SEE JESUS SEEING YOU Lectio Divina Guides by Bill Gaultiere Lectio Divina Process Hearing God’s voice with confidence takes practice. A great way to learn is through Lectio Divina, a method of Scripture meditation developed by Benedict in the sixth century. Three times we read the Bible passage and then pray or journal quietly for a few minutes to help us listen to the Spirit. Each reading is guided by a focus question listed below. In a group context follow the leader’s instructions to know when you can share your responses. Be sure to protect people’s confidentiality. Introduction to the Text Simon and Andrew were brothers and fisherman, as were James and John. The pair of brothers grew up together. They had recently been following John the Baptist and he pointed out Jesus to them as the Messiah. They listened to Jesus preach that anyone who turned from their sins and followed him could immediately begin living in the Kingdom of God. Then Jesus saw them fishing and called, “Come, follow me and I will send you out to fish for people.” They looked into his eyes and left everything to become his disciples. Mark 1 14 After John was put in prison, Jesus went into Galilee, proclaiming the good news of God. 15 “The time has come,” he said. “The kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news!” 16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen. 17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will send you out to fish for people.” 18 At once they left their nets and followed him. 19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets. 20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him (NIV). Prayer / Journaling / Soul Talk Prompts 1. What is one word or phrase the Holy Spirit impresses on you? In silence meditate on that. 2. What do you feel? What specific situation in your life today relates? Write down a prayer or pray quietly. 3. What is God’s personal invitation to you from the Scripture? You can write down what the Lord may be saying to you or a prayer of thanks. Or simply rest quietly in the Spirit’s presence. Lectio Divina Guides, p 31
