Standard Industrial FixturesUnderstanding IP Ratings

IP Definitions The IP Code, International Protection Marking, IEC standard 60529, sometimes interpreted as Ingress Protection Marking, classifies and rates the degree of protection provided by mechanical casings and electrical enclosures against intrusion, dust, accidental contact, and water.

SolidLevel of Ingress Protection

WaterLevel of Ingress Protection

1 Protected against a solid object greater than 50mm, such as a hand. 1 Protected against vertical dripping water.

Limited liquid entry.

2 Protected against a solid object greater than 12mm, such as a finger. 2 Protected against vertical dripping water when

tilted up 15o. Limited liquid entry.

3 Protected against a solid object greater than 2.5mm, such as a screwdriver. 3 Protected against vertical spraying water at an

angle up to 60o. Limited liquid entry.

4 Protected against a solid object greater than 1mm, such as most screws and wires.

4 Protected against Water splashing againstany direction with no harmful effect. Limited liquid entry.

5 Dust protected. Prevents ingress of dust sufficient to cause harm. 5 Protected against jets of water from all

directions. Limited liquid entry.

6 Dust tight. No ingress of dust. 6 Protected against strong jets of water from all directions. Limited liquid entry.

Examples:IP67: Able to protect against Immersion up to 1m.IP66: Able to protect against powerful water jets.

7 Protected against the effects of water immersion between 15cm &1m.

8 Protected against the effects of water immersion between 15cm &1m.

9 Protected against against high temperature, high pressure water and stream.

DEMANDING Fixture | SolutionsUnderstanding NSF Ratings

NSF Certification Location Descriptions Typical Lighting Applications

NON-FOODZONE

Exposure:• No direct contact with food products• Cleaning solventsDesign considerations: • Resistance to cleaning solvents (on lens, housing, etc.)• Glass breakage (prevent contamination of food products).

• Kitchens • Food storage• Dry process areas• Damp process areas - no drip possibility

SPLASHZONE

Exposure:• No direct contact with food products• High-pressure wash-downs Design considerations: • Durable and water-shedding • Resistance to harsh cleaning solvents • Glass breakage (prevent contamination of food products).

• Wet or damp process areas • High pressure purging or decontamination used• Areas using hose -washdown

FOODZONE

Exposure:• Direct contact with food products• Full sanitation required

Category not typically used for lighting

Zonal Definitions In order to achieve NSF (National Sanitation Foundation) Certification, Current’s fixtures and the manufacturing facili-ties developing them must pass a series of complex requirements provided by the FDA and USDA.

In general, lighting equipment falls under the “Special Equipment/Devices, NSF C-2” listing procedure. This C-2 procedure requires a thorough analysis of the physical design, the distinct properties used by the manufacturer and production of the fixture. Lastly, NSF also investigates the dependability of the manufacturer and its assembly process as it pertains to the listed fixture.

Below are 3 certifiable zones in food processing applications, the first two of which apply to lighting fixtures: NON-FOOD ZONE, SPLASH ZONE and FOOD ZONE.
