Held in bush camps, barren prison houses and for months on a hijacked tuna longliner anchored off the Somali coast, he survived as a hostage with surprising reserves of stoic detachment and strength in the most desperate of circumstances. Moore’s compelling memoir recounts his harrowing ordeals in a rich and surprising story of survival.CODE: 8500.101

CONSPIRACIES: THEORY OR FICTIONIn an eye-opening class, we will examine and get to the bottom of actual U.S. government declassified documents that will shock and surprise you. Why was the meaning of the word “conspiracy” changed by the CIA after the Kennedy assassinations? Was the cause of the Titanic sinking something much different than you have been told? There are quite literally dozens of “news stories” that are more like manufactured events that are diametrically opposed to the history that we have been conditioned to believe. There are a plethora of “theories” that have remarkable data showing that everything we have been told is not quite what it seems.

WORDS AND MUSIC – THE SHOWS AND MOVIES OF FRANK LOESSER AND JERRY HERMANOnly a select few in the annals of American popular music have successfully accomplished the daunting task of both composing music and writing lyrics. Irving Berlin and Cole Porter were the first and their shows lit up the “Great White Way” during the first 30 years of Broadway’s fabled “Golden Age.” Two gifted sons of Jewish immigrants then took up the torch: Frank Loesser and the man he mentioned, Jerry Herman. Loesser’s Guys & Dolls, Most Happy Fella, and How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying delighted audiences throughout the ‘50s and into the ‘60s; Herman’s Hello Dolly, Mame and La Cage Aux Folles brought audiences to their feet into the ‘80s and acclaimed revivals of their shows continue into the 21st century. The course will look at the lives and careers of these two greats. We’ll look at video clips from their hits and misses that also include interviews with many of their collaborators and the stars of their shows, as well as some of the wildest and funniest inside stories you’ll ever hear. We will embark on the docent-led Discovery Walking Tour which will be customized to meet our group’s particular interests. Afterwards, there will be time to meander and possibly visit the wonderful gift shop and unique plant patio. If the Boddy House, built as the home of Descanso founder, E. Manchester Boddy, in the late 1930’s, is open, we might be able to include a brief peek inside. For lunch we will travel to Montrose. There we will eat at the New Moon Restaurant known for its contemporary Chinese cuisine on your own tab. A highly recommended restaurant by our Tour Director at Descanso Gardens.

EDWARDS AIR FORCE BASE TOUROff we go into the wild blue yonder…well, maybe in our dreams! But we do have an exclusive opportunity to take a docent-led tour of Edwards Air Force Base. Located in the western Mojave Desert, the Base is strategically situated next to Rogers Dry Lake, a desert salt pan which provides a natural extension to Edwards’ runways…the perfect site for flight testing. It has subsequently been home to many of aviation’s most important and daring flights: Chuck Yeager first breaking the sound barrier, Space Shuttle Landings, and more recently, the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter. Onboard an Air Force bus, a step-on guide will provide an extensive narrated driving tour of the base to see hangars, aircraft along the flight line, and the lakebed which is home to 22 runways. Enjoy time at leisure for lunch on your own at the NASA food court, as well as a visit to the NASA gift shop and a visit to the Air Force Flight Test Center Museum. Leave for home at 3:00 PM. REQUIRED: Security information: Full name, date of birth, place of birth, country of citizenship, driver’s license, SSN Last 4, and for non-USA citizens, passport, country of issue and number. NOTE: We will be in the high desert so remember to bring a jacket.
