Most people assume that we shall pass on our assets to our children or other relatives in due course; yet, this may not always be the case, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect our assets from being taken to pay care home fees. In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that the State will only provide for those with little or no savings or assets; everyone else is expected to pay at least part (if not all) of his or her own costs. Currently, anyone with assets in excess of £22,250 (this figure includes the family home) is not eligible for any state help with his or her residential care fees; if you have more than £12,000, but less than £22,500, you are only entitled to partial assistance. e net result is that anyone, who owns his or her own home, is unlikely to receive assistance, even if they do not possess large amounts of cash-assets. Even if you DON'T have the cash readily available, the Department of Social Security can still place a charge against the family home, which enables it to recover the monies owing, when the property is eventually sold! Upon the first death, their share of the property (typically 50%) is placed into the Trust to be adminstered by the Trustees nominated in the Will, and this, usually, includes the surviving spouse. e Will also specifies who is to be the ultimate beneficiary of this share in the property, and the Trustee's duty is to protect the property for the beneficiaries' benefit. e surviving spouse, under the Trust's terms, has the right to remain living in the property for the rest of his or her life; on the death of the second spouse, the Trust comes to an end, and the property passes absolutely to the beneficiaries. A Property Trust Will can be your saviourUNSURPRISINGLY, few of us have considered what the effect might be on our savings and investments, or even our home, if (as is most probable) we ever needed residential care later in life. Most people assume that we shall pass on our assets to our children or other relatives in due course; yet, this may not always be the case, unless careful arrangements have been made to protect our assets from being taken to pay care home fees.In recent years, it has become increasingly apparent that the State will only provide for those with little or no savings or assets; everyone else is expected to pay at least part (if not all) of his or her own costs.Currently, anyone with assets in excess of £22,250 (this figure includes the family home) is not eligible for any state help with his or her residential care fees; if you have more than £12,000, but less than £22,500, you are only entitled to partial assistance. The net result is that anyone, who owns his or her own home, is unlikely to receive assistance, even if they do not possess large amounts of cash-assets.Even if you DON'T have the cash readily available, the Department of Social Security can still place a charge against the family home, which enables it to recover the monies owing, when the property is

A 'Property Trust' is based around three, basic elements: the basis on which you own your property, the Trust terms and your Wills, which contain the Trust investment. The Property Trust can only be created, while both partners remain alive and the property

must be owned as Tenants in Common (the Trust instrument is, then, included in both Wills, but does not come into force until the death of the first).Upon the first death, their share of the property (typically 50%) is placed into the Trust to be adminstered by the Trustees nominated in the Will, and this, usually, includes the surviving spouse. The Will also specifies who is to be the ultimate beneficiary of this share in the property, and the Trustee's duty is to protect the property for the beneficiaries' benefit. The surviving spouse, under the Trust's terms, has the right to remain living in the property for the rest of his or her life; on the death of the second spouse, the Trust comes to an end, and the property passes absolutely to the beneficiaries. For further details, contact Anthony Heath, Associate of Countrywide Tax and Trust Corporation & Golden Charter Funeral Plans, on (01782) 361971/07780-009245 or [email protected]

Are you a Wise Owl or a Head-Burying Ostrich when it comes to that d-word?IF you're an Ostrich, you prefer not to think about the inevitable. Being an Ostrich means trusting the fortunes of your loved ones to chance, once you've gone, and having no control over what happens to your possessions and who should benefit from them.

TO an ostrich, death is a five-letter word and a load of stigma.

IF, however, you're a wise owl, you take the time to think, question, and act in order to write a will, and take steps to protect your loved ones, when you're gone.

WHY BOTHER MAKING A WILL? MY FAMILY WILL GET EVERYTHING WHEN I DIE! WON'T THEY?

WRITING a Will may be something you've been thinking about for many years. The reasons for having a Will are many, but, if for no other reason, a Will makes life a lot easier for those you leave behind at a time of sorrow. If you die without a Will (Intestate), your family has to sort out many administrative items and are obliged to the decisions made by law as to who inherits what, decisions you should have really made by writing a Will.

AS to when you should write a Will, the answer is NOW. There may be plenty of life in you yet, but accidents and illness have absolutely no respect for age. Also, bear in mind that a modern Will is written in such a way that it shouldn't need much changing, so it's not something you have to think about often, but only in the event of a major change in circumstances, such as marriage, birth of a first child or divorce.

SO, why do many people put off the task of writing a Will?

EXCUSES: there are many excuses for putting off writing a Will. Here are the most common ones:

1. "WRITING A WILL IS TEMPTING FATE": One in three adults in Britain have already written a Will - so, if writing one has fatal results, the population would soon be reduced by 18 million people! In fact, the British annual death-rate is surprisingly stable and definitely bears no relation to the number of people who write Wills.

2. "I'VE GOT NOTHING TO LEAVE": Everybody leaves something. It may not be much, but, surely, that's even more reason to make sure it goes to those you care about? Also, it is not just making sure your worldly goods go to the right

people. As mentioned, a Will can mean a lot less inconvenience for those left to sort things out.

3. "I JUST HAVEN'T GOT ROUND TO IT": This is normally because the job doesn't rate high enough on your list of priorities. If the roof leaks, no matter what you're doing or how tight your finances, you get it fixed fast! We can honestly say that the vast majority of clients feel great after we have written their Wills.

We often receive comments, such as "What a relief" or "I've put it off for years, but, at last, I can rest easy."

THE ALTERNATIVE

IF you die without a Will, all your money and possessions (your Estate) will be distributed, according to strict legal rules and regulations. These rules are called the Laws of Intestacy. In many cases, the Intestacy Laws distribute an Estate in a way the deceased would not have wanted, sometimes with disastrous results.

Your circumstances will fall into one of the following categories: Married, Cohabiting and Single.

Many complexities can arise, and we shall cover these in full detail (as well as dispelling many unfounded, but popular, beliefs about them) in our next issue.

Exploring thE grEat amErican Songbook"MUSIC that's sharp, sassy and swinging".Featuring the Dave Newton Trio, the show, 'A Swinging Affair', at Newcastle's New Vic Theatre explores the Great American Songbook classics, such as 'Let's Call The Whole Thing Off', 'They All Laughed' and 'Can't We Be Friends?'.

It stars Claire Martin OBE (described as "among the four or five finest female jazz vocalists on the planet") and legendary saxophonist and "Godfather of Swing", Ray Gelato.

The performance (on Monday, June 1st) commences at 7.30pm, and tickets (priced at £16, £19 and £20.50 [with concessions and Under-16s Go Free]) are available from the New Vic Box Office or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

makE thE moSt of thiS bracE of bank holiday mondayS!IF readers want the ideal time to 'wine-and-dine' in style, what about the 'Merry Month of May'?!

Thanks to its brace of Bank Holidays on Mondays 4th and 25th, May offers a chance to catch up in the gourmandising stakes, if you missed out on Easter at the beginning of April.

Wherever you travel (or, indeed, if you stay within the neighbouring counties of Staffordshire, Cheshire and Shropshire), there's a host of venues, offering a veritable plethora of activities to amuse and fascinate all ages - from young children to senior citizens (and not forgetting Mum and Dad and Uncle Monty, too!).

In addition to participating in a host of leisure-oriented and recreational activities, readers can 'wine-and-dine' in sumptuous style, taking it easy all the way during your weekend.

Naturally, this area boasts a multitude of restaurants, wine bars, bistros, hotels and country inns, all featuring a wealth of stylish catering opportunities, but, these days, many pubs (and even clubs!) offer wide-ranging menus which seriously rival those of 'up-market restaurants and hotels!

Indeed, many public houses serve

quality food, combining good preparation and presentation, value-for-money and relaxed surroundings - producing a 'recipe for success' to suit all occasions and every pocket.

For example, many hostelries offer a full, three-course, traditional English Sunday luncheon (served 'with all the trimmings'), complemented by friendly, personal service.

Moreover, the range of fare on offer is extremely varied, too, and you can plump for everything from traditional 'pub grub' to 'grills' and fish and poultry dishes.

However, more exotic fare includes meals from acclaimed French,

Chinese, Indian, Spanish, Italian and Thai cuisine.

The May Bank Holidays provide you with the opportunity to revel in the delights of the barbecue, including sizzling steaks and fish cooked over the coals.

Roast chicken is waiting to be carved, and you can rustle up a sweet potato coleslaw, made with soured cream; new potatoes, dressed with capers and butter, or, perhaps, a lentil, lemon, rocket and basil-oil salad, followed by (possibly) a caramelised onion and goat's cheese tart.

"A safe, stimulating environment for every child"

"WE are really pleased we picked Trentham Pre-School; you do a wonderful job, but, most importantly, mt child loved to come.""My child has loved every day he has spent in your care, and thinks of you all as an extension of his family!"Just two of myriad, fulsome tributes from delighted parents to this charity-run pre-school, the mission-statement of which is "to provide a safe, stimulating environment for every child".Founded over 35 years ago, Trentham Pre-School takes children from the age of just two to five years, and its purpose-built premises include a garden, designed to incorporate all areas of learning. As the pre-school is charity-run, it is supervised by its parents' committee, meaning that ALL money raised goes back into resources for the children's enjoyment.Indeed, all parents of youngsters attending the pre-school are invited to join this committee, which is, naturally, involved in ALL aspects of how it is run.(Needless to say, committee membership is an ideal way of being actively involved in child's early years education).Trentham Pre-School follows the Early Years Foundation Stage Curriculum, and activities are planned to help children make good progress towards the Early Learning Goals. "We believe strongly in learning through play, especially for our younger children, and we ensure that activities are carefully planned to ensure that they are fun and stimulating," explains Manager, Karen Gavin.Places for two-, three- and four-

year-olds are currently available, with funding provided by the local authority. The pre-school employs ten members of staff, nine of whom are are qualified to Level 3 in Early Years Childcare and Education.Manager, Karen Gavin, has gained her Ordinary Degree, and three staff-members have now completed their Foundation Degree in Early Years, which puts the pre-school on target for the Government's agenda of a teacher or Early Years Professional in every setting by this year, 2015.Trentham Pre-School is rated as 'Good' by Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills), which reported: "A keyworker system provides a central figure for each child, and effective procedures are in plan to promote an exchange of information with parents.

"Children's self-esteem is raised, as staff-members offer them ongoing praise, and show interest in their ideas. "Children are valued and treated with equal concern, and activities are adapted to accommodate their needs."For further information, contact Karen Gavin on (01782) 642352.

nURSERY TiME 2015The best start in life!'TO stimulate and educate the children we care for': the mission statement of Roosters Day Nursery, where the fully-qualified staff has one, single objective in common with you, the parent, and that is a desire to provide the best start in life for your child/children.A more idyllic location (on the edge of Betley Village, situated in rural countryside, with pleasant views) could not be found than that enjoyed by this 44-place nursery, which opened in 1997, and provides a safe and stimulating environment for your child."Our aim is to allow your child to gain understanding and knowledge by by learning through play," explains Ruth Morris, Officer-in-Charge.The children are nurtured in three groups, age-dependent, and each group is looked after by a qualified team of caring staff, responding to and fulfilling the needs of each child. The nursery's secure, outdoor play-area provides its charges with an ideal opportunity for daily, physical development, and the garden offers both soft and hard play-areas, providing outdoor experiences (whatever the weather).Ofsted-registered Roosters is a 'feeder' nursery for all, three schools in the area (Betley, Meadows and John Offley), offering a 'wraparound service' to, and from, them; additionally, it provides Afterschool care for John Offley children, and on-site care for Betley and Meadows.

'HOME-FROM-HOME' NURSERIES EXCELTHE opening of Moorcroft Grange in September, 2014, was the latest stage in the admirable development of The Old Rectory Kindergarten, at Cobridge, in Stoke-on-Trent.

The Old Rectory was, initially, launched in 2003, as a 'home-from-home' nursery, and Moorcroft Grange continues this founding premise, further extending its working-links with the people of Cobridge.

Earlier in 2014, Cobridge Community Centre (located on adjacent Bursley Road) had been purchased, and, as Moorcroft Grange, it has been refurbished, so that a number of its rooms are available for use by local people as, for example, educational classes (in Maths, English, Cookery etc., according to public request) and a coffee bar.

Basting 79 places for children, aged up to eight years, Moorcroft Grange is the third nursery to be established, following the launch of Manor House, Knutton, in Newcastle-under-Lyme Borough, which opened on Knutton High Street, in April, 2013.

"We wanted to expand into training and offering classes for parents, and we have the room to do that at Moorcroft Grange," said a spokesperson for The Old Rectory Kindergarten.

"With the Government extending the free nursery entitlement, we saw an increase in demand at our original nursery."

As with TheOld Rectory and Manor House, the aim of the co-proprietors and hand-picked, highly-qualified staff is to offer the area's children a 'home-from-home' nursery, providing a safe, secure (and, importantly, 'fun') learning environment for their charges, allowing them to flourish and reach their full potential.

The development of Moorcroft Grange is a direct result of the huge popularity and burgeoning reputation for excellence enjoyed by The Old Rectory, with the demand for its services growing much quicker than could have been expected!

Housed in a superb, Victorian building (dating back to 1850), The Old Rectory offers myriad, exceptional facilities, including a fantastic, extensive external play-area (which is, naturally, totally secure); sensory garden; a new play-area; grassed area (ideal for picnic-teas); and a 'Pets' Corner', which, needless to say, is a big favourite with the children.

Staff-members pride themselves on promoting healthy foods and lifestyle, and all meals, freshly prepared each day by the nursery's excellent ch`ef, using home-grown fruit and vegetables.

The Old Rectory was lauded as 'Outstanding' in all areas by Ofsted (Office for Standards in Education, Children's Services and Skills).

At Knutton, Manor House is bright and airy, and designed to be an extremely child-friendly environment, with age-dedicated rooms, which flow naturally from one to another, helping children during transition.

(Each room has access to the outside area, allowing daily free-flow play).

Manor House earned praise as "a welcoming, happy and safe environment" from Ofsted, following its inspection in 2013.

Just the jab!!WITH regular outbreaks of infectious diseases, the importance of routine vaccinations in dogs and cats cannot be over-emphasised.

After initial courses of injections for puppies and kittens, dogs and cats need regular booster-vaccinations to maintain their immunity.CATS are, generally, vaccinated against Cat Flu and Enteritis (diarrhoea) and the Feline Leukaemia Virus (which can cause cancer and weaken the immune system), all of which can, otherwise, be fatal.DOGS can be protected against Parvovirus which causes bloody diarrhoea, as well as Leptospirosis, Hepatitis and Distemper virus which can cause liver, kidney and neurological disease. All of these are potentially fatal.Protection against BORDETELLA (also known as Kennel Cough) is also often advisable.

Other vaccines can be given in specific circumstances - for instance, rabies vaccination is needed for pets travelling abroad with the Pet Travel Scheme.LEPTOSPIROSIS has been in the news recently, and is a bacterial disease affecting many animal species, including dogs and, occasionally, human beings.Carried by rats and other rodents, it survives in damp environments, including still or slow-moving water.

Dogs, which enjoy swimming or playing in ponds and ditches, are at particular risk Finally, the title of this article is a little misleading, in that your booster-visit is SO MUCH MORE than 'just a jab'!The Croft Veterinary Clinic, at Newcastle, will also give your pet a complete health-check - allowing its staff to flag up any health-issues before they become too much of a problem.CONTACT THE CROFT ON (01782) 711800 FOR AN APPOINTMENT!

Healthy living vital to battling dementiaNEW research suggests that the best way to fend off the memory-loss and mental decline accompanying advancing age may be dancing, doing sudoko puzzles and eating fish and fruit.

While there have been myriad suggestins that keeping physically and mentally active and eating a good diet can help to keep the brain

in good order, most studies have lasted for no more than a few weeks and have rarely offered those taking part the complete package.

Researchers in Finland recruited 1,260

people, aged between 60 and 77, and, in effect, reorganised the lives of half of them.

They were given regular gym-sessions with physiotherapists to strengthen their muscles one to three times a week, and took part in aerobic exercises, sometimes in groups, two to five times a week.

The group had brain-training, using computer-programmes, where success leads to another layer of difficulty.

Its members were also advised to eat a Nordic diet (not dissimilar to the Mediterranean diet), containing fish at least twice a week, lots of fruit and olive- (and other vegetable-) oils.

The other group was given standard health advice.

At the end of two years, those who had been eating a better diet, getting active and training their brains scored ,on average, 25% higher in mental-tests than those in the other group.

In some of the tests, the difference was even more striking; for executive function

(the brain's ability to organise and regulate thought-processes) the intervention group scored 85% higher and, in processing speed, 150% higher.

The researchers will, now, follow the progress of the group for seven years, to try to discover whether diet, exercise and brain-training could prevent Alzheimer's disease and other forms of dementia.

Professor Miia Kivipelto, from the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden, who led the research, said that the work suggested people could make changes in their lifestyle

At Ridgways Hearing Care, Queen Street, Newcastle you can obtain free, independent professional advice on all aspects of your Hearing Care.

If you are having problems understanding what others are saying, especially in a group or noisy situation then you may be suffering from a hearing loss. There are many reasons for a loss of Hearing and at Ridgways we can guide you towards the best course of action.

Your problems may simply due to a build up of ear wax which we can quickly remove using a safe irrigation technique. The use of drops prior to the treatment is not necessary and appointments are often available on the same day that you make the call to our centre.

Your loss may be due to a normal age related hearing loss where you lose the clarity of speech in certain situations. This problem is easily remedied with the fitting of a hearing system. We can supply hearing systems to suit all degrees of hearing loss and all budgets. Simply call for a free, no obligation appointment and the best available advice will be offered to you.

In October this year the supply of NHS Hearing Aids in the area will be changing. People with mild to moderate hearing loss will find it far more difficult to obtain hearing aids. If you or a family member would like free advice on whether you will still be eligible for NHS Hearing aids

please contact the office and we again will offer you the best possible advice on the options available to you. Professional Hearing Associations are trying to fight this decision as Hearing loss has been linked to the effects of dementia and Alzheimers and unteated Hearing Loss can lead to isolation and depression so it is vital that all Hearing losses are provided with the necessary amplification.

Finally, if you or anybody that you know suffer from a very sudden hearing loss which may bring associated noises in the ears, dizziness or maybe just a hearing loss in one ear it is vital to obtain immediate medical advice. If the sudden loss is due to a virus and medication is administered within a 48 hour period there is a possibility the Hearing will be recovered. Unfortunately if left untreated the hearing loss may be permanant. At Ridgways we are trying to raise awareness of the danger signs of a sudden hearing loss and if this does happen and you are in any doubt about what to do please contact Ridgways and we will offer the appropriate advice.

that might help stave off mental

decline, although it might be easiest to tackle one area at a time, such as increasing physical activity.

"It is good to start with problems that you know you should be doing something about," she added.

It was not necessary to attend the gym, but dancing, she averred, ticked a number of boxes, stating: "Here, you have the physical component, and it is social and

fun."

The research found that social interaction was mentally stimulating and, therefore, helpful.

Sudoko puzzles and crosswords, help stimulate the brain, as do computer-games, reading books, and even learning a new language.

The researchers said that even small changes to people's lives could potentially reduce dementia, writing in the Lancet: "About a third of cases of

Alzheimer's disease worldwide could be attributable to low education, physical inactivity, obesity, smoking and depression."

The North Staffs Heart Committee is an independent charity serving the interests of cardiac patientsresiding or receiving treatment in North Staffordshire. IT IS NOT ASSOCIATED WITH ANY OTHERNATIONAL OR LOCAL CHARITY OF SIMILAR NAME

Every guarantee honoured over 47 years!

FOR more than 40 years, Congleton Glass has taken great pride in adhering to its original ethos of good service, premier quality and excellent workmanship.

Since the family business was established in 1968, it has acquired a nonpareil reputation for providing its customers with the highest-quality windows and doors.

When the business first opened its doors 46 years ago, it comprised just one man and a single van; however, it has (deservedly) expanded to the point where it is, now, one of the busiest glazing companies in the town, serving clients not only in Cheshire, but also throughout the North-West.

As a double-bonus for readers, Congleton Glass sells the very best in windows and doors from such top-rated brands in the industry as KAT, Nova and Rockdoor, but offers them at eminently-affordable prices.

The Royle Street business, then, complements this by installing all products to correct standards,

adhering to strict guidelines on energy-efficiency and ventilation (as set out by FENSA [the Fenestration Self-Assessment Scheme]).

This insistence upon first-class products AND service has, necessarily, meant that it has outlasted numerous, other companies unable to match its sheer skill and invaluable, decades-long experience, which has allowed it to identify the kind of quality and value that will enhance and protect a client's property.

Quite simply, customers may locate cheaper products on the market, but these lack the service, support and longevity which Congleton Glass offers.

Pay a visit to Congleton Glass (located by the River Dane, close to the very heart of the town centre) and you will discover that its stock represents the very latest in window-technology, while its doors provide security, longevity and style.

All of the company's PVCu products come with a redoubtable, 10-year warranty.

Additionally, Congleton Glass features a pleasingly-diverse range of miscellaneous services, including the supply of materials, broken-window-repairs and cut-glass and plastics.

Choose independent businesses - you KNOW it makes sense!!AS the month of May bursts upon us with its brace of Bank Holiday Mondays, it's time to get ready for 2015's Summer season.

The (much-hoped-for) arrival of a blessing of plentiful sunshine necessitates our thoughts turning to a number of related subjects - many of them revolving around long-awaited Summer holidays.

These ruminations might revolve around preparing your vehicle for the rigours of vacational motoring, whilst others see the Summer as the time to improve your domicile (in terms of decoration, maintenance or

extension) - not to mention in considerable amounts of gardening!

Of course, Summer is not only synonymous with holidaying; it is also a time for entertaining (thanks to ubiquitous barbecues) and being entertained!

The question, then is to whom to you turn to satisfy yur needs.

One answer is to support local, independent businesses, rather than further filling the already-replete coffers of superstores and national franchises.

Why so? Well, apart from supporting your local community, there are

many reasons for doing so, since independent businesses select their products and services, with the needs of their local customers, thus guaranteeing a much broader range of product-choice and quality - unlike the 'big boys' who are driven by their own interests!

When you make a purchase from, or choose the services of, a locally-owned, independent business, the benefits to the area's community are, in turn, tremendous.

These local firms create more jobs locally, and, in some cases, provide better wages and conditions than the chainstores.

It is a fact that the revenue from small businesses goes back into the local economy, enriching the community and building a stronger economy in the locale.

MAY 2015 | 17sales: 01782 461711

It is self-evident that communities, which preserve their 'one-of-a-kind' businesses and distinctive character, possess an economic advantage.

Consider: local ownership ensures that important decisions are made locally by people who live in the community and, as

a result, will feel the impact of those decisions.

It's a paradox; even though a single, local shop may have a smaller selection of goods, when compared to a big chain outlet, choice and diversity in products and services are

enhanced.

A multiplicity of independent retailers creates increased variety!

We are all-too-aware of the problems associated when you order a product from a national store, and it is damaged or isn't the correct item.

There's nowhere to go and no one to help resolve the problem.

However, when you purchase something from a local shop, you do

have somewhere to go, in the eventuality of a defective or unsatisfactory product.

To put it 'in a nutshell', customer-service is more personal and responsive with a local, independent business; you are not just another order-number, you are a person living within the same community!

WEDDINGS & ALL OCCASIONSThe art of costing receptionsWHEN it comes to preparing for the 'Big Day', it is axiomatic that planning is the key to success when you 'tie the knot'!Yes, in order to ensure that you and your beloved are the next divorce-statistics casualties, it is axiomatic that your wedding be organised with the precision of a military campaign! It is imperative that you work closely to your budget, thus avoiding any unnecessary over-spending.The first question to be answered is a deceptively-simple one: who foots the bill?In olden days (actually, until quite recently), it was assumed that the bride's parents would pay all the costs; however, this is becoming less common.Alternatively, couples pay for it themselves, or both sets of parents end up sharing the costs. It can (to say the least) be a sensitive question, and a common solution is for the groom's parents to pay for all the culinary fare (in itself, a substantial percentage of the wedding-costs.It is sagacious to open a 'wedding account' with your bank to facilitate the auditing of costs (one sapient pointer is to remember that you should always budget for an over-spend of at least 10%).You should think about numbers of guests and the

type of service as soon as possible, so that you know what you are budgeting for.Are you going to have the traditional, morning service with a luncheon for close family, to be followed by a larger function during the evening, or do you prefer a late-afternoon service immediately moves on to the evening reception?(The latter is the better bet, in terms of economy, since you will, then, have only one event to manage and pay for).Naturally, a weekday wedding will also reduce costs, but many guests will also find this too restrictive.A much more contentious (but increasingly-considered) suggestion is to invite guests to make a financial contribution to your 'Big Day' (possibly in lieu of wedding-present).However, you phrase and arrange it, it WILL reduce significantly the cost of your wedding-reception!

YOU WON'T FIND FRESHER FOOD!!KNOWING where your breakfast, lunch and/or dinner has come from is important.

Sustainably-produced, local and seasonal food is better for the environment - and it tastes better, too!

Farm shops sell local produce

which has, often, been grown, picked, reared or made on the farms where they are located (and you can't food much fresher than that!).

They enable you get back in touch with your food, eating fresher, healthier and organic, local foods - fresh from the farm.

Top ch`efs agree that fresh, seasonal produce is best, while a basket of fruit and vegetables bought during the Summer can be as much as a third-cheaper than the same basket purchased out of season, offering much better value-for-money.

Britain produces the best asparagus in the world, and May is the month when it really comes into the season.

Also in season this month are cauliflower, cucumber, curly

HEAVENLY FLAVOURS ABOUND AT HAYLEY'S BOUTIQUE EMPORIUMYOU'LL be just 'ecstatic' about Hayley Beresford's business on Cheadle High Street!

Whether you're an aficionado of coffee or an absolute beginner, appositely-named Coffee Bliss promises a delicious experience for every taste, featuring more than 20, different flavours to savour, either on the premises or to take away (and there's also a variety of coffees to make at home).

Having previously had a stall within Cheadle Indoor Market, Hayley moved into the High Street shop on Wednesday, January 14th, 2015, and, since then, her boutique emporium, which is dedicated to celebrating and exploring the refreshing flavours of Britain's most fashionable beverage, has proved a 'winner' with people of all ages (and every palate)!

"I've got regular customers in their 20s and others in their 80s," explained sole proprietor, Hayley, who launched her business, frustrated by the fact that she was obliged to go online to satisfy her thirst for quality, flavoured coffees.

"The big problem is that, obviously, you can't smell the aromas or taste the flavours online," she said.

Connoisseurs will be delighted by the sheer variety of choice, and novices to the world of coffee are assured of friendly help and advice (not to mention a warm welcome) from Hayley, who confirmed: "We can give all the guidance they need.

"People are welcome to come and smell the coffees, as what appeals to the nose usually appeals to the palate - you can try a coffee and go from there."

All aficionados will be overjoyed to learn that Hayley can offer them a globally-prized phenomenon, in the form of Kopi Luwak - a specialist coffee, hailing from Indonesia (and the world's most expensive!).

"I'm selling Kopi Luwak by the cup," commented Hayley, adding: "The civet cats of Indonesia pick the best coffee berries and eat them for the fleshy pulp.

"The bean inside is, then, expelled and collected for thorough washing and roasting.

"It's hard to get hold of, and ours is 100 per cent. certified - drinking Kopi Luwak is on quite a few people's bucket-list!"

In addition to a selection of premium and flavoured coffee beans (from smooth Blue Mountain to rare, hand-picked Cuban Cubita), customers will encounter a range of flavoured instant coffees, including Havana Rum, Almond Amaretto, Bourbon Vanilla, as stocked in Harvey Nichols.

Remember: you can pop into Hayley's shop, sit down and enjoy a cup of coffee during its opening-hours!

Coffee Bliss is open from 9.15am to 4pm on Tuesday, Friday and Saturday and between 9.15am and 3pm, Thursday (closed on Monday and Wednesday), and you can contact Hayley there on 07546-530292.

lettuce, rhubarb and spinach.

In June, Summer fruits are ripe, and elderflower makes a great ingredient in desserts or wine.

Strawberries, cucumber, spinach and courgettes are among the other fruit and vegetables coming into season.

Strawberries, straight from the plant, are best in July; also in season are Brambley apples, beans (runner and broad), blueberries, Savoy cabbage, carrots, cauliflower, celery, cherries, courgette, lettuce (cos, curly and iceberg), peas, raspberries, rhubarb and spinach.

EXCELLENT SERVICE AND PRODUCE FROM CO-OWNERS, JEAN & ROBERT!!THIS family-owned business (long an integral part of the local community) is set to become even better!

For, co-proprietors, Jean and Robert Phillips, who have run Country Cabin Farm Shop (located at Cocknage, near Barlaston [and a short drive from Longton town centre], on the edge of the City of Stoke-on-Trent) for the past, 25 years, and have farmed locally since 1976, are looking to make improvements to the service and stock offered to customers.

"Our farm was, originally, a Staffordshire County Council one, and we diversified into yogurt-production, using milk from our dairy herd, selling it to customers at the door," explained Robert.

"Demand increased, so we decided to open a small shop in a cabin (hence the name), but the business, eventually, outgrew this, and, in 2004, we built a larger shop.

"The dairy herd was sold, and we started to rear Aberdeen Angus beef to sell through the shop.

"In 2014, we retired from farming, and purchased the premises from Staffordshire County Council.

"We still have strong links with local agriculture, and buy locally, where possible," added Robert.

"Now that we own the premises, it will make a big difference to us; we're hoping to develop

the business further," said Jean.

Country Cabin Farm Ship genuinely is a family business, with the popular couple joined by their daughter, Lynn, as a full-time worker, while son, Michael, is involved in its setting-up.

Admirably living up to its name, the farm shop offers a large selection of locally-sourced, fresh fruit and vegetables and locally-reared beef, lamb and poultry.

Readers will also discover locally-produced sausages, pies, cheeses and free-range eggs, plus (for those who prefer it) frozen fruit and vegetables.

Country Cabin also comprises a garden centre, and visitors can make their purchases from a terrific choice of perennial plants, composts and concrete and stone garden ornaments.

What more, there's no problem about getting what you want from Country Cabin Farm Shop, as Jean and Robert's business is open seven days a week (9am-

5.30pm, Monday-Thursday; 8.30am-5.30pm, Friday; 8.30am-5pm, Saturday, and 10am-4pm, Sunday and all Bank Holidays [excepting Christmas]).

You can contact Robert, Jean and Lynn there on (01782) 327429.

An "exciting time" for the 'Mother Town of the Potteries'!!THIS year, 2015, is forecast to be a positive one for Burslem, as the town states firmly that it 'open for business', and outlines a number of initiatives to ensure its continued regeneration.

Following the approval of plans, local school, Haywood Academy, will turn a former town hall into a sixth-form centre with a capacity for 200 young people during the first, twelve months and 400 by 2016; with subsequent footfall in the town.

Haywood Academy recently received an award from the Government to open the new sixth form Academy for the City, from September, 2015.

The award of £2.1 million from the Department of Education is one of the largest capital awards in the country for this type of project, and is recognition that the Academy is a successful and popular school with a "compelling vision for the future success of the students of Burslem and the surrounding areas".

Said Academy Headteacher, Carl Ward: "The Old Town Hall has a special place in the hearts of Burslem people.

"Bringing it back to life with a thriving sixth form college will be a massive boost to the town's regeneration; it will act as a catalyst for growth.

"The town has a deep-rooted cultural and entrepreneurial tradition: Josiah Wedgwood's house is just across the street, and over the way is the inspirational Burslem school of Art and the Wedgwood Institute."

The academy is sponsored by local companies, including ceramics manufacturer, Steelite

International.

Commented Steelite International Chief Executive, Kevin Oakes: "The key objective is to support local education and to foster good relationships between education , industry and the community."

A further £1.7 million is set to be spent, bringing buildings and businesses back to life in two of Stoke-on-Trent's towns; boosting their economies at the same time.

During the last, eighteen months, works to the value of £765,000 have been completed on five buildings and public spaces in Burslem.

One of the City's most historic buildings - the Wedgwood Institute, on Queen Street, in Burslem - is scheduled to be revivified, as the first phase of a landmark regeneration project commences, resulting in the creation of up to 150 jobs.

The Wedgwood Institute has been awarded European Regional Development Fund and Heritage Lottery grants (totally £535,000) from the Burslem and Longton Building Improvement Scheme (TH13).

This, combined with contributions from English Heritage and Stoke-on-Trent City Council, will fund weatherproofing repairs to allow accessibility to the ground-floor.

A NEW role for Burslem's imposing Old Town Hall.

Flirtations, frictions & spats!!THE play, which proved the greatest-ever theatrical success enjoyed by Nöel Coward, is coming to Newcastle's New Vic Theatre during May.Directed by Elizabeth Newman, Coward's sparkling comedy, 'Private Lives',follows the flirtations, frictions and spats of a couple whose pasts are about to catch up with them, it was his greatest-ever theatrical success. On a romantic evening in 1930s' France, Amanda and Victor are enjoying their first night as newly-weds.But, but they're blissfully unaware that her ex-husband, Elyot, and his beautiful, new wife, Sybl, are celebrating their own honeymoon in the hotel-room next door! When the divorcees cross paths, the reunion sets off a sequence of events that nobody could foresee. And, as champagne-corks pop and passions are rekindled, the sparks begin to fly!"Two hours of comic bliss" enthused The Telegraph.'Private Lives' opened the new Phoenix Theatre, in London, in 1930, starring Coward, Gertrude Lawrence, Adrianne Allen and Laurence Olivier, and 'The Master' wrote one of his most popular songs, 'Some Day I'll Find You', for the play.It was such a huge hit that, in 1931, a Hollywood version (directed by Sidney Franklin and starring Normas Shearer as Amanda, Robert Montgomery [Elyot], Una Merkel [Sybl] and Reginald Denny [Victor]) followed; Coward thought it "passable".A New Vic and Octagon Theatre Bolton production, 'Private Lives' runs from Wednesday, May 6th, to Saturday, May 23rd, at 7.30pm, with 2.15pm matinee performances on Saturdays 16th and 23rd.Tickets (priced at £13-£22, with group-discounts of £2 for parties of ten or more, £2 off for concessionaries and Under-6s Go Free) can be purchased from the New Vic Box Office on (01782) 717962, or online at www.newvictheatre.org.uk

Be thoughtful!!IF you are intending to turn your house into a supremely attractive home, it's important to realise that it doesn't cost a fortune!

Indeed, it costs no money whatsoever to rearrange the furniture, but this simple, domestic act can make a world of difference - as long as it is done thoughtfully.

The key to success is thinking about how you use each piece of furniture (whether it's a small table which is used merely to display your car-keys, or a large sofa that is a favourite spot, upon which to watch television), and ensuring that it is fulfilling its purpose.

But it is important not to feel inhibited about 'your space'; try mixing old and new pieces, or experimenting with striking aesthetics alongside more simple, muted features.

Garden delights!TWELVE acres of relaxing gardens await visitors to the Dorothy Clive Garden.

Set amidst glorious countryside, where the borders of Staffordshire, Cheshire and Shropshire intersect, this beautiful, hillside garden has continuously evolved since 1940.

In that year, Colonel Harry Clive began landscaping a disused, Victorian quarry for his beloved wife, Dorothy.

Plant enthusiasts will discover lots of unusual species - from the spectacular to the supremely subtle- and an abundance of assorted flora will satisfy all tastes (and many are available to buy!).

The Dorothy Clive Garden is both intimate and informal; a network of paths ensure that there is always something to discover and delight.

Throughout the year, the garden hosts a wide variety of events, from small, guided walks to major plant-hunters' fairs.

Home-made food (including gluten-free choices) is available in the Garden Tea Room.

Situated in North Staffordshire at Willoughbridge, near Market Drayton, close to the Shropshire and Cheshire borders, the Dorothy Clive Garden is located on the A51 midway, between Stone and Nantwich.

During the Winter, the Garden and Tea Room is open from 10am to 4pm every weekend in October, February and March.

Disabled and coach-parking is available.

For admission-prices, special offers for group-bookings, events and all other information, visit www.dorothyclivegarden.co.uk or email: [email protected]

Expert Car Inspections

Clive offers decades of experienceCLIVE Harris added a second 'component' to his Staffordshire-based company over four years ago - and he definitely possesses the necessary expertise to ensure complete customer-satisfaction!

For, appositely-named Expert Car Inspections benefits from Clive's 40-plus years' experience within the motor trade - starting with an indentured apprenticeship and gaining his City & Guilds qualifications, to a 28-years-long service with VOSA (Vehicle and Operator Services Agency), the Government regulatory body, working on many aspects of vehicle-maintenance and compliance.

All this has given Clive an invaluable amount of expertise in facets of the motor trade - experience which, sadly, many people carrying out these types of inspections lack.

In addition, staff working for him boast similar (or very experienced) backgrounds, and their quality-of-work is regularly checked to ensure that each customer enjoys a consistent experience.

As a result, motorists are reassuringly secure in the knowledge that any vehicle inspected by ECI will be subjected to a rigorous inspection, assuring customers that a comprehensive report will be compiled to allow them to enter into a purchase or sale fully informed.

Complete car inspections are available

- all carried out by fully-trained and highly-experienced staff - from as little as £80.

However, ECI's remit also takes in vans (up to 3,500kg), motor homes and HG (Heavy Goods) and PC (Passenger Carrying) vehicles.

Complementing all the experience possessed by ECI is the business's simple pricing-structure, which means that you can be confident that an expert is carrying out the inspection at realistic, eminently-affordable rates!

While car inspections start from £80 (£130 for 4x4s, classic cars and limousines), the price for vans is £80 (up to 2,999kg) and £100 (3,000-3,500kg), with the rate motorhomes £170 (up to 3,500kg) and £210 (all other motorhomes).

Full engineer's reports on cars and vans are available for just £150, and those for motorhomes, HGVs and PCVs cost only £170.

Expert Car Inspections is an arm of the parent company, CCH Vehicle & Training Services, a consultancy which Clive launched during April, 2008, and provides an invaluable service not to the MoT garage-network and operators of heavy goods and passenger-carrying vehicles (the latter including Arriva Midlands).

At the same time, it is also contracted to a very large number of garages operating the annual MoT Scheme, ensuring that they operate within the parameters laid down in the MoT Testing Regulations and the operating guidelines dictated by VOSA.

Another record-breaking month for car-sales NEW car-registrations in March, 2015, rose by 6% to almost half-a-million vehicles.A staggering 492,774 cars were delivered to new car-buyers (setting a 16-year record high), according to the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT).It was up 6% on March, 2014, and took the total for this year so far to 734,588, a 6.8% rise on the January-March figure last year, which means that the new car-market has been growing for 37 consecutive months.Said SMMT chief executive, Mike Hawes: "The best month this century for new car

registrations is a welcome boost for the UK's automotive sector."The challenge for a new government and industry will be to maintain this momentum and to strengthen Britain's manufacturing capabilities through continued investment, innovation and policies which maintain our global competitiveness."Whatever the election result, the new government must keep up the commitment to the sector which is delivering at home and abroad."The sales-boost was evidence of strong business confidence, coming from firms taking upgrading company cars, averred Chris Sutton, managing director of motor finance specialist,

Black Horse (part of Lloyds Banking Group)."The industry has, for a while, been suggesting that demand will ease for new cars, but, based on current data, it is hard to predict when this growth will slow down," he said."The continued low-interest-rate environment, coupled with attractive and affordable car-finance deals cntinue to play a strong role in maintaining growth in this part of the UK economy."The figures add to evidence of rising economic confidence, leading up to the election on Thursday, May 7th.The SMMT announced that sales of alternatively-fuelled vehicles, including plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles, also continue to rise, with 14,335 units sold in March, an increase of more than 60% on the same month in 2014.

F U N E R A L S E R V I C E SOptimum advice at a time of personal griefIT is an indubitable truth that the healing process is something which each and every person in the country must experience at least once in his or her life.

For, bereavement is, quite simply,

one of the great immutables in quotidian life.

It is, however, equally true that, when it impinges on our consciousness, the overwhelming majority of us are completely unprepared for the demands which it makes upon us.

It is, of course, essential that we are able to cope with the practical and emotional demands encountered at this potentially harrowing time.

The subject of death was a constant theme in conversation and thought in Victorian and Edwardian society, prior to World War I.

But, now, in the early-21st century, it is something that is (to put it mildly) assiduously avoided.

Accordingly, when we losed a loved one (be it a partner, relative or a very close friend), it is imperative that we acquire the support, help and care of a reputable, well-established firm of

funeral directors.

This company should possess the requisite experience of dealing with all the arrangements and, at the same time, providing optimum advice at your time of personal grief.

Its professional standards ensure that kindness, sympathy and understanding combine to lift the inexorable burden imposed upon the bereavedas is humanly possible, providing help, comfort and support, when it is most required.

In truth, grieving is a healing process, and, whilst our sense of loss will never disappear entirely, it will diminish, as a return to normalcy (in terms of working and social life) reasserts itself.

Highly-professional services & unbeatable, honest prices from Kark & his team"HAD four tyres about 18 months ago, and, at the time, no one in the Stoke area could beat that price. Just called up for a price for two more, and, yet again, no one can beat their price. Great service, as well, off the boys. Pop in and they're straight onto the job. CANNOT BE BETTERED!!"

Just one of a host of fulsome testimonials from ultra-satisfied customers of Karl Jones and his expert team, who recently celebrated their second anniversary of highly-successful trading, at Tyre Time, thanks to their knowledge and

professionalism.

As all 'savvy' motorists fully realise, tyres are vital to your car, and their upkeep is incredibly important to its performance and safety - problems can make your vehicle unsafe and uneconomical.

You can rely on the Fenton-based business to check your tyres, as well as fit new ones from its large range of different manufacturers.

Boasting the latest technology (including laser-tracking and professional balancing-equipment), Tyre Time offers FREE tyre- and pressure-checks.

WHY RISK YOUR SAFETY, WHEN A QUICK AND AFFORDABLE TYRE-CHECK IS ALL YOU NEED?!

Moreover, Tyre Time is always honest

(its FREE advice will never be misleading).

Tyre Time is open six days a week (9am-6pm, Monday-Friday, and 9am-2pm, Saturday), and Karl and his team will be more than happy to answer any questions

(by personal visit, over the 'phone or via email), regarding getting your tyres sorted.

They have both the expertise AND experience to turn their hands to any tyre-related job, and you can rest assured that your vehicle is worked on by professionals.

"I'd like to thank everyone for coming back to us and recommending us to their friends and relatives," said Karl

Jones.

AS AN ADDED BONUS, TYRE TIME IS NOW A LOCAL, OFFICIAL STOCKIST OF ACCLAIMED ALLOYGATORS.
