When you or a loved one requires exceptional eldercare, where do you turn in Houston?

The Houston Jewish Geriatric Foundation (HJGF) was founded over twenty years ago to provide financial assistance to the most frail and vulnerable elderly in the community. The sole beneficiary of the HJGF is Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services.

As you may be aware, Federal and State healthcare funding has not kept pace with inflationary costs. However, our community remains deeply committed to providing compassionate and professional care, regardless of financial status. Your gift is extremely important because it offers immediate resources that are directed to the growing needs of our most frail elderly.

The HJGF Acts of Responsible Kindness (A.R.K.) Initiative was previously called the Seven Acres Annual Friends Campaign. Please help support the A.R.K. Initiative by sending in your gift today. Checks must be made out to Houston Jewish Geriatric Foundation and, for your convenience, you may use the enclosed envelope. You can also make your gift online at www.sevenacres.org by clicking on the Donate Now button on the HJGF banner. For more information call 713-778-5700.

The elderly in our community thank you for your generous support!

“DIAMONDS ARE FOREVER” 75TH ANNIVERSARY GALA HONORED DEDICATED SUPPORTERS RENEE AND ALAN HELFMAN

Seven Acres Jewish Senior Care Services held its most successful

annual Gala to date on Saturday evening, February 3. More than 900 guests were in attendance to celebrate its 75th year of excellence in eldercare. The Gala honored community leaders Renee and Alan Helfman with the Joyce Proler Schechter Spirit of Life Award for their many years of service and support of Seven Acres and the Houston community. The event, held at the Hilton Americas Houston, included a cocktail hour where guests mingled and bid on fabulous gift items at the silent and Big Board auctions. Dinner and dancing to The Richard Brown Orchestra followed as well as the award presentation.

The evening was chaired by Seven Acres Board members Sandy Rubin and Judy and Michael Feinstein. Auction chairs Michael Wiesenthal and Rhoda and Steve Saka and raffle chairs Vicky and Michael Richker put in so many hours to make the event a success. The evening’s chairs thanked the Helfman family and River Oaks Chrysler/Dodge/Ram who generously donated the Dodge Journey SUV for the raffle.

Seven Acres’ past President of the Board of Trustees Judy Yambra welcomed gala guests and made an emotional donor appeal. “These are increasingly difficult economic times for us all but we also know that a community is judged in part as to how it cares for their needy and elderly, and tonight we implore you to once again help us care for those who can no longer care for themselves ….. It is truly a mitzvah and our responsibility.

Once again, thank you all for your tremendous support, your presence this evening and your concern for all those we serve.”

Seven Acres’ annual Spirit of life Award is now named “The Joyce Proler Schechter Spirit of Life Award’ in honor of past President and devoted supporter Joyce Schechter. Mrs. Schechter was on hand to present the award to Renee and Alan Helfman.

“Renee and I feel so grateful to belong to this loving and caring community,” Alan Helfman began as they accepted the award, “Houston is our home, our village, and our extended family. It’s

Joyce Proler Schechter and Judy Yambra.

“We are astonished at this generous gift of $1 million and also the second matching $1 million gift,” remarked Ms. Yambra. “The generosity of Sue and Lester Smith is beyond our imaginations.”

the best and most generous community in the nation. We have proven, you have proven, time and time again that Houston folks take care of our town. And to me that means every single person who is in need, who is hurting, suffering, struggling to make ends meet, or praying for help to grow their educational programs or expand health services to the underserved.”

Following the presentation of the award, Alan Helfman brought his friends and community supporters Sue and Lester Smith to the podium to make a special announcement. The Smiths declared that they would donate $1 million to the event and would make a further matching gift of $1 million to Seven Acres. “We are astonished at this generous gift of $1 million and also the second matching $1 million gift,” remarked Ms. Yambra. “The generosity of Sue and Lester Smith is beyond our imaginations.”

75th Anniversary Annual Meeting Honored Judy Yambra

Seven Acres Annual Meeting included the election of new officers and an affectionate send-off for outgoing president, Judy Yambra. Michael and Vicky Richker chaired the meeting. The evening began with the Ziggy Band’s Western-style tribute to Seven Acres, sung to the tune of “The Ballad of Davy Crocket”.

Congregation Beth Yeshurun’s Rabbi Brian Strauss delivered the invocation. Speakers included Jewish Federation of Greater Houston Board President Sandy Weiner and Seven Acres past President Gary Swartz, who chaired the Board nominating committee. New officers include President, Brad Rauch; Vice Presidents, Michael Feinstein, Sandy Rubin, Jack Schaffer and David Stein; Treasurer, Lee Straus; Assistant Treasurer, Gary Greenberg; Secretary, Richard Kaplan; Assistant Secretary, Scott Jacobson; Parliamentarian, Michael Wiesenthal; and Historian, Renee Helfman. New Board members include Stuart Speer, Julie Kaplan, Stuart Miller, Annette Goldberg, Bonnie Winograd and Max Reichenthal.

Judy’s granddaughter, Layla Mueller, a recent Bat Mitzvah, made a surprise presentation of giving 10 percent of her monetary gifts to Seven Acres. “I chose Seven Acres because for the last few years I have heard my GG talk about what a great place Seven Acres is,” Layla said. “She told me what Seven Acres does and how it serves our community. She told me they care for our elderly and help people rehab after surgery. Until a few years ago, I never really knew much about it. I am glad I do now.” Layla’s great-great grandmother, Esther Friedman, lived at Seven Acres. “Seven Acres has been there for my family,” she said.

Layla’s goal was to help Seven Acres recover from the Harvey flood. “Thanks to many family and friends, I am able to donate a check in the amount of $1,000, to help Seven Acres recover.”

The program for the evening was a tribute to Ms. Yambra. The four incoming Vice Presidents held up posters spelling J-U-D-Y while reciting Judy’s attributes that matched the letters. The Ziggy Band also sang three more amusing songs of dedication to Judy.

The festivities concluded with a magnificent three-tiered 75th anniversary cake, with the new Seven Acres logo decorating it from bottom to top. Guests also were treated to a piece of Seven Acres history - copies of the program from the very first Annual Meeting from January 10, 1949. Seven Acres was then called the Home for the Aged Sons and Daughters of Israel and was located at 203 Branard Street. (please see page 20)

Slatko for organizing and hosting such an important meeting. Hurricane Harvey created emergency situations and recovery complications never before seen in Texas or anywhere else. The need for clear and consistent communication is obvious. This meeting was an important step in that process.”

On June 12, the Seven Acres Campus played host to a community wide emergency preparedness workshop for professionals from Houston area senior residences. The group of 110 participating elder care providers included a variety of nursing homes, skilled care/rehab facilities and assisted living communities. The subject of the workshop was “Emergency Preparedness and Hurricane Response in Senior Living”.

Seven Acres CEO Malcolm Slatko thanked all in attendance and explained, “We created this event today due to the changes in the Texas Gulf Coast environment, especially as our own campus was so badly flooded, that have forced us to begin the forward thinking process in terms of rebuilding, moving or somewhere in between.”

Special guests for the round table discussion were Texas State Representative Shawn Thierry, District 146; Jordan Corbitt, associate with Baker Donelson specializing in disaster recovery and FEMA regulations; Mark Smith, Life Safety Code Program manager at Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC); and Hilal Salami, Preparedness Coordinator for Special Populations of the Southeast Texas Regional Advisory Council (SETRAC). Kevin Warren, President and CEO of the Texas Healthcare Association was the moderator of the round table discussion. Leading Age Texas, an advocacy, networking, services and education association of not-for-profit eldercare providers, was represented by President and CEO George Linial and Director of Public Policy Alyse Meyer. Several officials from the Houston Fire Department were also on hand to discuss rescue erforts that took place during Harvey and also disaster planning for the future.

The workshop was held as a round table discussion that was broken up into the following topics: coordination with local emergency management, statewide and federal recommendations, and care provider community concerns moving forward.

Leading Age Texas CEO George Linial closed the session by saying, “We want to give special thanks to Seven Acres and CEO Malcolm

care. Ms. Autry has worked for twenty plus years in the healthcare industry beginning in respiratory therapy and continuing on in medical sales and marketing. She holds a Bachelors of Cardio Pulmonary Science from Midwestern State University in Wichita Falls, Texas. She also holds a certificate in Respiratory Therapy.

“I am happy to say that Seven Acres has been successful in bringing in several new long term care residents and quite a few skilled care residents over that past few months,” Ms. Autrey remarked. “We are looking to expand our programs working with residents with Parkinson’s disease and those who have suffered from strokes. Our rehabilitation room is back up and running on our first floor and we are expecting a delivery of brand new state of the art equipment any day. We are especially excited that we will be doing music therapy with our brand new treadmill! I look forward to answering any questions you might have about skilled care or long term nursing care at Seven Acres.”

Stephanie Barrocas has served as Seven Acres Assistant Director of Dining Services for the last eight years. She holds a Bachelor’s of Science in Nutrition from the University of Central Arkansas and she has worked in various locations as a licensed clinical dietician for over 20 years. Ms. Barrocas has just recently transitioned to the position of Director of Community Relations at The Medallion Jewish Assisted Living Residence where she will help new prospective residents and their loved ones make the transition to assisted living. “I am excited to have this new opportunity to join the Medallion team,” Ms. Barrocas remarked. “And I look forward to introducing seniors in the community and their families to this

amazing quality of life experience. I invite anyone thinking of joining our senior community to call me and come by to take a tour.”

“The first contact for families who are interested in Seven Acres or The Medallion will be two professionals with many years of clinical expertise in the field of geriatrics,” remarked Seven Acres Chief Operating Officer Barry Goldstein. “By coordinating this special community relations team, Seven Acres is better able to meet the needs of the elderly in our community.”

The Medallion Jewish Assisted Living Residence and Seven Acres’ rehabilitation partner, RehabCare announce their new wellness program that is staffed by a certified wellness professional. Certified Personal Fitness Trainer and Rehabilitation Exercise Specialist Althea Scott is on staff daily at The Medallion to administer the exercise program in the wellness center and coordinate the aquatic exercise program in the aquatherapy pool.

Ms. Scott’s goal is to encourage all of the Medallion residents to “get moving” by coming to the aquatherapy pool as well as using the equipment in the center. As a water aerobic instructor she is currently working with the residents in the pool two days a week for sessions of thirty minutes each. “Aquatic exercise is especially good for seniors because of its low impact nature. There are so many benefits, particularly for those who have arthritis, high blood pressure, diabetes, fibromyalgia, stroke survivors, depression and so much more,” she remarked. “We keep the water warm because it helps to soothe pain, relax muscles and increase flexibility. The sessions run for thirty minutes and I am in the pool with the residents the whole time working along with them. Our pool has a lift to ease our residents into the pool and we also have an underwater treadmill and bicycle. Aquatic exercise is an injury free sport.”

“We have one resident who has been coming to the pool twice a week and he has lost six pounds!” she continued. “Aqua therapy is excellent for improving balance, aerobic capacity and strength without putting extra stress on the body. I invite everyone to come to the pool and try it.”

Ms. Scott is also in charge of the Medallion gym. “We have several brand new pieces of equipment and are expecting to get more soon. I am planning on teaching classes in ‘wheelchair kickboxing’ where you can sit and move your upper body and legs. We will use hand weights too. As we gear up in the gym and the pool we will also start to discuss nutrition as part of our wellness program.”

Resident Ann Fastow has lived at the Medallion for nine years. Now at age 93, she says she has more energy than ever and credits the wellness program. She swims with Ms. Scott twice a week and looks forward to her water aerobic sessions. “I like it very much and I feel stronger than I have for years. I try to convince other residents to come to the pool and join in the water exercise.”

Ms. Fastow works out in the Medallion gym using the bicycle and some hand weights. She also walks around the building to add to her exercise regimen. “I really enjoy doing exercise both in the water and in the gym. Althea gives

There is always something happening at The Medallion. This spring the residents experienced a taste of Rodeo Houston with a western themed luncheon with Country and Western music provided by singer Rodney Rasberry. Purim brought a lot of young guests dressed in costume. The fifth grade students from the Shlenker School came dressed in costume bringing Mishloach Manot baskets, and the fourth grade students from YTE came to perform a short Purim play. High school students from the Torah Girls Academy arrived to present another Purim play for the residents. The residents had their own Purim party where they crowned their traditonal King and Queen.

The Medallion Library is back and better than ever. “Early last summer we began a project to overhaul our library,” remarked Jennifer Barnes, The Medallion Life Enrichment Coordinator. “We had way too many books and they were not in any particular order. The project was spearheaded by Medallion resident Winnie Isaacs who had worked as a professional librarian for many years and had the experience we needed to transform our library into one we could be proud of.” The books are now on display, alphabetized by author and in categories of interest. There is a wide selection of popular novels, biographies of famous people, large print books, Judaica, history, and some beautiful art books.

For the second year in a row, high school students from Robert M. Beren Academy are paying monthly visits to the residents at The Medallion as part of a program called “Better Together.” “Better Together” is a yearlong, nationwide program with the aim of bridging the generation gap among members of local Jewish communities. In addition, this year five students from Beren have coordinated “bucket list” programs called “Better to Lead” for several lucky residents.

Beren Academy High School Students and Residents Enjoy Intergenerational Programs

The Robert Beren Academy “Better Together” program was so successful, that ithe school is also participating in a new program called “Better to Lead”. Five students were chosen for this program out of last year’s “Better Together” group, based on their leadership skills. In this new program the students are helping to choose special “bucket list” activities that are tailored specifically to several residents’ personal interests.

The first such project was an activity designed for resident Bernard Rich and was coordinated by Beren student Adam Hoffman. Adam helped arrange for Bernard to cook some of his favorite recipes with the help of The Medallion chef Noel Tobias. Outfitted in a specially made chef’s uniform with his name embroidered on it, Bernard set out recently to cook a vegetable curry recipe.

While Bernard chopped and sautéed the vegetables, the four other students from “Better to Lead” snapped photos and filmed video of the process. “I’ve missed cooking so much,” Bernard replied. “I am grateful to the ‘Better to Lead’ program for this opportunity. I am happy to be able to do this once a month. It’s like a dream come true!”

The “Better to Lead” student team admired the finished product as Bernard Rich and Chef Noel Tobias showed off the finished dish. Left to right: Dina Kirshner, Adam Hoffman, Mr. Rich, Chef Noel, Leora Geralnik, Tali Miller and Coral Vaknin.

On a beautiful spring afternoon, the Beren Academy “Better Together” students met The Medallion residents in the Sukkah to do an art project together. The students and their resident “buddies” glued different colors of sand to make gorgeous sand art paintings. Left to right: Doris Perlberg with Jeremy Morgan, Shirley Shoifet with Tali Miller, Annie Gutman with Dan Melnik.

Resident Ben Patel also participated in the “Better to Lead” program. The Beren students re-published his book of original poetry adding illustrations of each poem. Each i l lustration began as an original piece of art , seen at left with Ben, created by Beren students in every grade.

Residents Celebrated a Festive Passover at Seven Acres and The Medallion

Passover preparations on the Seven Acres campus take place on a very large scale. On the morning of the seder, a group of industrious residents chopped and mixed the charoset and placed salt water, maror, and sprigs of parsley into small cups to be set out on the tables for that evening. The seder preparation took place at The Medallion where family member Tammi Altshuler was on hand to help prepare the symbols with Medallion residents Bernard Rich, Shirley Cooper, Arnold Rosenzweig, Maria Leon, Shirley Shoifet, Phoebe Brown, and Penny Bailey. Joining them were Seven Acres residents Rose Hurwitz, Judy Bogos, Gerald Feiner, and Marian Vegder.

At the first seder, the Seven Acres auditorium was full to capacity with 80 residents and their guests. A dedicated committee of residents and other volunteers were seated at a special head table and led the complete seder service. Leaders were residents Bob Altshuler, William Shlensky and Gerald Feiner. Also on hand were Chair of the Religious Committee Bobby Livitz and his wife, Sharon, CEO Malcolm Slatko and his wife Leslie, volunteers Ann and Al Abramczyk and Roz Wachter. Bob Altshuler was joined by his wife Tammi and daughter Lanie. Mr. Shlensky read a special reading from his past family seders. Seven Acres also held a second smaller seder service on Tuesday evening.

At The Medallion, approximately sixty residents and family members enjoyed both of the Passover seders in the dining room. The first night seder was led by volunteers Sandy and Barry Halpern who have led this service for the past twelve years beginning in 2006 when the senior community first opened its doors. Sandy’s late mother, Toby Orenstein, was a charter member resident of The Medallion. The second night was led by Medallion resident Rabbi Bernard Rich.

“I want to communicate to all of you, how wonderful the Passover Seders were both at Seven Acres and The Medallion,” remarked Seven Acres CEO Malcolm Slatko. “I cannot begin to tell you how many wonderful accolades we received and how important and meaningful it was to our residents to be able to celebrate this important holiday together with their families.

Residents, staff and volunteers of Seven Acres gathered at the head table at the first night seder, left to right: seated:, William Shlensky, Lanie Altshuler, Bob Altshuler, Tammi Altshuler, Sharon Stoper Livitz, and Bobby Livitz. Standing: Barry Goldstein, Leslie Slatko. Malcolm Slatko. Ann Abramczyk, Gerald Feiner and Al Abramczyk.

Each aspect of the Seder nights was superb, from the food, to the beautiful décor to the Seder program led by our residents and chair of our religious committee Bobby Livitz. Seeing our residents dressed so beautifully was very special. Without question it was one of the best Seders ever!”

For the past several years, a group of high school students, working under the auspices of the Houston Kashruth Association (HKA), have worked to clean all of the facility’s kitchens. Long-time supporter of the Home, Bruce Stein, and his family hosted their annual party on Sunday, March 25th to deliver Valentine wishes to the residents of Seven Acres, The Medallion and their guests. The event was billed as the Annual Valentine Concert (A “Bissel” Late). The Stein family was represented by Bruce Stein, his sons David and Brad Stein and Brad’s wife Robin. Seven Acres Board members Sandy Rubin, Stephanie Loeser, Lorraine Horwitz and President Judy Yambra were also on hand to join in the fun.

This was the first major event planned to take place in the Seven Acres auditorium since it flooded due to Tropical Storm Harvey. The party included a concert by the ever popular Gulf Coast Concert Band, cake, and ice cream sundaes. Each resident received a special Valentine stuffed animal as a gift from the Stein family. “We had an incredible crowd and everyone was ready to party,” remarked host Bruce Stein. “It was so much fun and we all clapped hands and laughed and were thankful for all our blessings. The band was incredible and played everyone’s favorite music and the food was great. Everyone enjoyed the party favors which made everyone smile. This was the first party since Harvey and WE SURE DID PARTY! The Stein family was so grateful that everyone had a good time and we told them that we

would be back again next year if they would. All in all it was a ‘bissel’ late Valentine party.”

The Gulf Coast Concert Band played to a standing room only crowd, possibly the largest in recent Seven Acres history. They opened with “Happy Days are Here Again” as Bruce Stein danced into the room to say hello to everyone. Other highlights of the band’s performance were medleys from performers like Stevie Wonder, Frank Sinatra, a “Sound of Music” medley and a Dixieland medley. They also played more pop standards like “Sweet Caroline,” “Copacabana,” and “In the Mood”.

Resident Rose Hurwitz enjoyed the party.

The Board, Residents, Staff, and Volunteers wish to thank the Jewish Federation of Greater Houston for their enormous financial support

given to Seven Acres after the Harvey Storm.

Representatives of Jewish Federations from all over the country flew in to Houston in the weeks following the storm to tour the Jewish agencies and synagogues in order to carry the message back to their communities about the needs of those that flooded.

“These have been very difficult times for those people in the community who have been displaced,” Seven Acres CEO Malcolm Slatko remarked as he explained why Seven Acres wishes to open this year’s High Holiday services to the whole community. “So many of our buildings in the Jewish community were damaged by the flood and are still under renovation that we want to take this opportunity to welcome everyone to join our residents here as we celebrate the holidays.”

The Seven Acres Campus offers two locations for holiday services. Traditional services are offered in the Seven Acres chapel that will be led by Rabbi Avigail Young and Seven Acres chair of the Religious Committee Bobby Livitz. At The Medallion, Reform Jewish services will be led by longtime volunteer Roy Cohn with cantorial soloist Dr. Isabelle Ganz

who will be assisted by accompanist Keith Ross.

Rabbi Young is a familiar face on the campus as she has led Shabbat services and holiday festivals at both Seven Acres and The Medallion. Well known in the Houston Jewish community, Dr. Ganz has performed as a cantorial soloist for many years at local synagogues as well as several overseas. Mr. Ross has served as accompanist for High Holiday services at The Medallion and at Congregation Beth Israel in the past.

“We are delighted to announce that Dr. Isabelle Ganz will join us for the Medallion reform services and Rabbi Avigail Young for the traditional services in the Seven Acres chapel,” remarked Sue Cororve, Director of Recreation and Volunteer Services. “Our services are free of charge and open to the community. Please call 713-778-5719 for more information.”

FACTS FROM THE SEVEN ACRES ARCHIVES

In honor of Seven Acres 75th Anniversary we would like to share some interesting facts with you about the early days of the Home for the Aged Sons and Daughters of Israel. Although the Home opened in 1943, the First Annual Report was not published until January 1949. Here are some of the more fascinating pages from that report. Notice that the average annual cost of care per guest (resident) was just $1,828.54 in 1948 and the average cost of food daily was just a little more than one dollar!
