insider’s guideWWelcome to Daytona Beach!

From the expansive beaches to the east to the stunning parks and meandering rivers to the west, this is a destination that promises to wow you. Put any preconceived notions aside and expect the unexpected.

Dubbed, The World’s Most Famous Beach, the hard packed sand is where motorsport racing began and continued for a half century. Today you can follow the trailblazers and drive and park on the beach. If that’s not your cup of tea, there are sections where driving is prohibited. With 23 miles of sun drenched coastline, the choice is yours.

While you are on the beach, be sure to soak in all it has to offer – everything from sunbathing to volleyball to curling up with a good book under a floral umbrella while the surf plays its music in the background. Build a sandcastle while you build memories.

Our calendar is brimming with events and activities, so be sure to use our colorful, detailed maps to locate the attractions. In fact, carry a copy of SEE wherever you go

and you will always be up to date on happenings around town. Look for the symbol for insider’s tips on the latest experiences. On a budget? Check out the EXTRAS on pages 14-15 for side trips and entertaining things to do that are inexpensive or free.

The Daytona International Speedway is getting a overhaul. Coming

soon, visitors will find additional seating and a variety of unique

retail shops and restaurants. And stay tuned for a addition at the Museum of Arts and Sciences. The Cici and Hyatt Brown Museum of Art is a 26 thousand

square foot building that will include the Brown’s

collections of 19th century art and a pictorial history of old and

new Florida. While we’re waiting, it’s business as usual at both venues.

Enjoy this copy of SEE and thank you for choosing the Daytona Beach Area for your vacation!

ACTIVITIESgetting the most out of your vacation

WWhen you think of activities, I’m sure the first thing that comes to mind is the beach, the centerpiece of Daytona’s Tourism. While you are playing on the 26 miles of beach, be sure to check out the surfers. This area is one of the top ten places in the world for hanging ten. You will be in awe of their skill at mastering the waves and might consider the possibility of giving it a whirl yourself.

And when you look for ‘something else to do’, there is an array of options. Finding activities is never a problem whether you are in Daytona Beach or any of its neighboring communities like Ormond Beach, DeLand or New Smyrna Beach. There is a never ending litany of happenings that promises to get you out of your hotel room.

World class courses await golfers and angling enthusiasts

local

will be torn between inshore and offshore fishing. Art connoisseurs will be immersed in the number of galleries in the area. Parks are dotted all around the Daytona Beach area and many offer the opportunity to hike, kayak or canoe. If you are feeling more sedate, take a leisurely, informative boat ride along the river or bring along binoculars and do a little aquatic bird watching.

The site of one of America’s favorite pastimes is about to get even better. The Daytona International Speedway, home of NASCAR, is getting a complete facelift and additions. The iconic Speedway will spend $400 million upgrading and adding more seats, shops and restaurants over the next couple of years. While the refurbishing will be continuous, you’ll notice many of the changes right away. Look for a new ‘wow’ moment, every time you visit.

DININGa world of dining choices

IIf you enjoy sampling new and exotic fare one day and indulging in ‘comfort’ food the next, the Daytona Beach area promises to satisfy your every whim. From ethnic foods like Thai, Japanese, Mediterranean and Italian, to best loved foods like mouthwatering fresh seafood and juicy burgers. If you are an avowed foodie, it doesn’t get any better than this.

Whether you are in Daytona Beach, New Smyrna Beach or Ormond Beach, not only will you discover a variety of food, you will find an assortment of venues as well.

Welcome the day by watching the sunrise over the ocean while feasting on eggs benedict. End the day dining on scrumptious, fresh caught seafood prepared to your liking, all while witnessing a spectacular sunset. In between, take a coffee break at an outdoor

café, or steal a midday break in an informal, sit down diner. Casual

wear is appropriate for most establishments, but if there’s a special

occasion, more formal options exist as well.

And when you get the urge for a late night snack, head to

Caribbean Jack’s. Their Late Night Bites promises to

satisfy your every craving. Watch the traffic on the river while

you stay warm and cozy on the outdoor, heated deck. Sample the

Jalapeno Cheddar Bites or try the Spicy Pub Pickles. And you can’t

go wrong when you order the Pretzels with Homemade Wisconsin

Beer Cheese Sauce.

No matter when or where you dine, there’s always a location

and selection to satisfy your every desire.

SHOPPINGa shopper’s dream

IIf you think the words, shop till you drop, are useless

clichés, you haven’t been to Daytona Beach. From the odd to

the traditional; from the affordable to the staggering, you’ll find

something you want in the price range you desire.

Shopping is just another sport in the home of NASCAR and

there are any number of ways to master the exercise. Indulge in

colorful beachwear. Grab a pair of designer sunglasses or shop for

colorful costume jewelry, or one of a kind souvenirs that friends

and family won’t hide in a drawer.

Forgot the sunscreen? You can pick up sundries and anything

else you may have overlooked. Head to the mall for the largest

variety or visit the flea market for unparalleled buys on the usual

and the unusual.

Add a little history to your shopping in these shopping districts: Beach Street in Daytona Beach; Canal Street and Flagler Avenue in New Smyrna Beach or along Woodland Boulevard in DeLand. These historic areas have a past that’s worth exploring. And while you are admiring the architecture, look for a distinctive gift that you won’t find elsewhere. Homemade arts and crafts created by local artisans will deck your walls and shelves for years to come.
