A controversial new cellphone tower was supposed to boost West Melton reception but many customers have noticed little or no improvement.

Spark, which has co-located on the Vodafone tower, says a com-promise on the height of the tower to appease nearby residents is to blame.

Spark spokesman Conor Rob-erts said a number of its custom-ers had complained about dropped calls and slow mobile data since the West Melton site was installed and that other mobile providers were understood to have also received complaints.

The tower was switched on in September after Vodafone reduced its height from 32m to 25m to avoid

an Environment Court case with residents concerned about how such a large tower might affect their property values, visual amenities and health.

Mr Roberts said this had had a coverage impact, particularly to customers outside of the main town.

The important thing to remem-ber is that if communities want to have good mobile coverage, they

need to allow telecommunications infrastructure businesses the ability to install the equipment necessary, Mr Roberts said.

A Vodafone spokeswoman said that while its network had some very minimal coverage issues in the north western outer reaches of the coverage footprint, overall it was performing as expected.

  • Lincoln resident Virginia Smith has been named Christchurchs top makeup student.

Mrs Smith a beauty therapy student at Aoraki Polytechnics Christchurch campus won the local area section of the Wendy Hill Cosmetics National Student Award for professional pho-tographic bridal makeup.

She was one of almost 200 beauty therapy, cosmetol-ogy and beauty assistant students from throughout New Zealand who took part in the competition, which is run through the coun-trys major beauty training institutions.

The competition is staged by the makeup house

Wendy Hill Cosmetics, in association with industry educators, to assist in the support of student studies and the improvement of makeup skills in the beauty profession.

Mrs Smith said she was stoked with the win.

It was pretty cool. I got told at school and they had a really nice prize for me some $150 worth of makeup and a certificate, she said.

Im setting up [busi-ness] at home so that will be something I will get into in the future.

Wendy Hill Cosmetics general manager Tiffany Pule said the high standard of entries this year showed that the levels of skill and

understanding of the principles of makeup were continuing to improve in the tertiary training sector.

She said that was a credit to the passion and talent of the students themselves, and a credit to industry tutors who were teaching makeup skills to a high professional level.

Virginia created a very flattering bridal makeup that suited her model well, and her entry shows that she has a good understand-ing of makeup artistry and how to apply makeup for a good photographic effect, Mrs Pule said.

It shows she has real abil-ity as a makeup artist.

From page 1A 2degrees spokeswoman said the com-

pany was still fine tuning its network to give west Melton customers the best cover-age. However, it had its own cell site at a dif-ferent location to Vodafone and Spark and height was not an issue.

Mr Roberts said the towers reduced height meant it did not cover parts of the area, forcing some customers cellphones to bounce between neighbouring sites that were further away.

Interference created by topography and vegetation including shelterbelts was also exacerbated by having a smaller tower.

Spark would try realigning its antennas in the hope that it would improve cover-age but problems were expected to persist for the foreseeable future. It was very un-likely resource consent for a taller tower would be applied for.

We would have to go through the time-consuming and expensive process again, and the outcome could well be the same. Further, we simply do not have a bottom-less pit of money to rebuild existing sites, Mr Roberts said.

Selwyn Central Community Board member Bruce Russell, also a West Melton resident and Spark customer, said many residents were annoyed about not getting the coverage they had expected.

The point of the matter is that even the people who objected [to the tower] said we want better coverage in West Melton, Mr Russell said.

Everybody has to live in this communi-ty and we have to appreciate other peoples opinions but I think the thing is that we have got to get something that is going to be useful whereas this thing here, for the mon-ey that has been spent, we probably havent increased our coverage to any great extent.

A programme to help restore Te Waihora/Lake Ellesmere has been bagged by local fishermen.

Trials to re-introduce beds of macrophytes (aquatic plants) to the lake are being carried out as part of the Whakaora Te Waihora programme led by Environment Canterbury and Ngai Tahu.

The macrophytes, which dis-appeared after the 1968 Wahine storm, have been touted as having the ability to buffer wave action, take up nutrients, improve water quality and provide habitat for fish.

However, Greenpark residents and retired commercial fishermen Colin Arps and Donald Brown told the Selwyn Times that reintro-ducing the macrophytes would be a bad idea.

The pair, who have spent much of their life fishing and living by the lake, said that when the weed beds had been dominant through the 1940s, 50s and 60s, rotting veg-etation had created a eutrophic en-vironment harmful for fish life and caused a foul and overwhelming stench around the lake.

Mr Arps said the fish life had been 10 per cent of what it was now.

In my opinion it was probably one of the worst pollutants the lake has ever had and here they are . . . trying to reinstate it.

Whakaora Te Waihora pro-gramme implementation manager David Murphy said the health of

the lake was good from a fishery perspective but water quality was poor.

Macrophyte work was still in the trial stage and would not proceed if it proved too large and costly an in-tervention. If trials did show it to be feasible, there would be a commu-nity discussion before it went ahead.

We acknowledge that Te Wai-hora today is a very challenging place for submerged plants to grow and beds will not establish without a lot of help, Mr Murphy said.

It is very unlikely that macro-phyte growth will get out of hand or build up to a nuisance level.

Mr Arps and Mr Brown said money spent on the macrophyte programme would be better spent on restoring the Ahuriri Lagoon which drains into the lake.

ECan leases the endowment land around the lagoon on three year terms, with grazing licences up for review next year.

Mr Arps and Mr Brown criti-cised ECan for allowing dairy farming in the area and said the number of dairy cattle appeared to have increased in recent years.

Mr Murphy said endowment land rental provided income to help finance river protection works and lake management. ECan did not have figures on the number of dairy cows and other livestock on the land.

Currently most of the true left bank of the Ahuriri is mainly used for sheep and beef grazing when in past years it was grazed with dairy cows so there are probably in fact fewer dairy cows on the area than

    previously, he said.Alternative management and

uses for the lagoon were being in-vestigated.

Canterbury University freshwater ecology professor Jon Harding said re-establishing macrophytes in the lake could be a good thing, although they probably would die back in winter, possibly causing a stink.

The reality is re-establishing large macrophyte beds will be ex-tremely difficult and this whole project is ambitious. I think creat-ing enough macrophytes to cause a problem with decomposition is a very, very long way away.

However, he agreed with the fishermen that the real solutions to the lakes problems were in the catchment, rather than the lake it-self.

Police cordoned off parts of Rolleston in the early hours of Sunday morning to catch a man alleged to have exposed himself to women while riding his scooter on three separate occasions.

The man, a resident of the Rolleston area, has been charged with indecent exposure.

He was arrested after police received a call from two women who said they had just been flashed by him.

Sergeant Franco Lovrich said the suspected offender was stopped on his scooter at a po-lice cordon on Rolleston Drive and did not resist arrest.

Sergeant Lovrich said the women had been walking home on Rolleston Drive after spend-ing the night out socialising when the incident happened.

The two previous incidents also happened within Rolleston during the last two weeks.

The man will appear in Christchurch District Court on Thursday.

Police have appealed for anyone else who may have been offended against by the man, or who may have crossed his path to come forward.

  • How long have you been with Waihora rugby and how long have you been president?

I have been president for 23 years and I have been associated with the club 40-odd years.

Im guessing you would have started as a player?

Yeah, as a little five-year-old.I take it being president is

entirely voluntary, they dont compensate you for that at all?

No, everythings voluntary. What does that involve for

    you?Basically completely overseeing

the whole operation whether it be organising coaches and keeping the committee happy and just generally talking to people all the time.

Is it quite a lot of work?Yeah in the winter time it

becomes a four to five day a week job really, to be fair, once you take in your Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursday and all day Saturday.

Are you still playing rugby? No, I retired a couple of years

ago.Do you miss it?Yeah, every Saturday the brain

says I should be out there but the body says no.

Do you have a wife or partner?

Ive been married 23 years the same time that Ive been president. Its the only way I can remember how many years I have been married!

Shes done well then to put up with sharing you with rugby for so long.

She loves the rugby club so its all good and she is from a family that are mad on rugby so its all good.

It sounds like youre a lucky man.

Youre dead right there. What makes you want to do the

presidents job?I just enjoy seeing people turn

up and play footy, from the little tiny five-year-olds right through to the seniors and the battling old division 3s playing every week. Its just fun to be there and help out.

It must be quite gratifying to be recognised with an award after all these years?

Im very humbled about it to be fair I never saw it coming

and while I have been president that long, I have been blessed by a very good committee. People have come and gone but everybody that has been on the committee has been hard working and that has just made life so easy.

I was just sitting there enjoying the awards evening and I thought hell, thats my name being read out. I looked around and there is a big photo of me on the screen holding the trophy we won for club of the year at last years awards. Next thing I had to get up on the stage and find my jacket and make the speech which

normally I am fairly good at but my wheels were blown off so I couldnt really respond that well.

What area does the Waihora club cover again?

It starts at Oaklands, Halswell, Tai Tapu, Motukarara and sort of ends up out on the peninsula. We try and combine with Banks Peninsula as much as we can. And theres Diamond Harbour as well, so its a fairly big catchment.

Does that make getting players together for training difficult, if theyre coming from all over the show?

No, and the parents are very

accommodating, so its all good really.

Have any well-known players come out of Waihora?

This year was the first time we have managed to get two players into the Canterbury wider training group Mark Maitland and Tyler Koning. That was quite good, although both had serious injuries in the grand final this year and missed out on their opportunity. Mark destroyed his knee and Tyler did his Achilles tendon.

Ive heard youre involved with horse racing, is that right?

Waihora Rugby Club president Chris Thornley won volunteer of the year at this months Canterbury and Crusaders Rugby Awards. He spoke to Tom Doudney about rugby and his other passion horse racing.

  • I train and drive horses. How long have you been doing

that?About 20 years.Have you had much success? Its like everything in life. You

have your highs and your lows but I believe we punch above our weight so Im happy.

You do the training on your property there, I take it?

Yeah, at my place in Greenpark. Is your horse training and driv-

ing what you do for a living or is it more of a hobby?

I do that and Im a farrier by trade so they both work hand and hand.

Sorry, but youre going to have to tell me what a farrier is.

A blacksmith that puts shoes on horses feet.

Is that a bit of a dying trade or are there a lot of you about?

There are not enough of us out here unfortunately. There are plen-ty of little horses floating around.

How did you get into that line of work?

Just through my granddad. He trained horses and I sort of just fol-lowed on with the horses, really. Its just a family thing.

I suppose you would have grown up around horses as a kid?

Yip.When did you learn to drive

them? When I was a teenager. How long have you lived in the

Greenpark area?Im born and bred here. Im 47

now.So has your property been in

the family for a long time?It would have been. Im not too

sure how long a fair while.Have you lived anywhere else or

done much travel? No, just the odd holiday over to

Australia or round about but thats all.

Did you ever think about mov-ing away?

No, I never saw it as a thing to do, really.

So apart from the horses and rugby do you have any other par-ticular hobbies or interests?

Not really.I suppose those things would

keep you fairly busy.I do really like my summer

times, just having a bit of time to myself because you only really get three months of a year off from rugby and it doesnt seem to take long before youre back into it.

Changes to the Selwyn District Plan have been made to provide additional business and residential land in Rolleston and Lincoln.

Earthquake Recovery Minister Gerry Brownlee recently approved a number of plan changes which will rezone areas of Lincoln and Rolleston and amend some district plan rules for residential areas.

The changes have been made as actions under the Land Use Recov-ery Plan which identifies the loca-tion of residential and business ac-tivities within greater Christchurch.

District council planning manag-er Tim Harris said the plan changes were consistent with the strategic planning work the district council had undertaken with the commu-nity in recent years.

One of the plan changes has seen 122ha of land owned by Rolleston Industrial Development Ltd, on the corner of Hoskyns Rd and State Highway One, rezoned from ru-ral to Business 2A an industrial zoning. The land is across the road from Izone Industrial Park.

Another plan change has resulted in a 3600 sq m area south of Lin-coln New World being rezoned so it can be used for medium density residential housing such as town-houses, as well as mixed use activi-ties. This allows for a neighbour-hood centre containing local shops as well as residential housing.

In Rollestons eastern and south-western outskirts, a number of greenfield priority areas have been

rezoned to allow for additional res-idential housing development. Ad-ditional changes have been made to implement the district councils adopted Rural Residential Strategy.

Changes have also been made to district plan rules to allow the max-imum area of residential buildings on sections to increase from 35 per cent to 40 per cent of the site area. Further changes have been made to rules relating to medium density housing provisions to better man-age the design of units and provide for rear service lane access in cer-tain circumstances.

Last month, the district council endorsed a consultation process on a number of other proposed plan changes affecting Rolleston and Lincoln which has been sent to Mr Brownlee for review.

Some of Southbridge Schools famous former pupils, in-cluding All Black Dan Carter, have been immortalised along with the current crop of children on the school fence.

The school has started building a new leavers fence with each paling having a picture of a child who is fin-ishing school on it.

The children also prepared palings for four well-known former pupils All Blacks Dan Carter, Doug Bruce and Alby Anderson, as well as 2006 Common-wealth Games shooting gold medallist Graeme Ede.

Bruce, Anderson and Ede were at the school on Thursday to officially open the fence, which replaces an older one at the front of the school .

Bruce said he thought the fence was a good idea and was pleased to have been at the opening.

I enjoyed my time at Southbridge and I remember those days quite well so it was nice to be invited back to participate in that.

It will now be a new school tradition that in their fi-nal week of school, children who are leaving will nail up their paling themselves.

Southbridge School principal Susan Jennison said it was hoped that other ex-pupils in the community would also feel that they could add themselves to the fence.

The fence would remain incomplete until enough people added their likenesses to a paling.

Given the number in the community who went to the school, we think it wont take long to fill, Ms Jen-nison said.

We also like the idea of having established a new tra-dition for students something special for our seniors. They will be able to bring their children to school aged five and show them what they did in 2014 when they were 10.

The idea had come from a visit by board of trustees members to Limehills School in Southland which had created a similar project.

Local businesses supplied materials for the fence and parents helped with digging holes and putting in posts.

IN BRIEFCycleway work startsConstruction has started on the $234,000 Springston to Lincoln cycleway. The 2.6km cycleway will run from Everest Way in Springston along the south side of Ellesmere Junction Rd to the Lincoln University child care centre where it will connect to existing pathways. Due to be completed by the end of January, it will form part of a wider off-road cycling network connecting the main townships together in eastern Selwyn.

Car and rubbish firesA suspicious car fire on Thompsons Rd, near West Melton, was originally spotted by a helicopter flying overhead on Saturday afternoon. The helicopter operators then called firefighters who arrived to find it had been put out by a passing Environment Canterbury staff member. Kirwee Chief Fire Officer Stuart Jones said the car was burnt out by that stage. On Sunday, a rubbish fire that had spread to nearby trees on a Curries Rd property near Springfield, kept water tankers busy. A Fire Fervice spokesman said two water tankers remained on site for several hours after Lincoln firefighters put out the fire, dampening things down.

Leadership Training for First-Level SupervisorsSimple, practical and relevant skills for leadersTEAM LEADER believes that leaders matter immensely, and that we underestimate the impact of great leaders in all areas of life work, family and society in general.

TEAM LEADER looks to a future where we have a heightened expectation of, and appreciation for, the role of leaders, no matter what sector of society, and no matter what level of responsibility. We believe that when we invest in our potential leaders we create Leaders for Life.

TEAM LEADER holds the fundamental belief that with the right attitude, knowledge and skills, everyone has the potential to lead. Sadly, most people in leadership roles underperform, simply because they havent been given the opportunity to learn how to lead.

BECAUSE LEADERSHIP IS NOT 9 TO 5LEADERS FOR LIFE

    LEADERSHIP 101 PROGRAMME

Leadership 101 is the best first-level leadership training you can get,

    and at the best price.

Creating leaders for lifeThe power of an effective leader should never be underestimated. Businesses or organisations that invest in creating leaders who are insightful, pragmatic and engaged also create more positive work environments with greater innovation amongst their staff.

When you have top leaders you have low turnover, happier staff, better quality work, great customer service, and increased co-operation which can all lead to increased revenue.

Many organisations leaders underperform simply because they have never been given the tools, skills or knowledge that will allow them to become a successful leader.

At Team Leader, Rob Hoult has developed a inspiring programme which can create leaders at all levels of responsibility.

Taking the experience and knowledge gained from his 30-year career in the NZ Defence Force, in which he was a driving force in the transformation of the Armys leadership programme, he is able to coach and consult members of your organisation through workshops and courses which provide relevant and practical leadership training which is both affordable and effective.

Leadership 101, a three-day foundational course, provides a solid grounding in leadership knowledge and skills which is highly relevant for employees moving into their first leadership role or equally beneficial for

those leaders who have never had any formal leadership education.

This course helps participants understand what makes a good leader and gives real-life and participant scenarios to gain perspective and experience.

It covers areas including; building relationships and influence, problem solving, decision making, building teams, motivation and engagement, leading teams through change, resolving conflict, accountability and responsibility, coaching and mentoring. It also gives participants an insight into their own personalities and how these strengths can be used in leading a team.

Participants receive a comprehensive workshop folder which they can then use for future reference and also receive a follow up session 8 to 10 weeks after the course completion.

Rob is now taking bookings for the Leadership 101 workshops in 2015, and places are limited. Workshops will be run in Rolleston or Lincoln on the following dates: 17-19 February, 24-26 March, 14-16 April, 2-4 June, 7-9 July.

If you want your business to grow through better resourcing the leaders within your organisation, visit www.teamleader.co.nz/

    workshops/ or give Rob a call on 027 444 5891.

DAY ONE: Knowledge of own personality profile using the Hogan Personality Inventory Values-based and ethical leadership Building relationships and influence

DAY TWO: Problem solving Decision-making Motivation and engagement Building and leading teams

DAY THREE: Leading teams through change Building workplace culture Building accountability and responsibility Resolving conflict Coaching and mentoring

    HALF-DAY FOLLOW-UP(8-10 weeks after workshop)

WORKSHOP INFORMATIONLeadership 101 takes place at a wide variety of locations in provincial NZ check our website for a venue near you.Participants receive a comprehensive workshop folder for future reference. Lunch and snacks are provided each day.

Bookings are made from our website - see www.teamleader.co.nz/workshops/ or email [email protected] for further details.

It is highly relevant for your employees moving into their first leadership role, but would be equally beneficial for more experienced leaders who have not had the benefit of formal leadership education and training.

Leadership 101 is a three-day practically oriented workshop that helps participants understand not only what good leaders do, but how they do it.

On Leadership 101 participants apply their learning to real-life scenarios and draw on fellow participant perspective and experience.

Rob Hoult is the face behind Team Leader.Rob completed a thirty-year career in the NZ Defence Force and was the driving force behind the transformation of the Armys leadership programme. Rob brings this wealth of experience, knowledge and expertise to your organisation through Team Leader leadership workshops, coaching and consulting.

Team Leader provides leaders with simple, relevant and pragmatic leadership training that is affordable and effective.

Take advantage of the extensive research and development that the NZ Defence Force has invested in the development of their leaders.

Leadership 101 provides a solid grounding in foundational leadership knowledge and skills.

  • LINE BALL: The ball is hit down the edge of the field by a Core Consulting player as Reader Fishings Bridget de Barre chases.

WHACK: A Canterbury Equine Clinic member winds up a hit. They won the third/fourth play-off over Hotel Montreal.

A West Melton resident will be one of five men to challenge a lamb shearing record in a remote woolshed near Te Kuiti next month.

Aidan Copp, of West Melton, will join fellow shearers George Parker, Willie Hewitson, Ringa Paewai and Josh MacDonald to tackle the record of 2638 strongwool lambs in eight hours, set a year ago.

Their effort will take place on January 6 at Ingleby Corporations Puketiti Station.

Shearing four two-hour runs, with half-hour breaks for smoko and an hour for lunch, the shearers will target the record set by brothers Sam and Richard Welch, former national circuit champion Angus Moore, and Coel LHuillier and Peter Totorewa on December 10, last year. The individual tallies ranged from Mr Moores 607 to Mr Totorewas 449.

New Zealand Shearing Contractors Association vice-president Mark Barrowcliffe, record manager for the Puketiti Station attempt, told Hawkes Bay Today his team were well placed to take on the challenge.

Working together since the start of December, each man had done more than the average 528

which will need to be achieved in front of a team of qualified World Sheep Shearing Records Society judges.

None of the hopefuls has previously shorn a record attempt, although Mr Paewai was one of three whose three-stand record attempt in January 2013 was called-off when judges ruled the night beforehand that the lambs for the event did not meet head-wool requirements. Mr MacDonald is the son of former record-breaker and 1994 world champion Alan MacDonald.

The shearers have tasted success as competition shearers, with Mr Paewai having won the Golden Shears junior and intermediate finals in 2002 and 2003, and Mr Hewitson the Royal Welsh Show senior final in the United Kingdom in 2010.

One original hopeful, Peter-Lee Ratima, withdrew after suffering a serious neck injury at rugby during the winter, but he is back shearing and has been running the crews gym training.

The record bid, which will cost about $10,000, including fees to the society and feeding shearers, shed crews and judges, is one of five understood to be in the planning over the next three months.

MODERN TRANSPORT: Father Christmas was at the event but he didnt come by sleigh.

Chilly weather led to a smaller than expected crowd of 500 attend-ing the Country Christmas in the Park event in Darfield on Saturday night but those who did go enjoyed a great show, organiser Rebecka Slaven said.

Acts included country artist John Grenell, band Veloset and a number of other Selwyn performers.

Mrs Slaven said an energetic performance from Zumba instruc-tor Kim Churton, who got every-one up and moving, was a popular way to end the show.

We ran over time by quite a bit but one of the comments I got from people at the end was that it had been the best show they had seen because of the acts we had.

Families living in the fast-growing area of Rolleston will no doubt be very pleased to see a new cycle shop open in their local shopping centre.

A branch of the long-established Cycleworkz in the Bishopdale Mall, Cycleworkz Rolleston offers an extensive selection of bikes for the whole family, says owner Joe Crichton.

We are a family-oriented business and we were very keen to open a shop in Rolleston because it gives us the chance to be part of a growing community, Joe says. We are starting in a small, temporary shop, then when the new complex is built we will be moving into a larger shop in there.

As an independent operator, Joe is able to choose what brands to stock at Cycleworkz, and he offers a wide range to suit all requirements and budgets. They range from childrens bikes right through to adult sizes, as well as road bikes and mountain bikes. Brands available are BYK, BH, Trek, Jamis, Polygon and the New Zealand-designed Bauer.

Bauer is a very popular brand at the lower end of the market and our range covers bikes for both adults and kids, Joe says. Trek and BH are premium brands, and we have them priced from $500. Its a great value range for our customers, and at the higher end these brands are used by Tour de France competitors.

In addition to the bikes, Cycleworkz Rolleston stocks a full range of cycling accessories. These include the German Uvex helmets and eyewear as well as other leading helmet brands, cycling shoes, gloves, tyres and saddles. They also carry a wide range of high-vis gear, which is becoming increasingly sought after as cyclists become more aware of their need to be seen by other road users, especially motorists.

Full cycle repairs are also offered at Cycleworkz.

The workshop is a big part of our business, Joe says. Robbie Brown is our workshop manager and he is able to do all types of cycle repair. We also provide a bike fit for our customers, which means when they purchase a bike it is adjusted to their individual needs.

Their first service, which is usually after about six weeks, is free, and for the high-end models we offer a years free service.

For the younger children, Cycleworkz Rolleston also sells scooters and provides scooter repairs.

A former fitness instructor and educator, Joe describes himself as a bike nut, and he regularly cycles with his family. He says recreational cycling has seen tremendous growth over the last five years, especially in Christchurch, and he enjoys being part of the industry and providing products and services so families can get involved in this enjoyable and healthy pastime. He plans to introduce group rides in Rolleston, with participants setting out from Cycleworkz for rides around the local area.

We do these from the Bishopdale shop on a Sunday. Groups of riders cycle about 30 to 40 kilometres in the winter and 100-plus in the summer. Its quite casual, and people can take part whenever they want to.

Laybys for Christmas are welcome at the new Cycleworkz Rolleston, as well as Q Card and Farmers Card. The store is located next to Snap Fitness and opened on Saturday, December 6. Normal opening times are Monday to Friday 8.30am-5.30pm, Saturday 9am- 4pm.

The Evolocity event, New Zealands first ever day of electric motorsport, was held at Mike Pero Motorsport Park, Ruapuna.

Sponsored by lines company Orion, it featured standing sprints (drags) and lap sprints for electric go karts, motor-cycles and cars.

It also pitted electric vehicles against combustion vehicles and featured a two-lap race for modi-fied electric bicycles.

The Lincoln students were one of 15 high school teams that com-peted in a number of challenges, using vehicles they had built dur-ing the year.

Lincoln High School took out the highest speed in the drag race, as well as the shortest time in the street circuit and the economy run.

While Christmas and New Year is widely regarded as a time of celebration, it is also often accompanied by an increase in family violence.

Families can feel under financial pressure with the extra expenses of Christmas gifts and the expectation of providing a special meal to celebrate Christmas.

People are often tired after a busy year and, with many workplaces closing down over this period, family members may be spending a lot more time with each other than at any other time of the year. While this may be a good thing, it can also lead to tension in relationships, which may be exacerbated by excessive alcohol consump-tion.

It is important that we look out for each other and try and spot the warning signs. If you know someone who is not coping and is at risk of lashing out at their family, or someone who is being hurt by their partner or family member, seek help.

In my role as Minister of Justice and Minister for Courts, family violence is an area that I am very focused on currently. The recently released Glenn Inquiry Report into family violence has reinforced the importance of taking collective action on this issue.

The Government is focused on dealing

with the scourge of family violence in our communities and Social Development Minister Anne Tolley and I are leading a Ministerial working group to develop an all-of-government approach to better pro-tect victims of abuse.

Some of the initiatives that we are putting in place already include:

Reviewing the Domestic Violence Act 1995 to ensure the system keeps victims safe and holds offenders to account; having the Law Commission look at how we can better support victims of sexual violence; establishing a nation-wide home safety service to help victims who want to leave a violent relationship; establishing a chief vic-tims advisor; and strengthening collabora-tion between the Ministry of Justice, police, the Corrections Department, the Ministry of Social Development and the courts.

The issues surrounding violence within families are complex and we are working on ways to develop a comprehensive, long-term approach to break the cycle of abuse. Major areas of focus include changing attitudes and behaviours and using early interventions to tackle drug and alcohol addiction.

While the Government is working hard to try and reduce family violence, the com-munity has a part to play too. So lets all try and be extra kind to each other this silly season.

Festive season can increase family violence

SUPPORT GROUP FOR BREAST CANCER SUFFERERSHELPING HAND: Rolleston residents Lisa Bowater, left, and Zita Bezuidenhout are the co-ordinators of a new support group for breast cancer sufferers in the Selwyn area. Mrs Bezuiden-hout, married with two daughters and three grand-children, was diagnosed with breast cancer in May 2012. Since her diagnosis, she has met a number of women in the area who have also experienced breast cancer. She felt she could offer some support to others by starting this group. Mrs Bowater is married with two children and lost her mother to breast cancer 17 months ago. Other family members are also suffering from the disease. The group will meet on the last Thursday of every month starting in January. Meetings will provide an opportunity for women and men who have had a recent or past diagnosis of breast can-cer to meet, share experiences over a cuppa, and receive information and advice. There will also be guest speakers and other activities. Non-profit organisation Breast Cancer Support is helping to set up the group. For more information about meeting times and locations, email Mrs Bezuidenhout on [email protected] or call her at home on 03 347 7000, or call Mrs Bowater on 347 1211.

Tuesday and Thursday 1100-1200 at the SportsRehab Rolleston clinic sees a social and enjoyable physio lead circuit class that is attended by an array of clients.

Our regular attendees each come from different backgrounds and each have fascinating stories to tell and are there just for a general fitness boost or for long term management of their conditions which with regular exercising have become a lot more manageable. For our more senior participants just the opportunity to get involved in a group along with getting the benefits of exercising is fantastic and they absolutely love it, even though sometimes they can get a bit chatty but our physios either join them for a bit of gossiping or get an earful for not working (all in good faith and manner). Some of them say that even just the experience of getting ready for the class and getting there and back is enough of a motivator to make them join in.

We now know so many great benefits of exercising such as:

n Controls and limits weight gain (simple the more vigorous the exercise the more calories you burn)

n Better general mental wellbeing along with a better outlook on life. Stress is a huge factor that influences everyone these days. Exercising can relieve or at least provide that opportunity to get away from it all. So better for mental health as well

n Decreases risks of suffering from stroke, diabetes type II (or helps control blood sugar levels), helps with arthritis, and changes of falls in the more experienced population along with helping them stay sharper (stops cognitive decline)

n Better sleep at night which along with exercising on a daily basis gives people better energy levels

n People who exercise are more likely to be motivated to maintain a better diet and feel better about their appearance

Until no so long ago it was common belief that bed rest or activity avoidance was the golden tool for a quick recovery for any kind of illness or injury. Over the past few decades more and more evidence has surfaced, to the point where we know it for a fact, that it is actually the exact opposite. The key to a quicker, longer lasting recovery is getting a healthy dose of get moving on daily basis.

Once Xmas is over we welcome you to join in with our weekly circuit classes.

    OUR LOCATION

  • Seasons greetings one and all and a special welcome to all the new arrivals to our district this year.

Its been another year of ex-traordinary growth for Selwyn with all the challenges and op-portunities that it brings.

Christmas is a time to share friendship and goodwill with our family and friends, and rec-ognise the true treasures in our life as we care and share our values and ideals with others.

We owe so much to so many when we think of all the volunteers who contribute to the well-being of our commu-nity. Our sports clubs, recreational, cultural activities and community care services are all largely serviced by volunteers.

Our new community response pro-gramme (contact person Sue Jenkins 347 2977 or 021 249 4861) initiated following the earthquakes, is proving very successful

and compliments our emergency service and Civil Defence volunteers.

Volunteers all contribute so much to the well-being of our community and ensuring Sel-wyn is such a wonderful place to live, work and play.

On behalf of the councillors and myself, I would like to thank all those who have supported us and council staff in the many activities undertaken during the year.

After a particularly busy year I hope we can all enjoy the Christmas break, take time to reflect and refresh as we remember family and friends, and consider the good things in life.

Its been a privilege and a pleasure to work with you and for you this past year.

Safe journeys, merry Christmas and a happy and prosperous New Year to you all.

    Merry Xmas from the mayor

COLOURFUL: New murals adorning the Ako Rolleston pre-school are the result of eight weeks of collabora-tion between its children and pupils at Rolleston School. The murals, which have been kept at the school, were recently delivered to the pre-school. A karakia (prayer) was said and there was a shared morning tea with pupils and staff from both schools.

TIS THE SEASON: As part of West Melton Schools Christmas display, pupils were asked to colour in a Christmas tree each. There were a variety of styles including glitter, tin foil, gel pens and good old fashioned colouring pencils. The pupils individual works have been displayed together in the shape of a large Christmas tree shape. Fergus Johnson, above, was the lucky pupil whose tree graced the top of the display (inset).

The festive season is here, with celebration and entertainment accompanied by an abundance of food and drink. Many people will enter the season with a resolution to enjoy but not overindulge. Others will eat, drink and be merry for the last time, ever, because the 1st of January means their New Years resolution kicks in. For many, the 1st of January is very similar to starting a diet tomorrow, or Monday, but on a much grander scale. Losing weight and getting fit are two of the most popular choices for a New Years Resolution.

Many people start their New Years diet with gusto and lose some weight. However, after a month or two, they tire of the inflexible regime of a diet and slip back into their old behaviours. If they have lost weight, they tend to regain it and often, more weight than they lost.

If your New Years Resolution is to get healthy and fit and lose weight, then let us help you!

In early February, a number of local businesses will participate in conjunction with Sally Rossiter and the Selwyn Times,

in a programme sponsoring 12 to 15 members of the community to lose weight and get fit. The goal is to help people make permanent changes in their lifestyle and to enable them to reach a healthy weight and fitness level and maintain it. Sally will design an individualised healthy eating plan to help lose and maintain weight loss, with ongoing support and tools, including a new phone app. Businesses will provide sponsorship such as the Lincoln Uni Rec Centre who will sponsor 6 people with memberships at the Rec Centre Gym and sessions with a Personal Trainer. The goal is permanent change and to help the participants gain all the benefits of reaching their goal and maintaining it. To register interest in our sponsored fitness and weight loss programme starting in February, email Sally on [email protected].

Our goal for Selwyn is to ultimately make it the healthiest community in New Zealand!

    TO WIN!BE IN

    Question:

    Answer:

Quality products from the web to the shed!

My garden is starting to dry out fast. How can I help to conserve water in the soil?

    Tip

Email to: [email protected] or post your question on our Facebook page: www.facebook.com/igro.co.nz

The warm, dry weather certainly dries out the garden

quickly. In garden beds and raised gardens, try to give it a good long soak every few days rather than a small spray each day. This helps to encourage the roots of the plants to go deeper down in the soil for moisture, which means you will have to water less often. Mulch! A 10cm layer of good quality mulch on the top of your gardens will definitely help too. We have a good range of barks and mulches come down and have a look! Pots can do with a good water every few days too. When planting, look for a mix that has water holding crystals in them at they help to retain moisture. GARDENING

  • GARDENING

Gardening in pots is a spectacularly re-warding and low labour hobby.

Instead of battling the elements, treating tired old soil, weeding and digging franti-cally, you simply tip the prepared perfect potting mix into the container, follow it up with the plants, water and wait.

Its hard to go wrong. You just move the pot around until youve found the perfect sunny or shady spot, without disturbing the root system, because a container garden is portable.

You can move it about your home, patio or garden to fill bare spots at any time of year.

And best of all, when you move house, you dont have to leave your cherished garden behind they all shift with the furniture.

Furthermore, container gardens look great anywhere as hanging baskets on terraces and pergolas, half round containers spilling colour down a wall or fence, or sim-ply sitting on paved areas, decks and steps.

For best effect, plan your planter by height as well as colour.

You can mix annuals with a central perennial until the perennial gets well established, and in the meantime, enjoy a miniature garden rather than a miniature plant surrounded by bare earth.

You can dispense with the annuals when the perennial takes over.

Container gardeners can pretty much give up weeding altogether. But you dont need to do a bit of soil maintenance from time to time, because the plants arent in a self renewing environment theyre relying on you to give them nutrition and moisture.

Whether youre going away or staying put, the prospect of watering the garden container plants in particular can put a real dampener on your summer.

The easy answer would be to just put all container plants into the garden and be done with the fussing.

However, theres no denying that a few well-chosen container plants bring a decorative flour-ish to bland deserts of paving and deck.

They are invaluable, too, for standing like bouncers beside entrances or enhancing the end of some clever vista you have carved out of your plot.

However, as plant accommo-dation, rather than providing a luxury getaway, pots and con-tainers are more like a prison sentence, with water and food limited and excess sun and wind in exposed locations.

This means you need to be cunning with your compost and a wizard with your choice of green matter.

Why is it that weeds can abseil their way into a pot and look so healthy while the plant you intended to shine on its glazed pedestal looks anaemic and spindly? I suspect its because most of us are unrealistic about the level of maintenance we will need to lavish on our charges.

Its tempting to go for muti-coloured pot plants but such high-octane performance demands the pampering of a movie star weekly deadhead-ing and feeding and almost daily watering, so its really only for the keenest enthusiast.

Spring bulbs are another clas-sic disaster area irresistible when we see the pictures at the garden centre but a disaster a fortnight after the party is over when we fail to follow up after the leaves and flowers at the start of the year have flopped and faded.

Stick them in plastic contain-ers before sinking them inside a classy bit of earthenware.

Later, out they go to make way for a more permanent successor. It is a mistake to assume special new plants somehow deserve a prime spot in a container right

outside the ranchsliders. Plant them in the ground

where they will get their roots down and draw deep for sum-mer moisture instead. And if you want to see them, get off your bum and go out in to the garden and look.

If your soil is heavy, spend some effort planting them on mounds and improve soil structure with plenty of grit and compost.

The most successful pot plants are tried and tested toughies that will survive on neglect.

Essentials include succulents, flaxes, native xeronema and epiphytic plants, which are used to hanging out like a shoestring. Epiphytes include spiky astelias as well as other native foliage plants such as Griselinia lucida and pse
