President Moorehead’s Message For September

Field Trip in September is the Mingus Mountain Area(Daisy Mountain Rock Club will be joining us!)

By Galen Worthington

Hello fellow Rockhounders! Our Septemberfield trip will be to the Mingus Mountain areawest of Jerome to find some beautiful bandediron deposits (also known as Jasper & Hematite)as well as some possible agate and silicatesamples (see photo below).

See the map on the next page for directionsand instructions. We will rendezvous at 9:00a.m. I will bring some samples to the Sep-tember 21st club meeting and have a sign-upsheet available. This will be a coalition field tripwhere members of the Anthem, Arizona club willpartner with Sedona for the experience.

“Photosynthetic organisms were making oxygen, but it reacted with the iron dissolved in seawaterto form iron oxide minerals on the ocean floor, creating banded iron formations.

The dark layers in (banded iron) are mainlycomposed of magnetite (Fe3O4) while the redlayers are chalcedony, a form of silica (SiO2)that is colored red by tiny iron oxide particles.”

— from the American Museum of NaturalHistory – see article from the url listed.

https://www.amnh.org/exhibitions/permanent/planet-earth/how-has-the-earth-evolved/banded-iron-formation

We often identify the red layers as jasper.Below is a photo of a sample of banded iron(hematite-jasper) found in the area we will becollecting in.

Directions: Take 89-A,either from the Cottonwoodside or the Prescott Valleyside of the mountain andmeet in the SW parking lot(X marks the spot) at theintersection of 89-A andForest Road 104, near theMingus Summit Rest Areaand Picnic Site.

We will gather here at 9:00a.m. Collecting sites forBanded Iron samples arewithin a few miles of themeeting location. Thereare traces of Agate alongthe route but we may notstop for those. Bringwater, food-snacks, goodhiking footwear. Highclearance vehiclesrecommended

Last May’s Field Trip to Rodeo Flats

Over a dozen intrepid rockhounds braved avery warm day to explore the salt deposits inCamp Verde and then on to the Club’s claimsite where agates were a “target richenvironment” as described by one satisfiedhunter.

The salt deposits have been described in thegeologic literature as containing “ glauberitepsuedomorphs.” The original mineral (glauberite),over time was replaced by other minerals, mostlygypsum, but left the original shape of “large, well-formed, tabular- to wedge-shaped crystals” Seephoto below! The psuedomorph is on the left side. And check out the following blog page for moredetails of this geological locale.
