Welcome to St. Augustine, the nations oldest continuously occupied city, sur-rounded by beautiful beaches, waterways and historic sites. Even older than Jamestown or Plymouth Rock, this is a place where you can learn history by listening to storytellers dressed in armor, deerskin or homespun cloth. The Old City has the look of a European village but with 21st century shops, galleries and restaurants. Time travelers can visit museums in the oldest wooden and coquina block dwellings, and then step inside the grand public buildings of Flaglers railroad era.Just a short drive away, outdoor adventure seekers can go hiking in a nature preserve bicycling on the beach or kayaking on placid waterways.Use this guide to find out whats and what insiders are talking about this season. You may notice some friendly but boister-ous pirates hanging around. They some-times startle unsuspecting landlubbers and can raise the hairs on the back of your

neck. Theyre usually found on the pirate ship, the Black Raven, docked down-town. At the St. Augustine Pirate and Treasure Museum, they are guarding authentic pirate booty. At the Fountain of Youth Archaeological Park volunteers sifting through oyster shells at a dig discovered the wall of a building where Native Americans lived at least 300 years ago.At the Old Florida Museum, take an interactive trip to the 16th century when native Timucan Indians helped the Spanish adapt to the New World. Listen to early music, touch Spanish weapons and tools, and learn how the city survived to modern times. At the World Golf Hall of Fame, where tours give first-hand accounts of golf s defining moments, the IMAX Theater now shows Digital 3D movies.Youll find many valuable coupons for local attractions, stores and restaurants at the back of this guide. Its our way of saying welcome and inviting you to get the most out of your visit.

Built on the dreams of explorers, colonists and railroad men, St. Augustine has a lot of historic places to absorb. But beyond the city gates, there are many outdoor activities to keep you busy: hiking, fishing, surfing, and boating, plus legendary golf.Climb the lighthouse or take a helicopter ride to get an overview of the surrounding waterways and sparkling sand beaches. For a laid back way to explore the waters of nature preserves, rent a canoe or a kayak. And dont forget your camera.Saltwater charter boat excursions are just minutes away. For freshwater action, friendly marinas on the Matanzas River will rent boats and tackle too. This is also an ideal time of year to play a round at one of the world-class golf courses in the area or tour the World Golf Hall of Fames collections of memorabilia.Curious travelers will be more than satisfied with the many museums and sites that reveal Spanish, British and American history. Expect to be awed by the 208-foot steel cross at the Mission of Nombre De Dios where Pedro Menendez established the first settlement and met Timucuan Indians in 1565. The thunder of exploding cannons at the old Spanish fort is a reminder of the many battles the city survived. Before you leave the city, visit the San Sebastian Winery for a free tour followed by tastings of their award winning wines. Tear out the valuable coupons in the back pages of this guide and keep them handy. Our business owners love to give you a discount.
At the end of the day, relax with a horse-drawn carriage ride, listen to the echo of hooves on European-style streets and return to that simpler time when the citys pace was limited by the speed of a horse. If you dare, ghost tours are loaded with tales of pirates lurking in taverns and broken hearted lovers roaming upstairs bedrooms. Prepare to be enlightened or frightenedsweet dreams!

Natures still rules in this remote section of Anastasia Island. Within minutes of arriving at the parks welcome center, notice how the wind has shaped the trees that make a canopy of shade above your head. Yet its easy to explore the boardwalk trail through a maritime forest of oaks and red bays. Across the water stands the solitary figure of Fort Matansas, completed in 1742 to guard the southern approach to St. Augustine during the time Spain was struggling to keep its hold on its colonies.
Children will enjoy the free ferry to the fort across the river to Rattlesnake Island. The tour boat captain explains how a handful of soldiers manned the fort. Climb the stairs of the coquina shell-rock structure to see the inlet and the cannons that never failed to turn ships back from this remote outpost. The ranger guided tours, a short movie and special re-enactments of historic events appeal to all ages.
Located 14 miles south of St. Augustine off A1A, the Oceanside of the park is a dry coastal scrub ecosystem thats home to the endangered Anastasia Beach Mouse. When you see the logo SAiRA, you know they are committed to serving fresh, regional fare. Locals go out of their way to visit these friendly, affordable eateries.Seaside pubs mix tropical concoctions with tequila, fresh grapefruit juice and fruits to wash down fried shrimp in a basket. Seafood fresh from Florida waters is always an especially good choice. If you are looking for romantic places to dine, try a deck overlooking the water, a garden with a cascading fountain or a pub where candlelight throws shadows on aged brick walls. After dark join the local crowd downtown for a nightcap or dessert, and then stroll down near the Bridge of Lions for the best view of the city lights against the night sky.

An afternoon stroll in St. Augustine makes you feel like a time traveler with total access to the latest clothing, jewelry and accessories.Think of the historic district as a giant department store, only there are streets with shops instead of aisles. And wherever you ramble you are never far from a caf where you can take a break and stop for lunch. The Old City is a remarkable place to shop for old maps, French and English antiques, nautical artifacts, books, collectibles and vintage linens. Specialty shops also carry an excellent assortment of precious gem jewelry and home furnishings.Beyond the city is a full spectrum of beach emporiums stocked with sportswear. And if you love designer labels at bargain prices, an upscale outlet mall is just a short drive away.On St. George Street some old houses have quaint second stories that extend out over the street. Now they are shops and restaurants, and its a pleasure to explore them because theres no auto traffic on this pedestrian friendly street. The oldest byway in the city, Aviles Street, is a treasure, a special corner of the city where the sidewalks have room for caf tables and benches. When the bricked street was restored recently, the old bricks were carefully removed, cleaned and then re-laid. Along the street youll find art galleries, a wine bar and boutiques. For historic
gifts drop by the St. Augustine Historical Society Research Library shop at the corner of Artillery Lane. Within comfortable walking distance you can explore many galleries displaying sculpture, photography, and paintings of sublime Florida landscapes by emerging artists. And if you find a special treasure to remember your trip by, many places will ship it home for you.

Aviles Street is the pride of the Old City community, a special corner of town where streets are narrow and the people coming and going through the doors of shops, sidewalk cafs and a wine-bar are not in a hurry. Benches provide a comfortable place to meet any time of day.It is the oldest byway in the city, which several years ago inspired a sister city agreement to promote cultural ties with Aviles, Spain. Over the years there have been many exchanges that have enriched the people of both cities.
When you stroll down the street youll notice graceful streetlights and a recently renovated bricked roadway. Each age-worn brick was carefully removed during construction and cleaned so that it could be re-used and placed back on the street.Come down at night when the shops, pubs and galleries glow with lights from within. Relax over a light supper and take time to browse through bins for an art print to remind you of your visit back in time.
