Kaye Becker of North Olmsted is one of the area’s original soccer moms.

Back in the ‘70’s, Kaye and husband Bud were instrumental in founding the North Olmsted Soccer Organization (NOSO) and the annual NOSO Cup International Tourna-ment.

Now 76, a fall at home this year had Kaye worried that her role - now as a soccer grand-ma - was coming to an end.

“I fell. I wasn’t hurt, but I was getting afraid to go out anymore. I wondered what would happen to me if I fell again,” she said.

With the right help from the St. John Medical Center Balance Center, Kaye has re-gained her confidence and is getting back in the game.

From Soccer Mom to Soccer Grandma.....SJMC Balance Center Keeps North Olmsted Woman in the Game

“I hated to give up the things I love to do,” she said. Her primary care physician recommended the course of therapy at the Balance Center.

Kaye had her bal-ance issues diagnosed by the Center’s NeuroCom Balance Manager System - computer-based high tech equipment that offers a three phased approach to identifying the cause of the problem and giving individuals the tools they need to maintain an active lifestyle.

With the help of the NeuroCom equipment - where Kaye stands in a booth supported by a har-ness and completes objec-

tives that look like she is playing a video game with her feet - she has made re-markable progress.

“Therapy like this al-lows people to maintain the quality of life they want and their ability to keep doing the things they like to do,” explains Michele Hippler Brant PT, DPT, Outpatient Lead Therapist. “Improved balance is also an excellent preventive health measure as it helps protect patients from potentially dangerous falls.”

Kaye’s NeuroCom therapy is augmented with physical therapy at the clin-ic and exercises she can do at home.

“A lot of the problem is that people just don’t practice their balance,” said Hippler Brant. “As things get worse, it becomes a vi-cious cycle.

“When you have a bal-ance problem and make an

investment in your health, that prevents more medical costs down the line.”

“I didn’t want to not be able to do what I want to do,” said Kaye. “But I was having trouble even stand-ing in the shower. No one ever said what was wrong with me. They just said to use a cane.”

For patients like Kaye Becker, the Balance Center at St. John Medical Center means the difference be-tween becoming a happy soccer grandma or sitting on the sidelines after a life-time of being one of our area’s leading soccer moms.

“I even get out of the car differently now,” says Kaye confidently.

The St. John Medi-cal Center Balance Center is located at 26908 Detroit Road, Suite 300, in West-lake. Please phone (440) 414-6050 to learn more.

Kaye Becker receives guidance from Michele Hippler Brant PT, DPT, Out-patient Lead Therapist at the St. John Medical Center Balance Center.

by Dr. Louis Malcmacher of The Healthy SmileNo More Lines.......We, at The Healthy Smile, really

hope that your summer is going well. We have all been the beneficiaries of such beautiful weather this summer that is hard not to want to be outside as much as possible.

Many of our patients come in for cosmetic dentistry and are inter-ested in making their teeth look more youthful, straighter and whiter. We have a number of conservative alter-natives to go ahead and accomplish this with no prepara-tion porcelain veneers, teeth whitening, and bonded resin restorations. Many times when we complete the process of giving patients a great looking smile, patients start looking at the areas around their teeth much more closely.

One of the biggest concerns that many patients have before or after they do any sort of cosmetic dentistry is something called smokers’ lines. These are the deep or fine lines that radiate from the edge of the lip around their mouth. As many of you know, you don’t have to be a smoker to have smokers’ lines. These lines are created by the constant movement and contraction of the lip muscle. The lip muscle is one of the most active muscles in the body because it is used for so many functions, including

facial expression, eating, pursing your lips, drink-ing, talking, and being in constant use during the day. Smoking does make these lines worse simply because it constantly dries out the area and that makes the problem more compli-cated.

One of the most suc-cessful ways that we treat smokers’ lines in our office is with the use of Botox, which is placed into the lip muscle. This reduces the intensity of the muscle ac-tion just enough so that the skin can smooth out all by itself. Another way that we treat smokers’ lines is also by putting a little bit of der-mal filler right underneath the lines to restore some

volume around the mouth. In our office, we routinely use Botox and dermal fill-ers around the mouth while the patient is already numb for their dental work so that these procedures are totally pain free. In this day and age, cosmetic dentistry is not just about the teeth any more, but is all about the supporting facial tissues where we can create ideal lip lines and smile lines.

Call us today at 440-892-1810 to talk about any of your dental concerns – we offer a free consultation. We would love to meet you and help you get a beauti-ful and healthy smile for the summer. We are here to help you smile.

There is a lot happening this year at Wagner’s of Westlake. It started with an updated name, refresh-ing of the five ballrooms and a new All-Inclusive Dinner Package featuring a sit-down dinner and open bar.

What has not changed is the quality of service Wagner’s has provided since 1965. “We had another successful Easter and Mother’s Day serving over two thousand guests,” says Shirley Wagner, a 25-year vet-eran in event planning.

Back by popular demand is their Father’s Day Buffet. Jeannot Chiconie, who has been the Execu-tive Chef at Wagner’s for eighteen year, is cooking up a hearty menu of ribs, wings, stuffed pork chops, pulled pork and an array of side dishes and desserts.

“Most everyone has walked through the doors of Wagner’s to attend a wedding reception, prom, class reunion, shower or corporate event in our 48 years catering to the needs of our community,” says Jack Wagner.

You can call 440-871-8800 for reservations to the Father’s Day Buffet.

The Watoto Children’s Choir acts as Watoto am-bassadors to raise aware-ness about the plight of the orphaned and vulnerable children of Africa. Watoto is a holistic child-care solu-tion to serve needs of Af-rica and her people.

Each of the children in the choir has suffered the loss of one or both par-ents. As they shared testi-mony on their individual challenges and experience, many audience members could be seen wiping away tears.

They live in Watoto Children’s Villages where they receive the care and nurture they need to grow up as productive citizens of their own country. “I wish to grow up and become an American lawyer!’ ex-claimed one young singer to the delight of the audi-ence.

With vibrant, original African music, dance rou-tines and life-transforming stories, the tour is indica-tive of the new generation of leaders emerging out of Watoto.

“Through the choir’s Concert of Hope, we share a message of transforma-tion by telling the story of Africa’s rescued orphans and women. We hope to reach out to audiences with the message of Christ’s

healing power,” says Gary Skinner, WatotoFounder.

Since its inception, 60 choirs have traveled glob-ally, providing the children

with a bigger worldview, an unusual opportunity they would otherwise never get. To preview a performance of the choir visit: www.

“These three short sen-tences sum up my thoughts and feelings as I conclude my time with you as your pastor this Friday, 14 June, which is also my 38th anni-versary of ordination to the priesthood,” said Fr. Tim in his final homily Sunday.

“We have accom-plished a lot together and I hope that I have helped the members of our Saint Joseph Parish Family to grow as loving disciples of Jesus Christ and grateful stewards of God’s bountiful blessings,” said Fr. Tim. He concludes his time at St. Jo-seph 18 years to the day of his initial assignment.

“You have all helped me to grow as His priest. And I will take with me the experience I have gained here as I become the pas-tor of Saint Vincent de Paul Parish in Akron on Satur-day, 15 June, the 38th an-niversary of my First Mass,” said Fr. Tim.

Succeeding Fr. Tim is Fr. Ron Wearsch.

“I conclude today as I began with these three sim-ple but heartfelt statements: ‘Thank you! I love you! And please pray for me, as I will for you,” said Fr. Tim, who admitted to offering a short homily in order to “pull back his emotions.”

A steady stream of well-wishers stopped by Fr. Tim’s Farewell Open House Saturday to say thank you. His reassignment arose from a letter he wrote to Bishop Richard Lennon almost two years ago, offer-ing his service wherever it is most needed.

A standing ovation warmly thanked Fr. Tim after his final 11 a.m. Mass Sunday. He will be dearly missed and takes the love of a community with him.

Seidman Cancer Cen-ter at University Hospitals Westlake Health Center has upgraded its radiation treatment facility to pro-vide state-of-the-art outpa-tient radiation therapy.

The newly installed system offers advanced im-age guidance and treatment accuracy which enables enhanced targeting of the cancer while simultaneous-ly maximally shielding ad-jacent normal tissue from potentially harmful effects of the X-Ray beams.

“There was a 3-month process to install this state-of-the-art equipment,” re-ports Joel Elconin, MD, clinical director of Radia-tion Oncology at the UH Westlake Health Center. “It has been in service since March 18 and to my knowl-edge it is the newest linear acceleration machine in all of Cleveland.”

Intensity Modulated Radiation Therapy (IMRT) is a specialized form of treatment in which the ra-diation dose is delivered us-ing small “beamlets” which are rapidly turned on and off and delivered from vari-ous angles around the body. This technique effectively “sculpts” the high-dose ra-diation area into irregular shapes to match an indi-vidual patient’s anatomy which can lessen potential side-effect of treatment and also allow for a higher dose of radiation which can in-crease the chance for cure.

The Varian iX provides the most precise treatment delivery available because it uses both X-ray and cone-beam CAT scan technology to image the tumor area daily immediately prior to each treatment to enable the physician and treat-ment team to optimally and

quickly align the patient so that the tumor is in the “crosshairs” of the machine with certainty. Image guid-ance also allows for track-ing the response to treat-ment (i.e. tumor shrinkage)

in selected cases.In addition, Varian’s

“RapidArc” innovation pro-vides faster treatment using a technique called volumet-ric modulated arc therapy.

“A big advantage is pa-tients are treated for a much smaller interval of time now. Three to five minutes is all that is needed in treat-ments that used to take 15-20 minutes,” said Dr. Elco-nin..

The faster delivery ensures that patient move-ment and internal tumor movement will be at a minimum which increases the accuracy of treatment and also greatly improves patient comfort and con-venience. “This optimizes treatment of the target zone as the patient does not have to remain stationary as long,” said Dr. Elconin.

The Seidman Cancer Center at UH Westlake Health Center treats adults

with most types of cancer and lymphoma.

As clinical director of Radiation Oncology at the UH Westlake Health Cen-ter, located at 960 Clague Road in Westlake at the intersection of Clague and I-90, Dr. Elconin may be reached at (440) 250-2011. He welcomes inquiries from anyone who is in-terested in learning more about this exciting devel-opment in radiation cancer medicine.

The Girl Scouts were able to take 250 coupons to a local retailer and bought 250 cans of Spaghetti Os for less than $3. total out of pocket. They donated the 250 cans to the SJMC Out-reach office.

The Cadette Troup has 5 girls entering the 8th grade. They are working on their Silver Award, the highest award a Cadette Girl Scout can earn. Girl Scouts’ highest awards are designed to help girls and their team make a lasting, positive difference in their community.

The defeat of last month’s Westlake Schools operating levy by just 44 votes is about to cause mil-lions in misery for the dis-trict.

The first wave of cuts amounting to $940,000 was recommended by the Board of Education Monday.

With no new money coming in, at current ex-penditures, the district is looking at a $2.9 million shortfall by the 2014-15 school year. A tentative plan for cuts was announced at the May 13 Board of Edu-cation meeting.

The following posi-tions would be eliminated: 3-5 elementary positions, Middle school gifted coor-dinator, One high school Social Studies staff mem-ber, High school consumer science position, 1.5 special education position, Half-time guidance counselor, Part-time physical educa-tion position, and an El-ementary art position

Other reductions in-clude: Reducing preschool coordination program by 33%, Cut summer school administration by 50%, Not replacing the retiring gifted math/AP coordinator, Re-ducing bus transportation to those who live beyond one mile of their school (including kindergarten).

The reductions, for-mally presented at the June 10 Board of Education meeting, impact adminis-tration (8%), teaching posi-tions (64%), classified posi-tions (11%) and operations (16%)

As cuts are imple-mented over the next few months, the district will try to learn why the May oper-ating levy failed. Westlake

The St. Edward High track team takes to the podium after winning the school’s second straight Div. I track championship at the state meet last weekend in Columbus.

Other Ed’s place win-ners included three sec-onds - junior Steele Wasik

If you are one of our clients……A tree has been planted in your name

In April of 2008, Ohio Family Realty initiated the Lifetime Real-tor Program as an effort to help their clients during the tempo-rary downturn in the housing market.

Ohio Family Realty was able to assist 249 families through this program! Our Lifetime Realtor Program allowed us to sell clients’ old houses for free if Ohio Family Realty represented them on the purchase of their new home.

Because home prices have stabilized and our local hous-ing market is improving, we are now limiting our Lifetime Realtor Program to the 249 families currently enrolled in the program. This will become effective April 1, 2013.

We appreciate our customer loyalty and look forward to working with you in the future!
