Magnetic Scales
» Due to many years of experience in the production of magnetic encoder pole rings and linear scales, we are optimally networked in the industry. We have access
to a large pool of magnetic shapes, materials and manufacturing processes.Tooling costs are saved and ideas are implemented more quickly.
Harry Knöller, Product Manager Magnetics
Many years of experience in the design of magnetic circuits and our high flexibility as a medium-sized company
are a good basis for a successful partnership.
Sensitec advises and supports its customers in the selection of the most suitable magnetic components — from the sensor to the magnet.
Know-how.
As a manufacturer of magnetic sensors for length and angle measurement, we have also been involved in the development and production of magnetic scales for more than 20 years.
During this time, an effective machine park was built up, which recently has been extended by a laser precision linear coding system. The machines are operated in air-conditioned environment. A detailed measurement report is created for each product.
The coding is done according to a process patented by us. It enables us to equip almost all magnetically suitable materials with a precise magnetic structure and high field strength.
The Sensitec Magnetics team consists of long-time employees from production and development. Their practical experience is ideally complemented by our physicists in the fundamental research department. First, the complex requirements are simulated by our modern simulation software and then optimized and implemented on the machines.

Competence.
Our magnetization systems are equipped with high-precision reference measuring systems which provide highest accuracy during the magnetization process as well as during the subsequent measu-rement. The magnetization systems are designed for series production and cost-effective production. Nevertheless, the concept allows a highly flexible untilization for samples and small volumes as well.
As a manufacturer of magnetic sensors and supplier of of complete sensor solutions, the know-how concerning magnetization is one of our core competences. In addition to high-precision magnetizing facilities for pole rings and line-ar scales we apply simulation tools to ensure the optimized design of measurement scales. This enables us to evaluate parameters like magnetic material, air gap and assembly tolerances and to select the ideal scale for your application. The chip characteristics of our MR sensors are reflected in this calculation to achieve a maximum performance for the complete system.
Magnetisationfor Angle, Length andPosition Measurement.A precisely magnetized measurement scale or pole ring is an essential part of a perfect measurement system. Beside the MR sensor, the active measurement scale is the most important component for the highly precise and robust angle, length and position measurement.
Magnetization of pole rings and scales at Sensitec
• On our own magnetization systems
• According to a patented process
• Adapted to the performance requirements of the customer
• Using special simulation programs for an optimized geometry and reliable measurement results
We use special tools to provide you with application- and requirement-optimized pole rings. Depending on the given geometry and the metrological requirements, the optimum pole ring parameters are determined as a function of the diameter, the number of poles and the required sensor distance.
Linear Scales. Two different material variants are used for active linear measurement scales:
Hard ferrite linear scales with high remanence for higher precision and elastomer scales on steel tape. These are very robust and are also suitable for larger lengths.
On both types different pole pitches with alternating north and south poles as well as reference tracks can be magnetized.
For a magnetization with only an incremental track the magnetization width equals the width of the scale. The scale length is very freely selectable for the elastomer scales. Due to their material properties hard ferrite scales are more suitable for short lengths - please ask for details if you have special requirements.

In addition to angle measurement with a pole ring, there is also the method of placing a dipole magnet directly on the motor shaft. The sensor is placed axially opposite on face of the magnet. Due to the special type of dipole magnetization, the field lines are concentrated on the side where the sensor is located. Depending on the type of sensor used, the angle of rotation can be measured as an absolute value of 0 - 180° or 0 - 360°.

Basically, we distinguish between five ring types:
• Injected, plastic-bonded pole rings
• Sintered hard ferrite pole rings
• Pressed hard ferrite pole rings
• Elastomer tape vulcanized on steel ring
• Elastomer tape glued to steel ring
The pole rings are magnetized at the circumference (radially) or axially with alternating north and south poles. Multitrack magnetizations, required for an additional reference or code track are also possible.
We advise you on the selection of the suitable pole ring design.
Sensitec offers a wide variety of standard pole rings. Due to our many years of experience with these products we have the opportunity to access a large pool of ring variants.
