seek, share, rejoice - pastor's letterDear Parishioners,

“On this mountain, the Lord of hosts will provide for all peoples.”

The opening line from this weekend’s liturgy is a great introduction to the challenge of stewardship. To become a faithful steward begins with a deep sense of gratitude. Look at all The Lord has provided for us!

We are surrounded by signs of God’s grace and love for

us. We all have challenges and burdens that must be faced, but we must never take for granted His gra-cious presence in our lives. To be a faithful steward is to feel this acknowledgement that I have been blest by God and I ultimately would have nothing without His generous love.

Stewardship calls us to a faithful and deliberate deci-sion to be generous with our gifts of time, talent and treasure. I am reminded of a conviction of Cardinal George, “all we will have in heaven is what we gave away on our earthly journey”.

This weekend and next, is our annual refl ection on stewardship. There are times when the parish fam-ily must discern how each member will be generous with the sharing of time, talent and treasure. Next week, you will receive a copy of our parish annual report. It is a wonderful expression of the results of the many sacrifi ces and gifts of parishioners when it comes to the sharing of one’s time, talent and treasure.

Like your budget at home, costs continue to rise. We have expanded our ministerial outreach this year with launching a youth ministry program. This program will need signifi cant support to be effective.

Soon, you will receive a mailing regarding our Planned Offertory Program (POP). As we move

toward being a stewardship-based faith community, we need the participation of everyone to share their time, talent, and treasure to the ability they can. Everyone, individually, and as a family, needs to sit with and pray over the gifts I can make to OLPH this coming year. The POP helps us plan our budget with a better idea of what our income will be. A decision of one’s annual gift also helps insure parish support when the holidays hit or vacation or business take you out of town.

In determining one’s annual gift, it is crucial to take into consideration our First Fruits Program, whereby 6% of our weekly offertory is distributed to each of the 17 mandated second collections. We still take up second collections on Mission Appeal Sunday, Catholic Charities and the Catholic Campaign for Human Development. The First Fruits program also makes possible our parish’s fi nancial contribution to our Sharing parishes. We also are asked to support special appeals during the year.

More and more parishioners are choosing automatic payment options with their bank debit or credit cards. There is information on how to arrange that if you are interested.

Thank you for your prayerful discernment during this stewardship time. I am deeply grateful.

This past Friday we rejoiced as Sr. Paulanne was honored as the Heart of Mercy Catholic Charities Awardee. How loved and respected she is! Her wit-ness to Christ’s love has been, and continues to be, an inspiration.

Congratulations to the OLPH Cross Country Team that has qualifi ed for the State Championships. Congratulations to Steve Janowski, Tiffany Chupaila, P.J. Weiland, Virginia Khamis and Luke Lato who completed the Chicago Marathon and raised a lot of money for Mercy Home for Boys and Girls.

Each week’s collections will be delivered to one of our Sharing parishes, start-ing with St. James, then St. Sabina’s, Our Lady of Tepeyac, with the fi nal weekend’s collection going to St. Philip Neri. We’ll highlight special food items each parish pantry is requesting in future bulletins.

Please plan to participate in this important month-long drive. Last year’s event brought in over 41,000 cans of food! Let’s work to match this number and make Thanksgiving a time of abundance at the pan-tries we serve.

Altar Server Ministry

Learning the WayServing at the altar is a privilege for many boys and girls here at OLPH. Servers are given the responsibility for carrying the cross and candles in procession and assisting the priests at the liturgy. The actions of the altar servers highlight the ceremony and rituals that are so much a part of the liturgy that we celebrate.

Young girls and boys from the parish in grades 5-8 are welcome and encouraged to participate as Altar Servers. Several training sessions are available for all boys and girls in grades 5-8. Please choose a day and time that works best for you and email your preference. All sessions will be offered in the Church.

Tuesday, October 17, 3:00 pm, 4:30 pm or 6:30 pm Saturday, October 21, 9:00 am or 1:00 pm

We will plan on having six students per session, please RSVP with your preference as soon as you can.

Creation Care Ministry

Embracing the Fallen (Leaves)Don’t feel obligated to rake up every leaf in your yard this fall. Leave leaves on the ground — they have a lot of benefi t to wildlife and your garden. From a gardening perspective, fallen leaves offer a double benefi t. Leaves form a natural mulch that helps suppress weeds and at the same time fertilize the soil as they break down. The leaves of one large shade tree can be worth as much as $50 of plant food and humus. Pound for pound, the leaves of most trees contain twice as many minerals as manure. Why spend money on mulch and fertilizer when you can make your own?

For the leaves you rake, turn them into mulch gold quicker with these tips:

Add extra nitrogen to your leaf compost, such as manure, dried blood, cottonseed meal, bone meal and Agrinite. Nitrogen is the one factor that starts compost heap heating up, and leaves certainly don’t contain enough nitrogen to provide suffi cient food for bacteria.

Grind or shred your leaves. Put them in a garbage can and shred with a weed whacker, or make small piles and run over them with a lawnmower.

seek, share, rejoice - youth ministry notes

A Dynamic Experience of FaithA frequent statement by young people about Mass or Religious Education is “BORING”. Of course, we can ar-gue that church is not meant to entertain. Often though there is a lack of understanding of the Sacrament and the relationship between Church or Mass and living out our faith.

A recent study by the Catholic based Center for Applied Research in the Apostolate (CARA) has found that 13 is the average age young Catholics become nonbelievers or no longer fi nd organized religion valuable. Some attest that it is the incongruence between science and religion. Others say that going to Mass and Religious Education in no way relates to their life.

The Archdiocese of Chicago is sponsoring a daylong experience for 6th-9th grade students on Saturday, October 21. Last year, over 1,000 attended and the Spirit was obviously present. And participants had fun! There was lots of music, dancing, faith sharing, the Sacrament of Reconciliation for those who wanted it, and a special Mass celebrated by Cardinal Cupich. The event is entitled “Holy Fire” reminiscent of the Holy Spirit and Pentecost.

Participants are touched by the realization that they are part of a much bigger reality and being Catholic is something they share with many others. They are challenged during the event to make their Catholic faith a part of their daily lives, helping them to grow in that faith and with prayer and service to deepen their relation-ship with God, with Jesus, and with the Church.

OLPH Youth Ministry is taking a busload to the event at the University of Illinois Chicago Pavilion on Saturday, October 21, leaving at 8:45 a.m. and returning at 5:30 p.m. ($35 registration fee. Scholarships are available.) It is a particularly awesome experience for those preparing for Confi rmation.

Sign your junior high student up today. Contact me at [email protected] with concerns or questions or to register. Encourage them to invite friends and classmates to come along.

This will be one of the most impactful events of Jr. High Youth Ministry for this year. Don’t miss this opportunity!Randy McGraw

Myth vs. Fact
