WRITING A BUCKET LIST
WHAT IS “A BUCKET LIST”?
• “Kick the bucket” is an English idiom (成语 ).
• “Kick the bucket” means to die.
• “He was so sick, I was worried he was going to kick the bucket!”
• “I was hit in the head! It hurt so much, I was scared I might kick the bucket!”
BUT WHAT IS A “BUCKET LIST”?
• A bucket list is a list of things you want to do before you kick the bucket – before you die!
• Anything could be on this list – anything that you want to accomplish.
• “I want to visit Europe! I will put traveling to Europe on my bucket list.”
“A BUCKET LIST”
• “Before I die, I want to see an NBA game. Seeing an NBA game is on my bucket list.”
“A BUCKET LIST”
• “Sometime in my life I want to write a novel! Writing a novel is on my bucket list.”
“A BUCKET LIST”
• “Before I die, I want to go scuba diving. Going scuba diving is on my bucket list!”
“GOALS”
• If we are talking about our bucket lists, we can also talk about our goals (目标 ).
• Goals are things that we really want to do!
• “Climbing a mountain is one of my goals!”
• “Learning to play the guitar is one of my goals!”
TALKING ABOUT GOALS
• We can talk about our goals as being:
• Short term (something you will do soon)
• Long term (something you will do a long time from now)
• “I want to learn how to ride a bike. This is one of my short term goals!

• “I want to become president!”
SHORT TERM OR LONG TERM?
• “I want to buy a cat!”
SHORT TERM OR LONG TERM?
• “I want to have a successful company!”

TALKING ABOUT GOALS
• We can talk about our goals as being:
• Probable: something that you think will happen
• Improbable: something you think isn’t very likely
PROBABLE OR IMPROBABLE?
• “I want to travel to the moon!”
PROBABLE OR IMPROBABLE?
• “I want to go to the grocery store!”
PROBABLE OR IMPROBABLE?
• “I want to see a movie at the cinema!”
PROBABLE OR IMPROBABLE?
• “I want to win the lottery!”
WHAT’S ON YOUR BUCKET LIST?
• What are your goals? What is on your bucket list?
• Tell me your ideas and I will put five examples on the board!
• We will try to decide if these goals are:
• Short term or long term
• Probable or improbable

• “My goal is to learn to drive a car. This is a short-term goal, since I plan to begin practicing soon. It is also a very probable goal, since I am a very quick learner!”
