Semper Findit! Cataloging Guidelines
1. General Guidelines:
Use the 6xx MARC tags along with other information in the record to determine the most appropriate Semper Find It! classification. When the above tags indicate multiple classes, choose the one most relevant to the content. When surname/forename appears on spine label use the name in the authorized access point in OCLC/LC name authority file (MARC 100)
Generally do not include: Jr. or Sr. Titles (EX: Duke, Queen, Dr.)
Hyphenated names cutter to first five/eight before hyphen ‐ ‐ DO NOT INCLUDE HYPHEN or anything after it (EX: Morris‐Rankins, cutter as MORRIS) Punctuation/Special Characters acceptable only as indicated for Spine Label Detail (EX: REP/AMPH) and in the Volume Statement (EX V.1), and Fiction Cutters (EX: C.) “DATE” field optional in call/spine labels.
2. Call Number Creation:
Use Semper Findit! Categories exactly as they appear in the following key. Use space only between elements, never within elements. Space will indicate a line break in label templates. Nonfiction call numbers generally appear in the following format:
CATEGORY SUBCATEGORY1 SUBCATEGORY2 CUTTER DATE VOLUME (See example) o CATEGORY is the main Semper Findit! designation, found in the translation key. This entry should be entered exactly as displayed. o SUBCATEGORY1 and SUBCATEGORY 2 are designated in the translation key, and appear as needed within main categories. These entries should be entered exactly as displayed. Open
ended entries are limited to 8 characters each. o CUTTER is the author or creator, unless otherwise directed in the translation key. This entry is limited to 5 characters. o DATE is the 4 character year of publication or copyright, eg. 2014. o VOLUME is the volume number in the following format: eg. V.10, volume entries are a maximum of 4 characters. Use as needed.
Fiction call numbers generally appear in the following format: GENRE CUTTER 1 CUTTER 2 SERIES VOLUME DATE (See Example)

V.10, volume entries are a maximum of 4 characters. Use as needed for series organization. o DATE is the 4 character year of publication or copyright, eg. 2014.
Graphic Novel, Manga, and for some libraries, Franchised Fiction generally appear in the following format (Optional):

4. Spine Label Creation:
Spine labels may contain up to 6 total information lines. Line breaks are indicated by a single space. Semper Findit! spine labels fit best on long vertical labels. Most machines can be set to print vertically Labels are separated by a full break into 2 clusters, CLASSIFICATION data and CUTTER data. CLASSIFICATION data is entered all in caps, CUTTER data is entered in sentence structure.
