Senior Phase of
Education
2021 - 2022
Year 10 Senior Pathways
• Year 10 students will complete a Senior Education and Training Plan (SET Plan) –Term 3 – subject selection online and SET Plan interview.
• Students will be aiming to attain their Queensland Certificate of Education or Queensland Certificate of Individual Achievement
• Students can select from a wide range of subjects and courses. These include General, Applied Subjects as well as Vocational Education and Training courses.
• Students can also select from external training opportunities such as TAFE at School, University Early Access programs, School based apprenticeships and traineeships
ATAR- Australian Tertiary
Admission Rank
• The ATAR is the standard measure of overall school achievement used in all other Australian states and territories.
• The ATAR is expressed on a 2000-point scale from 99.95 (highest) down to 0 (ATARs less than 30.00 will be expressed as “30 and below”).
Subject ScalingScaling is necessary so that student results in
different subjects can be compared fairly.
If a student of a given ability studies a less challenging Maths subject they might get a 90 / 100.
But if the same student studied a more challenging Maths subject they might only get a 80 / 100.
However, if scaling works, they should end up with the same scaled score.

• Certificate II in Visual Arts and Applied Visual Arts in Practice
• Certificate II Sport and Recreation/Cert III Fitness and Applied Sport and Recreation

How will VET be included in the ATAR?
Each VET qualification level will have a single scaled score
that can be included in the student’s ATAR
E.g. Cert III in Hospitality and Cert III in Lab Skills will have the
same scaled score, regardless of duration or content
A scaled score for a VET Diploma will be higher than a Certificate IV, which in turn will be higher than a Certificate III
HOW TO CHOOSE A
PATHWAY
• ATAR/University Pathway– You are prepared to put in maximum
effort with regard to your studies over the next two years.
– You have demonstrated that you are academically driven (A’s and B’s).
– You are resilient and possess the strategies to cope with the high demands of academic subjects.
– You want to go to university straight after school (or you’re pretty sure you will).
HOW TO CHOOSE A
PATHWAY
• Non-ATAR Pathway/Applied and VET pathway (full time work, Traineeships, Apprenticeships, TAFE etc.) – You definitely don’t want to go to
university straight after school or perhaps ever.
– You struggle to put in the effort needed for academic subjects.
– You find academic stress difficult to manage.
HOW TO CHOOSE
SUBJECTS
• Overall, pick subjects that you:
– Like
– Are good at
– Are prepared to put effort into
– Are prerequisites for university if applicable
– Meet the school prerequisites for the subject
HOW TO CHOOSE
SUBJECTS
• Satisfying the English Prerequisite depends on university and course at university– QUT/USC
• No prerequisites except for teaching (QUT only)
• Cert IV in Tertiary Preparation• Some certificates• Diplomas
– UQ• Cert IV Tertiary Preparation• Some Diplomas
QCE• To meet QCE requirements, a student must
accrue 20 credits from learning options. Different types and amounts of learning contribute different amounts of credit to the QCE.
• The literacy and numeracy requirements for a QCE.
