RECOMMENDATION #1:
Complete the shift from print-centric textbook adoption practices to digital resources within
five years, beginning with the next major “textbook” adoption cycle.

• Twenty-six years ago, in 1987,…
• With the power, flexibility, engagement, and advantages of digital content and related technology…we can’t afford to wait.
Can We Get There?
RECOMMENDATION #2:
Develop a vision and roadmap for completing the shift.
SETDA Recommends
Eliminate unnecessary regulations and enact supportive policies.
Invest in infrastructure and devices to support the shift.
Ensure effective implementation of digital policies.

Overview of Project:
• Creation of 6 texts for secondary science using OER, primarily cK-12.org
• Composed by teachers from across the state in a two day workshop
• Led in partnership with Dr. David Wiley from Brigham Young University with grant support from the Hewlett Foundation

• Create a flexible resource that is cost effective and Utah specific
• Utilizing literacy strategies in alignment with ELA standards in the classroom
• Resource access beyond the classroom…
• Sets the stage to support change based on innovation in science and education

Goal of the Two Day Workshop
• Develop a statewide textbook (PDF and print copy) that is available to science teachers to specifically address the Utah Core Standards in Science.
• Maximum of 250 pages

• Selection of Standards Based Teams
• Technology Format for Creation

• Texts will be undergoing instructional materials review through state procedures

• BYU research on impact using state assessment scores

• Year Two Revisions based on pilot teachers and integration of more technology and images
• Year Three Revisions looking at Utah-based resources and connections to enhance student learning

Beyond Secondary Science
• We are looking at opportunities to expand the text offering into elementary, potentially combining with another subject area.
• We are in the process of working with Bookshare to be able to make the resources more accessible to more students
