Vocabulary is important in its own right, but it is also a powerful predictor of reading and academic success. Students with poor vo-cabulary have lower attainment levels. De-spite this it is seldom given the attention it requires within the curriculum. Teachers and Speech and Language Therapists are often aware of the need to develop vocabu-lary, but do not have the framework to work together in a time efficient manner. ‘Word Aware’ is a vocabulary teaching ap-proach that emphasises whole class and whole school learning. It is applicable to all children and emphasises quality first teach-ing. ‘Word Aware’ is based on research as well as classroom experience, so it is effective and practical. It is currently being used suc-cessfully in a number of schools.
