Welcome!

Dear Parents and Students,

By now I am sure that you have looked at your student’s 3rd quarter report card. Please con-

tinue to encourage your child to strive during the 4th and final quarter. Ending a school year

strongly helps students with their cumulative GPA. The counseling department will continue

working on schedules for next year, AP exams, SOL tests, scholarships, and graduation status

with the LCHS students this month.

Summer School Credit Recovery Program

Summer school will offer multiple verified credit opportunities for students to remediate defi-

ciencies. Credit recovery sessions may be taken by students who have just failed a class and/

or who have failed the SOL assessment. Students must attend the full 14 day session in order

to meet the requirements. The registration link is scheduled to go live on Friday, May 1, 2015.

Seniors will complete a survey using Family Connection in May that will provide the counse-

lors with their post-secondary plans along with any scholarships they received so far.

Finally, as the 2015-2016 course selection process closes out this month, please continue to

work with the teachers to make sure that your student’s schedule is appropriate. Increasing the

communication this year will help make the transition into next year easier.

The final transcript for seniors will be sent on June 19th.

This information will be gathered by the student completing the senior survey in Family Con-

nection May 19 & 20th during Government class.

Northern Virginia Community College Registration

Heritage High School is hosting a NVCC information/registration

onsite Saturday May 9th at 10am. Students are encouraged to at-

tend if they plan to attend NVCC in the fall.

NCAA Clearinghouse

In order to participate in NCAA athletics in college, students must regis-

ter with the NCAA during their senior year in high school. Students are

encouraged to register on-line. A “Request for Transcript” form must also

be filled out and turned into the guidance office as part of the filing pro-

cess. Students should also meet with their counselors to review NCAA

approved core courses.

LCHS Scholarship Awards Ceremony

Loudoun County will be hosting its annual scholarship awards ceremony

for seniors on Friday, June 5th, 2015, 9am-12:00pm, in the auditorium.

This ceremony is an opportunity for LCHS staff and scholarship spon-

sors to present awards to the 2014 LCHS student scholarship winners.

One of the most notable changes will take place to the front of our school to add handicap accessibility via ramps to both sides of the main entrance. The front of the building will NOT be altered in any way. The columns will remain standing. The included sketch is a draft of the proposed change to the main entrance. Construc-tion should begin shortly after school breaks for the summer.

Seating will be in "the round" on the stage

and will be somewhat limited. All tickets

are $7.00 and will be sold at the door be-

ginning 45 minutes before curtain.

Viola (Rachel Coughlin) is shipwrecked and comes ashore in Illyria. She loses contact with her twin

brother, Sebastian (Parker Havens), whom she believes to be dead. Disguising herself as a young

man under the name Cesario, she enters the service of Duke Orsino (Brody Brown). Duke Orsino

has convinced himself that he is in love with the Lady Olivia (Maddy Wheeler), whose father and

brother have recently died. Olivia has vowed to mourn their deaths and forego the company of men

for seven years. She, therefore, repeatedly refuses the Duke's marriage proposal, or accept any suit

of love, the Duke included. Duke Orsino then uses 'Cesario' as an intermediary to profess his pas-

sionate love before Olivia. Olivia however, quickly forgets about the seven year vow falls madly in

love with 'Cesario', as she does not realize 'he' is Viola in disguise. In the meantime, Viola has fallen

in love with the Duke Orsino, creating a comic and uncomfortable love triangle between Duke

Orsino, Olivia and Viola.

Rounding out the play in a variety of comic sub-plots are the bombastic, hard partying Sir Toby

Belch (Ryan Bultrowicz), his ridiculous pawn, Sir Andrew Aguecheek (Ryan Chapman), the mischie-

vous maid Maria (Morgan Bronson), the clown, Feste (Holly Rucker) and the preening steward, Mal-

volio (Drew Van Dyke).

Please come join us for Twelfth Night, as many of our finest senior actors take their final turn on the

LCHS stage.

We hope everyone is enjoying the better weather and getting some time

outside. There is still plenty going on for the remainder of the school year.

* The raffle drawing for graduation parking and seating has been extended through the senior awards/BBQ.

This event will take place on Friday, June 5th.

* We are still looking for volunteers for the All Night Graduation Party (ANGP)

* Purchase a lawn sign for your graduate. The cost is only $30, and supports ANGP

May 7th: 2015-2016 LCHS PTSA Board elections. If you are interested in running for the 2015-2016 PTSA

board, please let us know, so we may place your name on the ballet. Elected positions are: President, Vice

President, Treasurer, recording secretary and volunteer coordinator. We need three members to serve on the

nominating committee. Information on the board and nominating committee positions can be found in our by-

laws posted on the PTSA web page.

May 27th: Spirit night from 3 pm – 9 pm at the Leesburg Chik-Fil-A. Dine in or drive through, just make

sure to let them know you are supporting LCHS.

May 15, 22 and 29: ANGP tickets and graduation raffles will be sold during all lunch periods outside the

cafeteria.

June 5th: Senior Awards and picnic. The PTSA provides the picnic part of this day, and we are seeking

someone to chair this event. This is also the last chance to buy graduation raffle tickets and when the drawing

will be held. See the PTSA site for more details.

June 17th: All Night Graduation Party (ANGP). ANGP is the single largest event we host for our student

body each year, and a fantastic way for graduates to celebrate their great achievement in a safe environment!

We are in need of volunteers to fill a variety of positions. It is LCHS tradition that parents of undergraduates

actively support this party by volunteering so that when your student is a senior, you can rest easy. In other

words, you are “paying it forward.” Please contact the ANGP committee ([email protected]) to find out

how you can help, or sign up on the LCHS main page. Please remain up to date with PTSA events on our

Website (http://www.loudoun.k12.va.us/site/Default.aspx?PageID=21590). The site continues to be updated

Back Pack Buddies

Loudoun County High School

Back Pack Buddies is a program created by Feeding America to provide food for the weekend to

students who are in need. LCHS has started this program at our school. Each week, we will

provide a grocery bag filled with 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, 2 dinners and 2 snacks for weekends.

Don't let hunger be a worry for any student in our school community. Please lend your support to

this much needed program and help make a difference in a child's life!

We are in the process of filling our Loudoun County High School Pantry for the Backpack Buddies

program. Consider supporting this program by: Donating food from our “preferred items” list be-

low. A collection box will be located outside Loudoun County’s main office the first week of every

month!

Reminder from our

Our school’s health clinic specialist/registered nurse is Shannon Nerantzis. She works in the

health office each day from 8:15a until 4:15p. School staff can contact the school resource nurse

at any time for advice or emergencies. Health office personnel (HCSs and nurses) are not al-

If your child has any significant medical needs, please notify the Mrs. Nerantzis even if the school has been notified in pre-vious school years. If your child has asth-ma, diabetes, seizures, life-threatening al-lergies, or other medical conditions, you and the physician will need to complete a form so the school can understand and ad-dress your child’s needs. These forms are available on the Loudoun County Public School (LCPS) website. These forms must be updated each school year.

AFTER-SCHOOL

ACTIVITIES AND SPORTS If your child has diabetes, an epinephrine

auto-injector, an inhaler, or other emergency medica-

tion at school, please notify the teacher/sponsor that

your child has the health concern. Also notify the

health clinic specialist/nurse 2 weeks prior to the

event. The clinic is closed after dismissal and the

HCS/RN is not in the building. Arrangements need to

be made to have medication available and to train

staff. It is strongly suggested that middle and high

school students carry their own inhaler and/or epi-

nephrine auto-injector for quick access to medication.

For students to carry an inhaler, the physician must

complete and sign the “Asthma Action Plan” giving

his/her permission for the student to carry the inhaler,

and the parent and student must sign page 3, the

“Parent/Student Agreement for Permission to Carry

for Permission to Carry an Inhaler”. For students with

an epinephrine auto-injector, the physician will need

to sign the bottom of the “Allergy Action Plan” and

the parent and student will need to sign page 2 under

“Agreement for Permission to Self-Administer and/or

Carry Epinephrine.” For students with diabetes to

carry any of their medical supplies, the diabetes form,

Part 4: “Permission to Self-Carry and Self-Administer

Diabetes Care,” will need to be signed by the physi-

cian, parent, and student.

If your child is ill because of a conta-

gious disease such as the flu,

strep throat, chickenpox, etc., it

would be helpful to note the

reason for the absence when

you call the absentee call-line.

This will help the school take measures to

know the extent of the disease and reduce

its spread.

Students who have fevers should be kept at home un-til free of fever for 24 hours. Students who do not feel well should stay home. When students come to school ill, they not only are unable to participate fully in class, but they may also infect other students with their illness. A parent or guardian must deliver any medication (prescription or non-prescription) to the school office or health office. Students may not transport any med-ication to or from school. Parents are responsible for picking up any unused medication. Medication re-maining in the health office at the end of the year will be destroyed according to state law and LCPS guide-lines.

If your child takes a prescription medication and missing a dose would have serious health consequenc-es (seizure medication, insulin, etc.), it is strongly suggested that a 24-hour supply of the medication be left in the school Health Office in case of a prolonged school day. The medication must be in an original pharmacy-labeled bottle and have a physician’s order on file in the health office. The order must give the times during the 24-hour peri-od that the medication is to be administered.

The HCS/RN must have written instructions from the physician in order to admin-ister prescription medications. The instructions should include: student’s name; name and purpose of the medication; dosage and time of administration; possible side effects and measures to take if those occur; end date for administering the medication; parent/guardian signature giving permission to administer medication and to contact

physician, and physician’s signature. LCPS will not accept parent/guardian amendments to a physician’s order, including

any restriction of the principal’s designee (HCS/RN) from contacting the physician to clarify the medical order.

The “Authorization for Medication Administration” form should be used for physician’s orders. Copies of this form as well as other medical forms are available in the school office or at the LCPS website under Student Health Services.

ALL PRESCRIPTION MEDICATION MUST BE IN THE ORIGINAL PHARMACY BOTTLE WITH THE PROPER LABEL CONTAINING THE STUDENT’S NAME, MEDICATION, DOSAGE, AND INSTRUCTIONS FOR ADMIN-ISTRATION. UPON REQUEST, MOST PHARMACIES WILL PROVIDE AN EXTRA LABELED BOTTLE WITH

THE PROPER AMOUNT OF MEDICATION FOR SCHOOL. PLEASE DO NOT SEND MORE THAN A 60-DAY SUPPLY OF MEDICATION.

If the HCS/RN needs to adminis-

ter non-prescription medication:

it must be provided by the parent/guardian in an original package with the name of the medication and in-structions;

she must have a note from the parent regarding when and how much medi-cation to administer;

she will only give the amount listed on the package for your child’s age and weight and for the recommended length of time the student should re-ceive the medication unless she has doctor’s orders on the “Authorization for Medication Administration” form to dispense differently;

and she cannot administer medication that is not in its original container.

Be sure to keep the “Emergency Infor-mation” updated so we can reach you if your child is ill or injured. This can easily be done on-line through the Parent Infor-mation Management System (PIMS) on the LCPS website. All 3rd, 7th, and 10th grade students and students new to LCPS will be screened for vision and hearing during the first 60 days of school. Kindergarten students who did not have distance vision screening or hearing tests within two months of the beginning of school will also be screened.

The Commonwealth of Virginia requires that school divisions provide information on

scoliosis to parents of students in grades 5-10. The scoliosis flyer on the next two pag-

es is provided by the school at the begin-ning of each school year.
