The Ethiopian Development Research Institute in col-laboration with University College London and other

partners launched a research project titled “Interaction between Industrial Policies and Green Economy Strat-egies in Ethiopia” on 4 May, 2015 at the Capital Hotel & Spa, Addis Ababa. The workshop was opened with an introduction and overview by Dr. Mulu Gebreeyesus, a senior research-er at EDRI and one of the coordina-tors of the project. This was followed by opening remarks from H.E Ato Neway Gebre-ab, Executive Director of EDRI and Chief Economic Advisor to the Prime Minister; H.E. Ato Kare

Chawicha, State Minister of the Min-istry of Environment and Forest; and Ato Tadesse Haile, State Minister of the Ministry of Industry. Presentations were made by the project coordinators on the project background, objectives and methods inspiring questions and comments from participants. Dr. Mulu present-ed “The gaps and priorities in main-streaming CRGE in industrial policy in Ethiopia” followed by Project ob-jectives, work streams and partners by Professor Yacob Mulugeta, Univer-sity College London. Professor Kevin from Quantum Global, Switzerland gave a brief on “Building credible and sustainable innovation systems for green industrialization” followed by

“Governance and policy integration issues and green economy strategies” by Dr. Chukwumerije Okereke of Reading University. Participants of the workshop in-cluded, experts from government ministries, different United Nations organizations, universities, interna-tional development organizations and researchers in the area. The project has been initiated in response to Ethiopia’s ambitious strategy for a Climate Resilient Green Economy (CRGE) and the need to provide practical policy that would help to streamline this strategy with Ethiopia’s industrial sector strategy in the coming 5-year development plan (GTP II)

The International Growth Cen-tre held its annual Africa Growth Forum in Addis Aba-

ba, Ethiopia from 29 June – 1 July. In this annual conference, researchers, academics and policy makers were brought together and presentations on topics pertinent to IGC partner counties were made.

The sessions included:• A public lecture by Professor John

Sutton (LSE) titled “Can Sub-Sa-haran Africa Industrialise? Les-sons from History on 29 June, 2015 at the Sheraton Addis Hotel.

• An introductory session that in-cluded welcoming remarks from Dr. Alemayehu Seyoum, Country Director of IGC Ethiopia.

• H.E Dr. Arkebe Oqubay, Advisor to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia gave some remarks on the ques-tion Can Africa Industrialise?

Framework Session: presentation by Professor Jakob Svensson (IIES, Stockholm University)

• Firms: focusing on the deter-minants of productivity, con-straints to productivity, and the means with which gov-ernments can increase pro-ductivity

• Increasing agricultural pro-ductivity in Africa

This was fol-lowed by a panel discussion with panelists Anjani Kumar Singh, Chief Secretary of the Govern-ment of Bihar and Robert Sogb-adji (Ghanaian Ministry of Pow-er)

Urbanization WorkshopOn 2 July 2015, the urbanization workshop following the AGF with a whole day session that commenced with opening remarks by Dr. Ale-mayehu Seyoum highlighting struc-tural transformation processes for the success of growing cities. This was followed by a key note speech by H.E. Mekuria Haile, Minister of Urban Development and a presentation on Ethiopian Cities Sustainable Prosper-ity Initiative by H.E. Ato Abuye Ale-mu, Advisor to the Ethiopian Minis-ter of Urban Development, Housing & Construction. Professor Tony Venables and Pro-fessor Sir Paul Collier presented on what a good city looks like and how it is formed. The workshop brought together three studies made on dif-ferent African cities including Addis Ababa. The first was presented by Dr. Simon Franklin of LSE on location, housing and labor markets in Addis

Ababa. The second presenter, Dr. Pa-tricia Jones of University of Oxford presented her recent work on entre-preneurship and firm productivity in Tanzania. Julia Bird, University of Oxford lastly presented her current study on path dependence and infra-structure in African cities focusing on the capital of Uganda, Kampala. The final session was a panel discussion chaired by Dr. Jones and panelists in-cluded H.E. Newai Gebreab, Execu-tive Director, Ethiopian Development Research Institute & Chief Econom-ic Advisor to the Prime Minister of Ethiopia, Dr. Alemayehu Seyoum, Professor Sir Collier, and Professor Venables. The session focused on dis-cussing key challenges in urbaniza-tion for Addis Ababa in the coming years and it came to a close with the conclusion from H.E.
