BOIPATONG. – A young unemployed manwas brutally killed by a truck loaded with scrapmetal when it drove over him in Boipatong lastweek. This was onWednesday afternoon at theBoipatong robot-intersection near the industrialarea. Apparently the young man’s death camedue a to scrap-stealing exercise that failed horri-bly. According to Police the deceased was stea-ling metal from the moving truck when he waskilled instantly. It is alleged that it is customaryfor a group of unemployed young people to ga-ther around the intersection near the industrialfirms and pass the time as the scrap-trucks passthrough. They then climb onto the speeding

trucks and offload the metals to sell for cash. This routine continues daily. Johannes Mpye-ne a 27-year-old unemployed young man waskilled by a truck on Wednesday while stealingsteel from a speeding truck.

Unfortunately for Mpyene the deadly mis-hap occurred as he was rushing to collect steelthat he had offloaded on the road. A truck co-ming from the industrial side just drove overhis tiny body and that was the end of him.

Police spokesperson Constable ThandekaKoago says Mpyene is the seventh person kil-led by scrap-trucks this year. “We have had nu-merousmeetingswith these youngmen andwehave shown them the danger and consequencesthey face by stealing steel from the trucks ...However, we have failed to get it through theirheads,” says Koago, who adds that a case ofculpable homicide has been opened.

Year in and year out we are bombardedwith speeches and activities during thismonth, but the more the fanfares areadded upon one another each year themore I believe that they are a waste oftime because those that they are meantfor, the youth, simply do not appreciatethem as it brings nothing positive totheir lives.

The organisation of these parties andgatherings during this month is simplya waste of time and money. The youthof today have failed to stand up and becounted like the youth of the 70’s andI believe this is with reason; they havesimply let themselves go.

I have written at length about thisissue each and every year and thereis no change.

Each and every year we find a highrate of pregnancy amongst them, anexcessive of drugs, an extreme lack ofeducation and last but not least, theirbroken downand amputated spirits.Doyou see any change at all?

Who is to blame? Is it the society atlarge or is it the youth themselves thathave decided to retire their ambitions, ideals and goals. I find that there is no-thing to celebrate what you call ‘Youthmonth.’

While the different leaders are busymaking their never-ending speeches Ifind that soon thereafter they have for-gotten about the youth, making promi-ses that they have never kept.

At this time of the year we hear howthe youth will be the focus of develop-ment, how theywill be empowered, yetnothing, and really nothing, happensafter this so-called ‘Youth month.’ Arethe youth at fault for having given up?

Are they at fault for not believing theempty promises that are made yearlyand lastly, are they at fault for feelingneglected? Is this a happy month forthem?

I don’t think so. I am sure we areall tired of hearing the same thing. Ouronly choice at this moment is leaveeverything in the hands of the powers-that-be and simply hope that with timetheywill realise that they are letting theyouth down.

I believe in the saying that says, ‘Anation that does not care for its youngis a lost nation’.
