Mock funeral gives protesters chance to say farewellTREASURE COAST — The solemn

sounds of dirges will fill the air, mourners in black will grieve, and ahearse will lead the way as peoplegather to bemoan the passing of abeloved friend: the Indian RiverLagoon.

This Saturday, river warriors willreplicate an event held in 1970: a mockfuneral for the area’s wrecked water-ways. Together with Megan Remickand a whole host of other environ-mental activists, Stuart residentMichelle Roberts decided it was hightime for another powerful symbol toraise awareness.

At 9 a.m., anyone and everyonewho cares about the future of the

rivers and estuaries in South Florida isencouraged to make their way toPhipps Park in Stuart for a mock funer-al service that starts at 10 a.m.

“Were in mourning over all the ani-mals that died last year and continueto die,” said Ms. Roberts.

Well-known environmentalists likeIndian Riverkeeper Marty Baum,Jacqui Thurlow-Lippisch and FloridaOceanographic Society’s Mark Perry, who attended the original mock funer-al in 1970, will deliver the eulogy. Theyare individuals who have been fightingfor the river for years, know it like fam-ily, and will mourn it like family.

Following residents’ goodbyes, aprocessional, complete with coffin, will weave its way to the nearby St.Lucie Locks to show dissatisfaction

with the Army Corps of Engineers’recent actions.

The Army Corps of Engineersrefused to sign off on the Central Ever-glades Planning Project that had givenmany hope for the region, thus delay-ing the project.

“We felt like it was a big setback, wefelt like we were really moving for-ward,” said Ms. Roberts.

The project would reduce haz-ardous discharges from Lake Okee-chobee by moving more water southand away from the St. Lucie River andIndian River Lagoon.

The South Florida Water Manage-ment District has endorsed the $2 bil-lion plan and agreed to help fund it,but the project is stalled pending asign off from the Army Corps of Engi-

neers.Ms. Roberts’ hope is that they can

fill the park with river warriors whowon’t stop until they’ve made a differ-ence.

“We want to let them know that werenot going away, that we want some-thing done,” Ms. Roberts said. “Wehope that they hear us and our govern-ment starts pushing the Army Corps alittle harder.”

Ms. Roberts recommends residentsjoin her for the service, dressed inblack and toting signs expressing theirdissatisfaction. They will be handingout flyers with contact information forlocal politicians and representatives.

“We want to continue to get theword out there,” Ms. Roberts said. “Weneed to keep pressing forward.”

BusinessUrgent care center to celebrate success

TREASURE COAST — Next monthPhysicians Immediate Care is cele-brating one year of creating a betterexperience in health care at theirfifth and newest location in JensenBeach.

The urgent care network thatstarted with one location in Port St.Lucie in 2003 offers most of theservices that can be found at emer-gency rooms and primary careoffices, but with better service andwithout an appointment.

All of the locations spread outaround St. Lucie and now MartinCounty offer the same servicesincluding physicals, immuniza-tions, x-rays, blood work and EKG’s.They will treat a broken wrist orsprained ankle, offer occupationalmedicine and drug screening, evenultrasounds and routine exams.

“It’s one of the premier urgentcare centers on the Treasure Coast,”said Dr. Kenneth Palestrant, CEOand Medical Director of PhysiciansImmediate Care.

But according to Dr. Palestrant,it’s not just about what the centeroffers, but how they offer it. It’s

about the experience.“People don’t like going to the

doctor,” Dr. Palestrant said, citingcold waiting rooms and imper-sonal staff encounters as likelyreasons. “Our clinics are a littledifferent.”

Not only are the centersdesigned to be open and welcom-ing, but the staff is, too. They treatthe people who walk through thedoors more like valued customers

than patients. The centers also strive for time-

liness. Dr. Palestrant knowspatients dislike having to make anappointment days in advance at adoctor’s office only to arrive andhave to wait anyway. PhysiciansImmediate Care offers the con-venience of walk-in care at moreflexible hours than most primarycare offices and at much less costthan emergency room services.

“We try to offer not only thequality but the convenience also,”Dr. Palestrant said. “When you’relooking for quality, convenience, and a better experience in health-care, choose Physicians Immedi-ate Care.”

The newest center is located at1801 N.E. Jensen Beach Blvd. inJensen Beach and can be reachedat (772) 334-1700. To the rant regarding snow-birds

I would like to comment on thesmall minded person who wrote thearticle on snowbirds. I want you toknow that I pay Florida taxes for 12months a year, I pay for electric 12months a year, I pay for my water andsewer for 12 months a year, I also payfor your roads and keep you employedand all we get is your ranting. In NewYork we appreciate and welcome outof state visitors and we don’t call themsnowbirds. I guess your southern hos-pitality is only a myth. P.S. maybe youshould learn to dial the phonebecause you don’t seem to be verysmart.

More on the snowbird articleI am writing in response to an April

25 rant. I could go on about the economic

impact of the Snowbirds that youbegrudgingly acknowledge and per-haps the long lines are an issue butlet's just clarify that when you say it'syour town, you are wrong because I asa Snowbird pay more than my share oftaxes not withstanding I also don't

have a Homestead exemption! So it'smy town too and therefore I will losemy "abrasive attitude" and say good-bye until next season as I head northto our summer home and leave theoppressive summer heat and humidi-ty that can make some people lessneighborly. P.S. Just installed newheavier rear shocks and springs tokeep the "rear bumper from draggingon the road".

Just what I was thinkingI just want to say thank you to the

person who wrote “A disgrace?”. Theysaid what I was thinking. I just want toadd, thanks to Obamacare I am nowpaying more for health insurance witha larger deductible amount. Thosewho want socialized governmentshould consider moving to anothercountry – what is happening to Ameri-ca!

Beaches should have signsBeach access points could all have

signs stating, "Lifeguards not on duty, swim at your own risk," and scheduleswhere there are lifeguards.

Also, include information, phonenumber, the web address or a nearbybusiness to inquire where there arelifeguards on duty.

Some businesses might want to belisted and could offset the cost of thesighs.

Lifeguards are nice to have, but thecost is a big factor, and there is not away to pay for them short of chargingadmission again, which is not effec-tive.

Making beachside residents andbusiness pay for the lifeguards is notfair to them, especially residents(businesses would only pass the coston to the residents). Just because theylive there doesn't mean they swim in

the ocean. Beach access signs could also warn

of danger of swimming at times of daywhen sharks feed.

Driving laws are ridiculousI can’t believe what is going on with

the driving laws in Florida. The state isgiving out awards to cops who arepulling over drunk drivers, whenspeeders and reckless drivers are justas dangerous. When are the laws aregoing to be done correctly?

Pleased about the train article

I was most pleased to see the articleheadlining the April 25 edition of“Hometown News”… I hope everyonethat cares about preserving our sanitygets behind the initiative to kill thishorrid proposal.

In signing the petition at www.flori-danotallaboard.com I added the fol-lowing comment below. I had, onnumerous occasions contacted FECand tried to reason with them abouttheir abuses only to have matters

escalate and of course get the usualself-serving big business brush-off. Ihave even sent them sound recordingsand sound meter readings, all to nosolution only to have matters get evenfar worse.

“FEC is practically in my back yardand has ever increasingly become anightmare with high and sustainednoise far above OSHA guidelines permy own sound readings. Also theirstinking diesel pollution often hangsputrid in the air. The seismic vibra-tions at all hours of the day and night, not to mention their horns, arehideous! Those seismic vibrations, especially when they use their sidingto accommodate multiple trains pass-ing go right into my stomach andinjured back for which I am a totallyand permanently disabled veteran inconstant chronic pain. Those sidingssound like the trains are going overhundreds of hollow logs and rockscrunch and spit out from the track-bed. I seldom ever get any decentnights rest and can't even sell myhouse thanks to FEC abuses! They areruining downtowns along our beauti-ful east coast with their congestion

Earl Stewart is the owner and generalmanager of Earl Stewart Toyota in NorthPalm Beach. The dealership is located at1215 N. Federal Highway in Lake Park.Visit www.earlstewarttoyota.com, call(561) 358-1474, fax (561) 658-0746 oremail [email protected].

OK, you've just bought that new orused car and the pressure isoff…right? WRONG! The next step

for the car dealer is to get you into the“box.” You won’t hear this word men-tioned. It’s inside car dealer slang for thefinance and insurance office or thebusiness office. This is the place that yousign all of those papers making the salelegal and final. But in addition to that, it’salso a very important profit center for cardealers. In many car dealerships it’s themost profitable department. It’s notuncommon for car dealers to make anadditional $1,000 profit or more in “thebox” on each car they sell.

Here’s how that profit is generated.First and usually foremost is makingmoney on the interest they charge you.Essentially, they make money on “thespread” just like banks make moneywhen they loan it. For example, a cardealer will borrow money from Bank ofAmerica for 2.9 percent and loan it to youfor 5.9 percent, or whatever interest ratethey can convince you to accept. Thesecond way they earn that big profit in“the box” is by selling you “products”which are added to the price of the caryou just bought. There are manyproducts and some of the most common

are extended service warranties, mainte-nance plans, road hazard insurance, GAPinsurance, window etch, and LoJack.

The way you should protect yourselfon the interest rate is to have alreadyshopped your own bank or credit unionand two other banks for the best interestrate you can qualify for. Never go into“the box” without knowing what the bestrate other banks or credit unions willallow you. The best way to protectyourself against the products they will tryto sell you is to completely understandeach product. Do you want or need anextended warranty on your new car? Ifthis product costs $1,900 for example, how long are you going to keep the carand how long are you likely to be drivingit when it’s out of the manufacturer’swarranty? Ask the same questions ofeach product they try to sell you. If youare unclear on the merits of a product,do not commit. You can always go homeand think about and seek advice fromfriends and advisors.

Another important tactic that Irecommend is to never go into “the box”alone. If it’s just you and the F&I manager[often called business manager], andthere is a dispute over what was said, it’sjust your word against his. Also, having a

friend or advisor present willusually be a deterrent to anyattempted deception.

These are some of the kindsof deception you should be onthe lookout for. Tying the sale ofa product like an extendedservice contract to the interestrate or eligibility to have thebank finance your car is illegal. But this practice happens alltoo often behind the closeddoors of the “the box.” The F&Imanager may tell you that thebank “requires” you to buy theextended warranty, GAP insuranceanother product in order to protect thebank’s collateral. This is simply a lie andit’s illegal for banks or car dealers to dothis. Another common form of decep-tion is to simply not disclose the prod-ucts or interest rate and have you signthe contract without reading it. There area large number of documents to besigned after you buy a car. Buyers areoften in a state of euphoria now that theyhave bought their dream car and are intoo much of a hurry to sign everythingand drive their new car home. The cardealer is required by law to give you asigned copy of the installment salescontract. Be sure you carefully read itand be sure have a copy. If you don’t get acopy, you may find that you signed adifferent contract than the one you read.

Extended service warranties, GAPinsurance, and other insurance productsare regulated in Florida unlike manyother states. This affords you somedegree of protection like being able to

cancel an insurance product as long asyou did not use it. You can do this in 60days for a 100 percent cancellation. Youdon’t get the cash back and your monthlypayment won’t go down however. Butthe amount is taken off the principalamount you are financing through thebank. You cancel insurance productsafter 60 days, but the cancellation is notpro rata and you pay a large penalty.

If you remember nothing else fromthis article please remember this onething. Don’t hurry the process of financ-ing your car and signing the papers. Donot let the car dealer encourage you tosign anything you don’t understand.Time is on your side because it will allowyou to think and to consult with otherswho can help you make your finaldecision. I get a lot of calls from victimsof “the box” and the one thing they allhave in common is that they let them-selves be rushed into signing thedocuments so that they could drive theirdream car home that same day.

How to prepare so you don’t get trapped in ‘the box’ ON CARS

Reporter faces challenge of mud, snakes and obstaclesTREASURE COAST —The sun was shining, sneakers

were doubled-knotted, racers were pumped, and mypractically luminescent coral running shoes were one ofthe many pairs toeing the line at the Treaure Coast’s firstCourage Challenge mud and obstacle race last week-end.

It wasn’t my first mud run; I’ve participated in a cou-ple Warrior Dash races in Texas and Florida, but bothrequired one to two hour drives before and after therace. This inaugural mud and obstacle run was just

down the road and I wasn’t going to miss out. This was, however, my first race longer than five kilo-

meters. See, despite the fact that my dad is an avid run-ner, I am not. He coaches track and cross-country at myold High School and runs marathons in under threehours, but I guess passion and ability for the sport arenot hereditary.

But I lace up my shoes and hit the pavement anywaybecause I know it’s good for me and I do love a chal-lenge, especially if it involves mud, sweat or feats ofstrength and agility. Hence the mud runs.

My husband Josh and I ran it together (and ran thedistance we did), as we have all of our previous obstaclecourses. We stuck together, encouraging one another aswe pulled ourselves over wooden barricades andclimbed to the top of a very slippery cargo net. Weencouraged our fellow runners, too, as we passed themor they us on the sometimes long stretches of trail thatconnected obstacles.

They started out easy with balance beams and lowhurdles then increased in difficulty. We were warned towatch out for snakes and alligators as we swam across acreek, used a rope to climb a barrier then slid down intomuck on the opposite side, and scaled a sheer wall thatrequired quite a drop from the top.

It was a challenging course that twisted and turnedthrough Halpatiokee Park and wasn’t for the faint ofheart. The course required stamina and a healthy lack offear to make it over some of the obstacles. Hence themoniker “Courage Challenge.”

But none-the-less, runners of all ages and athleticability participated and event co-organizer JenniferCamp said “It was really great to see all different types ofpeople out there coming together to do somethingempowering.”

That’s what it’s about, after all: pushing yourself to thelimit, feeling that sense of accomplishment, and pump-

ing your fists in the air in victory when you cross the fin-ish line. Oh, and the race medal and T-shirt proclaiming,“I have the courage.”

Close to 1,000 people participated in last weekend’sevent and Ms. Camp said she hopes to increase thatnumber at future events, including the second annualearly next year. And next year it will be even bigger andbetter with more mileage and tougher obstacles for theserious obstacle course racers out there.

For details and dates for upcoming events, visitwww.couragechallenge.com. If you joined me at the raceand haven’t taken a look at your finishing times or racephotos yet, check out www.splitsecondtiming.com for allthe details.

Ihope everybody had a Happy EarthDay! As we celebrate this greatplanet we live on and look for ways

that we can keep it a great place tolive. Several ways include limiting ourfertilizer use and recycling.

Almost all cities have a recyclingprogram in place. In fact, about 40percent of your trash (or more) doesnot have to wind up in the landfill. It isgood to know that almost everybodyrecycles. If you still don't, now is thetime to start so we can keep all thisplastic and paper out of the landfilland reuse it to produce more plasticand paper without having to destroymore trees.

Our city has a great program wherethey just gave us huge cans to put ourrecycles in. Everything goes togetherand it is so simple to manage.

Many cities are writing ordinancesto ban most fertilizing during thesummer months. The reason is to helpprevent run off from the fertilizerduring the rainy season. This run off isa known toxic agent for our manybeautiful rivers and canals. Do yourpart to help maintain our fragileecosystem.

With the things that have beenevolving with our earth, Earth Day isbecoming more and more of animportant event in our society. Earthday is a day we can look around andsee all the wonders that nature has

bestowed on us. It is also a great timeto think about how we can protect andbeautify our environment. This taskcan be as simple as planting a singletree to beautify our yard or possiblyplanting a colorful garden for all toenjoy on your property or even todonate your time to a local gardenclub to help beautify an area of yourcity or town. With the growing needsof our fragile environment, now morethen ever, 2014 will be an importantyear to do everything we can to bothbeautify and balance our environ-ment.

The idea of Earth Day was initiatedin 1962 as a way to get people aware ofwhat is going on in our environment. It all started with President Kennedyin 1963 when he took a five-dayconservation tour of our nation. Thefirst official Earth Day was on April 22,1970. Since then, Earth Day hasblossomed into a national celebrationwhere people initiate ideas that canhelp make our environment more eyeappealing and a better place to live.

With all the hype on how we are

depleting our cypress forests by theuse of cypress mulch, there are manyother natural alternatives we can usethat are both functional and also willsave our natural resources. One thingwe can use that we all have plenty of isnatural grass clippings. That’s right;grass clippings can make an excellentmulching material that you can useon almost all your plants and flowers. You do need to be sure, however, thatyour turf has not been recently treatedwith any herbicides. The herbicidesmay damage some of your tenderplants. Place the clippings aroundyour plants in layers. Make each ofyour layers thin and do not make ittoo thick, as the mulch will produce asmell. Apply the next thin layer afterthe initial layer has been allowed todry out. As the clippings decompose, they will produce a fertilizing effect onyour plants. The clippings tend to addnutrients back to the soil as theydecay and work their way into the dirt.

Another great natural mulchingmaterial is pine needles. This materialis not suitable for all plants, but isgreat for the majority of plants we usein this part of Florida. You can usepine clippings on any plants that areacid loving. This list can includeixoria, hibiscus, bottlebrush, azalea, gardenia, junipers, and banana treesalong with many other plants thatrequire a high acid content in the soil.

Not only do many of these naturalremedies save resources, they alsosave you money. Doing large areas ofyour yard with commercial productscan cost a fortune. With the moneyyou save on mulching materials, youwill be able to purchase lots morecolorful flowers!

Many of your favorite plants thatyou have in your yard can be easilypropagated into new plants withoutthe need to keep buying new plants.Roses are a great example of this. Inthe spring, you can choose cuttingsthat are healthy and green and theywill make good candidates for cut-tings. Using a sharp knife cut off thesoft tip of the cane and then cut it into4- to 5-inch pieces. Each piece shouldhave at least two nodes and someleaves. Strip off the bottom leaves toexpose a node, and then plant thecutting in moist soil and keep it inbright shade and high humidity. Youcan use containers covered withplastic bags, or set them in the groundin the shade and cover them withplastic jugs. Either method shouldwork fine. Take several cuttings to besure you have success with at leastseveral. You are now on your way topropagating your own rose garden!

Welcome back, summer! Time for fishing in the sunThe only way Dolphin fishing

could be better is if they can pre-packed. The weather has been

perfect; the seas very polite and fishare biting from 60-feet out. We hadfish reported from there out to 400-feet with lots of dolphin eating trolledballyhoo.

Whether you were north or southof the inlet it seems there were fisheverywhere. In the mix was were sails, kings and wahoo. The seas were onlytwo-feet, so every boat was invited, any time was a good time and thedolphin chewing all day. The cobiawere happy about that since it took theheat off them, but they were still there.

Crabs were the hot bait and they

were in 40-feet watching the boats goby. On the bottom it was lanes andmangroves and in the mix were somebig amberjacks with sardines beingpreferred. It has been a great week forthe offshore angler. It’s finally summerfishing and I’ll finally put fuel in theboat.

The surf has settled, temperaturesare warm and the snook are moving in.Floater diver type lures, Krystal

Minnow and the DOA bait buster topthe list, mid-morning is preferred.

Tarpon are starting to show. Therehave been some nice fish, 80- poundfish. Anglers will need lots of line andlive baits for these guys. Looking tobend a rod and take home dinner, there are plenty of big whiting andcroaker which are excellent table fare. They are eating pieces of shrimp, clamor fish bites have gotten a lot ofattention… do not forget the ice.

I did not see a lot of river anglersthis week, with the seas being sopolite, if floats it was off shore. Look-ing for an eight-or nine-pound trout?Go north to Round Island, there arelots of big trout to be caught. Live baitsare getting attention. Plenty of trout

from Bear Point south most are at thetop of the slot with a mix of reds forthe early anglers, big jacks so keep afirm grip on your equipment. Thereare plenty of snook, wait for sun downand pick a bridge, most fish will beover the slot, so no light equipmentand live baits are the answer. It mustbe summer, not one question aboutpompano nor did I hear of any buttarpon are on the move in manylocations.

Well time for me to get back towork, let’s hope this weather stays andthe dolphin bite stays with us.

Henry Caimatto is the owner of theSnook Nook Bait and Tackle shop inJensen Beach.

Gift ideas for the mom who loves golfTime is running short! Mother’s

Day is just around the corner. Most golfers are difficult to buy

presents for. Toss in that it’s thespecial female in your life and thingscan get quite confusing. If you anylast-minute ideas, here are a few tohelp you along.

Tin Cup (www.tin-cup.com) allowsgolfers to create personalized ballmarks by tracing a design cut into atin cup with a fine-point Sharpiemarker. There are more than 135designs, including flowers, butter-flies, a turtle, initials, college logosand more. They will even make acustom one for you.

Women love shoes, or so I am told. The latest technology comes fromNew Balance(www.newbalance.com). With aportion of the proceeds going to theSusan G. Komen Foundation, theKomen Minimus LX shoe supportsmore than just your golf swing

Engineered on New Balance'sMinimus platform, this shoe put youcloser to the ground for a morenatural fit and feel. It has a waterresistant leather upper and a light-weight REVlite midsole that cushionsyour feet.

How about some jewelry? Betteryet, how about a bracelet that mayhelp her feel better, more energized, and to play better? Fusion PowerBandz (www.fusionpowerbandz.com)

offers a line of negative ion chargedbracelets that will do just that.

Negative ions are nourishingmolecules that work as anti-oxidantsinside our bodies. Independent, placebo controlled, double blindclinical tests have proved the effec-tiveness of negative ion technologyon the human body. Test showed upto a 66 percent increase in perform-ance and as much as a 29 percentdecrease in pain in those tested andusing the actual negative ion chargedbracelets.

Another bracelet that may just saveyour life, comes from ENDEVR(www.endevr.com). The MYID line ofbracelets features the “Star of Life”logo that first responders are trainedto look for on bracelets and pen-dants. Inside the bracelet is a QRcode, phone number, ID, and Pin,that allow paramedics to quicklyaccess your medical history andinformation 24/7. They will immedi-ately know your blood type, allergies, etc., along with your insuranceinformation and emergency contacts. These may be found locally at Target

and Walgreens.With the temperatures climbing,

the mom in your life may wantsomething to keep her cool whileplaying. There are several productsavailable to do just that.

From Misty Mate (www.misty-mate.com) comes a line of mistersdesigned to keep you cool no matterhow hot it gets. Misty Mate makessmall misters that fit in your handand that you can carry with youwhenever you need cooling. Using apump system to provide pressure youthen simply squeeze the trigger torelease a fine cooling spray. Thisspray may cool the air as much as 30degrees.

There is even a larger version thatyou could put into the basket behindthe seat of your cart. This would allowyou to cool you and your partner inthe cart while playing. There are evena couple of fans that can be attachedto increase the cooling effect.

The apparel from Misty Mate isanother great cooling idea. I use theArctic Tie and the cooling cap. Justsoak them for a few minutes and theystay cool for hours.

Moms always need to protect theireyes and look great in the process. The latest line of sunglasses fromMaui Jim is called PureAir(www.mauijim.com). This new frametechnology combined with thecompany's ultra-light MauiPure lens

makes for sunglasses that feel line“pure air”.

The MauiPure lens is the world'sclearest non-glass lens and is notonly ultra-lightweight, but scratchand impact resistant. They arepacked with up to nine layers of lenstechnology that cuts 99.9 percent ofglare and eliminates 100 percent ofall ultraviolet rays to reduce eyestrain. Trust me, you won't evenknow you have them on. They arethat lightweight.

Everyone likes new things, includ-ing your clubs. With a variety offashionable patterns and plenty offeatures Datrek's (www.datrek.com)D-LITE Ladies Cart Bag may be theright new thing for clubs and mom.

Weighing in at just 4.5 pounds, theD-LITE features a 14-way paddedmesh top with full length dividers, sixpockets, a velour lined putter well, liftassist handles, an insulated coolerpocket and much more.

Another idea is to give mom around of golf at her favorite course.Better yet, treat her to a round at acourse she has never played. Golferslove to play new courses. You mayeven want to join her for a trulymemorable day.
