Introducing a New Face Around the Senior Center Dr. Mary Lynn Piven, a psychiatric-mental health clinical nurse specialist and faculty mem-

ber at the UNC-CH School of Nursing, is working one day a week with the Orange County De-partment on Aging’s Transitions Team.

She was born and raised in Staley, NC and has been a psychiatric-mental health nurse for over 30 years and specializes in the mental health care of older adults. She and her team recently trained the Orange County Department on Aging’s staff members to implement an evidence-based practice - Healthy IDEAS.

Healthy IDEAS is a structured depression program that prepares social workers, nurses and care coordinators to identify depression in at-risk older adults, and to facilitate access to treatment. It targets chronically ill older adults and addresses commonly recognized barriers to mental health care: detecting depression, helping residents understand depression as treat-able; assisting them to gain knowledge and skills to self-manage it; and linking primary care, mental health care and social-service providers. Healthy IDEAS empowers residents to manage their depression through a behavioral-activation (BA) approach that encourages involvement in meaningful, positive activities.

In addition to her expertise concerning depression detection and management, Mary Lynn has expertise working with most any mental health issue affecting the quality of life and func-tional status of older adults. She also has experience with severe and persistently mentally ill people, as well having expertise in individual, group and family therapy. She is available on Wednesdays at the Seymour Center. Please contact the Aging Help Line at 919-968-2087 for an appointment, or just drop by her office for a chat on Wednesday mornings.

Come! Celebrate!

Good News for the 2012-2017 Master Aging Plan

On May 14 at 4:30 pm, everyone is invited to come to the Seymour Center to celebrate that the 2012-2017 Master Aging Plan is on its way! Approved by the Orange County Department on Aging Advisory Board on April 11 and accepted by the Board of County Commissioners on May 1, the fi ve-year Plan will offi cially begin to be implemented on July 1, 2012. There is a lot to celebrate!

Approximately 140 Orange County residents took part in the planning process for this Master Aging Plan. These residents were interviewed, surveyed, and many were involved in the actual wording and prioritizing of the objectives and strategies that will begin to be implemented in July of this year!

Five UNC Master of Public Health students completed their masters’ degree by helping to organize and write the Plan. They will be given awards at the celebration and, hopefully, will end up with great jobs after graduation!

The Chapel Hill News gave the Orange County Department on Aging a “Roses” award for its energetic work in developing a new Master Aging Plan, which was also recognized by the NC Division on Aging. In addition, the UNC School of Public Health announced that fi ve more masters’ degree students will spend the next year helping us implement the MAP!

The Orange County Department on Aging is committed to keeping you informed on the 2012-2017 Master Aging Plan’s progress toward implementation of its goals and objectives. Look for a MAP Report Card in every Senior Times. We will let you know what is being worked on, how it is progressing - and how you can give us feedback on what you think about it!

The Master Aging Plan is YOUR PLAN FOR THE FUTURE! Pay attention! Stay involved! Give us feedback!

The Senior Wellness Clinic at

The Central Orange Senior Center and The Seymour Center

Clinic’s Purpose:

The purpose of this new multidisciplinary clinic is to enable seniors to live independently in the community by focusing screening and treatment on mood, memory, mobility, and falls prevention. By early identifi cation of risk factors we hope to prevent the negative consequences of falls and disability.

Team of Specialists in Aging:

◆ Geriatrician◆ Occupational Therapist ◆ Pharmacist ◆ Physical Therapist ◆ Social Worker ◆ Dietitian

What will a visit to the clinic include?

◆ Multidisciplinary assessments◆ Clients can expect to spend 1-2 hours or so visiting with the team.◆ We work together to create individual recommendations for medical

care, exercise, or environmental risks. Also, we might suggest further testing and/or individual and family counseling.

◆ We will schedule a second visit to follow-up on our recommendations. ◆ The team’s fi ndings will be shared with the client’s primary care doctor.

What if a person already has a doctor? Our team will not replace a person’s regular doctor. We plan to support the care of primary physicians by offering this specialty screening clinic and maintaining open lines of communication with your doctor.

How do I make an appointment? The clinic is held Thursdays at 8:15 am to 12 noon at the Seymour Center on 2551 Homestead Road in Chapel Hill, NC and now the 2nd Thursday of the month at Central Orange Senior Center, 103 Meadowland Drive in HIllsborough, same times. Please call Yvette Hall at the UNC Center for Aging and Health at (919) 843-4096 to schedule an appointment. Please, do not call the Centers to schedule appointments.

This clinic is offered through a partnership between the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine, Center of Aging and Health and the Orange County Department on Aging.

Joyce Ellington is retired, but on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings her routine does not follow the relaxed pace of the typical retiree. By 9:00 a.m. she is reporting for duty at Efl and Cheeks Elementary School, where she is an RSVP-Senior Education Corps Reading Tutor (RSVP-SEC).

Students in the fi rst, second and third grades quickly recognize the gray-haired lady with the erect posture typical of the military. First grader Landon and 2nd grader Adam know her particularly well. They are her “regulars” who expect that she will be sitting down with them individually in a quiet corner of the media center and helping them extract meaning from the black letters in their reading books. Patient but fi rm, she pushes them toward acquiring the reading skills they need to keep up with their classmates. Students who miss these skills in the early grades often drop out of school without graduating.

Volunteering at school was a natural choice for Joyce, who had enjoyed the opportunities to work in education that came up in the course of her working career. The fi rst of these opportunities came in the United States Air Force, which she joined in 1971. The United States Air Force trained her as a dental technician and in 1975 sent her to Thailand, where she provided dental care and

instruction in oral hygiene to the children of military personnel and to children in government orphanages. She recalls vividly helicopter rides to the orphanages, often located in remote rural areas. The orphans would be glad to get rid of decaying teeth that were causing them pain. “There were no facilities,” she recalls. “We would stand them up against a tree and do the extraction. Then we would give them toothbrushes and show them how to use them.”

For another assignment, Joyce was retrained to training systems management. In this role, she was still involved with education – making sure that the Air Force work centers were providing recruits with educational opportunities that had been promised and that airmen were benefi tting from the training. This assignment took her to several locations in the United States and eventually to England, where she lived four years.

After leaving the Air Force in 1992, Joyce supplemented her military retirement with work in property management. Then in 2000 she decided to try substitute teaching in the Orange County Schools. At C.W. Stanford Middle School, the administration liked her work so much that they offered her a regular job as a teacher’s assistant working with physically and developmentally disabled children. She was also

given the opportunity to enhance her teaching skills by earning an Associate Degree in education.

Now fully retired, Joyce is glad to use her experience and training to work with youngsters who need extra help with reading. She acknowledges the important role that education has played in her own life, which began as a sharecropper’s daughter in rural Alamance County. “I have no regrets,” she says now. “The only thing I would do differently is join the Air Force at 18 instead of 26. Otherwise, I count it all joy.”

ABCs of SECWant to put a smile on a

child’s face when they sud-denly realize they like to read? Want to give a young person a chance to fi nish high school? Helping a child succeed often goes beyond the classroom and the parents; it takes a com-munity. Can you see yourself making a difference in a child’s life? Senior Education Corps can take you there.

Find out the ABCs of SEC at its fi rst community-wide gath-ering to be held Tuesday, Au-gust 21, at the Seymour Center. Topics will highlight volunteer impact in the schools, opportu-nities for training and the need for your involvement. Since 2000, SEC volunteers have served in schools and com-munity nonprofi ts that focus on helping young people have positive experiences in school and then in the future.

“This gathering will bring together educators, volunteer coordinators, and current and potential volunteers from both school districts for the fi rst time,” said SEC Coordinator Judy Mathias.

Seating is limited to the fi rst 75 people. To reserve your spot, please contact Judy Mathias by August 1 919-968-2057 or [email protected]).

SEC is an intergenerational partnership linking the tal-ents and experiences of older adults with the curiosity and energy of children of all ages. It is administered through the Orange County RSVP 55+ Vol-unteer Program, a branch of the Orange County Dept. on Aging. RSVP recruits adults 55 years of age and over and matches them with opportuni-ties in schools, nonprofi ts or government agencies. It re-ceives funds through Orange County Government, the Towns of Carrboro and Chapel Hill and the Corporation for National & Community Service.

Come to a Senior Center for “ONE-STOP SHOPPING”

Social workers at both the Seymour Center and Central Orange Senior Center are now able to help seniors apply for a variety of financial aid services - such as SNAP (Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program - formerly Food Stamps), Energy Assistance and Medicaid. They can also help people complete an application to reduce their Orange County property tax. Our Aging Transition social workers are able to discuss your questions and concerns about these programs in a confidential setting, and to complete the required paper work. Now, you do not have to go to the Department of Social Services (DSS). This is called, “One-Stop Shopping”. You go to the senior centers for programs, meals, exercises, classes, fellowship, trips, etc – now you can apply for special assistance, too! To find out if you qualify for any of these programs, call the Aging Transitions Help Line at 919-968-2087, Monday through Friday, 9 am – 4 pm to make an appointment.

Senior Net Volunteers NeededOpportunities for instructors and coaches are available for people with a basic

working knowledge of computer software and hardware. (Coaching positions as assistant can be used to train those aspiring to be instructors.) Prospective volunteers should also possess the desire and skills to share their knowledge with others in a “team based” and “user friendly” environment. Most courses are offered during the daytime. Additional offerings may take place in the evening and on weekends, if volunteers are available. Future offerings such as basic graphics, multi-media applications and genealogy will depend on the interests of the students and the skill sets of the volunteers. Contact Jim McGuire ([email protected]) for more information, or to volunteer.

TAR HEEL DEPRESSION GLASS CLUBThe Tar Heel Depression Glass Club was formed in the spring of 1984. This is a group of people who share a common interest in collecting and preserving the glassware of the American Depression era. Past programs have included talks on Heisey, Fostoria, and Cambridge; Jewel Tea, Mayfair, Fiesta, Hall teapots, Cloverleaf, and Fire-King jade-ite. Other times, however, the program will be about something related to the interest of a club member that is not specifically re-lated to collectible glass or dinner-ware. Some examples of these pro-grams have been talks on cast iron, children’s toys from the 1940s and 1950s, glass paperweights, Guard-ian cookware, and antique purses. Among the activities enjoyed by members are monthly meetings (1st Monday of the month), social out-ings and trips to glass manufactur-ing areas of the country (West Vir-ginia, Ohio, and Pennsylvania). RALEIGH LITTLE THEATRE – “THE BOYFRIEND”The Jazz Age lives on in this light ro-mantic spoof of 1920s musical com-edy. With its catchy tunes, period dances (including the Charleston) and winning sense of humor, it is a spar-kling, tongue-in-cheek 1920s romp in the spirit of “No, No, Nanette”. Writ-ten in the 1950s as “a new musical of the twenties,” this is still considered the most successful, and witty of the send-up musicals, with the style of earlier, lighter-hearted and more dis-arming days.Fee: $19 Town Commons Parking LotSun, Jun 10 2 – 6 pm

SNOW CAMP OUTDOOR THEATRE “PATHWAY TO FREEDOM”Come watch this amazing Outdoor Drama in Snow Camp. “Pathway to Freedom” is an exciting account of the struggles and heroism of the 1840s and 1850s along the “Under-ground Railroad” from NC to Indiana. Both individuals, and some of the or-ganized religions, fought slavery in the legislature and on the farms, while some led volunteers and free slaves to help escaping slaves to freedom. We will be having dinner before the performance. Be sure to bring money for dinner. You must register by June 15th.Fee: $18 Town Commons Parking LotFri, Jul 27 5:15 - 10:30 pm

Pastor Oglethorpe is determined to move his flock into the “modern world” by inviting the Singing Sand-ers Family to join him. The musical tal-ent is surpassed only by the side split-ting hilarity of the characters. Price includes lunch, gratuity and transpor-tation. Must register by July 13.Fee: $49 Town Commons Parking LotTues, Aug 21 11:45 am - 5:30 pm
