This Saturday our country will celebrate another year of its independence as a nation. While there is always much to celebrate in our nation, events in recent months and years have tarnished our morale and provoked cynicism toward our country. Unresolved racism,

institutional failures in accountability, the recent rise in unemployment, and the very unsettling ideological division that seems to make dialogue impossible are issues that only touch the tip of the iceberg. It can seem like there is not much value in patriotism. Why don’t we just scrap the whole thing and start over? While I cannot claim to possess a complete response, I think we can learn something from the history of our Church. The Protestant Reformation in the 1500’s was a response to real abuses in the Church: the impropriety of priests and bishops, abuses of power, and the selling of spiritual things (indulgences). All of these undermined belief in the spiritual authority of the Church. Protestant reformers sought to scrap the whole thing and start over, creating an entirely different Church. But God didn’t bank the promise of His continual Presence on human fidelity. The real reformers affirmed what was good in the Church and slowly cleansed her of her impurities. They didn’t abandon ship altogether; they kept the same solid foundation and rebuilt the parts in need of major repair. Our country has its own grievances, abuses, and divisions today. Undoubtedly, these have caused much undue suffering and misery. We can think that we must scrap the whole thing and start over, tearing down the “inherently evil” USA and replacing it with a better one. But I think we can take the more hopeful position of the true reformers of the Church. There is much to be changed, but there is much that is good. No single program can mend America’s wounds, but we can ask God for the grace to make better what is right in front of us. Just like our souls, America needs rebuilding. But just as God sees the inherent goodness of our souls and builds on that, so we can dig deep to see the inherent goodness in America and build on that. So despite the understandable grievances, we can still be proud to be American this Independence Day.
