Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing Vacancies

Expressions of interest are now being sought for the 2019-2021 Ministerial Advisory Council on Ageing (the Council)

The Council provides a link between the Minister for Seniors and Veterans and older people in the ACT. The Council assists the Government in developing and implementing positive ageing policies, to advance the status and interests of older people in our community.

We are keen to receive expressions of interest from people who have a demonstrated commitment to the advancement of older people and who have a particular interest in creating an age-friendly city and countering elder abuse.

The Council seeks representation from people with diverse backgrounds, experiences and abilities to apply and become a voice for older people in Canberra.

ACT Seniors Week, held from the 18th to the 24th of March, is Canberra's celebration of our older community! Designed to inspire, inform and connect - ACT Seniors Week is filled with a range of events for Canberrans of all ages including the Chief Minister’s Concert and Seniors Week Expo.

Seniors Week - Chief Ministers ConcertThe Chief Ministers concert is a performance put on for seniors by the Royal Military College Band. The band will play a collection on old and new songs and is sure to be a wonderful celebration in Seniors Week.

Seniors Week – Free Travel for Seniors The ACT Government is providing free travel on Transport Canberra services for Seniors Card holders during Seniors Week, from Monday 18 to Sunday 24 March 2019.

Patrons can either tap on and tap off with their ACT or Interstate Seniors MyWay Card or show the driver their Seniors Card and the journey will be free for the week, any time of the day or night.

On Thursday 21 March, Transport Canberra will be providing free bus charters to and from Exhibition Park in Canberra (EPIC) for the Seniors Week Expo. The bus charters will travel to and from select major bus stations, including Westfield Belconnen, Belconnen Community, Tuggeranong, Woden, and the City.

Use the online TC Journey Planner for details on timetables throughout the week and to help plan out your trip. Transport Canberra provides more bus and light rail services more often, 7-days a week. The new network is designed to make it easier to get around walk and cycle paths while supporting Canberrans with a reliable, safe and efficient integrated transport network. Veterans Grants Program

2018-19 2nd Round of Veterans Grants Program is now open!

The primary aim of the Veterans Grants Program is to support veterans and their family’s wellbeing and social inclusion. To best meet the needs of the veteran community, a focus on ageing veterans, contemporary veterans and veterans’ families might be considered collectively or separately as the focus of the grant application.

Applications are sought for innovative projects that promote veterans as valued members of the ACT community and enable them to participate in community activities.

A maximum of $2,000.00 is available per grant.

Sanctuary Aus' Women's Group returns this Thursday night, 7 till 8.30pm.  Come along and join in this comfortable, relaxed and friendly women's group.  Meet some new friends and have a laugh.  The group generally takes on some form of art/craft, with the focus on self-discovery rather than artistic talent.

Sanctuary Aus would also like to announce the first group in our partnership with Bunnings Belconnen - Women's Social DIY group on the first Wednesday of every month, starting on Wednesday 6 March 2019 - 10.30 till 11.30am.  We're going to learn how to:

• install a deadlock and window lock;• best save on heating and cooling;• repair holes in walls;• grow vegetables;• set up irrigation;• deter garden pests;• use professional power tools;• build an outdoor storage bench-seat.

Social Inclusion Through WoodcraftThe ACT Woodcraft Guild is an incorporated membership-based organisation with a number of objectives, including to promote, foster and encourage an appreciation of, and interest in, woodcraft within the general community. The Guild has extensive and fully equipped workshop facilities in Kambah (www.woodcraftguild.org.au), and caters for all levels and interests in woodcraft, from complete novice to proficient.

As part of its objectives, the Guild can now offer several free memberships (normally $110) to seniors who are experiencing social isolation or are at risk of social isolation.

If you know anyone over the age of 60, living alone or new to the ACT, or is experiencing isolation or at risk of isolation for any reason, who has an interest in woodcraft, can arrange travel to Kambah and who would benefit from a free membership, please contact [email protected] for more information.

Seniors Social ClubCarers ACT has set up a new "Wise and Well' seniors social club for carers and non-carers alike (for 65+)!

Meet great people, have nice meals, learn new skills and enjoy great experiences at the group activities and excursions.

Activities include:

Two sessions held every Thursday: mornings (10am-12pm) and afternoons (1pm-3pm). Come to one or both! $5 per session (lunches and excursions a bit more).

Training and Education

Lifeline Mental Health First Aid Training

This two-day course teaches adults how to assist other adults who are experiencing a mental health crisis or developing a mental health problem. Courses run from 9am - 4.30pm each day.

It discusses mental health issues such as depression, anxiety disorders, psychosis and substance use disorders as well as some of the potential crises that may arise including suicidal ideation, panic attacks, severe psychotic states and intoxication.

Learning outcomes

Mental Health First Aid course teaches people (18 years and over) how to offer initial support to adults who are developing a mental health problem, experiencing a worsening of an existing mental health problem or in a mental health crisis, until appropriate professional help is received, or the crisis resolves. The course curriculum is evidence-based.

Course participants learn about the signs and symptoms of the common and disabling mental health problems, how to provide initial help, where and how to get professional help, what sort of help has been shown by research to be effective, and how to provide first aid in a crisis situation.

Lifeline Canberra Mental Health First Aid for the Suicidal PersonThis four-hour (4hr) Mental Health First Aid for the Suicidal Person course is for any interested adult who wants to learn the skills and acquire the knowledge required to safely have a conversation with a suicidal person.

Evaluations consistently show that MHFA training is associated with improved knowledge of mental illnesses, their treatments and appropriate first aid strategies, and confidence in providing first aid to individuals with mental illness. It is also associated with decreased stigma and an increase in help provided over time.

At the completion of the course you will be equipped with the skills and knowledge to safely have a conversation with a suicidal person.

*This is not a postvention course and is not recommended for individuals recently bereaved by suicide. The MHFA for the Suicidal Person course is not a therapy or a support group and it is important that people undertaking the course are feeling relatively robust when they undertake it.

Emergency Flood Relief Volunteer

We are looking for volunteers interested in helping on a Thursday 9am to 1pm and the occasional Saturday for a couple of hours in our Emergency Food Relief program called The Little Pantry.

Pantry VolunteerCommunity Services #1 is a community-based profit-for-purpose organisation that manages and delivers a range of community programs, such as family support services, children’s services and aged care programs. The CS#1 Food Pantry is a small community food outlet for people with a genuine need or those who are on a limited income. It makes good food and quality household products affordable and accessible.

Connect and Participate Expo VolunteersAs you may be aware, the Office for Disability is organising the Connect and Participate (CAP) Expo again, which will be held on Saturday 4 May 2019. The CAP Expo team is seeking volunteers to assist on the day. Shift times are short and it’s a fun, interactive day packed full of performances, music, food and ‘come and try’ activities!

The following roles are available:

Area warden; MC/stage manager; Information desk assistant; Photographer; and Traffic warden.

The Expo will start at 11:00am and finish at 4:00pm. Shift times are as follows:

LGBTI AWARENESS TRAINING for the AGED CARE SECTOR

Workshop scheduled for Tuesday, 19th March 2019

The AIDS Action Council of the ACT in partnership with the National LGBTI Health Alliance is delivering a workshop for the aged care sector, to gain a better understanding of the needs of the older lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) community members.

This workshop will be relevant for all aged care sector workers and organisations providing aged care services especially those working towards meeting the new Australian Government Quality Aged Care Standards. 

The SILVER RAINBOW LGBTI AWARENESS TRAINING for the AGED CARE SECTOR aligns directly with Standard 1.

Does your organisation show that it provides services that are culturally safe and inclusive, for everyone, including LGBTI people?

The training session will define the LGBTI communities, explore the ageing experience for LGBTI elders and examine the importance of providing inclusive person-directed care.

The workshop is an interactive and participative session that provides practical tips and resources for staff to implement immediately, as well as advocating for policy and organisational change and developing strategies to make workplaces more inclusive.

A small group of up to 15 participants for this informative and educational workshop.
