the dining room and again in the parking lot .

See you there next 3rd on Saturday .Don’t forget, we will start these Saturday

morning breakfasts at Skillet’s on Rt . 64 in Bradenton in September . That one will be on the 4th Saturday at 8:30 a .m . n

After an uneventful, other than bad traffic in the Atlanta and Chattanooga areas,

drive from Florida following our daughter Heather and her son Zac . We arrived at French Lick, IN, Sunday afternoon, July 11 eager to register for Parade . First we needed to find grandsons Andrew and Jake who drove up from the Louisville, KY area . With them in tow we headed to the hotel to look for the registration room . Soon after entering the crowd of PCA folks, we ran into Danny and Sharron Shields who told us where to go next . While chatting with them, Mark Krekorian joined us . He was taking a cool-down break from his Concours prep in the parking garage .

Registration was organized by the assigned car number . There, we were met by the smiling faces of Tom and Cindy Briest, the volunteers staffing the section for our car, number 813 . They gave us the packet to carry around the room to check in for all the events our group had entered as well as some good advice on how to proceed . Thus, we had encountered several Suncoast Florida Region (SFR) friends soon after arriving . All four name badges, 813A for me, 813B for Sue, C and D for the boys, were designated as SFR affiliates . This comes into play later as the boys win some trophies .

As those of you who have attended Parades know, there are a multitude of activities with many at the same time or overlapping others, making it impossible to see many of them, so this reviews only what we were able to do . The first big event, and the main one for many, the Concours d’Elegance is held on Monday and is usually on a golf course or other grassy outdoor area . Unfortunately, just as at this site for

the 2015 Parade, the grounds were too wet and rain was forecast forcing the event to be held in the hotel parking garage . Not an ideal site by far since it was spread out over three floors with poor lighting in many areas . Nevertheless, the Concours stalwarts came through with their usual impressive display .

The 1962 356 S-90 shown by Gerald Curts and Pete Bartelli won class RS01F with the near-perfect score of 299 .3 representing SFR about as well as possible! Randy Bach won his class showing a 2020 Taycan Turbo . Mark Krekorian’s 2014 991 Targa placed 4th in class PP12Y; he also served as a judge for other classes . There was a large display of various open Porsches and another of historic ones .

The main traditional event Tuesday is the TSD (time, speed, distance) rally which covered about 125 miles spread over four hours with several breaks for comfort and one for lunch . Who knew Indiana had such hilly country with narrow crooked roads?

Not me . I thought I was back in WV many years ago . It was a very fun to drive in our Cayman, albeit a challenge to maintain the designated speeds at times . There are six classes based on rally equipment used from R01 with unlimited aids to R06 with none . As most know, the objective is to arrive at the unknown checkpoints following obscure directions at exactly the correct time . Each second early or late is a one-point penalty . The winners were Thomas Gould, driver, and Lisa Gould, his daughter/navigator, with the amazing score of 13 over 6 checkpoints . They are from San Diego region and he is a co-founder of Pelican Parts, I learned from their website .

Surprising to me, only five SFR members participated in the TSD rally . Susan Messina, driver, and John Wes Pierson, navigator, were 17th of 34 in class R04 . Tom and Cindy Briest were 3rd in R05 and thanks to my navigator grandson Zac Saubert, of Thoroughbred region, we finished 2nd in R05 with a 136 . Perhaps the third time actually is “the charm,” as this was our third rally, all at Parades . There was also a Demo Rally to test a new concept using some sort of scoring app that will require no checkpoint workers, as I understand it . There were no SFR participants .

Wednesday and Thursday are autocross days and fortunately we got a break from the Florida-like heat and rain for this event held at the French Lick Municipal Airport about 5 .5 miles from the resort . Well at least it was dry . The autocross results, still labeled

The underground Concours

The first Wendler Spyder

unofficial as this is written, are rather vague as they include only first names and last name initial with no mention of the drivers region . I think I have figured out all of the SFR participants; my apologies if some were missed . The course was about a mile long using some taxiways and most of the main runway with many cones rendering the best times all over one minute .

First day is most stock classes . Dan S ., our own Danny Shields was first in S05O with a time of 91 .775 which was the fastest, as his usual, for the first day . Thomas B . or Tom Briest was third in this class at 95 .222 . Sharron S . (Shields) won S05W, time 99 .966 . The second day finishes the stock classes and includes all P, I and M cars . Continuing the SFR winning ways in P05O is Bill S . (Sumansky) getting through this long course in only 90 .299 seconds . Grandson Zac was second in this class (90 .852) . Tori Lewis was third in P05W at 102 .731 . Our Heather (97 .435) won this class . FTD was Dave M . in a M02O 914-6 (79 .416) and fastest female in a S13W Taycan was Wendy S . (91 .641) .

The Wolfgangs represented SFR well, as they often do, at the Art Show . Gary was first in the Sculpture

category, with Jan placing first and third in Jewelry . They also participated in the Gimmick Rally in the 2 Passenger class with a score of 16 . In the 2+Passenger class, the McGaughey family, Timothy, Nicole, Mia and Lily won the third place trophy in one of the several Parade events that include children .

The 5K run had 14 classes based on age and gender ranging from 6-12 males to 70+ male and 70+ female . The SFR region was represented by only two participants, both in the 13-19 class . Our Jake Hamill, 15, was the fastest male with a time of 20 .41 and winner of the age group . His older brother Andrew, 19, was second in that age group and 5th overall at 24 .28 .

Altogether, it was a fun Parade for 15 cars from Suncoast folks and definitely for the Hamill family . This was the 21st Parade for Sue and Me . We have already made plans to attend the Poconos Parade next year . Hope to see many of you there where the mountain weather should be cooler than Florida . n

The Porsche Parade Concours d`Elegance was the premier Parade competition event

and the highlight of the 60th Parade week . Those who chose to enter this event prepared their car for weeks, sometimes months, hoping to show well at the French Lick resort . When they arrived many spend up to 20 hours doing final prep . Quite a sight to see .

There were 140 cars judged including 356, 914, 912, 911, 924, 928, 944, 968, Boxsters, Caymans, Macans, Cayennes, and the newest Porsche, the electric Taycan . All beautiful, each in their own way . There were also 29 cars in the stunning Historic Display . For judged cars, there are five main groups -- Street, Touring, Full, Preservation, and Restoration .

on the picturesque tree-lined French Lick golf range . However due to heavy rain the preceding couple of days, the decision by Parade staff was to move it to the covered

garage . Not so inviting, and with limiting lighting, but dry . This was also the car wash and prep area .

Suncoast Region only had two Porsches judged this year . Things were extremely competitive as usual . In the Touring Class, Mark Krekorian in his 2014 red 991 Targa 4, was 5 tenths of a point from 1st in class . In the Restoration Class, Gerry Curts in his 1962 356 Coupe not only made our Region proud, but came away as the big winner: First in Class, Peoples Choice, Honorary Judges Choice, and the Gmund Award for Excellence (299 .3 points out of 300) . (See page 20 in May/June 2020 Profile for much more detail and photos .)

I apologize for the delay on the Suncoast PCA Autocross news – I missed the last deadline!

We are currently in our summer hiatus, June-September, due to the heat and high chance of thunderstorms . But I did want to provide a quick recap of a couple of great events we hosted last May .

On Sunday, May 16th, we were back at the St Petersburg College – SPC Allstate Center, after several years of the college not allowing outside driving events at the law enforcement driving pad . A new Provost for SPC Allstate and the Executive Assistant were kind enough to work with us to rent the facility to Suncoast PCA once again! The driving pad was actually larger than what I remembered attending events back in 2008-2013, and times ranged from 29 to 37 seconds . Cory Corona once again took FTD with a 29 .258 in his modified 2006 Cayman S . Suncoast PCA President, Denise Remus and husband Pat, delivered a great barbeque sandwich lunch for all participants! We look forward to hosting our October and year end December events there as well .

May Autocross at St. Petersburg CollegeArticle and Photos by Jerry & Kirsten Eggert, Suncoast PCA Competition Chair

On Saturday, May 22nd, Suncoast and Gold Coast Regions came together to host a multi-region event, combining an autocross school for novices in the morning, and an autocross challenge in the afternoon during the Suncoast DE that weekend . Steve and Dottie Kidd did an incredible job creating a fun and safe learning experience for our new students, and all 12 students, plus 26 experienced drivers, returned in the afternoon for the official autocross runs at the skid pad area . Trent Ksionek in his 2016 Carrera GTS had FTD with a very quick 41 .394 . Jerry came in next in our 2003 Boxster S with a 43 .100 .

To finish out the weekend, Jerry and I participated in the DE on Sunday, sharing our

Boxster S . It had been over 10 years since we last ran Sebring (we are almost empty nesters now, so we are looking forward to many more in the future) . After riding as student in the Cayman R, with Pat as his instructor, Jerry was hooked on the car – and yes, we are the Suncoast PCA family that acquired Denise’s track baby! We can’t wait to run it at ZoneFest and the October (SPC), November (Venice) and December (SPC) autocross events . We look forward to seeing you there and we love seeing new, first time autocrossers!! So keep your eye on suncoastpca .org and Clubregistration .net for the upcoming schedule and sign up quickly . n

On November 5th, 6th and 7th, 2021, our region will celebrate our 60-year

anniversary in PCA . The event will be held at the Saddlebrook Resort in Wesley Chapel, Florida . There is a lot more information elsewhere in this issue, please check it out, plan to attend and get registered . This year we have a new and unique Concours d’Elegance format in the effort to encourage more people to participate . The club is planning to have one, and hopefully two, Concours “How-to prepare your car for the event” schools in September . These “schools” are intended to best serve the novice member and will include a few simple and easy techniques that everyone should find useful . These schools should be fun and interesting, some neat door prizes will be given out .

This year we will have two divisions in the Concours Event, a Judged Division, and a People’s Choice Division . Both divisions will be open to all Porsche models in cluding new cars, old cars, restored cars, preserved cars, competition cars, daily drivers, etc .

The Judged Division cars will be judged based on National PCA Concours Judging standards . The Judges will be experienced national Concours d’Elegance judges and

Bronze . As an example, if total points for a perfect score represent 100%, then scores of 97 .5% wins Gold, 95% wins Silver, and 90% wins Bronze . The final breakdown will be determined by the Judges at the end of the event and trophies awarded at the event . This event will be a seriously judged event . If you choose to enter this division, your car should be prepared accordingly .

The People’s Choice Division will be based on the popular vote of everyone at the event . Rather than the conventional “winner takes all” format, we will have five voting groups with a winner selected by each group . There will be no multiple group winners . The proposed group names are: Old Bald Men, Hot Chicks, Good Looking Guys, Porsche kids, and my spouse loves their Porsche more than me . You may choose to be in any voting group you want, but you can only be in one group . There are no rules except that the entrant(s) may show their car in any configuration they believe will enhance their chance of winning . This includes everything from giving away coffee and donuts to having college Cheerleaders accompany your car . Use your imagination . Trophies awarded at the event . This event is planned to be a fun event and all entrants are encouraged to participate . n

the judging standards will be at a high level . Areas judged will include Exterior, Interior, and Storage . The engine and undercarriage will not be judged . Rather than traditional 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place class awards, trophies will be based on Level of Achievement similar to the Parade Restoration Group . There will be three levels – Gold, Silver, and

Risky Business,” the 1983 film by written and directed by Paul Brickman, has

danced its way into the history of moviedom . The film launched the career of an up-and-coming Tom Cruise, whose tighty-whitey-clad performance to Bob Seger’s “Old Time Rock & Roll” remains an iconic part of cinematic lore . The film is equal parts a lampoon of male adolescence mixed with suburban whimsy; think “Animal House” meets “The Graduate” – a romping coming-of-age story set in Chicago’s affluent North Shore neighborhood of Highland Park .

Cruise, as the film’s protagonist Joel Goodsen (good son), finds himself alone in the house while his demanding parents abscond to some far-off paradise . It’s here where the ball begins to roll, and a cascade of mischief follows the poignantly named “good son” as he motors about in his father’s Porsche 928 . The shark-nosed, bug-eyed 928 was chosen for its role in the film by Brickman himself, supplanting its rear-engined brother, the venerable 911 – a car Brickman considered “too mundane .” In Brickman’s eyes the 928 was the perfect choice for a successful Windy City businessman and the perfect car to land a teenager in a whole heap of trouble .

The 1979 Porsche 928 From “Risky Business” Heads for the Block Sept. 16-18 at Barrett-Jackson

Press Release Posted by Barrett-Jackson. Written by Eric Becker.

Offered with No Reserve at the inaugural 2021 Barrett-Jackson Houston Auction is the hero car from “Risky Business,” a 1979 Porsche 928 . Multiple 928s were used during the production of the film, but this car was the featured vehicle, and received the brunt of screen time and seat time from the cast . And before we go any further – no, this was not the car that found itself submerged in an unforgiving Lake Michigan . It is in fact one of three cars driven on set, and one of two cars used during the film’s signature chase scene that culminated in Cruise, looking straight into the camera, declaring the German carmaker’s slogan, “Porsche . There is no substitute .”

The 928 was an engineering masterpiece when it was launched in 1978 . Considered as a possible successor to the 911, the 928 was no slouch . More GT cruiser than typical

sports car, a burly 4 .5-liter V8 is nestled under the hood . The 928 produces 219 horsepower, allowing the car to hit 60 mph from a standstill in just 6 .8 seconds and reach a top speed of 143 mph . A 5-speed manual routes power to the rear wheels, and this example wears 16-inch offset 5-hole aluminum alloy wheels and features a beautiful cork on cork leather interior .

Apart from starring alongside Tom Cruise and Rebecca De Mornay, this car – VIN 9289201213 – has a unique story all its own . The 928 was the subject of the documentary, “The Quest for the RB928 (Risky Business 928),” in which filmmaker Lewis Johnsen chronicles his journey to track down this particular 928 . Oh, and there’s another thing that contributes to the provenance – it was in this car that Tom Cruise learned how to drive a stick shift .

(Ed Note: See https://www .youtube .com/watch?v=-COBUIBY16U for a brief YouTube clip . Just don’t drive as the stunt driver did in this movie . Remember, the movie set was a closed set and a qualified stunt driver did the driving . I have not been able to find a link to the documentary noted above . Where did you do your first Autocross? I think my first exposure to autocross,

or as it was called then, Gymkana, was at a Volkswagen new-car introduction . Could it have been when they introduced the first GTI in 1975? Although it may have been later than that as I just began writing that year for Hearst Newspapers . The intro was held in the San Diego area and they set up an autocross course in the expansive parking lot at what was then Jack Murphy Stadium . I don’t remember anything about the course . But, I remember watching as other auto editors took their turn before me and I studied how they handled the course guided by cones . So, when it was my turn, I didn’t wipe out any cones, although I didn’t set fast time either, not by a long shot . It was fun though .

During the following years, as a writer I had other opportunities to drive various cars, both fast and slow (think Yugo) . At some point I joined International Motor Press Association (IMPA) . One of the great benefits was the chance in the autumn to participate in “Test Day .” That was the day IMPA arranged for many importers and manufacturers to bring their new models to a race track for we scribes to flog . It was also known as “Flaunt Your Incompetence Day” for reasons that frequently became obvious . Most often, Lime Rock was the scene of the event . As a result, I not only became familiar with the track but I also had the chance to drive many different cars . I missed out on the day it was run at Bridgehampton thanks to pea-soup fog in Connecticut . Maybe a good thing, as a Porsche 930 lost it and spun backwards into a sand dune . By the time they moved it to Pocono Raceway, I had moved to Michigan .

All of this driving and writing got me invited to a few driving schools: Skip Barber was the first . Others followed, and one-day courses like that with Jackie Stewart in Merkur XR4Ti’s . He taught smooth but fast driving, unlike Hurley Haywood who almost got me car sick at The Glen at the 2006 Porsche Turbo intro . All of this eventually brought me to racing . I gave up racing small sailboats at age 59 to

race old sports cars . Why? On long windward beats I had been having trouble seeing the distant marks and didn’t always have a crew to help me . So, I vintage raced for about 12 years and loved it .

There were some tracks that had slaloms of sorts . The Inner Loop at Watkins Glen for example . That was a rhythm section or, turns 5 and 6 at Summit Point . So, when I realized my vision was worsening with depth perception being a big problem, I decided I no longer wanted to put myself or my vintage racing friends in danger . My reflexes were still very good . I think it was my last race at Roebling Road when I hit some oil at turn 4 and was able to quickly recover to prevent doing any agricultural work as others had just done . But, that was it . A year or two earlier I had taken my Turner vintage racer to a Jaguar Club Slalom as a test after a rebuild . Well that was not a “slalom” as we know it . See: https://www .jcna .com/library/slalom/course .html . It is interesting in that it

is uniform throughout JCNA . It was a good test for the Turner though .

So, what to do? It was around that time I joined PCA . I was living in Palm Harbor and Suncoast had an annual autocross at Tampa Bay Downs—not far from home . I took my 993 Targa there and did my first PCA AX . By the time we moved to Venice, I had now done a few and once our AX folks started running AX at my local Venice Airport, how could I not? I’ll be there again in November .

So, today, I’m looking at images taken by the PCA Photo Staff at Parade and bingo! One of them shows tire rubber through an autocross slalom . Very interesting! Many slaloms have cones at equal distances . But, I also know that some do not . Tricky . But assuming equal spacing, one can really get into a rhythm .

Further research for articles in Profile led me to Porsche Newsroom and their TV section . Look what I found: A Boxster Spyder recently set a new Guinness Record for the Fastest Vehicle Slalom . Enjoy the video . n

THE LAST TURN

Who Are You? Where Are You?

There are 14 Suncoast members who have not registered their email addresses in

their PCA Membership Profile, and another 69 more who have opted out of receiving emails from National PCA and Suncoast PCA. That totals almost 4 percent of our membership.

I can understand why people opt out of general email lists, but this is a club that we all joined in order to better appreciate and enjoy our Porsches. You should know that our email list is owned and controlled by PCA National and they DO NOT sell or rent it. So, by not registering your email address or by opting out of emails, you are missing a LOT of timely information. Remember, Profile only comes out every other month. And, the USPS delivery has been worse than ever, often taking a month to be delivered. Consequently, if you want the latest information on our activities, PLEASE be sure to update your records at www.pca.org.

We depend on the occasional Tuesday eNews to inform members of upcoming events in a timely manner. And, you should know that most events are not opened to registration on ClubReg until just a few weeks before they are scheduled. For example, there were two events covered in the July 6 eNews that were announced too late to be included in the “Schedule of Events” in the July/August issue of Profile. But they were in the eNews.

This is what the “Opt out” selections look like:

Opt out of Panorama magazine Opt out of all national emails - If checked, you will not receive emails

from PCA National. Opt out of regional emails

- If checked, you will not receive emails from your local PCA region.

In another information snafu, our printer recently sent me a list of 17 members whose addresses are invalid. So, on the chance that they read this online, I urge everyone to check their PCA information for accuracy. If there is an error in your mailing address, you don’t get printed copies of Profile or Panorama. These two magazines are the greatest tangible benefits of PCA membership.

I urge you review your PCA information. Go to: www.pca.org. Then go to: Membership/My PCA Account. Scroll down to: Edit My Profile. There you will find your email address, and below that, your mailing address. If you are a seasonal resident in Suncoast Region, you can now include both of your addresses, and specify the months you would like mail sent to which address.

As long-time Suncoast members know, we have often had driving tours to the Appalachian Mountains. Penny and I have been on two of them. And, with our younger grandson starting college this month at Virginia Tech in Blacksburg, Virginia, we will surely have excuses to detour from direct routes to/from there to find more fun roads on which to drive our Porsches. Needless to say, we’ll report on those roads as we sample them. We did get the opportunity to drive some roads in Connecticut a few weeks ago that reminded us of the roads in the Smoky Mountains. They have lots of twists and turns and elevation changes. How did we ever drive

those roads in the winter? I spent my last 7 or 8 years in Connecticut driving a 1966 MGB that I also vintage raced. It was great for 3 seasons, but for snow…not so much. It was too low. Great for handling, but it did not make for a good snow plow, even with snow tires instead of Hoosier Vintage TD’s. FYI: that’s what drove us to Florida. But, where are

the Connecticut-like roads down here? Bill Caldwell has done his best as Tour Meister to find some. They are few and far between. Consequently, the super-fun MGB was sold. It and the GranTurismo are the two cars I wish I still had. Both were awesome cars in their own way.

Parade brought Suncoast PCA a number of awards for various

competitive events at French Lick as noted in coverage in this issue. But, your editor also received a Third Place award in the Newsletter Contest in Class VI. This was in the class for the largest membership regions of the six classes. While Profile received the award, all of YOU who wrote articles, took photos, or submitted things for us to use, are also the winners. Congratulations to all of you.

A REMINDER: When submitting photos, please attach them, do not embed them. When they are embedded it adds so many additional steps (a combination of mouse clicks and searches through folders) to creating an issue. It is tedious and frustrating. Going forward, your consideration would be appreciated. Thank you. n
