Increased compaction and glazing of the furrow side walls may result. Plugging between opener disks and gauge wheels can be a serious problem. Worn gauge wheel arm pivots are the main cause by allowing the tires to pull away from the opener disks. Badly worn seed tube guards allow the disks to flex farther inward and contribute to the problem. The RKP guards should reduce this problem. The nearly constant width and the flat bottom of the furrow produced by the RKP guard will allow the seed to more consistently reach a uniform depth. The flat bottom will not be compacted or glazed which should result in more uniform emergence. Guides keep seed tube centered on guard. Wear plates provide several times more wear area than OEM Fertilizer Tube Attachment uses same nuts and bolts as guide to attach to guard. Furrow width is maintained and seed tube is protected many times longer than with OEM guards. A 5/16” rivet and capscrew clamp bushings between sheet metal halves of shank assembly. An excellent installation will be realized even with badly worn holes. Special bushings with 3/8” hardware are available for planters that have been repaired with the new JD guard that uses 3/8” roll pins. If 5/16” holes are badly worn you can repair them by drilling them to 3/8” (no larger).
