Chief Executive’s Message

Meet the Enablement Team

One of the highlights for LOROS since the last Newsletter has been the successful occupation of the Willow Wing,

the 11 single room extension to our Ward. The feedback has been excellent and there is a lovely article in this edition about the first patient to use one of these rooms. We have been very fortunate that a few months ago the Leicester Mercury agreed to support the Capital Appeal. This has not only helped to boost the funds to pay for the project but has generated a lot of positive publicity with many patients and family members recounting their experiences of outstanding support provided by our wonderful staff and volunteers.

I find when I am talking to people in the local community about LOROS that they often think of our charity mainly in terms of our marvellous

Inpatient Unit. They are often amazed at the range and scale of the care services which we provide in people’s homes and through our Outpatient Clinics at Groby Road and also the fact that we deliver an extensive programme of education for palliative care professionals. I hope that you will enjoy reading the article about one of these activities, namely our Lymphoedema service, which I believe is one of the most extensive and impressive of its type in the country.

The current economic climate continues to be very challenging but our staff and volunteers involved in generating income have risen to this with new ideas and even more energy and drive. We are opening 2 new shops, one of which is in

Market Place in Leicester, and we are planning to re-launch our already very successful Lottery in April. Marking 2010 as our 25th Anniversary Year also gives some added impetus to fundraising events arranged by us or by supporters across Leicestershire and Rutland.

We are very lucky that people occasionally leave us a gift in their Will. This has been particularly helpful over the last year in managing our overall financial position in these difficult times.

I believe that LOROS owes its success over the last 25+ years to the skill, dedication and compassion of the staff and volunteers, both past and present, as well as the countless numbers of supporters in the local community. I would like to thank you all very sincerely for your valuable commitment to LOROS and with your continued support we can look forward to the next 25 years being just as successful!

The Enablement Team at LOROS helps patients and carers prepare for life at home after leaving the Hospice. A number of different departments with their own areas of expertise work alongside each other to ensure that patients’ physical, psychological, practical and social issues are all considered. The aim is to enable patients to maximise their quality of life for as long as possible.

Clinical Lead Occupational Therapist, Rachel Atkinson, explained the role of the Enablement Team.

“We assess each patient individually and speak with them, their family and carers about which services they need. We work with patients on the ward helping them to adapt. We’ve got a therapy room where we can take them to try equipment they might need at home.

“Part of our role involves education, to professionals, carers and patients. We run groups

at Manor Croft (our Day Care facility), looking at things like fatigue and energy conservation. Our aim is for people to think differently about how patients can live at home and ensuring they have the best quality of life possible.”

Sally Jennings, the team’s Clinical Lead Physiotherapist, believes that improving each patient’s confidence is a crucial part of the work they do.

“I think it’s very important that people remain independent for as long as possible. Even if they’re very poorly, they still want to have some independence for their own dignity. It’s quite important to me that people don’t come in and curl up and stay in bed. If they can be mobile, we encourage them to get out of bed and live their life.

“If somebody’s been very poorly at home, they come in here, they’re sorted out medically and then we will help them to get back on their feet by boosting their confidence. If there’s something they

want to do that’s particularly important to them, then we will try to find a way to help them do it.”

The team’s Social Worker, Judy Murray, also helps the patients and carers with any social issues they may have.

“My role is looking at social situations from a practical perspective. It might be helping them with benefits and financial issues, care packages and assessments. It’s a mixture of both emotional and practical support for both patients and carers for when they leave the ward.”

There are also Discharge Liaison Nurses within the team, who lead on facilitating discharge. This involves assessing patients, liaising with relatives, carers, district nurses and organising packages of care through NHS Continuing Health Care Funding.

LOROS Volunteer, Evelyn Hawkes is presented with her 25 year service badge by LOROS Chairman of Trustees, Stephen Thomas, and Jenny Walsh, Sister in Charge, Manor Croft.

LOROS Counselling Service Manager, Rosemary Freer, receives her 25 year service badge from LOROS President, Jennifer, Lady Gretton.

The Lymphoedema ServiceHave you ever seen someone wearing a compression (elastic) sleeve or stocking and wondered why? It may be because they have a condition called Lymphoedema.

What is Lymphoedema?Lymphoedema is a chronic swelling which mainly affects legs or arms but can affect any part of the body. Why Does It Happen?Lymphoedema occurs when there is a fault in the lymphatic system, which results in lymph fluid not being able to drain away, causing swelling in the affected area. This may be because of a problem within the lymphatic system itself, which is known as primary lymphoedema. Or, it could be because the lymphatic system has been damaged, possibly through treatment for cancer, repeated infections, or surgery such as hip and knee replacements. In this instance it is known as secondary lymphoedema. What is the Lymphatic System? The lymphatic system is a one way drainage system that returns fluid to the circulation via a network of lymphatic vessels and lymph nodes. If it is not working properly, then the fluid doesn’t drain away as it should and the affected part of the body becomes overloaded, causing a build up of protein-rich fluid in the tissues, resulting in swelling called lymphoedema. What are the Symptoms?Swelling, heavy or full sensation, tightness and stretching of the skin, reduced movement of the joints, thickening and dryness of the skin, discomfort and pain, episodes of infection called cellulitis.

Matron’s Message

TreatmentLymphoedema is a chronic condition which means that it cannot be cured. However, there is treatment available which will help to reduce the swelling and discomfort. Generally there are four components of care recommended, including skin care, the wearing of compression hosiery, exercise and self lymphatic drainage. People with severe swelling may require additional treatments such as bandaging or treatment with a special compression pump. Weight ControlIt is essential that people with lymphoedema keep their weight within the normal range for their height as being overweight makes it harder to treat. Normally, the movement of the muscles helps lymph fluid to drain from the limb, however, in overweight people, this action is reduced due to the excess fat. The Lymphoedema Service at LOROS provides specialised care for all patients with lymphoedema regardless of its cause. Most patients will be seen in our Outpatient Clinics which are open from Monday to Friday between 8.a.m and 5p.m. Once a month, we have a joint clinic with a LOROS Consultant and we also see patients on the Inpatient Unit. In the team we have four Lymphoedema Nurse Specialists, two Health Care Assistants, an Administrator, a Secretary and two Volunteers. In the past year, the team have treated 254 new patients and 2,123 patients have had follow up appointments. Treatment is free of charge to all patients.

I guess that we are all looking forward to the Spring. No more snow to battle to work through and the gardens here at the Hospice, so lovingly created with bulbs and

plants, will be growing and flourishing, providing cheer and diversion to patients, families and our staff and volunteers. We have now been using the new extension, christened the “Willow Wing” by the Hospice staff, since October 2009. We have received such positive feedback from patients and their families. There is a real sense of pride in what has been built. Thanks must go to all those who had the initial vision, to those who have created this wonderful space and to those who have contributed financially.

As usual all our teams, whether in the Care Services and Education or in the Fundraising Team, Lottery, and Shops, have been really busy. The essence of what LOROS achieves has been so eloquently portrayed in the recent Leicester Mercury articles. Through these stories I hope that many more people have a better understanding of the work that is achieved through LOROS. The generosity of all the families, staff and volunteers who have been able to share their experiences, have really contributed to this understanding and to the continuing work of LOROS. Thank you to all who have in any way contributed to this.

Finally, as many of you will be aware this is our 25th Anniversary Year. I do hope that you will be able to join us in some of the special events we are holding this year. We have a real responsibility to work hard to sustain this organisation and continue the dedicated work of the inspirational people who first developed the notion of hospice care for the people of Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland. Looking at the tremendous support over the last year, I am convinced that this will be achieved.Best wishes to you all.

The main reception desk at LOROS is always staffed by at least two Volunteers and is usually manned (or womanned!) by Volunteers from 8.30am until 9pm, when our security man takes over. We work a series of shifts and the shift which I am involved with is 12.30pm-4pm. When I arrive I am updated about various happenings by colleagues from the morning shift.

We are the first people seen by any visitor to the Hospice, so we welcome them with a friendly smile and ask how we can help. When any ward visitors arrive and they don’t know where to go, we walk them around to the ward and take them to the room of the person they have come to see. If a patient wants a newspaper we organise that and take the paper to their bedside when it arrives.

We direct clinic patients to the appropriate waiting area and inform the clinic of their arrival. If they are early for their appointment we offer to make them a drink. We get to know the regular clinic patients quite well and chat to them whilst they are waiting, some of whom are brought into the Hospice by one of our Volunteer Drivers. There is often a lot of banter going on with the Drivers, which helps to lighten the mood.

Receptionists also deal with any visitors to the offices, issuing visitor badges for security and we phone the person with whom they have an appointment. The Frizelle Suites are used a lot during the week for meetings organised by Education and other departments and it is our job to ensure that the right people get to the right meetings.

In short, we do whatever we can to help and I am sure I speak for all our Volunteers when I say that we all gain so much worthwhile satisfaction from the job and have made many good friends along the way.

A PATHWAY TO SUCCESSThe Leicestershire and Rutland Motor Neurone Disease Pathway Project has won acclaim from leading medical research charity, the Bupa Foundation, for improving care for sufferers of Motor Neurone Disease (MND) in the region.

Registered Nurse and MND Project Worker, Benny Rossi and the multi-agency team from Leicestershire and Rutland have developed a multi-disciplinary approach to MND care, working closely with patients to involve them in developing the service.

This work has brought together staff from the local acute hospitals, the community health and social care services, the local branch of the Motor Neurone Disease

Association and LOROS. They were awarded the Bupa Foundation 2009 Clinical Excellence Award in recognition of their innovative, patient-centred and collaborative approach to MND care.

Benny Rossi explained: “Motor Neurone Disease is a life-limiting illness that usually starts between the ages of 50 and 70 and can progress rapidly leaving patients wholly dependent until their death, which can be just 6 to 18 months after diagnosis. Helping people with MND requires a great deal of co-ordinated care, which is why we have built on existing services and improved collaboration between all those involved.”

As well as winning the prestigious award,

Benny Rossi and her team at LOROS have also received £15,000 from the Foundation to support their continued work in this area. Benny received the Bupa Foundation Award on behalf of the MND Team at a ceremony at Lincoln’s Inn in London on November 19th 2009.

VOLUNTEERTEAM LAUNCHEDA new Ward Volunteer Team has been launched to assist in ensuring that the nutritional needs of patients are met and they are served the drinks they require.

One patient recently expressed to a Ward Volunteer one day that he would dearly love to eat a fish and chip meal just as he used to do, straight from the newspaper. The Volunteer then arranged this herself and the pair shared a fish and chip supper (complete with the newspaper) sitting by the side of the seaside reminiscence display in the Hospice Social Area, with the music from ‘Seaside Special’ playing in the background.

This is an excellent example of how this new team of Volunteers are helping to improve the quality of life of our patients.

A LOROS Volunteer Fundraiser is one of thirty Arriva employees across the UK to receive an award for her efforts.

Kerry Whiteside, from Loughborough is now Head of Customer Service for Arriva’s UK Bus division based in Luton. Kerry won a Silver Arriva Community Action Award, including a £500 donation to LOROS, after being selected for her work to support the Hospice.

A charity close to her heart after her mother died of breast cancer, the 33-year-old has been fundraising for LOROS for more than ten years and sets herself a personal target of raising £1,000 each year.

Kerry said: “Even though I’ve worked as a voluntary fundraiser for LOROS for years, I never fully appreciated the value of the support they provide both to the patient and the surrounding family, until I benefited from this personally last year.”

Doreen Phillips has been a patient at LOROS for more than two years and has seen the dream of an extension for more single rooms become a reality.

The 75-year-old, who suffers from a lung disease called bronchiectasis, stays at the Hospice for a week of respite care every two months and was the first patient to move in to one of the new rooms when the extension opened at the beginning of October.

“I love coming here,” said Doreen. “It’s like coming to another home.”

The rooms are larger, with bigger bathrooms and flat screen TVs.

Wave-activated sensors flush the toilets, reducing the risk of infection and underfloor heating ensures the rooms are always cosy. Some are fitted with ceiling hoists, rather than portable ones, to help move patients

Nora Meadows, 88, had completely forgotten about a copy of her brother-in-law’s memoirs that had lain in her spare room for over twenty years.

Now you can read the fascinating stories of Viv Crosby, born in Leicester in 1905 and help raise £1,000 for LOROS.

Viv’s brother was the honorary physician to the Queen, hence the title of the book, ‘My brother was the Queen’s doctor but I never amounted to much’.

with walking difficulties. Many overlook a new courtyard, while others have a view of gardens.

Doreen, of Wigston Magna, compares it to staying in a hotel.

“Everyone always remembers me and people go out of their way to say hello. You never feel scared being here on your own. If I’m still here in the summer, I shall be out there sunbathing.”

Doreen sees the stays as a break for her and husband, Ernest, who looks after her at home.

“Doctors gave me up to two years and that was three years ago. They suggested I come here for respite care. I just have a rest, really. Ernest does all the cooking and washing. Coming here gives him a break, although he comes to see me every day.”

ARRIVA AWARD FOR KERRY

A QUIZ TO CELEBRATE 25 YEARS OF HOSPICE CARELOROS Volunteer and ‘Quiz Queen’, Jenny Burton, has devised another quiz to test your brain cells. The Summer Quiz, which will be in the LOROS shops and other outlets by Easter, will have a theme related to the Hospice’s 25th Anniversary and the Silver Screen. At only £1 the Quiz is excellent value and the winner will receive £50. There will be further runner-up prizes.

Viv tried many different jobs including working in a hosiery factory, tobacconist, café owner in Belvoir Street and pub landlord at Burton Overy.

The book has been edited by Nora’s daughter Joy Lambell and contains old photos of the time. Copies at £10 each are available in most LOROS shops and from Thurmaston Print Shop, 814 Melton Rd, Thurmaston. They make an easy to post gift for friends and family who have moved away from Leicester.

BY ROYAL APPOINTMENT

Last year Jenny Cox from Birstall and Bill Booker from Coalville attended the Queen’s Garden Party at Buckingham Palace, in recognition of the many years they have worked as Volunteers at LOROS.

On the day, Jenny and Bill met up outside the Palace before disappearing through those famous gates for the long awaited Garden Party.

Some three hours later, both reappeared looking tired but very relaxed and full of tales of who and what they had managed to see. Not only did they have the opportunity to take a good stroll around the magnificent gardens and lake, but they had seen several members of the Royal Family too.

Jenny and Bill thoroughly deserved their day out and both had a wonderful time. LOROS would like to thank them both for their dedication over many years.

On Wednesday December 16th 2009, 50 family, friends and colleagues gathered for a special service to formally welcome and licence Reverend Helen Newman as the Sessional LOROS Chaplain.

Archdeacon Richard gave the reflection based on the theme ‘Light in Darkness’ prior to presenting Helen with her Bishop’s Licence. Chief Executive, Simon Proffitt presented Helen to Archdeacon Richard as LOROS’ appointment.

Words of welcome were brought from LOROS MDT, UHL, Chaplaincy and the wider Church Fellowship.

Guests observed the evening as “happy, relaxed yet formal”, “a very special occasion” and “very meaningful and spiritually poignant.”

NEW CHAPLAIN’S LICENSING

As a LOROS Patron, Martin Johnson, England Rugby Manager, agreed to be the face of the LUNCH for LOROS event which took place on Friday 9th October 2009. People from schools, restaurants, businesses and groups got involved and had their Lunch in aid of LOROS.

Martin said: “LOROS is very close to my heart and those of others within the local community. I enjoyed meeting the winners and presenting them with their trophies for most money raised and most creative idea. I look forward to being the face of LUNCH for LOROS in 2010.”

LUNCH FOR LOROS 2009The trophy for Most Money Raised was

awarded to Katie and Lucy Padgett from Coalville for their Teddy Bears Picnic. The sisters raised £403. Most Creative Idea was awarded to Becky Cank and her family for her Jelly Lunch and raised £57.50.

A presentation with tea and cakes took place on Monday 11th January at Kilworth House from 3.30pm to 5.30pm. Trophies were presented by Martin and the winners were thrilled to meet their hero. Nancy Taylor, LOROS Fundraiser, said: “We are continuing this event as an annual campaign. In 2010 I have decided to open the event up to create a LUNCH for LOROS for the whole of July, giving more people the opportunity to take part and raise much needed funds for LOROS. Martin has agreed to face the campaign and we appreciate his help. For further information call me at the Fundraising Department on 0116 2318431 and register to take part.”

The 6 mile walk took participants through Bradgate Park whilst the 12 mile walkers continued through Swithland Wood and around Swithland Water, before returning to the Cropston Visitor Centre.

The event was supported by Severn Trent Water, Masterfoods and Fyffes bananas. Come and join us in 2010, on Sunday September 19th starting and finishing at Severn Trent Visitor Centre, Cropston.

Did you take a Walk on the Wildside?

The 30th LOROS Winter five mile walk took place on December 27th. Hundreds of walkers pulled on their boots and wellies to take part in the traditional Houghton-on-the-Hill to Keyham and return walk. Over the 30 year period almost £200,000 has been raised for LOROS and with last December’s walk expected to raise over £14,000, the £200,000 mark will certainly be broken.

The Walk is open to everyone, young and old and has become something of a tradition for many people in the area.

Trudy Noble, who took over the organiser role from Gill Brown, said: “It was a great turnout in the village for our 30th LOROS Winter Walk. Everyone has been helpful and the Volunteers worked so hard behind the scenes to make the walk a success.”

“I’m already planning for the next walk on Bank Holiday Monday December 27th, 2010. The walk is very popular with many families and individuals taking the opportunity to participate, working off excesses of Christmas, whilst raising money for a great cause.”

The walk could not take place without the support and hard work of the local community who help with administration, serving of refreshments and publicity. The success of the event relies on a number of sponsors and we would particularly like to thank the Dog and Gun Pub, Keyham Kennels, Kater 4 Cash and Carry Ltd, Walkers Crisps, Morrisons, Tescos, Houghton Post Office and Bosprint Ltd, for their invaluable contribution.

30 Years of Winter Walks

The team are all originally from Thurmaston and have known each other for 25 years. They all know people who have unfortunately needed the help of LOROS in their final weeks and therefore felt connected and proud to be able to raise as much as possible to help LOROS.

The team raised a staggering £4,000 for LOROS through shows, parties, auctions and sponsorship.

Nancy Taylor, LOROS Fundraiser, said: ”The guys put in 110% and I hope it inspires others to get involved in fundraising for LOROS.”

They’re off!

SING A SONG FOR 25 YEARS25 choirs will sing for LOROS’ 25th Anniversary, at Longslade Community College, Wanlip Lane, Birstall on Saturday June 26th with each choir performing for 25 minutes. There are two performance areas with start times staggered. Everything on the day will be related to the number 25, including the day, which is the 25th Saturday of 2010!

Choirs wishing to participate will be asked to pay 25p each to sing, with audience members to pay £2.50. Refreshments, including light meals (sandwiches and cakes), will be served throughout the afternoon and evening, and prices will be multiples of 25. There will be a raffle and tickets will cost, yes you’ve guessed it, just 25p! The first performance will start at 2.15 and the last will conclude at 9pm.

Nancy Taylor, LOROS Fundraiser, said: “This event shows how creative you can be with your 25th Anniversary event. If you would like to organise an event this year please call the Fundraising Team on 0116 2318431.”

For further details about the 25 Choirs event please contact Carolyn Necklen by e-mail [email protected] or by phone on 01509 814327.

In the summer we held our Open Gardens event which was very successful both financially and socially. So, it was decided that to maintain the wonderful community spirit it generated, we would invite the villagers to come and join in singing carols through the village on Wednesday December 16th 2009.

A flyer was sent out encouraging everyone to come along and bring with them family, friends, voices, torches, lanterns, hats, gloves and scarves.

The evening was cold and wet but a small band of folk gathered to brave the elements. People aged from 9 to 80+ sang with gusto and made their way through the village, stopping off halfway for mulled wine and mince pies, which sustained everyone for the final leg!

Our efforts raised £220 for LOROS and it also bought the spirit of Christmas to the village.

Swannington Village Carol Singing

To most people the name LOROS is synonymous with somewhere terminally-ill people go to die. We might have thought the same if we hadn’t already been attending an Outpatients Clinic regularly, held at the Hospice for sufferers of Motor Neurone Disease. LOROS was different to anywhere we had experienced before. Doctors and Nurses took time to talk to both the patient and carer, and gave much needed support, advice and understanding.

After spending nearly six weeks in hospital following a fall at home, we were surprised and not a little relieved to be told that Trevor was to be transferred to LOROS. Once there, we experienced the same care and attention that had been shown at the MND Clinic. Trevor had been very poorly whilst in the Infirmary and latterly the Glenfield Hospital, and had been left feeling rather fragile, vulnerable and concerned for the future.

The positive and helpful attitude of the Doctors and Nurses at LOROS looking after Trevor, helped to restore some of our confidence. The physiotherapists helped get Trevor back on his feet, and other staff members ensure he would have everything in place for his continuing care at home. It wasn’t just the delightful surroundings at LOROS that made Trevor’s stay so rewarding, but the unfaltering kindness, dedication and patience of the staff.

We owe a great debt of gratitude to LOROS as, I am sure, do a lot of other people who have been given respite care there.

Sadly, Trevor has died since writing this article, but his wife felt it was important to share how LOROS had been able to help them.

Dedicated And Patient Staff

Sister Jenny and her colleagues prepare for this time of year,

To bring joy to the patients and lots of cheer.

Christmas lunch will be served by our wonderful Volunteers,

With iced water on the table and one or two beers.

Food made ready by Cath and her friends for us to eat,

Beautiful meals followed by a scrumptious sweet.

It’s a merry time at Manor Croft

And time to remember good friends we have lost.

They will look down on us from their place in heaven

And saying thanks for the good times we were given.

Our thanks go out to Nurses, Cooks, Volunteers,

Drivers and Office Staff,

For making our day possible so we can have a laugh.

Celia and Jackie will be laying the table,

Filled with lots of crafts for anyone well enough and able.

The Nurses dress up for Christmas and are scantily clad,

Which is good for our old eyes as their figures ain’t bad.

But after all the joviality we must remember the Boss,

That little Lord Jesus who died on the cross.

He suffered for us that we could cope,

And for those who believe you will always have hope.

God bless all at Manor Croft –

In 2009, LOROS was thrilled to have Charles Hanson from BBC Bargain Hunt host an Antiques Road Show event at Kilworth House. Charles attended a number of LOROS shops to value the public’s antiques and also kindly put some items into his auctions for LOROS at no charge.

Valuations were by donation and the events were a huge success with many people bringing their antiques. The events raised over £700 with extra donations from the auctions.

In 2010, Charles will again be visiting some of the LOROS shops alongside fellow antiques expert and Bargain Hunt valuer, Kate Bliss. The visits are all in July between 10am and 3pm at Market Harborough on Monday 5th, Melton Mowbray on Tuesday 6th, Oadby on Wednesday 7th, Oakham on Thursday 8th and Ashby de la Zouch on Friday 9th.

Charles Hanson specialises in Jewellery and Silver, Ceramics and Glass, Collector’s Items, Books, Clocks, Militaria Items and Toys.

THE UK FROM TIP TO TOESteve Evans used plenty of peddle power and every ounce of his endurance to cycle from the bottom of England to the top of Scotland as he travelled from Lands End to John O’Groats.

Steve smashed his original target of £1,000, based on £1 per mile, raising an impressive £1,100 for LOROS and paid tribute to all the people who helped him.

“I would like to say a big thank you to everyone who supported me in this venture, especially my partner Abtar, who has become a biker’s widow for four months, as I stepped up the mileage in order to prepare for the 1,000 miles ahead of me. Thanks to the kind donations from work colleagues and family, I have raised £1,100.”

Steve also revealed how people supported him throughout the journey and how the achievement will stay with him for the rest of his life.

“On two occasions people who ran the Bed and Breakfasts that I stayed in made their fee a donation! It just proves that there are a lot of good people out there. Thankfully the soreness has gone but the memories are permanent!”

Steve’s partner Abtar, who works in Counselling at LOROS, is relieved to have him back!

Now Heather is going to be our very special LOROS Lunch After Dinner Speaker, in the Premiership Suite at the Tigers Ground, Welford Road on Wednesday September 29th. Arrival 12 noon for a 12.30pm Lunch. The event is open to everyone. Tickets cost £45 each or £420 for a table of 10.

You are invited to the 25th Anniversary LOROS Annual Ladies Luncheon on Wednesday 12th May 2010 at Leicester City Football Club’s Walkers Stadium. This year we are delighted to announce that Camilla Dallerup will be the guest speaker at the event.

Camilla is a British-based, Danish Ballroom Dancer, Dance Teacher, Model, and TV Presenter, probably best known for her appearances on the BBC’s celebrity dance competition, Strictly Come Dancing, since 2004. After reaching the semi finals with James Martin and Gethin Jones she finally won for the first time in 2008, partnering Holby City actor Tom Chambers.

Camilla was also a contestant on the ninth series of the British reality television series, I’m a Celebrity...Get Me Out of Here!

Tickets are now on sale at £35 per person. The maximum number of guests per table is ten. Stalls will sell stunning gifts and accessories from 10.30am with lunch from 12.15pm prompt. There will also be a raffle.

Walkers from across the county are invited to take part in the Coast to Coast Walk in aid of LOROS. The challenging 192 mile long Albert Wainwright route is completed over 13 days and crosses the country from St Bees in the Lake District, through to Robin Hood’s Bay, in Yorkshire.

In 2009 a team of nine walkers managed to raise over £19,000 for LOROS. A new team of ten people is required for the 2010 walk, which starts on Wednesday September 22nd and finishes on Wednesday October 6th.

LOROS Senior Fundraiser, Adrian Walker, who organises the training walks and has completed the Wainwright Walk on five occasions, said: “The Coast to Coast Walk is a great challenge. It gives participants the opportunity to get fit, learn about map and compass skills, first aid/survival, raise funds for a great local charity and achieve immense satisfaction in completing one of the best long distance walks available in the UK.”

Whilst all walkers take part at their own risk, they are strongly advised to take out insurance cover. LOROS will help get a team together, provide maps and advice on the route and assist with training, including survival first aid and map

LOROS Coast to Coast Walkreading. A minibus is provided as back-up and a volunteer to drive is being sought, provided at least ten walkers participate.

Accommodation is a combination of youth hostels and bed and breakfasts. The total cost will be approximately £600 per person. On average, walkers are travelling 15 miles a day with no rest days for 13 days.

As each person pays their own costs, there is no set amount that walkers are asked to pledge for participating. It is hoped, however, that £1,000 is raised for LOROS. Previous walks have generated an average of over £1,500 per person. Anyone who is interested in taking part should contact Adrian Walker on 0116 2318431 or e-mail [email protected].

JOIN SUE, YOU CANMAKE A DIFFERENCE

When the LOROS Shops Warehouse moved to Station Road, Glenfield, in the Spring of 2003, we launched an appeal for voluntary helpers to sort and process the many donations that supply our charity’s shops.

In December 2003, a Glenfield resident, Sue Jones, joined the team and has been giving her time and enthusiasm two mornings a week ever since. She quickly found out how interesting and personally satisfying her tasks each morning were. She felt a sense of being able to help others as well as making many new friends amongst the team. Sue was awarded the LOROS five year long service badge in 2008 with the sincere thanks from everyone at LOROS.

Our Charity’s Shops require additional help to staff new stores at 63 Market Place, Leicester and 31 Devonshire Square, Loughborough. A number of our existing stores urgently require extra voluntary team members, including our shops in Market Harborough, Melton Mowbray, Coalville, Wigston and 92 Narborough Road, Leicester.

There are chances to work behind the scenes or on the shop floor itself. If you would like to help LOROS by giving a morning or afternoon a week please phone 0116 2313666.

MARKET PLACE, LEICESTERFor a number of years, our Charity has wanted to open a Fundraising Store in Leicester City Centre. Now, thanks to the kindness and generosity of locally based national retailer Shoezone, we opened a wonderful new shop situated at 63 Market Place, Leicester, in January 2010.

We stock a full range of quality women’s, men’s and children’s clothing, interesting and useful household items, bric-a-brac, a wide ranging book department and gifts for every occasion.

TOP SHOP FOR CHILDREN IN LOUGHBOROUGHLOROS has opened an exciting new venture in Devonshire Square, Loughborough called ‘Top Kids’. A unique charity shop, stocking children’s clothing for every age, interesting and educational toys, books to learn from, read, or to enjoy as you get older and all types of equipment. This fun store opened at the end of January.

A BETTER BIRSTALLTwenty years ago, in the summer of 1990, our charity opened a fundraising store in Birstall. Straight away, LOROS had enthusiastic support from local people and our shop was quickly filled with stock donations and very importantly, a large number of local people became voluntary helpers, staffing what has become a busy, thriving shop.

In September 2009, the store underwent a major refit; its first in many years, which included the installation of a modern shop front and laminate floor. This created more shop floor space and a better environment for our voluntary helpers and customers, resulting in increased income to our charity.

Pictured are Leicester City FC players, Wayne Brown and Conrad Logan, officially opening the store in November 2009.

GREAT AT GLENFIELDLast summer saw the opening of our new shop and donation drop off point at Station Road, Glenfield, which offers a great selection of bric-a-brac, children’s, men’s and ladies clothes, books and greeting cards. The shop is open Monday to Friday and is staffed entirely by our volunteer team. If you want to pick up a bargain, please call in.

PUT US IN A SPIN!Please look in your attic! Our LOROS Media Store (255 Uppingham Road, Leicester) and Bookshop (85 Queens Road, Leicester) both have thriving Vinyl Record Departments which we are struggling to keep fully stocked. If you have any 1960’s/70’s/80’s vinyl LP’s that you are able to donate to LOROS, please take them into any LOROS shop.

Pearson’s Staff Show Peddle PowerIt’s November. England prepare to face up to the might of Brazil in Qatar. West Bromwich Albion, fresh from their 2-1 victory over Leicester City, shape up for a stereotypical footballers’ break in La Manga. Yet whilst Messrs Fryatt, Hobbs and Oakley remain in Autumnal Leicester, Nigel Pearson, along with 21 members of his backroom staff travel to Newcastle to begin a two-day coast-to-coast cycle, via Route 72, to Carlisle for LOROS. Soar Magazine, via taxi, train and on foot, caught up with our famous football club as they reached Carlisle and discussed what LOROS meant to them…

“It was 25 years ago that my involvement

with LOROS started and never in my wildest dreams did I believe that we would be able to do something like this.”

Club Ambassador and 1970s football icon, Alan Birchenall, is synonymous with charity work across Leicestershire.

“The event was totally different to the charity work that I’ve done in the past. Initiated by Nigel, all of the backroom staff have played their part.”

The team raised over £4,000 for LOROS, through their collective efforts. However, it would be impossible to put a value on the exposure gained, the importance of which was highlighted by Manager, Nigel Pearson.

“LOROS provides a wonderful support mechanism and we are delighted to have been able to do something for them and to raise awareness of their work.”

The launch for the event was held at Graham Goode Racing on Lutterworth

Road, who donated the use of their bicycles. Thanks must go to Grand Prix Scooters, Boston Road, Leicester, who donated the use of one of their vehicles for Club Chef, Gary Payne.

Joint Assistant Manager, Craig Shakespeare, was unequivocal in his praise of LOROS.

“We get on with our day-to-day jobs and sometimes, unknowingly, forget the value of organisations like LOROS. To give something back is very rewarding for us and hopefully LOROS will reap the benefits.”

The team togetherness is something that Academy Manager, Jon Rudkin was proud of.

“We have gained a great deal in terms of personal satisfaction. The atmosphere, throughout, was tremendous.”

CITY LINKUP A GREAT RESULTLeicester City’s linkup with LOROS has been a great boost to our charity’s profile, helping to raise exposure and awareness all over Leicestershire and Rutland.

LOROS is proud to be named as the official charity of the club and have our name on for The Foxes’ away shirt, which has appeared at grounds all over the country and live on Sky Sports.

As part of the ongoing relationship, the club donated the use of a matchday hospitality box, which has enabled families to enjoy a day out and experience the atmosphere of the Walkers Stadium. The box has also been used for auctions and prizes.

The linkup has also seen City legend Alan Birchenall MBE become a LOROS Patron in August last year. Alan has since visited patients at the Hospice and alongside the Manager Nigel Pearson and his staff, showed his support during the Newcastle to Carlisle Bike Ride.

Diane Morris, Fundraising Manager for LOROS, is delighted with the charity’s link up with Leicester City Football Club and really appreciates the involvement of the club’s staff.

“It’s fantastic really. In our wildest dreams we

couldn’t have expected the relationship and the partnership with the Football Club to have taken off in the way it has.

“It’s not just Nigel Pearson and Alan Birchenall that have helped out. The players have been to our shops too. Matt Oakley got behind our Lunch for LOROS appeal and we’ve had shop competitions with the winners going to the Bristol City game as guests of the Club and enjoying hospitality. So Leicester City have been very generous.

“Being involved with the Football Club, which is the heart of the City has helped raise our profile and the City as a whole has got more involved with the charity. One of the main things we wanted from the relationship was for people to be aware of the wonderful work we do and the vast range of services we provide.”

Fitness in Schools was set up in 2003 by Brian Hookway, who wanted to recognise and promote the vital services LOROS provides, by making a regular financial contribution. Brian has put his FA and SAQ qualifications and experience to good use by devising a fitness programme to personally deliver to schools and colleges, throughout the Midlands.

These events have been the ‘vehicle’, for enjoyment and have complemented the academic curriculum by improving the health, physical and mental fitness and general wellbeing of the young participants, whilst generating much needed funds for both their school/college and LOROS.

Any interested parties should contact Brian on 07878757503 to secure an event at their school or college. Brian would like to offer his sincere thanks to the Leicestershire and Rutland Schools for their continued support.

LONDON TO PARIS CYCLE RIDEIn September 2009, Pete Adcock, Frank Ward and Tony Findley cycled from London to Paris. They all had different reasons, but were united in their aim to raise money for LOROS.

Tony’s wife Fay and Pete’s partner Val helped out, organising a series of fundraising events including a Robbie Williams Tribute Night and Well-Being Fair.

Their respective employees, Everards Brewery, RBS and Caterpillar also helped with donations. At the start of 2009, the aim was to raise £3,750 for LOROS but they have collected three times that, with an amazing total of £12,604.

If you fancy taking part in the 2010 London to Paris Bike Ride there are many dates available, including 12th - 17th May, 26th - 30th May, 2nd - 6th June, 14th - 18th July 2010. There is a £99 deposit and £1,300 in minimum sponsorship to raise. Please give Nancy Taylor, Fundraiser, a call on 0116 23 18 431 to take part.

SNOOKER STAR SELBY PROUD TO BE PATRONSnooker star Mark Selby, also known as the Jester from Leicester, became a LOROS Patron in November last year.

Mark won his second Masters title in January after beating Ronnie O’Sullivan in a nail-biting final and follows in the footsteps of fellow city sports stars Martin Johnson, Alan Birchenall and Ali Mauchlen as a Patron to the charity.

Mark’s father, David, was diagnosed with lung cancer in September 1999 and died a month later, aged 63, spending the last few weeks of his life at LOROS.

Selby has previously spoken to the Leicester Mercury about his father’s care at LOROS.

“He was diagnosed in September and by October he passed away, so it was really quick. With me being so young as well, I didn’t really know what was going on and it was quite difficult to cope.”

Selby, 26, who grew up in New Parks, said the facilities at the Hospice were “fantastic” and staff did everything possible to make his father comfortable.

“It’s a great place. All the staff were so helpful. If you have a family member there then that’s obviously not a good thing but I have some happy memories of the time as well.

“When I used to go there it was obvious Dad was a lot more comfortable there than at home. It was just me and my Brother and we couldn’t be there all the time.”

Leicester City fan Mark said he was honoured to be chosen as a Patron for the charity, which cares for 2,500 patients and their families each year.

“It’s such a big thing, especially with me being so young, to be involved with something with the likes of Martin Johnson and Alan Birchenall. With it being a Leicester based charity as well, it’s great to be involved in. Whatever I can do to help LOROS, I will be more than happy to do.”

Another cyclist who took part in the London to Paris Ride was Joe Wykes who put his experience into words...Outside the hotel at 6.30am, ready for the briefing and to carry out final checks on their cycles, I was trying to recall all the advice I had been given and to not to start too fast, as I had a long way to go, 95 miles on the first day!

Apart from the hills, the views were brilliant. Cycling through France and the quiet little villages that seemed almost devoid of life, one could get the impression the country was closed for business.

Eventually, we arrived at a park off Charles de Gaulle Street, ready for the big procession up to the Arc de Triomphe, down the Champs Elysees and to the Eiffel Tower.

Around the Arc de Triomphe we were told to stick together as a group, to ignore the traffic lights and the traffic would stop for us. Amazingly, it did. We arrived under the Eiffel Tower in what was a terrific party atmosphere. The French Rugby Cup Final was on and the supporters were in their colours singing and chanting.
