    Dear Brother Bates,

This letter is to inform you on everythingthat is happening here at th^- present.

After several trips to Guatemala to check; onthe money that had heen lost, the money was finallyplaced in I.D.E.S. account. The problem was thatthere was an error in the cable numbers and themoney was sent to the Industrial Banh Instead ofthe Agro Bank.

The work on I.D.E.S. houses is stopped atthe present because once again we are havingtrouble getting cement, the only price we can getit for is I#.90 and that is expensive, the moneywill rxin out quicker. We were told that we mightbe able to get cement today.

I would also like to inform you on a projectthe Church and I are working on. The Church isgiving the money to build a house for a familyhere in town, which in return, once the house isfinished will give us some land in the middle oftown. The value of the land would come to 13000.00quetzales since it Is In town. By building thishouse we will not have to buy this land at thathigh of a price. The house will cost us about|l,500.00. We are praying that the money theChurch has in the hank will be enough to finish,we do know that we are putting a lot of effortInto this project. The papers for the land havealready been signed with a lawyer working on them.

On May 7th a man from here In town wasbaptized, we feel that he is going to be a bigtestimony for those who have not accepted theLord yet. Please pray for him.

Harland Gary spoke to us once about a tripto the states to visit some churches there thissummer, but since then we have heard no moreabout these plans so we do not know what toexpect along that line.

We have the toyota back now. They did apretty good Job in fixing it up. We had to pay

00.00 dollars for some of the repair, so weborrowed it from I.D.E.S. We plan to replacethat money this week when we get It.

Please oray for hu bemause our first childis on the way, for which we thank the Lord.

We plan to mail you the March and Aprilfinacial reports tomorrow. The bank lost ourMarch bank statements, do not know how they manageto do this so often.

I guess this is all for now and we will keepon working for the Lords cause.

    In Christ,

    Gabriel.^ Vickie Segura

    BENEVOLENT EVANGELISM BYCHRISTIAN CHURCHES

    AND CHURCHES OF CHRIST

    ^f'AH CMO*

GUATEMALATHE COMPLETION OF ALL FIFTY HOUSES FOR

RESIDENTS OF SAN RAYMUNDO, GUATEMALA WILLBE ONE OF THE GOALS OF A TEAM OF WORKERSTHAT HAS GONE THERE FOR TWO MONTHS. Theteam is led by Harland Gary who has beenaccompanied by Jim Walker of Flora, 111.and several others (including some stu -dents from Colegio Biblico of Eagle Pass,Texas).

IDES provided the team with $500 to beused in buying cement, sand, etc., to en-ble_thfim_to have the means of construct--ing three more houses to complete the 50originally set as the goal. Jim Walker-aprofessional blQck layer-will have chargeof this effort'.

Missionary Gabriel Segura, :whft is theevangelist"in charge of the work while heleads in the evangelistic efforts, is nowin the States for a couple months whilehis wife delivers their first child. Healso reports that he has arranged with aresident of San Raymundo for obtaining a

rparcel of land in the community for a con-

tng. The land will be given to the con-i gregation in exchange for the building ofi.N a house for the family. Host of the cost

of the project is being borne by the congregation itself in its effort to becomefirmly established in the community.

Gabriel also has sent word that he nowhas gotten the Toyota truck_back from the

, j shop and a preTty gooa job was done with.1 the body repairs. It was badly damagedj! in an accident when a bus ran into it onjj a mounta'in road this past winter. It hadj; kept the bus load of people from falling

over the mountain side when struck.Yet another man has accepted Christ as

Savior in San Raymundo, adding his testimony to that of the Church led by Gabrielin San Raymundo. He was baptised May 7.

Herb Watkins, who spent over a year inSan Raymundo building houses, also plansto go back this sunmer to work if all thedetails are worked out. The entire teamwill spend much time with evangelistic ef'forts while there. They have been invited to preach in several locations duringtheir first visit, and Vacation Bible Ed-cation continues to be a good method forreaching the people.

YOUR PRAYERS ARE REQUESTED ON BEHALFI OF THIS TEAM. Hopefully, after the com-ij pletion of the last house and a church[ building, the construction will be over, t

Harland Gary had requested that Rich -ard Sprague travel to San Raymundo withthe team this year, but due to the surgery that Mrs. Sprague underwent in May,this had to be postponed. A lack of e-nough travel funds also hindered takingthe trip at this time, as well. Thankful-fully, Mrs. Sprague is recovering nicely, but will not be allowed to work at leastuntil July (this is written June 15). Sohubby has been doing much of the housework, cooking, shopping, etc., normallydone by Eleanor.

BAPTISM IN GUATEMALA.. the baptism pictured above took place July 1977we continue to hear of others as reported by Gabriel Segura. THAILANDMilton Bates, our chairman, recently

sent letters of introduction to five individuals who are traveling to Thailandthis summer on their own money. As theyare there, they will be working with agroup of missionaries who are assistingthe refugees with necessities of life. They will be able to help determine theneeds of the people in the camp. Mil -ton writes:

"With this request I mi happy tocomply (request for letters). Ifeel particularly sympathetic toward anyone who has fled from notonly one but from a large group ofterrorists who think nothing oftaking a person's life simply because the person does not sub -scribe to their politics or religion. Brethren, I surely believeat least many of these refugeescan and will appreciate any Christlike kindness extended to themSINCE THEY ARE IN A POSITION TOREALIZE THE GREAT CONTRAST BETWEENCOMMUNISM AND THE CHRISTIAN WAY OFLIFE...REFUGEES ARE CONTINUING TOFLEE INTO THAILAND WEEKLY. THIS ISACONTINUING EMERGENCY." ^IDES continues to send $500 monthly

to Thailand where the missionaries useit to help the people in reconstructingtheir lives. Teachers and students outof Chiang Mai Bible Institute continueto travel to the refugee camp to teachthe Word of God to all willing to hear.Several hundred believers have been uncovered in the camp, and efforts to instruct them more perfectly in the Wayof the Lord are underway. FUNDS CON -TINUE TO COME IN TO THE IDES TREASURY,BUT NEVER ENOUGH TO DO WHAT NEEDS TO BEDONE IN THE HELPING OF PEOPLE.

    CHRISTIAN DISASTER

    RELIEF CHIP-IN

We have had several requests concern -ing some form of fund-raising program inwhich churches could get their people participating as a whole. FOLLOWING IS AN I-DEA THAT MIGHT HAVE SOME APPEAL TO MANY. APROJECT THAT WILL INVOLVE EVERY AGE GROUP.This will make everyone feel they are contributing to the fight against hung^er, disasters, etc.

    ..ALL CHURCH CHIP-IN AGAINST SUFFERING..

    I. First, collect as many Pringle potatochip cans with lids as you have families

    in the church.

II. Have group projects to decorate thesecans with pictures of people, of food or

anything you feel is appropriate. This isa good V B S handcraft project. Ladies canuse it as a project for an afternoon meeting, or youth groups, Sunday School classes can do the handwork on the cans duringtheir get-togethers. Cut slot in lid.III. Put information about IDES on them.

We will supply you with enough sheetsof information for every can you make.

IV. Set a date for which the cans are tobe handed out to the families in the

church, and have a special sermon anddedication time towards the benevolence

work of IDES. Take the cans home.

    V. Set a date for reaping the harvest ofgiving, allowing enough time for what

you feel is needed to give the church afair time in which to give.

VI. Many families place such banks on thekitchen table where they will be remindedto put something in daily. Even childrenbecome aware of the needs of others whenthey are allowed to share in the effort.VII. Provide further information to thecongregation during the time of giving sothe people will be informed with what ishappening at that time.

VIII. Finally, when the date for gathering in the harvest comes, let everyone beinvolved by placing the entire can and Itscontents in a prominent place in the worship service, and the preacher deliveringa sermon on the subject of SHARING or ofBENEVOLENCE. Acts 11:27-30 could be oneof the texts used.

We would like to hear from those of youwho would like to use the above project. If you want material, let us know quantities and we will send it to you.

    IT'S UP TO YOUl
