What is a clause?
A clause is a group of words that has a subject and a verb.
2 types of clauses:
Independent (main clause): subject and verb; can stand alone.
Dependent (subordinate clause): subject and verb; cannot stand alone. Starts with subordinating conjunction.
2 Types of Dependent Clauses
Adjective clauses (describe a noun/pronoun) start with: that, which, who, whom, whose
Adverb clauses (describe verb, adjective, or adverb) start with: song words! (after, although, as…)

Sentence Types
Simple: one independent clause
Compound: two or more independent clauses
Joined by comma+FANBOYS or a semi-colon (;)
FANBOYS: for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so
Complex: one independent clause+ at least one dependent clause
Compound-complex: two or more independent clauses + at least one dependent clause
Sentence Formulas
Simple: I
Compound: I + I (joined with ,FANBOYS or ;)
Complex: I + D (has a sub. conjunction)
Compound-complex: I + I + D (has a sub. conjunction)
