Message from the Head of School
Welcome to Tonight’s Sports Awards Dinner
As most of you know, I’m a huge supporter of sport and still have very early memories of passing a heavy leather
rugby ball around at the age of four. I never reached any great claims of fame as a sportsman but I loved the
participation and the team connection. I’m a huge fan of most sports particularly rugby, tennis, basketball and
cricket. It always amazes me when you think back to your childhood how much of your memories are sports related.
For me, it was the Christmas family cricket matches at the beach, watching the All Blacks playing the Lions at 2:00
am in the morning on a black and white television and having cheese toasties at half time. I think at the end of the
day the memories stay because they are not only happy memories but generally they involve family or special team
members that eventually become lifelong friends.
As the Head of School at Bangkok Patana School it is abundantly clear to me that sport is incredibly valued by the
staff and students. We have some of the finest sports coaches in the world and we have students that are dedicated
and passionate to improve their sporting skills. We have supportive parents who are always cheering from the side-
lines and enjoying the games just as much as their kids are. This year I got to see some outstanding football,
swimming, basketball, rugby, badminton, gymnastics, tennis and the list goes on........ My highlight of the sporting
season this year would have to be the amazing SEASAC wins for the Senior Girls’ Tennis team and the SEASAC Boys’
Basketball team. What a wonderful confirmation of the hard work, commitment and talent of not only our students
but our amazing coaching staff including Head Coach Daniel Ahl and coaches Jan Viratprasert and Danai Downer,
Simon Tyers and Coach Carlos.
There is no doubt in my mind that one of the reasons why our sports programme at Bangkok Patana School is so
strong is because of the dedicated, professional and passionate PE staff we have at this school lead so capably by
our Acting Assistant Principal Sports and Activities Mr. Andrew Tatam. Andrew has had an excellent two terms in
his important overall sporting leadership role. Special thanks to all of our sports administrators, grounds people,
and caterers and housekeeping staff; we couldn’t do it without you. I’m very sad that Coach Nicola our amazing
Head Gymnastic Coach is leaving us at the end of this academic year. She has been an inspirational coach since she
started at Bangkok Patana in August 2013. The gymnastic programme under Coach Nicola has flourished and the
results speak for themselves. We wish Nicola all the very best as she moves back to the UK. Congratulations to all
of our students for participating, aiming high and most important of all enjoying your sport.
Have an enjoyable night celebrating each other’s talent on and off the field.
Matt Mills, Head of School
Message from the Head of School Welcome to Tonight’s Sports Award Dinner
4
It is with great pleasure that I introduce you to
the very first web based Bangkok Patana
Sports round up and annual awards. This
follows on from our Sports Awards Dinner
which was held in the Sports Hall as a
marvellous evening of celebration and signifies
the conclusion of yet another successful sporting year for BPS teams within the school. In liaison with our students,
through our wonderful Athletics Council, we have chosen not to produce a paper booklet this year as an attempt
to be a little greener in support of many whole school initiatives already in place.
Our school teams have continued to thrive and compete upon all levels and we should be rightly proud of the
diversity and dedication of our sporting communities. We have participated in all BISAC Sports and nearly all that
SEASAC have to offer, as well as traveling to China for the Under 13 FOBISIA Games, enjoying FOBISIA Sailing and
Swimming and most recently, hosting a very well received Primary FOBISIA Games. Focusing upon these recently
hosted Games I feel that this event was a prime example of our community pulling together to produce a marvellous
and FUN event. Secondary PE staff gave up valuable time to support the athletics and umpire the Tee Ball. Feedback
from student athletes, coaches and parents alike was very positive and much of this was down to the hard work of
teaching colleagues, our wonderful buildings and grounds team and the ever supportive Sports and Activities team.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank all of you, the students, for dedicating so much time and committing
sincerely to the sports programme. Without our dedicated student athletes we certainly would not be in a position
to offer the huge range and depth that we are so proud of. To those students leaving Patana, the whole PE and
Sports staff would like to wish you well and we hope you continue to enjoy sport for many years to come.
At Bangkok Patana School, the sports programme gets a lot of support from the Foundation Board and the Senior
Leadership team which is very much appreciated. Our facilities are constantly praised by colleagues and this allows
us to host some wonderful and successful events. I would like to thank all of our parents for your invaluable support,
both to your children and to the sports teams throughout the year.
I would like to recognise a wonderful Sports and Activities Department Khun Nui, Khun Suly, Khun Champ, Khun
Korn and Khun Peach for all their support and help throughout the year. These people do a lot of work behind the
scenes that tends to go unnoticed and they ensure that your season runs smoothly.
Finally a huge thank you to all of our Coaches, both internal and external, who have contributed to the development
of our teams throughout the school. Without your involvement, expertise, enthusiasm and dedication we could not
sustain such a large programme. You give up a lot of precious time and we are all very grateful. Many thanks to the
following; the grounds staff, Khun Prawit and all the estates department, Khun Kaew, and her team for all their
support in organising our many overseas and local trips. Thanks also to the Transport Department for always being
flexible and cooperative.
Enjoy the following Sports Reports and get motivated for an even more action packed year from August 2016!

SEASON 1
JV Boys’ Volleyball
The season’s stats were 9 and 1. Nine straight wins, with the only one defeat being the BISAC final. A bitter end
indeed, to what was otherwise a great season. We had a considerable advantage with a lot of taller players this
year, especially with the new net height at Varsity of 2.43m. The middle blockers were able to adapt easily and
proved to be our most effective attacking option but at outside, we could not quite find the vertical to be as
effective. Throughout the season we spent a considerable amount of time on serve and serve receive to ensure our
setters were given plenty of good first balls.
We still struggled on serve receive and were almost undone by a single player from RIS at BISAC. Once we had
established positions, the season went just fine. Undefeated in the League and looking forward to BISAC. We made
the final and met TCIS, who we had comfortably beaten in the League. Although it appeared that the opposition
had a new outfit at BISAC, we still managed to win the first set 25 - 15. However, unable to hold our nerves, we lost
the second set 24 - 26 and then the final set. A thoroughly enjoyable season and I am sure that a number will move
onto Varsity next year, with a number of seniors graduating.

SEASON 1
6
JV Girls’ Volleyball
At the beginning of this volleyball season, our team was equipped with positivity and potential. Thanks to our
wonderful coaches, we became both physically and mentally stronger. The challenge began at our very first training,
where we faced our first match before having played together. Our ability to work well with one another proved to
be useful when we walked away from the match victorious. During the season we built up our team spirit and learnt
to encourage one another. Two weeks into practice, we asked our coaches if an extra day of volleyball training
would be possible. These Friday trainings soon became key to working on both our individual and team skills, which
were put to use in future games.
Throughout the season, we won the majority of our fixtures, but the losses were what really motivated the team to
stay strong and seek improvement. Keeping up our spirits in matches was crucial to being successful, as giving up
was never an option. We often began our games by losing the first set, but never stopped fighting to win the next.
With the determination for our team to improve, Mer (captain) organised additional trainings for our team over the
half-term holiday. This prepared us well for BISAC. We started the day by narrowly losing. Although this meant we
would not be able to compete in the finals, we quickly picked ourselves up to win the next games. We reached the
3rd/4th play-off, but unfortunately lost to a team who played better than us. We all ended the season proud of the
way we had played and with new friendships that will last for years to come. There is no doubt that each and every
one of us has grown individually and as a team. [Report by Florence Lacrosse]

JV Boys’ Football
This was the first season of Under 17 football and Patana fielded a very young team including many Year 8 and Year
9 players. It was a mixed season with highs and lows throughout. Patana secured the first silverware of the season
by winning the Shrewsbury Invitational Tournament without losing a game and only conceding one goal. In the
BISAC League games the boys defeated NIST for the second time this season but narrowly lost a close game with
Shrewsbury that prevented us from winning the league. Progress in a very tight BISAC tournament was going to be
difficult after a couple of key injuries and call ups to Varsity. Progress came down to the final group game where we
lost to eventual winners Trail. The overall finish of 5th was very disappointing and did not reflect the performances
throughout the season. Marching on together I am sure that next season will be more fruitful, ‘Howway The Lads’.

JV Girls’ Football
Perseverance and the determination to never give up, along with an attitude of giving your all for your teammates
can never be underestimated. Also never underestimate your opponent. This was certainly true of the Junior Varsity
Girls Football Team who finished their season with many wins and a few draws and 1 loss (friendly), as well as taking
home the BISAC Championship trophy. After winning the first game and drawing our 2nd in Pool A in the BISAC
Tournament, we faced a tough encounter with RIS in the finals. Through their commitment and team spirit the girls
managed a 1 goal win, winning the Championship Gold Medal game against Ruamrudee International School in
golden goal time. After dominating most of the game and having many shots on goal, either straight to the keeper
or hitting the crossbar, Emiko, with 2 minutes of extra time left, shot the winning goal over the keepers head. The
Patana girls dug deep in one of the hottest days we’ve had, and found the back of the net to take home the
championship. Thank you to the youngest team out on that park and for all your excellent display of sportsmanship
and discipline. Hope to see you all back for Season 1 JV Football trials 2016 and thank you to all who supported our
winning BISAC team.

Varsity Boys’ Volleyball
This season the team were very successful throughout all of their friendly fixtures, showing progress each week and
building together as a team. We had lots of new players this year which bought a new dynamic and lots of options
on court. Early in the season we attended friendship tournaments at NIST and ISB, performing well at both. We
attended BISAC at SHB where we came 2nd in our group, beating ICS and SHB to reach a semi-final v NIST. We
narrowly lost 2-1 to finish 4th. We then dedicated lots of training time to serve receive, attacking and transition
play in order to be a strong force at our home SEASAC in November.
The team showed much promise for the SEASAC tournament, with lots of experience in the team and some seriously
tall blockers. However, the enormity of the situation got the better of the lads and unforced errors were rife,
resulting in losses to CDNIS, ISY, RIS and NIST. This prevented us from qualifying for the semi-final leaving us to play
for 5th against MKIS. The boys chose to keep the game a close one, winning 3-2 (15-2 in the final set). Patana MVP
for the tournament was Jittarin (Win) Kanjanphairoj, dedicated captain and ‘go to’ player on the court.
Well done to all the players on the team, congratulations to those who won awards and best of luck to the departing
seniors on the team who have played an integral part in guiding others and leading by example on and off the court.
Also a special thank you to Win for being an aspirational captain, to Christian for being an incredible co-captain, as
well as to Mr. Thombs and Khun Champ for being tremendous assistant coaches helping to improve the skills of
every member of the team.

Varsity Girls’ Volleyball
The Varsity volleyball girls had a rocky start this season, facing losses at the NIST friendship tournament. However,
with a few remaining veterans and the new young, fit team - the potential for improvement was ever present.
Guided by the experienced, knowledgeable and strong Thai coaches - Coach Jang and Coach To - the girls went
through rigorous training to work on their serve receives and aggressive attacks before BISAC came around.
With so many new players on the team, communication was essential.
Our friendly games throughout the season were dedicated to building strong cohesive play on court, however we
met with many challenges along the way - one of them being our rivals ISB against whom we never could quite
finish off the game with success.
Until BISAC came around when the girls' hard work finally paid off. Starting off strong in the pool games but narrowly
losing a great game against NIST we came head to head with ISB for the 3rd place medal. After losing to them the
entire season, our determination shone through and we were able to finally defeat them in a tense match – bronze
medallists!!
Thus, we were in high hopes for SEASAC in November, putting in extra training over the holidays to make sure all
the progress made was not lost. Rocking up at NIST to compete, seniors Nina, Ellen and Emiri were filled with
determination to make something of their last season whilst rookies were ready to showcase all that they've learned
this season. Strong at the net and touch in back court - we were confident with the upcoming challenges from teams
around South East Asia. Meeting great success with lots of grit and determination, we qualified for the semi-finals
against CDNIS.
We started incredibly strong, smashing them in the first set. However, with a couple of points won from the other
team in the second set, our heads went down and the nerves overcame us. Unfortunately, our mental strength was
not strong enough to swing momentum back onto our side and we lost a very tough game.
Luckily, the girls were able to snag the 3rd place again, facing local rivals RIS and former SEASAC champions. The
frustration of our unfortunate semi's the night before was instead transformed into even more motivation - leading
11
to a successful 3rd place playoff and a great end to the season. Well done to MVP's Ellen and Nina. Finally, big thank
you to all the parents that came out to support us, and most importantly, thank you to our amazing coaches. Next
season is bound to be a great one.

Varsity Boys’ Football
Following a busy transfer window in the summer of 2015 the Patana Varsity team was always going to be in a phase
of transition. All of the senior pro's which the team had relied on the past few season had finally succumbed to the
lure of university and therefore moved onto pastures new. This meant that there was space in the team for a few
up and coming youngsters and fresh faces to the squad.
The season started with the NIST invitational tournament which actually turned out to be an example of what would
happen the rest of the season. One minute the team looked like world beaters and the next it was like they didn't
know how to play football. However with the team being full of youth and inexperience this was to be expected.
Moving onto the first major tournament of the season saw us at Ruamrudee trying to defend our BISAC title. Due
to some poor scheduling and our lack of consistency (which had evaded us the whole season) we lost our opening
game to Traill meaning that we would be unable to make the final. All credit to the team however as they put this
setback behind them and played some great football the rest of the tournament, finishing 3rd and leaving us to
ponder what could have been had we started better.
SEASAC followed the same pattern with us losing to NIST in the opening game. We bounced back however beating
UWC East (with a great comeback) and BIS Jakarta leaving us top of the table after day 1. Day 2 saw us with knowing
that 1 win out of our 2 games would see us through to the semi-finals and the boys were really up for it. We
dominated both games playing some great football however we ended up paying for our missed chances losing
both games and failing to qualify. It was another example of our youthful inexperienced team being unable to
punish teams and was a lesson learned that should see us stronger next year. The final day was the dreaded
'relegation' game against BIS Jakarta! The team absolutely blew BIS Jakarta away in the first few minutes and it
turned into a comfortable win meaning we will stay in the top division another year.
Overall it was a great learning experience for the players which looking ahead to next year should stand them all in
good stead. Unfortunately as with every year we will be losing our Year 13's who have been fantastic on and off the
13
pitch. However as one door shuts another one opens for all the other hungry players wanting to try out for hopefully
a successful football season in 2016!

Varsity Girls’ Football
This Varsity Girls Football team started this year with some new faces, and extremely high expectations. From the
start of the season the team worked hard to improve both physically and technically. During the initial stages of the
season training sessions focused on improving fitness after the long summer break and encouraging the team to
maintain possession of the ball. After only a week of training the ‘friendship’ tournament held at NIST was the
team’s first real challenge, a great opportunity early in the season to assess how we are looking compared to other
BISAC opponents and get lots of match practice. This tournament was a great success with the team playing some
fantastic football, winning the tournament quite comfortably; including thrashing local rivals NIST 5-0.
In the build up to BISAC the team continued to improve and record excellent results against local opposition,
including Harrow International School and International Community School. The team also participated at the ISB
‘Spirit Night’ competition, competing against the ISB Panthers in the exhibition match of the evening. Unfortunately
for the Panthers, Patana secured a win, abruptly silencing the ISB celebrations. In training the team was focused
and the girls were developing a great team cohesion, helped by entertaining games of football tennis and cross bar
challenge. The girls continued this winning form by securing back to back BISAC competitions, remaining undefeated
throughout the competition. BISAC CHAMPIONS! The girls deserved this win, demonstrating how comfortable they
are on the ball and composure in front of goal.
This victory provided the team with lots of confidence and high expectations as we approached SEASAC. This year
SEASAC was hosted by NIST, allowing lots of parental support which added to the electric atmosphere. The girls
started the SEASAC tournament very well, winning four out of four games on their first day; certainly setting a
precedent for other teams in the competition. During the second day of competition the team finished with the
group stages of the competition, aiming for a spot in the semi-finals. The final game of the group stages, between
Tanglin and Patana, was the decider for which team topped the group. After a very slow start Patana found
themselves 3-1 down in the first half. Unwilling to give up, and showing great determination and character, Patana
overturned the deficit and came out as 4-3 winners. This set up a semi-final against the Canadian School of Hong
15
Kong. Patana won this match 4-1, meaning we would meet Tanglin, once again, in the final. Unfortunately this time
Tanglin would come out of a very close game on top, winning by a cruel golden goal. Despite not receiving the
colour of medal we would have preferred the girls should be so proud of themselves, finishing second out of seven
strong teams is a great achievement.
We would like to thank every member of the varsity girls’ team for their hard work and dedication throughout the
season. The team developed an unbreakable bond and demonstrated a level of maturity and character which they
should be extremely proud of. It has been a very enjoyable season, with plenty of fond memories. The future of
Patana girls football looks exciting!
Good luck to all our leavers who are heading on to even greater things.

Varsity Golf
The 2015/16 SEASAC Golf competition took place at the challenging Nilai Springs golf and country club just outside
of Kuala Lumpur. With the tournament taking place in the Malaysian rainy season the ground was very soggy which
made ball striking and scoring very tough. Fortunately the rains stayed away on the competition days and after the
first day of competition the girls were in 3rd place and the boys 4th, with team captain Nadoln Narongdej 2nd in
the individual competition after a fine 76. With a stiff breeze on the second day making conditions even tougher,
much improved rounds from Conor Kelly and Gerry Hall saw the boys improve to 3rd place overall, the first time a
Patana Boys team has received a medal at SEASAC golf. Doln just missed out on an individual medal finishing 6th.
An outstanding lifetime best round of 84 from Patricia Hall saw the girls consolidate their 3rd place in the team
competition and propelled Patricia to an excellent 3rd place in the individual competition. There were also medals
for Patana students in the Handicap competition with Malachi Frye finishing 2nd in the boys and Tina Kong in Year
7, taking part in her first competition for Patana, securing 3rd with a personal best score.
There were further successes for the Patana Golf Team at BISAC with Win Viravan winning the Under 11 boys
competition and Tina Kong finishing second in the girls Under 13.
With the majority of the Patana team in Year 10 or below the future looks bright for the Patana Golf Team.

Varsity Cross Country
This year was the first in which Patana has entered a cross country team at SEASAC. It has been a steep learning
curve for everyone involved but there are some talented and committed runners at the school who will certainly
do well in the future.
In term 1 the students competed in the BISAC cross country at ISB and there were some great team and individual
performances with Ross Nicholson winning the boys varsity and Laura Worthington and Sri Hollema finishing 1st
and 2nd respectively in the girls varsity. Although we didn't have individual winners in any of the younger age
groups, our teams did get 1st place in the girls Under 11, Under 13, Under 15 and boys Under 11 too, a great
achievement!
Our preparation for the SEASAC was hampered by Sri Hollema and Ben Ayrle collapsing during their training and
Clara Boucher damaging her ankle in the weeks leading up to the competition in Hong Kong. They put on a good
show though with most students running impressive personal times in both the relay and individual races at SEASAC.
Unfortunately this year our team were not in contention for either the individual or team medals. A lot of the
runners were very young though (including Lily-Anne in year 6!) so they have plenty of time to improve further and
I am hopeful that over the next few years we will develop into a very competitive team.
A big thank you to Clara Boucher and Patrick Schlaeppi for stepping into the SEASAC team at a late stage when other
students had to pull out.

JV Boys’ Basketball
With this being the second season of the league format before the main BISAC tournament, the team had an even
greater understanding of how important each game was, and how this would affect which pool we would be placed
in.
Thus the pressure was really on from the start and the team delivered right from the off. Playing a strong NIST team
at their home court the starting 5 of Kris, Kent, Max, Kyle and Seongmin helped us to a big lead from the off and
the regulation win was never in doubt, with the final score being 41 – 29.
Next up was Shrewsbury for our first home game. After building a big lead we started to play as not to lose instead
of to win, and this nearly cost us. Though we manage to hold our nerve down the stretch to win by one point, with
a final score of 50-49. However the lessons we learnt in this game would help us later on in the season.
An away mercury ruling win against RIS 47-17 helped us move to a 3-0 record. The team was lead in scoring by Judo
Ekwarin and Akshil Jhaveri.
This was followed up by our only loss of the league season against a very strong ISB team who made it all the way
to the BISAC finals. Despite playing well we lost 56-44.
Our final group game saw us finish with a league record of 4-1, beating for the first time in 4 years a well-coached
Harrow team 53 – 41. A balanced team performance was led by Malachi Frye, Handel Gonzales and Anil Dharmaseri.
This year the BISAC tournament was again at ASB. We won our first pool game against Harrow 56-34, which was
the perfect team performance and a great way to start the day. This was followed up by our only loss of the day
against eventual winners TRAIL 51-37. Beating RIS again with a mercy ruling, meant we reached the 3rd/4th place off
against our old rivals ASB.
SEASON 2
20
A closely fought game where no team lead by more than 6 points went down to the final play of the game, with BPS
coming out winners 42-38.
This meant a well-deserved final placing of 3rd. We couldn’t be more proud of the team, they always gave 100% on
the court and as coaches we cannot ask for more than that.

JV Girls’ Basketball
The Junior Varsity Girls’ basketball team had an exciting and challenging season that really brought them together
as a team and as friends. The team’s schedule at BISAC was challenging, resulting in some gruelling games. However
the girls rose to the challenge and performed with strength and skill throughout the day. There were many highlights
including three pointers from Lisa, Athena and Pinn and a sensational game against ICS which saw ICS unable to
score for the entire first quarter and our girls winning the game by 20 points.
In their game against ISB the girls proved that tiger spirit isn’t just once a year. It was a close match throughout with
ISB in the end taking the lead in the fourth quarter. One ISB player subbing on said ‘I’m scared,’ this was because of
the constant pressure from our girls. They played with such determination and heart that coaches of the rival teams
were complimenting them on it. The girls showed great character and a fantastic team spirit which led them to
steadily improve both individually and as a team throughout the season. The future for BPS JV girls’ basketball looks
bright as there are lots of talented players who will still be about next year to hopefully improve on our results this
year. Special mention should go to departing seniors Christina (Kit) Zellerbach and Hsin-Ju (Lisa) Lo. Both girls have
been fantastic role models for the younger players and will be a great loss to the team.

Varsity Boys’ Basketball
Our previous season finished with a SEASAC finals loss to NIST. Although a silver medal is great achievement it left
our players thinking about what else they could have done in order to claim that gold medal. As coaches, we were
incredibly lucky to have nine of those players return for a chance of redemption; nine players who wanted to take
that next step and achieve the SEASAC gold.
We all had high expectations but the season didn’t start as we wanted it to. The skill level was there, but team
chemistry was lacking, resulting in a number of losses early in the season that really should have been wins.
However, as the season progressed, the team began to get together not only trusting each other on the court but
also enjoying their time together off it. Unfortunately, our BISAC tournament was as competitive as ever and after
a couple of tough losses the highest we could finish was fifth. This kept our players hungry though, training harder
than ever in preparation for SEASAC. Boosted by strong school support from the home crowd our SEASAC weekend
was nothing short of spectacular, reaching the finals again for a rematch against NIST. This time there was no
mistakes and no one was left wondering what else they could have done. A beautifully controlled game from start
to finish was concluded with the presentation of gold medals for our players.
Special mention should go to departing seniors Charn, Alan, Christian, Devyn and Gilbert. All of them have been
fantastic role models and leaders for the younger players and have been a huge part of the BPS Basketball program
over the years. Honours:

Varsity Girls’ Basketball
The BPS Girls’ Varsity team fought in a very tough pool including ASB and Shrewsbury at BISAC. We started off well
with a victory against NIST and our second game was against the eventual champions ASB. A great double-team
defensive effort on their two star players got their coach startled when we were up by 18 points. In the end we lost
(47-52) because the constant defensive intensity tired us out and we couldn’t answer their following pressure. After
a slight loss to Shrewsbury, we came back strong against Harrow (34-30) to win the match for 5th place.
After practising almost every weekday, the team got stronger and more confident. At first the girls were concerned
that SEASAC would be difficult to survive, but hard work and persistence took the girls to the next level and BPS
became a team to fear. After strong wins against NIST, CDNIS and Garden, we also had to deal with an unnecessary
loss against RIS (40-48) in the preliminary round. This would also be the team to face in the bronze medal match
and the girls were excited to have the opportunity to finally earn a medal. A variety of pressure defences and more
effective teamwork on offense resulted in a 48-33 win.
Thank you Eshana Pussegoda for greatly using your exceptional team building and motivational skills as part of this
team and we wish you a happy future. The Varsity Girls team has an encouraging future, full of potential, so keep
working hard!

Swimming Team 2015/16
The TigerSharks team have had another successful year. The top team award and numerous individual awards at
ISB SwimFest in November was followed by some excellent swims and the overall team award at our own Feeding
Frenzy International meet in December attended by 500 athletes from Asia!
In January 52 athletes swam at FOBISIA in Phuket winning Top Team as well as three age group trophies at the
meet. Fourteen Patana swimmers competing in the Thai Nationals in individual events. Ton Kiangsiri won a Silver
medal in the 17-18 years 50m Breaststroke and Coach Bank a Bronze in the Open Ladies 50m Breaststroke. Chloe
Burkill, Max Stockdale, Prin Chantarangkul and Lachlan Dibbayawan all made finals. The 12-13 year Girls 4 x 200m
Freestyle relay won an historic Silver medal.
In the SEASAC event in Kuala Lumpur the 13-14 year Boys won their age group with the Girls age 13-14 and 15+
team third in their age groups. Overall the Girls team were third and the Boys second with TigerSharks a close third
in the overall meet. Many personal best times set by the team.
BISAC 2016 saw both the Senior and Junior teams crowned Champions. The junior title was the first time since 2009
that BPS had won this event. All but two age group trophies were won by the team.
A small team also went to Dragons Den in Singapore finishing 5th overall at UWC EAST with Chloe Burkhill and
Daniel Fuchs winning age group trophies.
This year just under 50 school records have been broken by the team as well as many personal times achieved along
the way. A very well done to the whole team and the coaching staff. Good luck to all TigerShark leavers and a special
farewell to Millie, Kate, Mel, Sophie, Ton and Anselm for their dedication to the team over the years.

JV Boys’ Rugby
After a season of hard work on the training field and some knock backs at Spirit night at ISB, the team was only
quietly confident upon arrival to the BISAC tournament at ISB. Their first game proved difficult against Harrow, but
their superior pace in the form of Federico Perren, Oscar Matijasevic and Michael Nunbhakdi proved too much for
Harrow, they took their first game 24-12. The second game in the pool was against Ruamrudee against whom we
had only drawn earlier in the season. Solid scrums from Alex Mackinnon, Sebastian Bailey, John Broadbent and
Joseph Wood and some good set piece play from the backs, Duncan Kerr at scrum half, Federico Perren at fly half
and Tan Sriprai at centre saw them win comfortably 17-5.
Improving with every game they scored 4 tries against Shrewsbury, using moves learnt at training and some solid
tackling from Sebastian and Alex. Their fourth pool game against ISB was very close, ISB put pressure on the BPS
kicks and they scored a runaway try to win the game by two points 12-10, however BPS had scored the most tries
in the competition putting them top of the pool, to play Harrow in the final. Confidence was sky high at this point
and BPS kept the ball well, spreading it wide for Oscar, Michael, Henry Zoeller and Federico to score the days highest
point victory, 51-5. Congratulations to Skipper Jack Hickey and Vice-captain Joseph Wood for their determination
and encouragement on the field. Also to Duncan who showed that size doesn’t matter when you have a great
sidestep, Killian Kleemann who proved he can play in many positions, and Tan who set up many tries by passing at
the right time.

JV Touch
The start of any Junior Varsity season is a challenge in regards to team dynamics. You have older athletes
disappointed not to have earned a Varsity spot and other enthusiastic and somewhat less experienced ones. This
year’s dynamics were no different and becoming a team was much a challenge for all.
The team found early success in BISAC league play with clinical and one-sided victories over NIST, Harrow and
Shrewsbury before heading into the Winter Holidays. On return, the team continued to dominate league play with
victories over ISB and RIS. These 5 wins ensured we finished top of the league heading into the annual BISAC
tournament.
The last week leading up to the BISAC tournament the team was determined to learn from our mistakes at the
previous week’s ISB “Friendly Tournament” where the girls finished a disappointing 4th. The team demonstrated a
renewed focus lead by our captain Luka Hekkelman. Our new focus was on doing the basics better and executing in
attack from the 5 metre line.
At the BISAC tournament the team cruised to pool wins against Harrow and NIST executing the basics better and
scoring some well-constructed scores from the 5 metre line. More significantly, the team was coming together and
the girls were now playing for each other, and with these two wins we were assured a spot in championship game
against ISB. The championship game had all the usual pre-game tension and nerves. The team dominated
possession early and were denied what looked like an early score. ISB responded with a score and the team suddenly
found ourselves on our back heals defending. We were also faced with an early serious injury to Katy Boardman
which impacted our focus. It was not to be our final and the hosts ISB went onto victory.
The team has athletes that will push for Varsity spots next year and it is hoped all will continue to get involved in
Patana Sport.

Varsity Rugby
With the inclusion of a new coach, as well as a mix of new promising talents and experienced players in the squad,
we were all very excited for the rugby season. After a first very strong display at home against Shrewsbury (77-0),
our first tournament was the Royal Bangkok Sports Club Invitational - a first chance to bond as a team and also to
observe areas to improve on for the season. Narrowly losing to the Barbarians in the Semi being the only low point
of the weekend, we made a strong statement by comfortably beating our arch rivals NIST (24-0) and finished 3rd.
Players who stood out in this tournament include Ross and Lucas as they displayed great potential in their first ever
rugby tournament.
The following tournament was the NIST Invitational. Our first game was against the Barbarians, and narrowly lost
(again). We then won our remaining games against Thepsirin (39-0) and Lycée (22-0) to finish 3rd. ISB Spirit Night
was a real test for us, as we were missing some key players in our team and we had a record of never beating ISB
at this event. However, we managed to beat Harrow (38-0) and break the curse by overcoming ISB (22-0) in front
of a big crowd, whilst playing 10s rugby.
Before the Christmas break, we hosted the BPS Invitational. South Island School of Hong Kong was our first
opponent, and after being dominated in the first half our late tries were not enough to get the win (12-19). We then
went on to defeat RIS (42-0), ASB (40-0) and Lycée (21-5) and met SIS in the final. At this point we had many injuries
and SIS’ power and skills proved too much for us (0-29).
After a long winter holiday, we came back and had our last friendly game against ISB at home, where we played like
we were still on holiday, eventually defeating them 17-0. The following weekend was our BISAC tournament, and
again we did not play to our full potential, coming away with scrappy wins against Harrow (19-5) and Shrewsbury
(22-7). The final was against NIST, who seemed to have improved since we last played them. With a large crowd to
support us, the game had high intensity from the kick-off, as we conceded the first try. However, the tables were
turning and we managed to score 3 back to back tries, before conceding one just before the final siren (21-12). This
victory was well-needed as it raised our confidence 2 weeks before SEASAC.
Because of last year’s results, we were drawn in a difficult pool for SEASAC. Our first opponent was UWC East and
it was an imperative to win this game to get to the Semis. However, we played some inaccurate and scrappy rugby,
30
overwhelmed by the high tempo of the game (7-19). Our second game was against the title holders, Tanglin. Even
though we had most of the possession and had some great attacking platform, we were never able to add the
finishing touches to score. Tanglin, on the other hand, pounced on our mistakes to score (0-26). Our next objective
was 5th place and we needed to win all our remaining games to achieve this. We went on to beat CDNIS (19-10)
and GIS (29-7) to make the 5th place playoff against KLASS. In front of our home crowd, we played great 7s rugby
putting all that we had learned into practice to score some amazing tries (19-10), claiming the Plate trophy.
This season was very enjoyable and exciting, as we had the chance of playing lots of competitive and high quality
rugby. I would like to thank Coach Graham, Mr Tatam and Coach Yeah for guiding us through this adventure and
helping us love the game that is rugby. I would also like to congratulate the rookies Lucas, Markus, Harry, Ross,
James and Kulit for stepping up to the challenge and improving massively throughout the season. Good luck to the
Year 13s, it’s been a great adventure. It’s been an honour playing alongside you legends and to have been your

Varsity Touch
Once again the Girls’ Touch team has been particularly strong and competitive within Bangkok finishing as BISAC
Champions for the 2nd year running! It was a very close tournament where the girls ended up facing ISB in the final.
We had played them 3 times during the season losing all three times!! However the girls performed when it
mattered and ran out 5-3 winners!! The girls were buoyed by this achievement and went into SEASAC full of
confidence and raring to go. Having been relegated to Div 2 last year the girls were highly motivated to perform
well and get back to Div 1. We coasted through the group stage and semi-final, to arrive in the final to play CDNIS.
Unfortunately, unlike the BISAC final where the girls performed when it mattered, the team were unable to pull out
a performance. The girls huffed and puffed but lacked any real quality (that they had showed earlier in the
tournament) losing comfortably to the deserved winner CDNIS. Despite our disappointment this has been an
excellent team effort, with very strong contributions from the entire squad. The girls showed great character and a
fantastic team spirit to steadily improve both individually and as a team throughout the season. The future for BPS
girls touch looks bright as there are lots of with many talented players still here next year to hopefully improve on
our results this year.
Special mention should go to departing seniors Nina, Kate, Ellen and Donna. All of them have been a pleasure to

Varsity Boys’ Tennis
After last year’s successful season and with 6 of last year’s team still available to play squad selection was a relatively
easy task.
The boys worked hard from the first week establishing a good work ethic and further developing team spirit.
The first event of the season was an invitational tournament which NIST, SHB and RIS all took part in and these
matches also doubled as league matches – the boys were victorious in all three and followed this by beating ISB and
HIS to win the BISAC league title.
Post-Christmas as ever tournaments and matches come thick and fast and we were all delighted when Leo and
Donald reached the BISAC Under 19 singles final which Leo won.
The BISAC team event this year was hosted by ISB and an event where although we had finished runners up in four
of the previous five years was something we had not won since 2009. The boys all turned up with their A game and
we duly despatched the opposition and comfortably won the title.
SEASAC as last year was hosted at Patana which although means the team is not able to travel away together which
is the highlight of most Varsity seasons does mean the team are used to the courts and conditions which has a
massive benefit.
As defending champions we were looking to compete well and make it tough for the opposition. The group stage
went well with four of the five matches won putting us through to a semi-final with CDNIS who we beat 4-1 to set
us up with a final against UWC D.
Leo and Donald were electric winning their matches 8-0 to put us into a strong position which we were not able to
capitalize on and the other three matches slipped quickly away leaving us with a 3-2 defeat and the silver medal.
Nevertheless a fine effort.

Two stalwarts of the tennis teams for numerous years Tey and Kan graduate this year and both have had many
memorable moments with the undoubted highlight being their two clutch wins in last year’s SEASAC event. We
wish them both well and will remember their contributions for many years to come.

Varsity Girls’ Tennis
After the success of the team last year and the loss of three key players the team this year started with one key goal
and that was to remain unbeaten all season.
With the BISAC league finally introduced as compulsory at Varsity level the girls were able to get play regular
competitive fixtures before the tournament season started and these provided valuable match play opportunities.
All league games were won which placed us as top seeds in the BISAC team event which this year was hosted by
Harrow school. The girls performed well all day winning all four matches very comfortably to win the title for the
5th time in 6 years.
The BISAC singles which had preceded the team event was won by Balloon who played outstanding tennis all day
against girls many years older than her, Moniqa and Emiri also won their group but lost in the quarter final whilst
Clara playing in the B draw did well to reach the final.
As always the culmination of the season is the SEASAC event which for the 2nd year running was hosted at Patana.
We were looking for a 6th straight triumph and having decided to make a couple of tactical changes after the BISAC
event we were confident in our chances.
The group stage saw 5 wins out of 5 to qualify for the semi-final where we comprehensively defeated UWC East 5-
0 to reach the final against Bangkok rivals NIST. The girls were fired up and outplayed the opposition winning 4-1 to
extend their championship winning run.
No individual player can ever be bigger than the team but Emiri comes pretty close – having played Varsity tennis
for the last 7 years and been part of 6 SEASAC winning teams plus numerous BISAC winning teams at all age groups
Emiri has set an example to many players both on and off the court of how to compete and do your best at all times.
We all wish her well as she graduates this year and she will be missed a great deal.

Another softball season has come to a close. The Junior Varsity Boys’ Softball team won some games and lost others.

JV Girls’ Softball
Enthusiastic ladies from Year 9 to Year 13 came together to play softball. Some old hands to softball and some who
decided to play for the first time. For one season we came together to learn from one another and to try and play
the best softball ever! Three wins gave the girls confidence leading up to BISAC, however, it really does depend on
what happens on the day. We lost to Shrewsbury for second place despite a win four days earlier. This resulted in
3rd place. The girls can be proud of their achievements taking bronze.
Being part of a sports team teaches us a range of skills. From communication, encouraging one another when things
are not going to plan, celebrating highs and lows, being humble when we win and gracious in defeat. Being part of
a Patana team enables one to develop character and strength. I would like to thank the girls for an enjoyable season
and hope you will be ready to 'batter up ' next year.

Varsity Boys’ Softball
A young team, with hopefully a few very fruitful years ahead, comprised the Varsity Boys’ roster this season. A
couple of veterans lead the team through a very successful League, finishing top. Losing only one game all season
was a confidence booster, but beyond NIST and ISB, the domestic competition was very weak this year. We had to
compromise positions on the outfield, in the absence of enough natural infielders. We battled to find the best
combination in respect to the positions for the players and once we found it, the team settled. We did make a
number of defensive errors in the field both at SEASAC and BISAC and at Varsity level, one or two fielding errors will
cost you dearly. Batting again this year remained inconsistent, running up large scores against weaker teams
through fielding errors, becoming simple fly balls to stronger teams.
Under pressure, we had to rely too often on the same few batters, who were able to hit line drives and hard
grounders. Depth in batting and ability to hit line drives is an area that we definitely need to rectify next season.
Consistent pitching was again a huge strength for us and numerous times, kept us in the game. However, the final
results speak for themselves and I am sure the boys were a little disappointed. However, if you do not perform
when it counts, then you will always fall short of victory. Despite this, it was definitely a fun season, with plenty of
highs and lows to look back, but above all, we all thoroughly enjoyed the motivational speeches from our most
distinguished VC. We say goodbye and wish all the best to Toby, Christian, Andre and Manav.

Varsity Girls’ Softball
The Varsity Girls Softball season was a challenging one, yet one of growth and success. The team began the season
with a disappointing performance in the NIST "Friendship Tournament" and early season losses in league games.
However, the team re-grouped and focused on limiting errors defensively and focusing on hitting fundamentals on
offense. The team had some lopsided wins against ASB and Shrewsbury prior to heading to Singapore for the
SEASAC Tournament. SEASAC was a positive experience for the girls beating RIS, ISY, UWC East in order to gain a place in a semi-final v
UWC East. The team were given strict instructions when batting and all knew their roles in the field. However,
nerves got the better of them and a very dry game finished 1-3 to the opposition. This left a bronze medal game v
NIST. The girls were fired up to go home with medals and this determination paid off with a 13-7 dominant win! The team returned from Singapore confident and focused on performing strongly at the BISAC Tournament hosted
at BPS. In the BISAC tournament the team opened up with a loss against a strong ISB team and went on to defeat
Harrow and Trail by lopsided margins. With two wins and one loss the team finished second in their pool and would
find themselves playing for third place against old foes NIST. In the third place game the girls would not be outplayed
on home soil and cruised to a 9-2 win over NIST and a bronze medal.
The team was led by seniors Ellen, Abigail, Nina and Captain Satu Penttila. Moniqa Nielsen led our offense with her
bat and our defence was able to shut down teams by outstanding pitching by Yu Rim Hong.

This year’s Junior Varsity Boy’s badminton team consisted of Win, Leo, Tony, Ishan, Chester, Arnav, Float, Kan, Ninja
and Pound. Our squad performed very well during the season, with good results in our friendly matches against
other teams. As we continued to train throughout the season, our drop shots became more refined, our smashes
became more deadly, and our clears became more powerful.
We ended up placing 2nd at BISAC, which was a welcome improvement over our 3rd position in the last two years.
Overall, it was a very successful season with our players enjoying the practice sessions and games with good fun.

This year’s Varsity Boys’ team had the goal of winning SEASAC Division 2 after being relegated to the second division
in 2014-2015. Against an increasingly competitive second division, our boys’ skills came through and they achieved
their goal. This was not without some dramatic moments. After losing the first 2 of 5 matches, BPS needed the next
three wins for the title. Panarin’s 17-17 third set and subsequent win was dubbed the most exciting badminton of
the year. In addition, congratulations to Alex, Win, Taisho and Mickey for ensuring the overall score was balanced
in our favour. Not only did the boys achieve their goal of winning Division 2 they also represented BPS admirably by
winning the Sportsmanship Award. Well done boys for representing BPS and bringing us back to Division 1!
At BISAC the boys put forth a terrific effort but ultimately lost to a stronger RIS team in the championship. Placing
second amongst the field was a very good showing. Every single member of the team showed improvement in the
face of challenging opposition. Their play was a testament to the commitment that was shown through the season.
Om, Andreas, Win, Panarin and Ake should be given a special mention for their contributions as they graduate this
year. All have left very large shoes to be filled in the coming year both in terms of playing excellence and
sportsmanship.

Varsity Girls’ Badminton
This year’s Varsity Girls’ team had a great season which represented a very strong foundation upon which to build
further in 2016-2017. At the culminating SEASAC tournament in Singapore, the girls represented BPS both as strong
players and as excellent ambassadors of the game. During the pool stage, BPS beat high-quality opposition including
CDNIS, RIS, ISY, and UWC East. In the semi-finals, a fourth place finish was the final outcome, but not for lack of
effort and focus. Congratulations on an excellent effort at the tournament, and for Nita and Rung for winning the
Doubles 1 strongest team award at SEASAC. Well done also to the entire team for representing BPS admirably by
winning the Sportsmanship Award.
At BISAC the girls put forth a terrific effort but ultimately lost to NIST in the championship. Placing second amongst
the field was a very good showing. Jasmin’s victory against her NIST nemesis and Janice’s nail-biter final symbolized
for me the growth that all of the members had throughout the season. The improvement was visible and the
commitment by all players should be celebrated. A special mention to Rung and Janice who will not be with us on
the courts next year. Their leadership, skills and the cohesion that they brought to the team will need to be matched
by others. This will not be a small task. Well done girls for a successful year!

Gymnastics
The Patana Gymnastics Team have attended a record number of competitions this year with 10 in total; three
overseas trips and seven local meets, three of which we’ve hosted ourselves. With a large depth of squad we
regularly enter teams at every level of competition with good success, particularly this year for our boys.
Across the major competitions of the year – FOBISIA, SEASAC and BISAC - the Gymnastics Team have taken an
impressive 14 podium finishes in the individual all-around competitions for the boys and 10 for the girls, and a total
of 19 trophies in the team competitions with 8 of them being championship titles. Many more medals and ribbons
have also been won in individual apparatus finals where event specialists have their chance to shine.
In Term 1 Patana held their first in-house competition, readying our team members for a busy year of competition.
Later we hosted the 3rd FOBISIA Gymnastics Invitational Championships and our higher-level girls also had the
opportunity to attend the UWC Dover Invitational in Singapore. With participation numbers and the level of
gymnastics within South East Asia increasing year on year it was a tough term of competition with the girls’ Level 5
team and boys’ Level 2 Senior and Level 3 juniors giving standout performances.
Term 2 was again a busy time with the ISB Black & Gold Competition in February, the new Senior Division SEASAC
in Singapore in March and the Moose Games competition in April where many of our Development Squad gymnasts
had the opportunity to compete for the first time. Term highlights included winning a team trophy at every level
and every age group at the ISB competition with every boys’ team winning gold, Level 3 boys winning SEASAC Gold
and Rebecca Russo winning Bronze in the all-around competition at SEASAC Level 6, and taking home the overall
team championship trophy at the Moose Games.
We have already, in Term 3, attended both BISAC and Junior Division SEASAC in Hong Kong with our Y1/Y2 Grading
Day and the NIST Invitational competition still to come, giving our younger gymnasts plenty of opportunity to show
off all their hard work in the gym. And it certainly has not gone unnoticed with our Level 2 Junior and Senior girls
winning their BISAC competitions and taking 1st and 2nd spots in their individual all-around competitions, and our
Level 3 Juniors also taking gold for the team with two individual all-around podium finishers. For the boys the
45
success continued with Level 3 boys finishing more than 10 point above the second place team, a phenomenal
achievement at the end of a triumphant year for them.
The future looks bright, with the combined determination and efforts of our spectacular gymnasts, wonderful
student-coaches and committed coaching team, and a wealth of talent emerging from our foundation stages and
recreational programme the sky is the limited for the Patana Gymnastics Team.

Varsity Water Polo
It was another great season for both the BPS Under 19 and BPS Under 15 Water Polo Teams. This year was
challenging with a young Under 19 team and almost a brand new Under 15. However, throughout the season our
Water Polo teams dedicated themselves to the sport.
At BISAC, our teams performance was great especially for the Under 15 team who played outstanding polo against
ISB in what became a highly contested match. They managed to win their game in the last 4 seconds with a goal by
Oak. This showing from our Under 15 shows the depth and talent in our ranks.
Under 19 played ISB for their final match of the season in which ISB won. However, for the last 2 quarter BPS
managed to stop the ISB juggernaut from scoring anymore. Which was a fitting result for a dedicated bunch of
students, who have been in the program for a number of seasons now.
