“At the time of writing this for our February snowshoe day we had to cancel and
reschedule the January snowshoe day due to weather, snow and freezing rain.
So, in having said that we have decided to plan for two snowshoe days in February. Two
days will hopefully guarantee one nice day and who knows maybe two nice days.
Mark your calendars for Day 1 Tuesday February 20th 10 AM at Forest Lea and
Day 2 Monday February 26th at 10 AM will be at Shaw Woods
We snowshoed part of the intermediate trails at Forest Lea completing about 2 km. The
trails are flat with some very small hills. Very scenic and lots of woods. They were
challenging due to the snow and freezing rain we had a few days ago, a crust was on the
snow. I am pretty sure by February 20th we will have new fallen snow and those trails will
be great. There are ski trails and the snowshoe trails are separate.
Shaw Woods trails are packed but slippery right now due to the weather conditions we
have experienced. There is definitely crusting and some ice. I am hoping for snow which
will help with the trails.
Directions for Forest Lea: from Pembroke take Highway 17 to the stop light at Forest
Lea Road and turn Left onto Forest Lea, travel all the way to the end, it is a dead end, turn
right to the parking area and the trails are there.
From Petawawa take Highway 17 to the stop light at Forest Lea and turn right onto Forest
Lea, travel all the way to the end, it is a dead end, and turn right onto the parking area and
the trails are there.
Directions for Shaw Woods: 2065 Bulgar Road North Algona Wilberforce
Need to know: there is ample parking and there are public outdoor washrooms at both sites. Snowshoe trails are separate from the ski trails at Forest Lea. Be prepared to spend about one to two hours snowshoeing. If there is freezing rain, a snow storm, or heavy snowfall the snowshoe day would be
cancelled. If you have concerns about the weather call the Centre in the morning to see if
the snowshoe day will proceed as planned.
Car pooling is a possibility, or if you are unsure of the directions you may
be able to follow in your own car. Please call the Centre for details of car pooling.

SENIOR FITNESS
EXERCISE DAYS
A recent report from the
Renfrew County District
Health Unit, “Injuries
caused by Fall among older adults in Renfrew
County & District”: What we know about fall-
related injuries and what we can do to prevent
them” has been published.
Renfrew County & District has the highest rate
of fall-related emergency room visits and
hospitalization in Ontario. Falls are the leading
cause of injury among older adults . Our
population of older adults is increasing,
therefore it is likely that there will be an
increase in the rate of fall-related injuries.
Prevention is the key and making a plan is a
good way to reduce the chance of
falling. To download/or obtain a
blank prevention plan visit:
www.rcdhu.com and search Fall
Prevention Plan
Phone 613-735-8666 Ext. 666.
Email [email protected]
In the meantime– you can take action to
decrease your risk of falling:
1. Find and remove hazards in your home
2. Exercise for strength and balance
3. Manage medication and their side effects
4. Have the right safety and protective gear
5. Have regular checkups
6. Eat healthy meals and stay hydrated
The full report is posted on the bulletin board in
Activity Room 3 ( Computer room/back
entrance).
