SCOUTING

Ed Creech was named Pittsburgh’s Director of Scouting on November 20, 2001. In his tenure with the club, the Pirateshave selected three pitchers and two position players with their first pick in the annual First-Year Player draft, includ-ing righthander Bryan Bullington, who was the number one overall selection in 2002.

Creech spent three seasons (1999-2001) as an assistant to Kevin Malone, who was the Los Angeles Dodgers' General Manager, before joining thePirates in his current capacity. With Los Angeles, he was responsible for overseeing all amateur scouting and was in charge of the Dodgers strategyand selections in the annual June draft.

Prior to joining the Dodgers, Creech spent the 1998 campaign as the Director of Scouting for the St. Louis Cardinals. In that role, he was respon-sible for selecting outfielder J.D. Drew with the fifth overall selection in the 1998 June draft. Ed was also the Scouting Director for the MontrealExpos (1994-97) and had been part of that organization since ‘73, when the Expos selected him in the 2nd round of the draft.

Creech played six seasons in the Montreal farm system, advancing as high as the Triple-A level. He retired as a player after the 1978 season andwas out of baseball until returning as a coach with Calgary (Expos' Rookie) in 1982. Creech also managed in the minors for five years (1983-85,1990-91) and was an area scout from 1985-1991. He served as the East Coast scouting supervisor for the Expos from 1991-93 before assuming theduties of Scouting Director in February of 1994. Ed was born on 10/30/51 in Columbia, SC. He received his bachelor’s degree in Mathematics from Mercer University in Macon, GA. Creech resides

in Moultrie, GA, with his wife Mary Ann and his children; daughter Kacey (18) and sons Matthew (13) and Nathaniel (6).

Joe Delli Carri was named Pittsburgh’s Assistant Director of Scouting in November of 2006. He joined the Piratesscouting staff on November 7, 2005, spending the 2006 season as the East Coast Supervisor.

Prior to joining the Pirates, Delli Carri spent 10 seasons in the New York Mets scouting department, working as aSouth Regional Supervisor (2001-2005) and an Area Supervisor (1996-2000).

Originally selected by the Mets in the 38th round of the 1989 June draft, Joe made his professional debut with St. Lucie that summer. He spentfive seasons in the New York minor league system before being traded to Detroit on 2/17/94. An infielder during his playing days, Delli Carri retiredfollowing the players strike in 1995. He returned to the New York organization and served the Mets as their Double-A Hitting Coach at Binghamtonduring the ‘95 campaign before joining the scouting staff in 1996.

Joe was born on 1/16/67 in Bronx, NY, and graduated from Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, NJ. He received his bachelor’s degree inSociology of Law from the University of Pennsylvania. Delli Carri and his wife Cindy have three daughters; Allison (6), Julia (4) and Paige (2).

Assistant Scouting Director

Rene Gayo is in his fourth season as a member of the Pirates Scouting department. In his role, he coordinates andsupervises the club’s International Scouts in attempts to sign players on the global level - with a heavy emphasis inLatin America.

Prior to joining the Pirates, Gayo spent five years (1999-2003) as the Director of International Scouting/Latin American Crosschecker with theCleveland Indians. His tenure with the Tribe began in October of 1993 as an area scout, a position he held for eight seasons (1994-2000) mainlyin South Texas and Louisiana. When his role on the international level began to expand during his tenure with the Indians, Rene was responsiblefor signing Danys Baez, Willy Taveras and Jhonny Peralta among others.

Gayo played one season of professional baseball in the Cincinnati Reds organization as a catcher before turning his attention to scouting and play-er development. He served the Pirates as a part time scout for four years (1989-1992) and the Texas Rangers in 1993 before joining the Indians.Rene is of Cuban descent and was born on 9/21/62 in Miami, FL. He was raised in Chicago and currently resides in Alvin, TX, with his wife Leticia

and son Manny (13). Gayo attended Gordon Technical High School in Chicago, IL, where he lettered in baseball, hockey and speech & debate beforegoing on to earn an economics degree from St. Mary’s University in San Antonio, TX. Rene also played baseball for two years at St. Mary’s.

DEVELOPMENT STAFF

The 2007 season marks Brian Graham’s 26th year in professional baseball and his sixth season over-seeing the Pirates Player Development department. He joined the club on December 3, 2001. In his role,Brian oversees all aspects of the Pirates Player Development system, which includes the coordination of

instruction, the signing of free agents, staffing, budgets, player movement, affiliate relationships and the Latin American field oper-ations. In addition, he installed and implemented a system of Individual Player Plans which provides instruction and resources toinsure the individual development of every Pirate player.

Under Graham’s tutelage, the Pirates minor league teams have finished with a combined winning percentage above .500 in fourof his five seasons. Heading into spring training this season, 24 of the 40 players (60%) on Pittsburgh’s 40-man roster came fromthe club’s minor league system - the highest percentage among all major league teams.

In 2002, the Pirates were honored as the Topps’ Baseball “Organization of the Year.” The farm teams combined to finish with a.571 winning percentage (399-300), four teams participated in the post-season and two clubs (Lynchburg and Hickory) won leaguechampionships that season.

Prior to joining the Pirates, Brian was a major league coach with the American League Central Division Champion Cleveland Indiansfor two seasons (1998-1999) and with the Baltimore Orioles in 2000. Graham spent the 2001 season as the Field Coordinator forthe Florida Marlins.

In nine seasons as a minor league manager in the Cleveland Indians organization, Graham’s teams finished above .500 each year,compiling a 704-491 (.589) record. Graham managed eight consecutive playoff teams and was a staff member on 10 straight play-off teams (eight as a manager and two as a big league coach). He was named the Carolina League's Manager-of-the-Year in 1991,the “Best Managerial Prospect” by Eastern League Managers/Baseball America magazine in 1993 and Minor League Manager-of-the-Year by USA Today's Baseball Weekly in 1996. Brian also managed in the Dominican Republic Winter League for Aguilas (1991) andhas also coached and managed in the Arizona Fall League (1993-94).

Originally selected by Oakland in the fourth round of the 1982 June draft, the former second baseman played five seasons inthe minor leagues with Oakland, Milwaukee, Detroit and Cleveland. He also played baseball and football at UCLA. Brian was amember of the 1978 Fiesta Bowl team and finished his collegiate career as UCLA’s all-time leader in hits, stolen bases and runsscored. Graham was elected to UCLA’s Baseball Hall-of-Fame in 1996.

Brian was born on 4/9/60 in San Diego, CA. He attended UCLA for four years and received his Bachelor of Arts degree inBehavioral Science from National University in San Diego. Graham resides in Cranberry Township, PA, with his wife Karen and threechildren; son Jack (14) and daughters Kelsey (13) and Kendall (5).

Senior Director of Player Development

Jeff Banister is in his fifth season as the Pirates Minor League Field Coordinator after spending the pre-vious four years as the Field Coordinator at the Major League level. The 2007 season marks Banister’s22nd with the Pittsburgh organization.

Originally selected by the Pirates in the 25th round of the 1986 June free agent draft, Jeff began his professional playing careerwith Watertown. He compiled a .247 batting average, 37 home runs and 204 RBI in 515 minor league games. Banister made hismajor league debut and only big-league appearance with the Pirates on 7/23/91. He owns a career major league batting averageof 1.000, having singled off Atlanta's Dan Petry at Three Rivers Stadium in his only big-league at bat. Jeff went on to miss theentire 1992 season due to right elbow surgery. He has battled bone cancer and osteomyelitis, in addition to having seven opera-tions on his left ankle and leg as a teenager in 1980.

Banister served as a player/coach with Carolina (AA) in 1993 before beginning his managerial career with Welland in the NewYork-Penn League in 1994. He moved on to manage Augusta (A) in 1995 and Lynchburg (A) for 1996 and the first half of the1997 campaign. His Augusta club captured the 1995 South Atlantic League championship. Jeff replaced Marc Hill at Carolina forthe remainder of the 1997 season and spent the entire 1998 campaign at the Mudcats helm. In his five seasons as a minor leaguemanager, Banny has compiled a 299-330 record (.475). He also managed in the Hawaiian Winter League in 1995-96, with hisHonolulu club winning the championship. In 2004, Jeff managed Lynchburg for two weeks during a managerial change.

Jeff was born on 1/15/65 in Weatherford, OK. He is a graduate of LaMarque (TX) High School and attended the University ofHouston. Banister resides in League City, TX, with his wife Karen and two children; daughter Alexandra (12) and son Jacob (5).
