ACTIVITIESgetting the most out of your vacation

T There are so many ways to have fun in Daytona Beach, it’s no wonder we’re the “world’s most famous beach.” For some, it’s 27 miles of the best surfing on the Eastern Seaboard and for others it’s a full menu of family attractions, sports and historic landmarks.

NEW A new exhibit at the Ponce de Leon Inlet Light-house tells the story of early aviators who delivered mail at night and in inclement weather by following the beacons atop Florida’s lighthouses. There’s more captivating history at the 17th century Dunlawton Sugar Mill and the ballpark where Jackie Robinson played in the first integrated Major League spring training game in 1946.

If you crave information on the heroes of stock car racing, drive over to the intensely interactive Daytona 500 Experi-ence. NEW Don’t miss the new “Champions at Daytona” exhibit. A replica of Dale Earnhardt’s No. 3 Goodwrench

Chevrolet and memorabilia from the most famous drivers are fascinating. After your tour, go to Go-Kart City and feel the thrill of leaning into the turns.

If fishing is your game, the Atlantic Ocean and the calm Intracoastal waters provide excellent fishing challenges. The finest deep sea fishing charters and freshwater trips are cus-tomized for both the novice and experienced angler.

Beyond the beach are the lush fairways of our world-class golf courses, one reason the area is rated one of the top golfing destinations in the world.

Not far inland you can skim over water in an awesome air boat, dive into a sparkling clear spring or dip your paddle in a river winding through a quiet preserve. And before you leave, try to fit in simple pleasures, visit the charming village of DeLand, go horseback riding, or rent a scooter and drive on the beach.

While driving in Daytona Beach, please watch for pedestrians and sunbathers. The speed limit is 10 mph. and is strictly enforced. Driving on the beach in Volusia County is a tradition that began in 1902 when auto races were first held here. Driving zones are marked by signs. Fees are charged for daily, weekly and resident car permits. There’s no charge for vehicles with handicapped stickers to drive or park on the beach. The beach is always free to pedestrians and bicyclists.

WATER SAFET Y TIPSRip Currents occur when the waves returning back out to sea nd a gap in the sandbar. Since that gap will be a path of least resistance for moving water, a channel of swily moving water is created.

Escaping a Rip CurrentIt is best not to try and ght your way out of it right away, as it may only exhaust you.  So, it is very important to remember not to panic, and initially allow the current to pull you out.

When you feel you can swim out of the current, start swimming parallel to the shore. As soon as you feel you are out of the pull of the current, then you can start to swim towards the shore.

Smart beachgoers are aware of the possibility of an undertow or rip currents and know what do if caught in one. Check out the warning ags posted along the beach before you swim:

welcome act iv i t ies shopping dining New Smyrna Beach

I It’s a well accepted fact that eating out can be the best part of your vacation. Our area’s eateries not only present re-laxing venues appealing to anyone escaping the ordinary, they serve original local fare with pride.

From the ever-popular grouper sandwich served in a basket to a sizzling steak, all your dining options are here. The RiverGrille on the Tomoka delivers a laid back atmo-sphere locals love. NEW They’ve added an Oyster Bar on their deck over looking the river. In the half shell, steamed or dressed up—as in Rockefeller—order them as you like ’em.

At the Inlet Harbor Restaurant & Marina, enjoy fabulous seafood with a waterfront view. NEW And check out the 1,000 pound marlin mounted on the wall while you’re watch-ing your favorite team in jumbo hi def on the Sports Bar Deck.

For a slam dunk delicious experience, check out the new NEW Vince Carter’s. The NBA super star’s restaurant of-

fers an elegant dining room and piano lounge, plus 21 plasma televisions in the Highlight Zone Sports Grill.

Florida’s slow cooked barbecue brings out the ever popular Southern down-home taste buds and can be sampled at several area restaurants. Our Spanish and Caribbean heritage of combining savory herbs, avocado, mango and peppers can be enjoyed at the NEW Lime Restaurant and Rum Bar on Seabreeze Boulevard.

Onboard a dinner cruise or a funky themed restaurant, you will find Florida specialties and exciting original dishes. Add waterfront views and you’ll agree—no matter what your budget—you’ve just eaten your way through another day in paradise.

There’s something about shopping that completes a vacation, whether you are picking up trinkets or treasures. In some ways making a purchase is a reflection of your visit, but it’s just plain fun too.

Our shopping venues offer fetching boutiques, souvenir stands, galleries and surfing gear, or drive to the malls for bargain hunting among the finest designer labels.

At the top of the list is clothing of all sorts. Purchasing a new outfit from a shop with a selection of fun, comfortable Florida fashions may be your perfect escape from the rat race. Once you’ve shopped for hot tropical sundresses, tote bags and sunglasses, you’ll walk out looking like a Florida native.

The latest in surfing wear and accessories is big news at Maui Nix Surf Shops. NEW The season’s report on fashion colors spotlight include jewel brights and new neutrals paired

with hot white. Trend setting guys like bold graphic prints while the gals are going for the new maxi length dresses and cutout designs.

Head for The Sand Box stores to browse through swimwear names you know and love plus the latest NEW in mix-and-match bikinis. Fitting any shape, any body, from size 3 to 60, and each member of the family is their specialty.

Off the beaten path you’ll find local hand-designed jewelry and artwork that ranges from baubles to showpieces. Look for paintings, photography, ceramics or sculptures that reflect the lifestyle around you.

Shopping in Daytona Beach area is the best way to bring home more than memories. Flip through this guide for shopping ideas. And if you find a special treasure to take home, many of our shops will ship it back home for you.

welcome act iv i t ies shopping dining New Smyrna Beach

NNew Smyrna Beach has been consistently voted one of the “Best Beaches” with 13 miles of wide white sand. Take advantage of that by swimming, hiking, or rent a bicycle and ride along the beach as you see beautiful sea birds and anglers nearby.

For the latest in Florida fashions, stop by NEWGone Bonkers on Flagler Avenue. You’ll leave feeling like a native and oh so comfortable. Artistic folks have made their home here and you’ll see their works in the many galleries and studios. Lively activities are planned regularly, so be sure to check out our calendar for things to do.

Many of our visitors come from around the world just to fish or bird watch along our shores. Feel the sand beneath your toes in one of the new NEW Tiki Party Huts at Chases on the Beach! This New Smyrna Beach landmark has also added an all-weather canopy for ocean-side dining, rain or shine.

You’ll find our hometown quality in the lifestyle of the area. A pleasant change-of-pace from your everyday duties. It’s time to relax and enjoy your favorite leisure activities. It’s time to unwind!
