Seminole

• Three tribes living in Florida and Georgia

• Built homes in the Everglades and worked with Spanish

• Known for survival techniques, such as using different animals for weapons

• Usually travelled by canoe

Cherokee• Three tribes who originated in

Michigan and moved to Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama and Mississippi

• Assimilated into American culture dressing like the whites, owning slaves, printing their own news papers in a dialect of Iroquois

• Setting up a democracy much like a state gov’t

• Grew cotton and tobacco• Told they could keep their land• Only warred with near by

Seminoles to protect their land

Differing Outcomes• Pres. Andrew Jackson captured 2 of 3

Seminole tribes and shipped them by train to Indian Territory which we call Oklahoma, last tribe hid in Everglades and conducted a 26 yr war, still live there today

• Jackson also had the army remove the Cherokee, Sequoyah and other chiefs protested saying they had done everything asked of the US gov’t, forced to walk from central Georgia to Oklahoma in the winter with few supplies, called Trail of Tears disease spread and many died before reaching Oklahoma, where almost nothing was provided and place right next to enemies the Seminole

• Re-explored their native roots and developed a strong native culture with dances, clothing and customs from other tribes
