BACKGROUNDER Pups Who Pack began when backpack designer Maggie Welsh (28) made a matching dog backpack harness for her two dogs as a fun break from her handbag line Maggie Modena in the summer of 2015. After several prototypes, testing and many inquiries about where to pick up the dog pack, she launched her packs on Kickstarter in November, 2015. Thirty days later, Maggie’s dog backpack was successfully funded. Since Kickstarter, Pups Who Pack dog backpacks are sold worldwide through her website (shop. pupswhopack.com) and in select stores including Shop Dog & Co in NYC, Contempest Dog in Chicago, IL, and Discover Dogs in Vancouver, Canada. Maggie’s dog packs have been featured in Brit + Co, Bustle, Gotham Magazine, ViralNova, Dogster, Modern Dog Magazine as well as many insta-famous dogs including Doug the Pug, Carrie Fisher’s dog Gary, PS.NY., Homer Puglicious, Bubba The Pug, and The Daily Walter. Maggie graduated with two degrees in fashion: a Bachelors from the University of Wisconsin- Madison’s Textile and Apparel program and an Associate’s in Accessory Design from New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology. After graduating, Maggie landed a job designing handbags for brands such as Nicole Miller, Lucky Brand, Franco Sarto, and Jessica Simpson. Maggie returned to Madison in the Summer of 2013 and began prototyping her first handbag line on a laser cutter at makerspace Sector67, as well as cultivating her knowledge in marketing working at high-end women’s boutique iona. In February, 2015 she launched and sold her first handbag line, Maggie Modena, at iona. Although Maggie designs for dogs, given her background in fashion, she makes it a point to make her dog gear a perfect blend of utility and style. Maggie designs each bag’s textile herself through a mix of photos, drawings and paintings refined in Photoshop and releases them in limited quantities (1/50), just as you’d see art. Each dog backpack has the same utility of a harness, with the added bonus of a compartment for extra goodies: waste bags, sweatshirt, snacks, collapsable water bowl, ball, toys, water and more. This way dog owners can always be ready for walks, hiking, weekending and adventuring with their beloved pets. This holiday, Maggie will be expanding her line beyond dog backpacks and into other dog accessories and dog lover gear. In addition to Maggie’s “Signature” limited edition Pups Who Pack line, Maggie will introduce her “Staple” dog backpack line for the 2016 holidays. The Staple line will include three dog backpack styles and be offered at an even more affordable price, in larger quantities, exclusively on her website in November. Pups Who Pack are proudly made in Milwaukee, WI, by a husband and wife manufacturing duo. Each print style is offered in limited quantities, released twice yearly in spring and fall, with special commemorative editions released in the summer and holiday seasons. MEDIA KIT
Maggie Welsh is the owner, founder and designer of Pups Who Pack by Maggie Modena. From designing textiles each season, patterning new styles for prototyping, production management, wholesale account and sales management and press outreach, this is Maggie’s full-time gig. Maggie deviated from designing for the mass handbag market in NYC in 2013 to focus on the textile/art side of fashion as well as cultivating a local fashion scene in her hometown of Madison, WI. From establishing her business there, to implementing a sewing space in local makerspace Sector67, to founding the Madison Fashion Network, Maggie contributes as much as she can to the Madison fashion and maker scene.
Maggie launched her dog backpacks under a spin-off of her Maggie Modena line, Pups Who Pack, on Kickstarter in 2015 where she was fully funded by 121 backers, mostly in the US and Canada. She has been featured in Bustle, Brit + Co, Modern Dog Magazine, Dogster, NBC 15 Morning News, and Gotham Magazine and endorsed by many insta-dogs.
Maggie graduated with two degrees in design: one Bachelor’s in Science from the University of Wisconsin - Madison’s Textile and Apparel Design program and the other from the Fashion Institute of Technology with an Associate’s in Accessory Design. After graduation, Maggie worked as an Associate Handbag Designer in NYC designing for brands such as Nicole Miller, Lucky Brand, Franco Sarto and Jessica Simpson. Maggie moved back to Madison, WI in 2013 and worked as a Marketing and Brand Strategist for a high-end women’s boutique, iona, learning the ins-and-outs of starting your own business. While working at iona, Maggie began to prototype her first handbag line, cutting every piece herself on a laser cutter.
Maggie currently lives in Madison, WI and on the road in her camper several months a year. The majority of her bags are made in Milwaukee, WI.
