Lessons from a bridge collapse

• When infrastructure is judged “functionally obsolete,” inspect regularly .

Be prepared to do required maintenance or “reduce loadings.”

• When infrastructure is judged “fracture critical,” don’t be surprised when

it fails. In IT parlance, many single points of failure = failure prone!

• New design techniques can help us make our systems more fail-soft .

• Not always necessary to rebuild the entire system. You can often

preserve the components that are still in working order.

• Bridges use FHA Guide for Appraisal of Bridges. IT needs criteria to

measure and rate the health of our systems.

• There is never enough money to upgrade all infrastructure to the best

level. You must prioritize.
