concept
Vail, Colorado
By combining the human needs and physical changes throughout each season, a unique connection is made. It not only blends the surrounding natural environment with the interior, but evokes a sense of place for patrons. This is achieved through fluid movement of space, materiality, and lighting.
site information:
The condominiums are adjacent to The Four Seasons at Vail Resort, which will be purchasing the first floor to expand the current spa. Anpassen Salon and Spa will be fully functional and accessible to both Four Seasons Vail guests and condominium residents and guests.

A custom recycled glass chandelier accentuates the center of the room and sets the luxurious tone of the spa. Rich wood flooring and stone walls salvaged from the existing Four Seasons Vail Spa are used throughout to create a contrasting, natural space.
design features:

A front yard is a hybrid of aesthetics and functionality. Meant to protect the home, it aims to provide a welcoming, attractive appearance. By providing a welcoming, inspiring space, students and faculty will find a “sense of place” that not only showcases their talent, but allows them to connect, grow, and blossom.
The diagrams show the
progression of adding pathways
and natural elements to a front
yard’s landscape
. Originally built in 1912.
. The building was acquired by Columbia College
Chicago in 1997 and now houses the school’s
music department.
. The artistic, cultural, and education traditions of
Columbia college continues today.

Throughout the space, polished concrete is used in main circulation spaces for the heavy traffic use. Carpet tiles are utilized in classrooms, practice rooms, and offices for comfort and acoustical purposes. In the performance room, wood flooring and panels are used to maximize sound absorption and quality of sound. Collaboration and lounge spaces are defined by artificial grass to mimic the exterior environment and bring in a pop of color.
. Royal Grass is made of 100% polyolefin
materials (PWP and PE), without a
polyurethane or latex coating
. 100% Recyclable
. Felt wall panels are used to absorb
sound from musical instruments and
large classroom settings
. Haworth Enclose Glass line the main

The reflected ceiling plan follows the same form as the floor plan, but utilizes dark materials to make the high ceilings appear lower. Recessed cans and ceiling mounted luminaires are used for general ambient lighting. Sparkle is achieved through mirrored pendants to reflect light. On the mezzanine level, task lighting is found throughout the studio space with 6’ suspended luminaires over the workstations.

Inspiration for the ceiling detail of the performance space is drawn from the exterior facade. 6” wood beams are used to define the leaf venation pattern. Starting from the right exterior wall, the pattern grows outward toward the furthest interior wall of the performance space. The pattern is achieved by rotating wood beams 30-45 degrees, resulting in randomness throughout the design.
