AI, Troupe Armen-trout, leave my out-standing legacy to the tenacious Victoria Ar-

mentrout, otherwise known as Torsepower.

I, Sukriti Adhikari, with a carefree mind and an insomniac body, do hereby bequeath the fol-lowing items: To Binita Pokhrel, I leave you the title of being the only Nepali in the entire school. NA-MAS-TE! I leave you all the conversations and the rant ses-sions in the library, eating your food when I was just too lazy to get something and most of all being the sisters from another mother. I also leave you all the movie marathon and yelling at the characters every time some-thing didn’t go like we wanted to. Lastly, I leave you all the best wishes and all the upcoming cel-ebrations. To Julexus Cappell, DOWN WITH THE BROWN, GURL!! JK.. But not really. I also leave you with randomly rapping to Birthday Song by 2 Chainz or Started From the Bottom by Drake. I also leave you all the SIPA memories and that duck restaurant. But lastly I want to leave with a reminder that ‘You is kind, you is smart and you is important’, so pursue that jour-nalism, graduate early, travel the world and love life more than you already do. To Luke Gibson, my favorite co-editor, I leave you to be the scary editor so that every-one turns in story on time. I also leave you a box of earl grey and herbal tea so that you won’t freak out much during the deadlines. To Anthony DingDongDuong, I leave you to deal with the sports photographers next year. I also leave you to be in time and know where you are supposed to meet up and charge your phone on time.I also leave you all the asian jokes and the pho, we never had. Thanks man, but not really. To Austin Coffey, I leave you all the awkward conversations that we have had every time you picked me up for distribution. But hon-estly, I will be waiting the day till you can be a future duke. To Ce-lia Ehrenpreis, I leave you all the weird faces and all the time that you have helped me with the page and my articles! To Nishat Jamil, I leave you your poll days. To the upcoming photographers for Newsstreak, I leave you to stand in the sidelines and try to capture the moments. I also hope you try to find more stories than just take a picture. Finally, I also leave you to deal and edit the 500-1000 pic-tures that you will take during a football game or any game. To the upcoming staff of Newsstreak, I leave you Kibler’s sarcastic com-ments, the friends that you will make, the stress that you will come to get over in a month and overall the support and the build-ing block that is Newsstreak.

following items: To Stuart, the kid gets it all.

Just plant me in the dang garden next to the stupid lion. JK BRO, that’s from Secondhand Lions. But really though, I leave every-thing to you. So yeah, basically everything. Except my room, that stays mine.

To Izzy, I leave my legacy. May future underclassmen forever want to be you. I also leave sitting in your closet for hours and con-templating life, maxing out my credit cards (aka Gold and Plati-num), your transformation to being able to say the word “sex” by the end of the cross country season, and skipping school on the last day before Christmas break to take your change to the Coinstar in Food Lion. And last but not least, I leave you Graham, as promised. If you do not live for this will, I’ll punch you in the you know where.

and feeling like American Idols for finally making Honors Choir, the boogie-woogie bugle boy from company B, the Sexy Bet-sies, and THE TURKEY WALK. I also leave ranting in groups about how much we hate musical, being obsessed with Friends With Ben-efits, having secret snacks, and crying at the Asian life insurance commercial with Heather. A-root, a-toot, a-toot diddle-a-da toot.

To Larkin, I leave our exten-sive emoji conversations and be-ing two of the only sane people in our environment class.

To Larkin and Celia, I leave the neighborhood! I’ll only be at JMU, but make sure you hold down the fort while I’m gone.

To Josh, I leave the lunch-room, since you’ll be the only one there next year. Have fun with your iPhone and not being harassed daily by Sarah and me. Don’t forget to pay the lunch la-dies next year, you won’t have me to split my sandwich with you! Also, I leave you the spirit of Mar-garet Thatcher.

Remember that a good snack can make any class bearable. To the rest of the students at this school I would like to leave with a word of wis-dom. Remember that while you may think that getting over 20 likes on the selfie you just posted is an accomplishment, most of us could care less. A real accomplish-ment is working hard toward a high school education and having the opportunity to walk across the stage at graduation know-ing you did more than partake in throwbackthursday. Thank you.

SI, Zaid Sabah, would like to leave some advice. For all the freshman com-ing in please enjoy high

school and make the most out of it, time in high school will fly by and you won’t realize it. For other students I would like to say, high school may seem rough some-times and you might get a feeling that tells you to quit, but fight through and you will be success-ful. I’ve been in the U.S. for three years, spent them all in HHS, made all kinds of new friends and met amazing people. Basically, best time of my life.

I, Addison Shepard, being of reminiscent mind and anxious body, do hereby bequeath the fol-lowing items: To Shannon, I leave Mr. Rats.To Kendall, I leave the infamous black tip and all of the knights who say “Ni”. Also, I leave you with the memories of not leaving school during chemistry and not going to Mr. J’s for food when you first got your license. To Bianca, I leave all of the con-stricting, spontaneous hugs that you have given me in the past four years of high school. Just kidding, I’m keeping all of those. You’ll always be my ferret. To Ju-lexus, I leave our gang of gatos and our car rides around town at the most random times. Most importantly, I leave you with the knowledge and faith that you have what it takes to be success-ful in this world. I know that you have the heart and the determi-nation to accomplish your goals and I want you to know that you have my support. You will do great things with your life. Thank you for being one of my best friends.

SENIOR ISSUE - B7NewsstreakTheMay 24, 2013

Varsity track athlete Akia Mor-ris has been blowing people away since her freshman year. She acts as the not-so-secret weapon for the high school in every meet.

Throughout high school, Mor-ris ran the 100m, 200m,4x1, 4x2, and her speciality, the 55m dash. She holds the school record in all five of these events, and broke the all-city/county records on May 1 at a regional meet at Spotswood when she ran the 100m in 12.1, and the 200m in 25.3. She has gone to states several years in a row and continues to conquer her competition.

After countless impressive performances, Morris was bom-barded with letters from almost every school in Virginia. She narrowed her choices down to Concord University, University of Richmond, and University of Kentucky, and officially chose to become a member of the Concord

track team. Her new team is ranked high

in Division II, and is entering a rebuilding phase that they hope will develop an imposing threat for their competition.

Morris is anticipating the transition from high school to college athletics.

“I’m excited to travel around the world and see the best of the best from high school going into college,” Morris said.

Morris constantly trains to make sure that she stays in shape and maintains her potential. Her everyday routine consists of core workouts, weight lifting, and time trials.

“I practice hard and physically know that I’m going to be okay. I try my best; that’s all I can do,” Morris said.

Even though Morris is going to miss winning district every year with her high school track team, she is looking forward to partici-pating in the rebuilding process of Concord’s track team and suc-ceeding at the college level.

After moving from Missouri his sophomore year, Hayden Rutherford was quickly recog-nized for his athletic skills. He started as safety for the varsity football team, and was an essen-tial tool for each game.

Even though he has lived in Missouri and D.C., Rutherford wanted to return to his home state of Colorado for college. Earlier in the year, he attended

a football camp at the Colorado School of Mines, and the coach immediately expressed interest in his skills.

Colorado School of Mines is a Division II school and is consid-ered to have one of the best foot-ball teams in their conference. They hold several records, and Rutherford hopes to contribute to their future success.

“I’m looking forward to meet-ing the team and seeing what it’s like to play at the college level,” Rutherford said.

Rutherford is planning to red-

shirt his freshman academic year, and then begin playing on the field his sophomore year as an outside linebacker.

To stay at his best, Ruther-ford exercises every day by lift-ing weights and running. He also plays basketball and flag football outside of school to maintain his stamina and fast pace.

Rutherford plans to major in petroleum engineering along with his football career.

“I’m glad I can continue to play. Football has always been re-ally fun for me,” Rutehrford said.

Senior athlete Jonas Zim-mermann has excelled at run-ning since his freshman year. He is part of the cross country and has ranked high in its 5k races at almost every meet. For the in-door and outdoor track teams, he participates in the mile, two mile, and 800 races.

“Long distance is my speciality because I get better the longer I run. I don’t have much speed, but I can keep a quick pace for a lon-ger period of time,” Zimmerman said.

Throughout high school and his multiple seasons, Zimmer-mann has had a set schedule for training to maintain his best per-formance. He runs all year long, and only takes breaks during the one week period between sport seasons to let his legs relax. Since running puts a lot of stress on the body’s joints, Zimmermann does cross training at least once a week. Biking helps to relieve some of the stress that running causes, but still allows him to train.

Zimmerman plans to attend Bridgewater College as a mem-ber of their track and cross coun-

try teams. The school is in Divi-sion III and is ranked high in the ODAC conference. Last year, the Bridgewater track team placed a close second to Liberty Univer-sity in the finals.

“Next year I’ll definitely be challenged. There will be runners who are a lot faster than me. I’ll have to work harder to be as com-petitive as everybody else,” Zim-mermann said.

Early in the school year, the head coach of Bridgewater’s track team e-mailed Zimmermann and expressed interest in his skills. With Zimmermann’s impressive records and history, he automati-cally made the team. He was in-vited to the campus to meet his future teammates and automati-cally felt at home.

“Being with the team will give me an immediate group of friends in college. [The team members] are always hanging out, and they’re really accepting of any newcomers,” Zimmermann said.

At Bridgewater, Zimmermann is going to run either the 5k or 10k distance at his meets for the track team and participate in the usual 8k run for their cross coun-try team. He plans to major in Physical Training so he can con-tinue to participate in the sports world after college.

As senior athletes begin to say goodbye to the sports that they have been playing for the last four years, there are a select few who are able to continue playing after high school. Ebonee Stroth-er has committed to play soccer at Averett University in Danville, VA next year. Strother has been a four-year starter for the high school team and will continue to play forward at Averett next year.

“I picked [Averett] because they have a really good athletic training program and that’s what I’m looking to study,” Strother said.

Strother has taken various vis-its down to the campus and on one occasion even got to meet the team. The team is mostly interna-tional, with many of the players

coming from Sweden, Finland, and Germany. She believes that she will fit in well with the girls.

The one negative to going away for school is that Strother will miss her family and friends.

“I’m going to miss Harrison-burg because that’s where my family is, but I’m ready to expe-rience something new,” Strother said.

Although Strother is not sure if she is going to be a starter yet or not, she is very excited about going to college and taking her game to the next level.

Strother will finish out her se-nior year with a very impressive resume that includes three years as a member of the All-District team, two years All-Region, and one year Honorable Mention All-State. She hopes to keep her level of intensity the same in college, if not increase it.

Music throughout my high school career has seemed to have, in my per-spective, a more emphatic cultural change than I can remember in any other of my grade or middle school years. With the increasing-ly omniscient nature of the internet, obscure artists are wildly more prevalent, along with the appearance and cultural permanence of one hit wonders.

Recently this year we’ve come to see The Harlem Shake take an interna-tional identity as a con-

tinually parodied and sati-rized dance in a variety of circumstances, each with a different element of goofi-ness or creativity than the last. Rick Astley’s “Never Gonna Give You Up” was another that garnered in-ternet fame long into my high school career, along with Gangnam Style’s sto-ried appearance when ev-eryone and their mother took to heart their duty to create and distribute on-line their truly hilarious and uniquely different par-ody of PSY’s original music video.

And while Internet has accumulated an empha-sis on my cultural identity

over my high school career in terms of music, standard album releases highlight major elements and chron-icle my progression both through puberty and young adulthood.

Some of my favorite bands include Fun, their original album, The Black Keys, Cake, Cage the El-ephant, The White Stripes, The Fratellis, Jet and most-ly recently RJD2 and Wolf-mother. All of these bands possess life spans that have lasted since the inception of my highest level of pub-lic schooling.

Cake pushed me through my freshman year, and with their hybrid rapped and

sung melodies, they gave me a comedic and satiric perspective on the stress of my first year in high school, and the beginning and end of many month and week long “relationships” defin-ing the infancy of my hope-less romanticism.

The Arctic Monkeys turned me on to British cul-ture and the fruits of their media abroad my sopho-more year. I discovered shows that had profound effects on my cinematic tastes like Misfits, Sherlock and Dr. Who. When inspi-ration peaked, the Mon-keys were a rapid fire and upbeat light through the writing of my “first” film,

and the end to a long term relationship that provoked its creation.

My junior year I found solace in the Black Keys during my most stressful and college pertinent time in high school as I prepped for a deluge of standardized tests, and even provided a new album that year and my first concert I ever at-tended. That summer, as I grew closer to my girlfriend of now almost a year and a half, and through the pro-duction of countless films, short stories and small businesses, Fun proved to be an indelibly memorable sound track.

Finally, Cake made a

monumental comeback for the duration of my senior year of high school, and harmonized quite perfectly with what I can confidently call my best year of high school, providing a begin-ning and end score to my narrative in Harrisonburg High School. While my tastes in music are specific to who I am as a person, I feel every senior can understand how their past and present favorite bands chronicle their high school career and sing an individual tune for each stage through this four year adolescent culmina-tion called high school.
