Oversight role of Parliament / Senate.Oversight role of Parliament / Senate. Parliament is usually referred to as the legislative branch of government. To Legislate is to prescribe rules and regulations that govern a country.

As the body that represents the people, parliament should see to it that the administration of public policy reflects and meets the people's needs.

There can be no democratic system of government without transparency and accountability. The primary responsibility in this field falls squarely on the shoulders of parliament.(Senate) Through its core oversight function, parliament holds the government to account so as to ensure that government policy and actions are both efficient and commensurate with the needs of the public.

The key functions of parliamentary oversight

To detect and prevent abuse, arbitrary behavior, or

illegal and unconstitutional conduct on the part of

the government and public agencies.

Parliament scrutinize the bills and their respective amendments with a view to ensure adherence to the constitution and that they are to the best interests of the people.

Parliament can recommend that the annual budget should include all the citizens, mostly the vulnerable groups of the society like the elderly, poor ,orphans and prisoners.

The Senate House does not initiate laws or make policy, instead it scrutinises and influences policy.

PARLIAMENTARY OVERSIGHTThis function includes monitoring the achievement of goals set by legislation and the government’s own programmes.
