Bianca Maria Visconti married Francesco Sforza. The wedding, which allowed Sforza family to dominate the Duchy of Milan for over half a century, is strictly related to the birth of a confectionery. According to the legend it was made for the first time in occasion of the wedding feast and it had the shape of the Torrazzo, the bell tower of Cremona cathedral. It can be stated that “torrone”, the Italian word forthe sweet, etymologically derives from “Torrazzo”.

• . Varieties of confectionery are found in 3 Musketeers, Double Decker, ZERO bars, and Baby Ruth bars.

• P&G wanted to create a perfect chip to address consumer complaints about broken, greasy, and stale chips, as well as air in the bags. The task was assigned to chemist Fredric Baur, who, from 1956 to 1958, created chip’s saddle shape from fried dough, and the can to go with it. Baur could not figure out how to make the chips taste good and he eventually was pulled off the job to work on another brand.

• In the mid-1960s, another P&G researcher, Alexander Liepa restarted Baur’s work, and set out to improve on the taste, which he succeeded in doing. While Baur was the true inventor of the Pringles chip, Liepa's name is on the patent. Gene Wolfe, a mechanical engineer-author known for science fiction and fantasy novels, developed the machine that cooks them. Their consistent saddle shape is mathematically known as a hyperbolic paraboloid.Their design is reportedly aided by supercomputers to ensure safe aerodynamics while packaging.

• When the DuPont chemist ROY PLUNKET combined a specific gas with hydrochloric acid. He gathered the desired gas (tetrafluoroethylene) but wasn't quite ready to start experimenting. So he cooled and pressurized the gas in canisters overnight. But when he returned the next day, the gas was gone. The canisters weighed the same amount as when they were full, but nothing came out. Confused, Plunkett cut the canisters in half. The gas had solidified on the sides, creating a slick surface. “Rather than discard the apparent mistake, Plunkett and his assistant tested the new polymer and found that it had some very unusual properties: it was extremely slippery as well as inert to virtually all chemicals, including highly corrosive acids,“ writes DuPont in its corporate history. "The product, trademarked in 1945, was first used by the military in artillery shell fuses and in the production of nuclear material for the Manhattan Project

• The use of the X became part of the company's friendship campaign whereby company handed out 100 X pins to employees.

• Later Philadelphian brothers Bernard and Murray Spain designed and sold products with the phrase Have a nice day and logo in the early 1970s.
