Introduction

A growing number of people have developed an interest in genealogy. Our

society has grown accustomed to instant answers in an age where information is readily

available through the Internet. Unfortunately, early records, such as vital statistics, can

be difficult to obtain through the Internet. Birth, death and marriage records are generally

located at county court houses, state archives or family histories (and bibles). Access to

these records can be restricted to business hours during the week. On the other hand,

local cemeteries are readily accessible to the public most of the time. This fact has made

the gravestone a standard research tool of the genealogist for most grave markers list

birth and/ or death dates. A husband and wife often share a common marker, while family

members can be often be found in close proximity within a common cemetery.

References to family ties (husband, wife, son, daughter, maiden names) or military

service are sometimes curved on the gravestone.

Unfortunately, travelling from cemetery to cemetery can be a time consuming

process that can prove fruitless. Many genealogist I have talked with have spent

countless hours driving to the same cemeteries to collect the same information. The

Garrett County Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) have published two

excellent books (Book I & II, published 1987 and 2004, respectively) on the cemeteries

of Garrett County, Maryland. Volunteers tirelessly travelled the county transcribing the

information from thousands of gravestones. The DAR Book I lists the gravestones as they

were found within the cemetery, while Book II records the people’s names alphabetically.

Book II, which is in part, a supplement to Book I, lists and summarizes many cemeteries


not previously cited. These books have become invaluable tools to many Garrett County

genealogists and are now called the “Graves Books”.

Regrettably, images of Garrett County gravestones are hard to find and not

available to most people. This book presents nearly thousand gravestone images (digital

photographs), containing 1,187 names from 44 cemeteries, of Garrett County, Maryland.

Maps for each cemetery have been included with the images. These images constitute a

portion of gravestones within Garrett County, MD, but represent some of the oldest

families (Browning, Custer, Frantz, Frazee, Friend, Glotfelty, Harvey, Hinebaugh,

McRobie) of the county. These cemeteries, with there gravestones, will be presented in

the same alphabetically order as listed in the DAR Graves Book I & II.

About the Author

Patrick T. Smith was born in Oakland, Maryland and grew up in Western Maryland.

Patrick is a graduate of Frostburg State College (BS), West Virginia University (MS) and

Texas A&M University (PhD). Dr. Smith currently works at the National Institutes of

Health at Bethesda, Maryland as a research chemist. Dr. Smith is descended through

many of these families (Friend, Glotfelty, Hinebaugh, Harvey, Smith & Wilson) and is a

Life Member (#1102) of the FFAA. Dr. Smith lives in Frederick, Maryland with his

wife, Roxanne and daughter Emma Gustav Smith.
