SECURITY UPDATE by Steve Anton

7 ways to keep kids safer this summer

1. Since there is no homework, use the evenings to talk about stranger danger and the potential hazards of younger children playing with much older kids. Teach them how to behave when a solicitor is at the door and how to respond to strangers on the phone. See: http://www.ncpc.org/topics/violent-crime-and-personal-safety/strangers

2. Develop a family action plan that discusses flooding, home invasions, escaping a fire, what to do if you get locked out, and how to reunite if you get separated. Establish code words. Be sure everyone knows how and when — and when not — to call 911.

3. Pay special attention to pool safety. Alarms and barriers are im-portant, but nothing keeps a child safer than learning to swim. If you own a pool, check the latest laws regarding self-closing and self-latching gates, fence design and preventing unwanted access. Report safety hazards at public pools.

4. Discuss the boundaries of where your child may and may not go. Ditches and bayous look like fun places to play, but they are dan-gerous. And more critically, vagrants often hide under the bridges.

5. Caution your child while playing in the front yard not to approach any vehicle, occupied or not, and how to respond if approached by an adult outdoors.

6. Internet safety is always critical. Use summertime to create better boundaries for internet use. Watchdog software will keep children accountable and let you follow them on-line.

7. Kids love to explore, and that includes their own home. Double check that all medicines, poisons and guns are out of their reach.

The key to the safety of your home and family is in your mailbox Your annual membership statement is in the mail, and it represents your partnership in keeping Braeswood Place among the safest neigh-borhoods anywhere in Harris County. With your support, we employ five deputies who provide 24/7 coverage. Their daily patrols, vacation watches and quick response to calls for help provide an extraordinari-ly low crime rate, few burglaries, and virtually no violent crimes.

By now you should have

received your annual dues

invoice for BPHA and the

Constable Patrol.

Please return it immediately with

your payment.

USDA MAY KNOCK ON YOUR DOOR AND IT IS LEGITIMATE! by Linda Barcot

The BPHA office has received numerous calls from our neighbors concerning people knocking on their door and asking if they have citrus trees. This is the USDA and it is a legitimate issue. A grapefruit tree on the bay-ou near Glen Arbor was found to have the highly contagious canker disease. The disease is spread through the air and water. It is thought that the recent flooding of Brays Bayou might have infected the citrus tree. If you have citrus trees, please use the links below and if you have any questions, please contact the Houston Plant In-spection Station at 281-982-9555. With the recent scams that often hit our neighborhood, we wanted to let you know that these efforts are valid. Further information on this subject can be found at these links: http://www.braeswoodplace.org/email_attachment.asp?attachmentId=117577 and http://edis.ifas.ufl.edu/pp116.

HUCKLEBERRY PARK by Karen Stopnicki

HISD will begin work on the field of the park to remove old building material that is beginning to surface. Then the park team will come in behind them with Phase 1 to address the drainage, complete the grading, and install the infrastructure needed to secure the field. Timing on both pieces is still being finalized. Planned for the Fall is a Boosterthon Fun Run scheduled for September 9, 2016 for Mark Twain students to raise funds for Phase 2. Half of our planned trees and benches have been sponsored already, as well as a number of pavers. We would like to thank the following neighbors for super-size donations. $500-$999: Whitney Anderson, Victor Barcot/Deutsche Bank, Peggy Christman, Amy Cooper/Lanco Land & Timber, Tiffany Hawkins, John & Nazanin Hopkins, Jenny & Brent Hyman, Laura Juliano, Julie Lang, Tom & Dawna Menges, Robert Muraro, Giao Nguyen, Scott & Amalie Rosenfeld, Katherine Schwartz, Connie Tuthill, GE Foundation, and Rita Cammarata, DDS, PA. $1,000-$5,000: Philip and Deepa Alapat, Amy & Klay Allen, Kairy-tate Barkley/French Cuff Boutique, Linda Castaneda, Daniel DeWalch/Spine & Sports Therapy, Tom Friedman, Daniel Fu & Irene Chang, Joshua Jacobs, Tina Lee, Lynne Lorenz/Budget Blinds of Houston Inner Loop, Paul Miller/Union Kitchen, Laura Perl-man/Bernstein Realty, Monica Ryan/Village Plumbing, Vincent Ryan, Jr., Judy Siverson, Joyce Soliman, Joan Patterson White, and Sieler Family Fund. Every dollar helps! Get a yard sign for a donation of $100. Visit huckleberrypark.org to make a gift today or learn more. Please contact [email protected] for more information.

ALL DOGS SHOULD BE ON LEASH AT ALL TIMES WHEN OUTSIDE! A recently reported unfortunate incident has been brought to our attention. A dog was running with his owner and was off leash on Kilmarnock. This dog attacked a smaller dog that was leashed and walking with his owner. The smaller dog required medical attention. This is not the first time this has happened so we must remind dog owners to ALWAYS LEASH YOUR DOG whether you are walking, riding or running.

BRAYS BAYOU ASSOCIATION

By Billy Pilgrim

Reminders: As reported in the June issue of the Sentinel, there are two meetings of the Brays Bayou Association in July and August which are very important to Braeswood Place homeowners. BPHA homeowners are encouraged to attend these meetings if possible. See the June issue for dates and program presenters. Meetings begin at 7 pm at the Gathering Place, 5310 South Willow. The segment of Project Brays from Bertner in the Texas Medical Center to the Bevlyn/Timberside outfall begins on the south bank of the channel at Greenbriar west to Buffalo Speedway (phase 1) on July 5. The segment consists of six phases and is scheduled to complete in the 3rd quarter of 2017. Total excavation of all 6 phases will be about 300,000 cubic yards of fill or about 43,000 dump truck loads. The Poor Farm Ditch Increase in Capacity project is in the preliminary planning/data gathering stage. HCFCD has set no timeline for this project. During the flooding of the past several weeks, Channel 13 showed some devices that property owners were using to prevent flooding of their residences. Some of these same devices have been shown in the past on Channel 11. Google www.quickdams.com to see what they are and how they work. You can also go to the Channel 11 and 13 websites and view the stories. I had an opportunity following the June 6 John Culberson meeting at Pershing to talk to two gentlemen that own and use the “flood gate” which prevented their residences from flooding while some of their neighbors had water enter their homes. They supplemented the flood gates by plugging the weep holes in the brickwork with pipe insulation and caulking them. Granted, the flood gates are not cheap but neither is recovering from a flood.

LONGFELLOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL by Jessica Evans

Longfellow students and kids from the community have been having a great time at Science and Musical theater camps this summer! The musical theater campers perform the original production Cinderella Superhero on Fri-day June 18. Congrats to Longfellow's teacher of the year, Mr. Scott Berry. Mr. Berry teaches art, coaches Od-yssey of the Mind and sponsors Longfellow's chess club. In addition, Mr. Berry is a talented artist in his own right. Congrats to 5th grade student Allen Rainey for winning this year's Amelia Mitchell award, which honors a student who embodies selflessness, service and leadership. Congrats to 4th grader Peter R. who set a school record for the most AR points ever earned by a Longfellow student with 784 points! Other AR All Stars are 2nd graders: Jackson H, Natalia R, Julia E, Christian G, and Te'Varis M; 3rd graders: Josephine M, Callista S, Leo J, Ella E, Nicholas D, Annabelle S, and Aidan S-G; 4th graders: Jesse H, Sean O, Annette F, Sofia O, Broderick D, Janiya T, Dontey B, and Laila S; 5th graders: Madison H, Sho F, Susan A, Nadra-Claire A, Leen A, Maverick E and Ryan S. Longfellow will donate the funds to the Greater Houston Flood Recovery Fund to help people in Harris, Montgomery, and Ft. Bend counties affected by the re-cent April 18th Houston-area floods. Hope everyone is having a safe and fun summer!

ROAD TRIPPING WITH YOUR PET From ASPCA website

Traveling with a pet by car involves more than just loading the animal in the back seat and motoring off, espe-cially if you will be driving long distances or plan to be away for a long time. Here are a few car travel safety tips to help you prepare for a smooth and safe trip: Prep your pet for a long trip. Get your pet geared up by taking him on a series of short drives first, gradual-

ly lengthening time spent in the car. If you’re traveling across state lines, bring along your pet's rabies vac-cination record. While this generally isn't a problem, some states require this proof at certain interstate crossings.

Keep your pets safe and secure in a well-ventilated crate or carrier. The crate should be large enough for your pet to stand, sit, lie down and turn around in. Secure your pet’s crate so it will not slide or shift in the event of an abrupt stop. If you decide to forgo the crate, don't allow your pet to ride with his head outside the window, and always keep him in the back seat in a harness attached to a seat buckle.

Prep a pet-friendly travel kit. Bring food, a bowl, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies,

medication and first-aid, and any travel documents. Pack a favorite toy or pillow to give your pet a sense of familiarity. Be sure to pack plenty of water, and avoid feeding your pet in a moving vehicle. Your pet's travel-feeding schedule should start with a light meal three to four hours prior to departure, and always opt for bottled water. Drinking water from an area he or she isn’t used to could result in stomach discomfort.

Never leave your animal alone in a parked vehicle. On a hot day, even with the windows open, a parked automobile can become a furnace in no time, and heatstroke can develop. In cold weather, a car can act as a refrigerator, holding in the cold and causing the animal to freeze to death.

CITY OF HOUSTON IS OFFERING ZIKA INSECT PROTECTION

Ortho® has donated 10 pallets of Ortho Bug B Gon® to help the City of Houston with its Zika abatement program. The donation is roughly equal to 3600 bottles of product. Bug B Gon® is an outdoor insect killer for use on lawns and gardens. It is not an insect repellant for use on individuals. The Bug B Gon® will be available to residents for free at the Kingwood Community Center and all Houston Health Department Multi-Service Centers during regular operating hours. A list of the multi-service centers is available here: http://www.houstontx.gov/health/MSC/index.html. The product will be given away on a first-come, first-served basis. Mayor Turner is hoping for funding from the state of Texas to help cover the increased costs the City is incurring. Residents need to do their part, too. Follow the three D’s of mosquito defense: DRAIN, DRESS, DEET! Drain standing water on your property and keep hedges trimmed. Dress in long pants and long sleeves, keep windows and screens repaired and use air conditioning. When outside, spray exposed skin with mosquito repellant containing DEET and reapply as necessary and use netting to protect babies in strollers or car seats. More information about Zika is available at: http://www.houstontx.gov/health/Epidemiology/HHD_Fact_Sheet.pdf

DO YOU HAVE A SPRINKLER

SYSTEM? Below is from an observant and concerned

neighbor: “The amount of water wasted in our neighborhood by sprinkler systems is tragic. Having lived overseas many years, I well know how dear water is, particularly when you don't have it. The United States will be in the same situation in the not-too-distant future if we do not conserve. Primarily, I am speaking about when we have a downpour one day, maybe an inch or more, and the next morning, I see sprinklers going off all over. When there is a good rain, go to the garage and turn off the system, then turn it on maybe two days later. Some sprinklers are going off every day and hundreds of gallons are just rushing, and wasting, into the storm drains.”

Note: Additionally, make sure the sensor button on your control box is on Active, not Bypass!

THE IDEA BANK FORCUSTOM HOMES.

The Build on Your Lot team at PARTNERS IN BUILDING is like

the Idea Bank for custom homes. As the largest custom home builder

in Texas, we’ve built luxury homes since 1986 on every kind of home

site. We’re always learning from our customers, too, as we work with

them to design their one-of-a-kind home from scratch. Our Build

on Your Lot team has learned there is more to building a custom

home than just a floor plan and a home site. It’s a process, and we are

experts in delivering the things you want most in your home, on time

and on budget. When we’re finished, there won’t be another home

like yours. That’s something you can take to the bank.

From the first meeting to the handing over of the keys, Partners in Building was there whenever we needed them and built a house that will last a lifetime. We have told many of our friends, “Why would you build a house with anyone else?” – Charlie and Carol

Page 18: Sentinel - Braeswood PlaceSentinel July 2016 by James P. Baker President’s Message Braeswood Place Homeowners Association A Deed-Restricted Community 4010 Blue Bonnet Suite 112 Houston,

You never know what life’s going to throw at you. Recently a friend and client of mine hired a maid. Unfortunately, the maid slipped on the stairs while vacuuming, fell and broke her leg. Thank goodness it wasn’t worse. My client, of course, felt terrible about the accident. But it got me to thinking about workers’ compensation and an issue many people are not aware of when hiring household staff.

While homeowners insurance will cover some medical bills if a person is injured in your home, employed or otherwise, it is often not enough to cover more serious injuries. When do you need to go beyond and carry workers’ comp for domestic workers?

Here’s the key. You need to know if the domestic worker is your employee or an “independent contractor” whose services you pay for. If your maid, for instance, furnishes her own supplies (detergent, mop, etc.), she’s probably an independent contractor. The same goes if she works for a service that furnishes her supplies. In these cases, the maid is a service you are paying for. Workers’ comp is not necessary on your end.

On the other hand, a maid (or other domestic help) would likely be considered your employee if:You provide the suppliesYou pay a salary They work for you full timeThey live with you

In cases such as these, you need to provide workers comp. Think of it as a safety net for you as well as your staff. The details of each situation can vary, so be sure to discuss the issue with your insurance agent or trusted personal advisor.
