is an architectural firm whose work is of exceptional
relevance to our times and is characterized by its sensi-
tive and resonant responses to local traditions, land-
scape and context as well as by its innovative aesthetic
and leading edge technology.
SELECTED LABORATORIES depicts our investigation
and interest in creating laboratory environments while
pushing technology to its limits. We strive to create ar-
chitecture that participates in all aspects of local con-
text and culture, as well as in the unfolding future that
recognizes architecture in its unparalleled and timely
significance.
Since its birth, now more than thirty years ago, The
Design Partnership success is due to the efforts of our
inspirational clients, distinguished consultants and our
dedicated staff who have contributed to our innovated
legacy over the years.

The VA Puget Sound Mental Health & Research project
is composed of four distinct projects that are linked to
Mental Health treatment and research. The projects
includes a $27.7M Seismic upgrade with careful phas-
ing of interior renovation work to existing departments.
A new $105M Mental Health Services and Research
Building (200,000gsf) and a new $36.8M Parking
Structure (1,000 stalls). The projects require extensive
coordination with VA personnel and considerable un-
derstanding of the constraints of the existing campus
facilities, utilities and operations. The Design Partner-
ship is Associate Architect on this project.

The VA Palo Alto Ambulatory Care Center will provide
a broad range of outpatient services to veterans in-
cluding primary care, specialty care, The Regional Am-
putee Center, Dentistry, Eye Care, Audiology, Women’s
Clinic, Education and Conference. The building works
together with Building 7 to create a front door to cam-
pus services on the south side of the hospital. The De-
sign Partnership is Associate Architect on this project.

The VA Palo Alto Research Laboratory The new re-
search animal care vivarium occupies approximately
35,000 gross square feet, provides expanded re-
search animal resources, and replaces the Building
54 Vivarium- an outmoded, noncompliant, temporary
facility. The biomedical research laboratory compo-
nent accommodates current underserved research staff
and provides additional resources for projected new
research staff. This new facility is co-located with the
vivarium to support researchers who use animal mod-
els, reducing and possibly eliminating animal transport
across the campus. This component occupies approxi-
mately 50,000 gross square feet and replaces sub-
standard labs in a building slated for demolition, and
resources to support new research programs. The De-
sign Partnership as Associate Architect on this project.

The UCSF Bioengineering & Tissue Research Center
houses a cross-disciplinary laboratory that examines
the engineering, growth and transplant of new tis-
sues. The laboratory also includes within it an atomic
force microscope, a tissue culture room, and a state-
of-the-art microsurgery. Because of the rapidly evolv-
ing nature of this field of research, the laboratory is
designed to be exceptionally flexible and adaptable
to future changes.

The UCSF Department of Pathology’s design utilized
Integrated Project Delivery (IPD) to complete this re-
model on the 4th floor of UCSF’s Health Sciences West
Building. The new state-of-the-art laboratory accom-
modates five Principal Researchers and their 55-per-
son cancer research team in a streamlined light-filled
space, designed with contemporary colors and sleek
detailing. The use of building information modeling
(BIM) and IPD allowed for the project to be bid under
budget, and be completed ahead of schedule.

The UCSF Human Genetics Dry Laboratory’s remodel
project on the ninth floor of the UCSF Medical Sciences
Building involved the modification of existing wet labo-
ratory space into dry labs, offices for research faculty,
associates, and open office cubicles for residents, stu-
dents and administrative staff. The project also includ-
ed upgrades to the building systems, and the rating of
an adjacent corridor.

The Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory projects
update laboratory and office spaces to meet contem-
porary standards of service, comfort, accessibility,
energy conservation and safety. The Design Partner-
ship has worked on several projects with the Lawrence
Berkeley Laboratory Projects including: 1. Building 62
Helios Laser Labs, 2. Building 62 Fire Life Safety Anal-
ysis, 3. Building 70 Laboratory Feasibility, 4. Building
50 Space Survey, 5. Building 46 Engineering Laborato-
ry Remodel, 6. Building 62 Metallurgy Laboratory Re-
model, 7. Building 62 Third Floor Laboratory Remodel,
8. Building 66 Second Floor Laboratory Remodel, 9.
Building 25A Modular Building Addition, 10. Building
74 Life Sciences and 11. Multiple Site Scoping Study.

44 Cost: $4.5M Size: 17,000 sf
The UC Merced Castle Facilities Laboratory improve-
ment project involved consists of full interior demolition
and upgrade to contemporary wet lab bench and sup-
port space, and adaptation of additional space for
day to day lab use. Built in 1989, these structures were
originally used as a warehouse, office and workshop
space. The labs accommodate initial faculty in all sci-
ence disciplines while the campus is under construction,
and will continue to be used by incoming faculty as
specialty lab space as needed on a long-term basis.

The Genentech Bio Laboratory Facility remodel turned
an existing two-story warehouse into their new corpo-
rate headquarters facility and a biotech laboratory
with support services. The design included an interior
two-story “mainstreet” which created a separation
zone between the new laboratory and the existing ad-
ministration department. A new entry lobby and con-
ference center were also added to the existing facility,
while maintaining the ongoing operations of adminis-
tration during the construction process. The use of glass
creates a feeling of transparency on the new addition,
and is a wonderful contrast to the existing warehouse
context. Dennis Sullivan designed this project prior to
joining The Design Partnership.

The UCSF Connie Frank Transplant Center’s design rec-
ognizes the ‘gift of life” and the incredible act of gen-
erosity when one donates their sacred organ to a loved
one. The Center is located on the 7th Floor of a 1960’s
Building that incorporates extraordinary views of the
Golden Gate Bridge and Downtown San Francisco.
The Center was conceived to provide comprehensive
patient services for kidney transplant in a calm and
graceful environment.
