Intended Use

Basis of the equipment design The sensor tester is constructed according to the latest standards in technology and the recognized safety rules. However, improper use may cause hazards to life and health of the user or other persons as well as damage the device and other equipment during use.

Inadmissable use Use of the instrument is not allowed under the following conditions: • If the operating instructions have not been read or not been observed. • If the installation has not been done according to the manual. • If the instrument is obviously damaged or malfunctioning • If the environmental conditions don’t allow safe use. • If a malfunction of the instrument could cause hazard to life and health of the user or third

persons. Any damages which are caused by inadmissible use or false handling oft he device are not covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. The risk is borne solely by the user.

Authorized use The instrument is solely made for testing of piezoelectric accelerometers designed to work according to the IEPE principle (Integrated Electronics Piezo Electric), which have to be supplied by a constant current. The sensor has to be connected to the tester correctly and according to the sensor’s specification. The tests may vary according to the specific sensor type. The test results will be shown on the tester’s display. Experience shows that measuring the bias voltage gives meaningful information about the functional capability of the sensor. If the bias voltage is within the tolerance range, the internal charge converter is functional. In the measurement mode, the device performs the measurement of vibration velocity in mm / s RMS. The sensor tester is not a stand-alone calibrator, as for measuring the sensor’s sensitivity it would have to be exposed to a defined and known vibration. However, comparing vibration measurement results taken with the test sensor and with another sensor, which has a known sensitivity, may allow to define the test sensor’s sensitivity.

The connection clamps are short circuit protected against each other. But you should be careful not to produce any shorts, as this would lead to false results of the test.

Connection of a sensor with 1 wire cable and metal housing E.g. IBIS Types AI10.011.xxx, AI100.011.xxx

This sensor type uses the cable shield for the ground connection. Therefore the black clamp (brown wire) hast to be connected to the shield. The grey crocodile clamp is to be left unconnected. The white clamp connects to the white sensor wire and the blue crocodile clamp to the sensor housing.

Test Procedure Connect the sensor as described above. Select the sensor type if required. After pressing the button the test procedure runs automatically. Tests against short circuits between the wires, shield and the sensor housing are run first. Afterwards the tester supplies a 4 mA constant current to the sensor and measures the bias voltage across the signal and ground connections. Any faults discovered during the test are shown in the display.

Turn on the Tester For power supply use the AC adapter supplied with the tester or any other 24 Volts DC source. After powering up the start screen appears:

- For changing the language press Menü. - For going to the sensor test mode press next - After about 10 seconds the tester goes to next automatically.

Changing the language If you selected Menu from the start screen, the language selection appears:

Press ändern for changing to English or French.

When the desired language is shown press OK. The selected language will be stored and activated automatically at the next power up.

Run a Test Preparation: Power up the tester. After the initialization, the following screen appears:

The tester is now ready for testing sensors with a (IEPE) constant current supply of 4 mA. The nominal sensitivity of the sensor is not important.

If you would like to test a sensor with integrated PT 100 or PT 1000 temperature sensing element, first press Mode and select the appropriate sensor type .

Automatic Test

1. Connect the sensor as described on page 5 and following. 2. If appropriate, select the sensor type using Mode 3. Press the Start Button 4. The test result will be shown like following:

5. After you have removed the sensor connection, the start check message appears again.

6. If you have more sensors to test, connect the next one and press Start again. In the case of any fault messages, please first check the connection of the sensor.

Faults detectable In the automatic test, the tester is able to detect the following faults: • Short circuit between signal and ground wires • Short circuit between signal and shield • Short circuit between signal and housing • Short circuit between ground wire and Shield *2 • Short circuit between ground wire and housing *2 • Short circuit between shield and housing *2 • Broken connection in the sensor signal and sensor ground loop • Bias voltage out of tolerance window (9 to 13 Volt) • Resistance of temperature sensor (if existing) *2) Some non IBIS sensors have the sensor shield or ground connected to sensor housing. In these cases refer to the sensor specification sheet for advices how to avoid ground loops. If there is more than one fault, the number of detected faults is shown, and the fault descriptions alternately in line 3 of the display.

Example for fault messages:

Abbreviations in fault messages Display Meaning V+ Signal connector of accelerometer V- Ground connector of accelerometer PT100+ Signal connector of temperature sensors PT100- Ground connector of temperature sensors

Undetectable faults The sensor tester alone cannot detect deviations of the sensitivity. For this purpose it would be necessary to apply a defined vibration to the sensor and then to evaluate the measurement result of the vibration.. However, comparing vibration measurement results taken with the test sensor and with another sensor, which has a known sensitivity, may allow to define the test sensor’s sensitivity. Please be aware that the measurement point must be the same to achieve camparable readings. The sensor type AI100.020TR.PT100 with integrated temperature sensor PT 100 has separate ground wires for the acceleration and temperature sensing elements. An internal short circuit between shield and one of the both ground wires cannot be differentiated. In both cases the fault message will be „Short Shield – V-. If there is a short circuit between the signal wire of the accelerometer (V+) and the signal wire of the temperature sensor (PT100+), the fault message will be „Short V+ - V-.

Mesurement Mode In the measurement mode, the connected acceleration sensor is used to take vibration velocity readings in [mm/s RMS]. When the sensor is mounted on a source of known vibration, such as a vibration calibrator, the sensor’s sensitivity can be evaluated. The measurement mode is calibrated or sensors with a nominal sensitivity of 100 mV/g or 10 mV/g. Press Mode to swithch to the measurement mode.

Vibration 100 mV/g tells the intended sensitivity of the connected sensor. If you want to use a sensor with 10 mV/g sensitivity, press Mode again.

Select the measurement range by pressing Range.

Selecting the Measurement Range Select the measurement range by pressing Range. Choose a range according to the expected max values, depending on the measurement object.
